Yea, not everyone is always able to get a shot at a complete redemption arc. At least in his last moments, he was able to realize his failures as a father to his children.

It also seems to me that he held on to life for so long out of a need for control, and feeling incomplete. In this moment, he sees his son and knows that Shang-Chi will be a better custodian of life, and the rings, than he was. He is satisfied in the man his son has become, and so he is able to let go.

Man Wen Wu was one of my favourite villains. I felt somewhat sympathetic for him. He’s lived 1000 years and his wife was the only person that gave him hope that he could change. And when she was taken away from him he was distraught. Considering his whole conquering ideaology you understand how after his wife’s death he would change his goal and would try to get her back no matter the cost. He was definetly not a good father but it was kind of sad that u didn’t care about the father when he died

When that evil dragon attacked them both, and Wen Wu saved Shang Chi. I think she misunderstood the scene and thought that he tried attacking Shang Chi, not saving him. Maybe that's why

I love how Shang and Katie were just friends, it was honestly refreshing. Besides the true romance of the film, I thought, was between Shang's parents. That meet cute at the beginning was great!
Honestly one of my favorite MCU movies.
Edit: also Wenwue is the only villain in cinema history, besides Darth Vader, where I've teared up with their death. He's probably my favorite MCU villain.

And if they do end up as a couple down the line, at least we got to see they had a solid foundation for a relationship, that has us rooting for them.
Agreed, I think it's totally refreshing to see a completely platonic relationship between Shang-Chi and Katy, they're just so close with each other it's easy to think of them as a couple. I can't wait to see them again, bringing both the laughs and the action. And since Katy's become an expert archer, I hope she will get to meet Kate Bishop at some point, they would definitely do drinks and karaoke all the time! Essentially, I can expect Shang and his friend Katy to play an important role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
I really respect the Mandarin's character in this movie. Starting out as a power hungry tyrant, but found true happiness by being a father. And once he lost his love, he knows that there's nothing that can make him happy again. He just wants his family back. I understand that.
So he's Dracula from Castlevania.

The Mandarin is portrayed very realistic. Loves his family the most taking what ever measure needed to get that thing back. I respect that and I believe he truly loved his children in his own way.
Yeah, the Mandarin is a really hard character to adapt (Considering him being a racist caricature) that's why Iron Man 3 went such a different route. But this definitely was a great adaptation of the character.
To be fair, the dad really did and sincerely gave up that life (and the rings) to start a new life with his family. And he did grieved for his wife and truly loved her
If you've never seen _Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon_ you absolutely should watch it. It is one of the most beautiful Chinese martial arts films. It won four Oscars, four BAFTAs, and two Golden Globe awards, and is considered one of the most influential non-English language films.
Michelle Yeoh is also in that one, and she is spectacular.

Never thought Wenwu would be a really tragic villain of the MCU. Living a thousand years with the Ten Rings, he lost his wife and had a distant relationship with his children.
Amazing, how they cast one of the most prolific character actors in the world to play a literal walking punchline to a joke in Iron Man III - and somehow pulled the same stunt a second time here :D Ben Kingsley is just THAT good.

This was one of the best recoveries in movies. They took a hated character and redeemed him. I bet George Lucas wishes he could have done that with Jar Jar Binks.
ben kingsley liked doing fun films from time to time. he doesn't take his craft sacrilegiously and just likes to have fun with it. and the thing is no matter how cheesy the film is, he took his role to perfection. crazy.
In an interview, Director Destin Daniel Cretton said when he called Kingsley about the role, Kingsley pretended asking someone else in the room: "They want me to play Trevor Slattery again! Shall we do it?" It went on and on for several minutes. He sounds very funny in real life too.

