I worked through the 'all the arabic you wished you'd learned' workbook online (which is for fusha) and it had an interesting explanation for why the alif is shortened in DY and DW past tense verbs. Supposedly its grammatically incorrect (in fusha at least) to have two consecutive letters with a sukuun, and that since a long vowel technically has a sukuun on it, it is shortened to prevent double sukuuns. I'm not sure how completely correct it all is and obviously the sukuun rule doesn't apply in dialect but its an interesting way of understanding and being able to figure out when to shorten the alif.

WOW that's absolutely right that technically you can't have two sukun next to each other - i didn't realize that that was why it was shortened though !!

When I learned fusha, I remember having this maxim that went "التقاء الساكنين" shoved down my throat a few times

Teacher. Make a video teaching how to say this in PALESTINIAN:
    1. I play the keyboard.
    2. I play the bass guitar.
    3. I play the drums.
    4. I play the saxophone.
    6. I use the microphone.
    7. I play the flute.
    8. I play the violin.

That's a lovely idea! I have a few videos queued up already but I'm going to add that to my list of ideas to carry out in the near future!

What about the verb "غار" isn't it conjugated as "يغار" in present tense ?

yes it is - نام also. those are the only two that work that way off the top of my head so i didn't want to overcomplicate things. i'm going to redo these really important videos on the tenses & forms soon & i'll account for all of this in a way that makes more sense.
