I feel like this aspect of the show is a bit downplayed. I think I'd be terribly struck by the existence of death gods and the supernatural, the suggestion that the afterlife is real, and at least by the symbols, that maybe Christianity has some basis.
Your characterisation of Misa is pretty spot on, though it's also worth noting that there's a bit of a trope in Japanese media where younger women get obsessed over manipulative men, and it's clear that Misa is sorta falling into that role with Light. Though Misa herself is a super cool character who absolutely plays up the "I'm a small blonde girl" thing to get people to overlook how intelligent and cunning she actually is
Misa might just be the best execution of the trope, because there's a bunch of real life women that choose to ignore red flags and decide to be with serial killers on purpose out of idolatry. It's less about the dynamics of the manipulation and a lot more about knowing beforehand who the manipulative man really is. She's not going in unknowingly and she's also at least 2 years older than Light, so it's not even an age power play thing either.
I believe that the term (in the Japanese) that you are looking for is "yandere". A young woman who is initially sweet, caring, and affectionate but becomes obsessively and violently possessive towards someone they love. The word is a portmanteau of two Japanese words: "yanderu" (to be sick) and "deredere" (affectionate/lovey-dovey).
@@atlasisshrugging I think generally yandere characters are written with the implication that they'll ultimately kill the guy whom they're obsessed with. Misa seems more like she's willfully choosing to be manipulated by Light out of a sense of obligation rather than romantic obsession
Misa's character is like 2 sides of a coin: She is that traumatized young girl who craves love and is ready to do anything for Light, who avenged her parents. But at the same time, she is that person who is ready to kill her friend when needed, she's crazy obsessed with a guy she just met, and despite her being a witness to her parents murder, it's like she doesn't understand the value of life. For how emotional she is, she is also a very careless killer. She is top tier crazy and I honestly love it, because no matter how manipulative Light is, his logically rooted paranoid mind can never truly predict what Misa is up to, even if she seems determined to obey.
@supergobgoblin424 Well, sure she is no genius like Light, but she compensates for it by having Shinigamy eyes. Light never got rid of Misa, even when he could. That means she was more of use to him than a liability.
@@supergobgoblin424 Without Misa, there would be no Rem, who was willing to do what was done (not spoilering). Also, It was the way Misa acted, that took a lot of suspicion away from things that Light needed to be done. Sure, without Misa the outcome would have been different, but we can't really know who it would be better for.
I do love that this episode shows how bad Light is at emotional intelligence. Misa's obsession with him is 100% emotion and 0% logic so Light can't understand her at all. Leading to her outright saying she'll let him use her but he still feels like he has to be subtle about his manipulation or risk scaring her off
I find it incredibly funny that Ryuk is either the dumbest character in the series, or he's just so chronically bored that he stopped paying attention and forgot just about everything there is to know about being a Shinigami. The amount of knowledge he knew to pass to Light, or at least pretended to not know to not pass to Light and let him figure out on his own is astounding. And I'm tempted to say it is the first option, because even in his inner monologue he's all like "damn, I didn't even realize". Not that being the dumbest character in Death Note means much, because the dumbest character in this is still smarter than the average person in any other anime; but still Light had what? A fourth? Maybe a fifth of the actual rules at the start of the show and had to test and figure them out with time. From these two past episodes, you can see how Misa is incredibly tragic. She got her family killed in front of her; she was supposed to die at the hands of some pervert stalker when she was pretty young; and though she lucked out because a god cheated fate for her; she then goes on to fall in love with a different kind of psychopath, with the hopes of being a killer for him.
In manga, when Light and Misa meet, he has pretty much no reaction like in anime but there is a scene where they get too close while talking and they both realize their close proximity and Light immediately backs off looking confused and he thinks to himself that he should be careful, love is what causes downfall of 'weak people' Details like these in manga give Light's characters so much more depth. He is not completely without emotions but he has this image of himself in his head which he keeps reminding himself to live up to
i think L was only that shocked because his world is all about logic and they straight up just confirmed for him that the supernatural exists ... if looking for a guy who can hive people heart attacks wasn't supernatural enough 😅
0:30 I think it makes a lot of sense for L to freak out at the prospect of supernatural beings with supernatural powers being real. L's whole life revolves around figuring out the truth using logic and reasoning. He has strived to construct an accurate concept of reality in his mind. He knows what the rules of the world are, and he can use that knowledge and his intelligence to navigate it and solve his cases. If magic is real, then for all he knows anything is possible. There are no limits to what could happen. And if there are rules or limits that constrain the endless possibilities, he has no way of knowing what those limits are. So theorically anything could happen and L could do nothing about it, because he doesn't know which rules apply anymore. In other words, if god's of death are real his basic framework of reality woukd be destroyed. And it means he could do nothing, or very little, against his enemy. After all, how do you even fight a god of death? In the end I think he qould be able to accept it and move on if he got sufficient proof, but it does freak him out.