Guang Bo, who teaches Katy to be an archer is played by Yuen Wah. Kung Fu Hustle fans remember him as the Landlord.
And if you look at the beginning in Shang-Chi's room, he actually has the movie poster for Kung Fu Hustle displayed on his wall. When a lot of people theaters saw this movie, they wondered why Kung Fu Hustle was displayed in the end credits. ;)
I noticed the movie poster while watching the movie. I enjoyed "Kung Fu Hustle," so I was amused.
In the comics, Shang Chi trained Spider-Man in martial arts when he lost his Spider sense!
And he learnt “spidey fu”

Wenwu may have shifted some of the blame around to try and deal with his wife’s death in his own way, but he actually says that it’s his fault, that if hadn’t allowed himself to be “weak” then she wouldn’t have been in any danger.
iron fist spent more than 2 seasons talking about fighting a dragon while shang-chi goes out and actually fights one. the call backs to iron man 3 and the inner turmoil of the real mandarin were nice unexpected bonuses.
Iron Fist would have fought one too if they'd had the budget of this movie.

@@Starsaber222 the pain trying to endure those "fight" scenes was real. I was fairly terrified when Simu Liu was cast because I know him from Kim's Convenience. I thought this might be Iron Fist redux. Luckily I saw a clip of him fighting because otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to go see it.
They made the choice that Katy and Shang-Chi are the truest of best friends and there is no plans to ever make them a couple

The film dropped a few hints at the end when they hugged after the final battle and Katy rested her head on his shoulder after they released the lanterns.
The most intriguing hint came from Simu Liu. He tweeted a few weeks ago when people were speculating about Shang Chi and Katy's relationship: "Or a person feels so deeply about the other that he's afraid of ruining their friendship by revealing how he feels." (paraphrase by memory) You can take the hint seriously...or not.

I love this movie and Wenwu is one of my favorite villains. He is a super powerful tyrant that went soft because he found love and when he lost it (because of his nasty past) he couldn't handle it and just went back to what he knew. He's such a good sympathetic antagonist I want more of him.

Michelle Yeoh was also in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The fluid motions reminded me of that earlier film.
Tony Leung did a great job as Wenwu. He's easily one of the best villain characters in the MCU. He has understandable motivations and an interesting character arc.

This movie is just irrepressible fun. It's warm and beautiful and every character is just charming beyond belief. Some truly outstanding visuals and the cast is one of my new favorite ensembles. Michelle Yeoh is amazing in everything.
Also, Sir Ben Kingsley is one of Britain's greatest living actors. If you've never seen it (I say that a lot) you should watch _Gandhi_ (1982). Kingsley plays the title role, his brilliant performance winning him the Best Actor Oscar.
As seen here he can do comedy as well. I recommend Without a Clue with Michael Caine. Holmes as you've never seen him.
What was really touching I think was that as much as Shaun can't stand his dad, he still loves him and when they first meet again, you can feel his adoration.
The guy on the bus recording the fighting is also the same one who tells Spider-Man to do a backflip also the guy who trains Katy with the bow and arrow also worked with the late great Bruce Lee

I can almost sympathize with Shang’s father when he’s telling him his mother wouldn’t want anything to do with him. You can see on his face these are things he probably tells himself regularly so for him to hear it out loud must be… difficult to hear.
The monster Wong was fighting is Abomination from the first Hulk film with Edward Norton.

I think Wong has to be my favourite character in the MCU, his cameos in this movie just pushed him over the top for me.
If you haven't yet, you need to watch the Marvel One Shot: All Hail the King, which shows Trevor when he's in jail and what happens to him in there. It definitely helps with knowing the backstory behind him before this movie.

The Mandarin is typically an Iron Man villain, so you can imagine how many people were upset at Iron Man 3.
Especially Anomaly, Inc. He *HATES* Iron Man 3 with such a burning passion, so I don't know if Shang-Chi will increase or decrease his hatred.
It's a shame too because man of technology vs man of magic would have been really interesting to see on screen.

U gotta understand the dad lived a thousand yrs wanting nothing more than just power until he met the woman who changed him and became the love of his life. She was taken away from him after a short period of time so u can just imagine the rage that was burning up inside him.
I understand that it's not technically considered canon, but you should give Agents of Shield a go. It's a brilliant show, and in my opinion, it makes Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron better experiences.

The 'creature' in the cage match with Wong is Abomination. He was the villain in the Incredible Hulk movie.

