Mazda 787B in Racing Games

- This video was on my backburner for far too long, so here it is. The Mazda 787B in racing games. A good sample of the video games you would find this car in are shown here.
The Mazda 787B is known to me as the powerhouse of a race car in Gran Turismo 3 and later being the rotary powered Group C car that's absolutely mad. It can rev really high, sounds great, and it was very reliable in endurance racing. Well, I know that because it won the 1991 24 hours of Lemans by simply outlasting its opponents on La Sarthe.
Notes:
- I apparently used Circuit de la Sarthe 4 times and well; that wasn't on purpose. I just really like driving on that track. That and it was the main track for one of the games it's featured in.
- A common misconception I've heard about this car was it being banned after the year of its LeMans win for being too fast, but that's not true. The FIA was altering its rules for the following year. Also while the 787B won LeMans in 1991, that was it's only win out of the whole championship. It lost the championship overall to other cars.
- With that said, it was still quite an impressive race car and very fast. It's just that other cars were faster.
- Personally, I still enjoy driving the 787B and it's one of my favorite Group C cars to drive. The others being the Sauber C9 Mercedes and Porsche 962.

787B is still my favourite GT weapon since GT5 (in GT4 it was lower tiered)
The thing is very strange, because in GT4 the LMPs are already overpowered: they have powers about 800~900HP when they always have been under 700HP in race setup.
It's not the only overpowered racecar in GT franchise. The most enigmatic example remains the Vertigo, that in reality has common Busso v6 or Maserati v8, but in the game has time attack powers. In reality there's no way that a racing Vertigo overtakes the 500HP!

What is interesting to note is that in Gran Turismo 5 the Mazda 787B has both a standard and a premium model.

Actually, it's just Gran Turismo 5. GT6 dumped the standard model.
but yeah, GT5 doesn't surprise me. There are a lot of premium cars in that game that have a standard model. That's due to GT5 having the ability to import your entire garage from Gran Turismo on the PSP. I think that's partially why PD brought the PS2 models to GT5 in the first place.
@@RandomCarGuy17 wow,now that makes sence. Always wondered about it. So as a "sorry" some models are still GT3/GT4 while some have been "Premiumized" with slightly more details (RS200,MX5 NA-s)
@@SapizanzaIt could've been done as a sorry in GT6, but I don't think that's why or the only reason. PD was going to make premium models of some of those standards eventually, like what they've been doing in GT Sport in 2018-2019.
Polyphony kept the standards in GT6 more or less probably because there would be an uproar from some people if they were gone. So, they probably decided to just try improving some of the standard models while giving them more features to make up for their shortcomings. They probably thought keeping the standard cars in GT6 would be the lesser of 2 evils.
Looking back, I personally think they should've just gotten rid of the standards myself. Then they could've put more focused into making more premium cars. The better looking standard cars like the Nissan R390 and Jaguar XJ220 could've possibly become premiums themselves had PD did that. Oh well though, can't dwell on the past that much.
@@RandomCarGuy17 100% agree. Now that you mention it,maybe PD could return Racing modifications but to it's own glory like the LM editions. I always remembered S2000 (GT3) always looked unreal and almost better than any real racing counterpart. Imagine doing XJ220 LM again or Zonda LM in HD! I'm drooling right now ^^"

The GRID series had what sounded like V8 and V10 versions of the 787B, but no rotaries.

Because they used PDs idea of using basic things for sound samples.

Forza Motorsport 4 and 6 both sounded great, respectfully. It sounds a lot cooler when the car is in a tunnel or in large areas where the sound echoes all around.
assetto corsa is fucking goated when it comes to the game's default engine sounds, listen to the fucking r34, its amazing.

Assetto Corsa is by far the best, they get all the finer details of the experience down to the point of near indistinguishable from real life cockpit recordings and such. If only all games could invest that much attention into their soundscapes.
And the physics are great.
Gran Turismo 3 is and was the best.

How did you get it in forza Motorsport 4?
It was part of the February DLC pack released back in 2012. I had it because I got the season pass with my copy of FM4 (I had the collector's edition).

You think Forza 4 is over? No. Because Mazda only leaves 787B in FM4, this thing would not appears in other racing games like GT6, FM6 and GT Sport.
A lot of Asphalt players want to see this beast make it to the games, mainly Asphalt 8 or 9 lol

Why was Forzas Charge livery green and red?
It's either an inaccuracy or I think there might have been an actual 787B Reknown Charger livery with those darker colors. Part of me likes to think it's the latter, because I swear I've seen that red/green livery somewhere else.

But not seen it on the actual car, so they might have used a scale model for the data.

It sounds like a more modern race car than the engine found in a real 787B. and where did you get the idea that the 787b doesn't have a 4 rotor engine from? Source?

Forza Motorsport 6's sounds are okay, I enjoyed the game as a whole, but I wouldn't say the sounds were top tier. Though they were better than FM7's, which Turn 10 for some reason forgot how to do car audio right. Forza Motorsport 4's sounds were better.
Asseto Corsa has the best sounding 787B!!!.......

We all know who the clear winner is here: rFactor 2. Stupidly accurate sounds, stupidly accurate physics, stupidly accurate model, and it's made by one drunk guy, there's just no competition. I'm so salty ISI and Studio 397 had to sell themselves to Motorsport Games to not go bankrupt from the lies and misinformation spread by Assetto Corsa fanboys. We will never get a game like that ever again.