I bulk upload my videos to free up my schedule as I'm getting ready to start a full time job and don't always have time to edit the videos and thumbnails on the day they're being uploaded. All videos will be live for the public. I will never hide YT videos behind a paywall. Members get early access but 2 x 2 is scheduled to go live tonight :)
I really like your theories about how the plot will continue, Misa is an interesting and disconcerting character. I would like to tell you what happens next, but it is better for you to see it for yourself.
I think that so far, everything and everyone has been a toy to Light, so it seems likely that will continue. Light is a narcissist who believes he has a perfect vision for the world and suddenly he has the power to change things, so in his mind, whatever he has to do to ensure his vision is justified and the fact that he does no harm if he can avoid it is enough for him to view himself as innocent, even saintly.
_"and the fact that he does no harm if he can avoid it"_ Evidence of his self-delusion right there since he had little reason to kill Lind L. Taylor and Raye Penber. Arguably the embezzler and the purse snatcher were also avoidable since he only killed them to speed up the removal of the surveilllance in his house.
If I remember right, Light had written the circumstance of the truck hitting him however only a few variations of the name were used. The description is what seemed to fill more of the page.
The rules in the middle of the episodes start becoming incorrect over time. For example, the rule about the note being rendered useless if a name is misspelled 4 times has to be total bull, because on the very first episode, when Light was trying to kill the gang member, he tried a bunch of spellings for his name, definetly more than 4, and since only 1 of them could be correct then the rest were misspelled, yet the notebook was never rendered useless.
No, that rule is still correct. Light writing the name that many times and it still taking effect means the correct spelling was one of the first four attempts. Really puts into perspective just how close the entire plot came to being averted since Light would have assumed the Death Note was a prank and that the first death was a coincidence if he had failed.
Poor Misa, so down bad.. But she does know what she wants and how to go and get it, I guess. And she's pretty clever about it too! That said, the whole yandere stereotype always rubs me a bit wrong and seems a little male-gazey to me..
Misa is my favorite character, even though she's sadly living proof of how the author of Death Note is apparently incapable of creating female characters without them being obsessed with men. But she's very smart and interesting anyway if you ignore the misogyny lol I hope you like her too
Such a pure heart she has. EDIT: Referring to Misa "I'm sure Kira is kind to those with pure hearts." while she's offing innocent TV hosts and cops entering a building she's not even in.
This is literally her introduction. Where all we’ve seen of her so far is a smart yet naive girl with a death note that’s been repeatedly hurt and traumatized. At this point in the story, it’s definitely poor Misa.
I’m a simple man. I see a new reaction from Sophie, I click.
You big cutie 😭❤️

I meant L was shaken by the Shinegami not Ryuk 😂 Though the prospect of Ryuk being scared of other Shinegami is quite hilarious!

I mean, NGL that shit would be outright terrifying lmao

13:18 Perfect girlfriend 🤣
16:16 She's a smexy model - she has her share of suitors who love her (ya don't give her enough credit) 🤭
16:08 that's not the same Light we see in ep1. What a great anime
FYI, it says ep 1x12 on the thumbnail instead of 1x13

He must have gotten it right within the first four attempts.