I've seen fan speculation that Katy's grandfather was the man Shang-Chi was sent to kill... if so, that friendship is bound to be tested in the sequel.
My favorite part was Shang Chi's fight in the bus and his fight with his father Wenwu AKA The Mandarin.
that moment when wenwu snaps back from hearing his wifes voice is really great. seeing the emotion switch in his face is amazing.
Wen wu is the most fatherly villain of all... He has the aura of a guy who have seen it all and was able to settle... I've seen him as the most chill and soft unlike most villain who are pure evil and nothing more

I love the fact that he used both his mom and dad's style in the end against the main baddy. The move he used was the one his dad used against him a few minutes earlier when he sent the rings into the ground to explode out.
You should watch Raya and the Last Dragon, it has Awkwafina as well. It came out before Shang-chi and I really liked it, so for me Shang-chi was the Marvel version of Raya and the Last Dragon. Both are really good. Raya also has a beautiful score by James Newton Howard, highly recommend.
Shangchi comics came out in 1973, which more Raya is the copied of shangchi

So, here’s a fun fact. The bus passenger is played by the same actor who made a cameo appearance in Spider-Man Homecoming. And the character Abomination was in The Incredible Hulk movie in 2008, but actor Eli Roth was uncredited for returning to the voice role of Abomination.

The father trains his son to be a killer in order to prevent being assassinated by the enemy. This is necessary. This love does not seem so warm, but it is still.
Simu Liu (Shaun) was in a hilarious sitcom called Kim's Convenience. He played a very different character. No martial arts. It's on Netflix.
I share your sentiments exactly about this movie, Mary! Shang-Chi is definitely one of my top 5 and top ten Marvel movies, the story of Shang-Chi and his complicated, broken family is beautiful but tragic, as well as the character development for Shang-Chi, his friend Katy, his sister Xialing, and even his father. The story couldn't be better, and I love how he is now part of the Avengers world now that Wong has taken an investment in him and his use of the Ten Rings, I certainly can't wait for the next movie he shows up in before he eventually meets up with more of the Avengers moving forward.

Tai Chi or known as Tai Chi Chuan was founded by Zhang San Feng in the 12th Century
Shaolin as we all know is the main source of all martial arts in all of Asia
Every Asian Martial Art came from Shaolin
Wing Chun was founded by a women and it has been widely known by Yip Man/Ip Man the Grandmaster of Wing Chun and who taught Legendary Bruce Lee

…98% of all MCU movies have them, so I always have a habit to watch to the end.
People have been saying phase 4 is off to a ropey start but Shang-Chi was amazing in my eyes. BW and Eternals while flawed had plenty of positives to take away as well.
And the shows have been great too
The vast, vast majority of people saying that are just upset that all those characters they've been watching for the past 13 years (that they had no idea about in the slightest before these films came out) aren't front and centre anymore.
My theory about Katy is when the archery master was about to die, he transferred his skill to her so they would still have a chance to win. That's not supported by anything in the film, but makes more sense to me than she became a skilled archer after one practice session.

Something that's heavily overlooked in the end credits is that banner is his normal self again. Last we saw him he was hulk's body fused with banners brain. Does that mean he either undid the changes, or can he now transform at will while keeping the brains? It's also interesting that his arm is still damaged.
The thing that made this even more brilliant that it already was is the fact that they brought back Trevor from Iron Man 3 with his new faceless friend

That karaoke mid-credit scene was my favorite scene because I am a sucker for karaoke and when Wong told them to go home and rest I knew where it was going.

I gotta admit that I had very little interest in this movie but after seeing it, I think it’s one of the best Marvel movies yet.
Wen Wu's grief consumed him. Took his humanity that his wife gave him. It made him vulnerable to the Dweller in Dark because he too was in the Darkness. It was only at the end that he realized what he gave up.

he has super-strength comparable to Hulk's and his design in this movie is very different than the Incredible Hulk design, probably to assimilate more with his comic book version.

You may be pleased/interested to learn that a great deal of the movie was made in Australia ! :)
That army fight scene the movie opened with for exemple was shot in Sydney's centennial park, all the VFX for that sequence as well as the Bus fight sequence were done in Melbourne, while the Ta Lo village shots were also shot in Sydney with the CGI environments made in Adelaide.
If you want to see more of Simu Liu you could check out the TV shows "Kim's Convenience", "The Expanse", and "Taken". He's also a good singer (he's sung the anthem a few times at Raptors 905 basketball games ).
