Thanks for this! I had the key stuck problem for years before I recently ordered the replacement microswitch assembly and installed it. Your video was helpful! One thing though, you skipped the removal of the shifter faceplate (at 7:24) and I was on my own as to how to remove it. In my attempt to remove it, I ended up breaking off one of the bezel holding tabs on the shifter faceplate (I did glue it back together and fortified it with Krazy Glue + baking soda so it wouldn't break off again).
This was awesome. You saved me over $150. Was about to let the repair shop replace the ignition switch. I was able to tweak the micro-switch without actually removing it. When you press the shift lock, the bracket moves off the switch enough to gently tweak it with needle nose pliers. The best part is that it was free! Wife made me clean the console while it was out. Amazing how much crap gets in there. Thanks.
John, very good! want you to know I'll be making a new video on the replacement of that switch ( as soon as weather permits, this summer). This time I hope image to be clearly crisp and sharp to Watch.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have a 2008 Saturn Vue and it doesn't have a small compartment under the steering column to remove. But I was able to pull down the lever that adjusts the height of the steering wheel and stick my finger in just far enough to feel the small button to release my keys. But for this video I would have never known it was there...the owner manual sucks!! This is the second time my battery has died and the keys were stuck...the last time I hadn't discovered this video and had to leave my keys in the ignition for hours until I could get a jump, but by that time the keys caused my battery to drain completely and I had to purchase a new battery. You saved me time and money, THANK YOU!!!
Andi, I dont know about the VUE, finding out as I read your comment. I will probably look into the cause if similar to Ion ( that is if the PARK sensor microswitch failing or mechanism not fully actuating it )
This worked for me! Though it was hard to figure out what to press or to push. Eventually I got it and the key popped out. Remember to turn the key while you're doing this, cause I didn't at first.
Thanks so much for posting this video! I don't have the time right now to do the more permanent fix, but just knowing that I can hit the white plastic plunger under the steering column to release the key is awesome. Thanks again for providing this information!
Well, I would not have known about the recall either except we told the auto parts lady that ours broke and most in the junk yard were also broken so she suggested we check for a recall.
Can you give me more details about the recall you mention here. I am having this problem with key locking up and having to press the release button so if there is a recall I would like to know about it. Many thanks
Tara, I hope this video helped your husband (turning key to off and out to prevent battery draining). Eventually this summer I will make a part 2 video replacement of that faulty switch. Subscribe so when next video is uploaded you wont miss it ( FREE ! ).
To: Volatile Thoughtz, Yes, you can also try pressing the shifter handle trigger numerous times when it is in park position, ther is a good chance it is the microswitch inside the assembly.
Hi Dan, can you please tell me where you ordered the replacement microswitch? I saw the video where you clearly showed the replacement part (looked like it was made in Germany) but I have not found it in my online web searching. Thanks much
Thank you for making the video. We have a 2005 Ion with the same problem. When the key gets stuck, the battery dies. Is there a safe way to jump start the car without killing the car's on-board computer? We have had that happen twice, very, very expensive. Help.
+KaiEliLove You're welcome ! If you had an issue with the key not returning to off , I want you to know there is a GM recall to fix this at no charge to the owner.
Rapls, you should watch all others video I made on that subject , You need to replace the microswitch, it only cost $2 + pennies, best thing to do, click to subscribe to my channel it's FREE! Dan
I could follow this up to 7:28 but then it gets too hard to see and that is the most important part. I am having this issue but (not being a mechanic) am not sure I could pull this off since I am not sure what is going in there at the end...
I've got a 2005 Saturn Ion and have been having a stuck key problem for years. Sometimes the key comes out right away...sometimes it takes 10-20 seconds to finally click and come out. Once a week it takes over 5 minutes to finally get it out of the ignition. This seems to be a very common problem with Saturns.
Good ! Now GM Has finally made a Recall on this particular major problem. You did the right thing, remember I did this video long before the recall, matter of fact , GM probably learned how to fix it by viewing my video.
Danroxye01 Excellent video. I have a 2007 ION 3 that has a salvage title so the recall would not be honored. Nonetheless, thanks to your video I repaired the micro switch by making a slight bend the actuator. You saved me big bucks am sure. Thanks again.
Especially the early ones, on this video mine is a 2005 ion 3 , my daughter's 2006 ion has no problem! So,I wont waist my time taking it apart just to find out. Who else but GM could really tell ! I want you to know that with this fix it works great and am very happy with it. I got this car for really really cheap and that was the cause it was being sold. I like this car! About your 2003 saturn ion, if you return from a drive and you can't turn the key back to OFF ( it stop at ACC! ) sometimes, all the times, once in a while then that is where i'd look. One easy way to find out is to remove the little cover under the steering column use finger and feel white plunger in or out and play with stick shift trigger.
You wanna know a little trick if your shifter gets suck the little hole that has a cover on it Take the little cover off put a nail pencil in push down it will let you move it into gear incase it's locks up on you till you can get fixed works swear too god.
Also watch ua-cam.com/video/rG8zkJctv9A/v-deo.html to have a better view at that switch. Back to this video at about 8:40 re-assembly , it is hard to see all black pieces but simple ( body assy, microswitch & holding clip ) only one way cant miss. read all annotations. I will make a better video next time as I will replace that switch summer 2014 ( big winter here ). subscribe to my channel so you dont miss.
To Gary Zaetz, If you watched this video then you know what to do before battery goes dead . If you need to recharge or boost the battery... I suggest www.saturnfans.com/forums/ do some reading about it
Pete - this is the ONLY issue I have had with this vehicle. Use only key in the switch,[ not heavy key ring has helped much.] here are some instructions that may be of help in the future... Thanks, Betty {if I still had my Dad's tools, I'd correct this myself - but I know you folks can do the job.

Your video helped for me to explain what was going on to someone who could do the repair! Thanks!
If You watch part 2 You Will understand better

Wish I had saw this before yesterday! I was getting an ignition for a friend from a coupe, broke the key in the ignition!

Life saver, and thank you for getting direct to the point i literally just did this😘😘😘😘😘
Try pushing the transmission more into park. Sometimes you can be parked, but it won't let you take the key until you push it all the way.
This is the permanent fix

This seems to be a very common problem with Saturns.
When my ignition broke on my 2003 Saturn Ion, I took the vin number to Chevy Dealer. It was on recall. They towed it to shop and fixed it for free.

Great Video so helpful thank you so much.
GM should be held accountable for key not coming out of ignition. This car is the worst car I ever own.
dan do you know how to fix this problem on a manual?
I would also try wiggle the steering wheel real good

I have a Saturn ion but it's a stick shift. I tried finding that switch in the first couple seconds but I can't
NO! cars with manual transmission does not require such device so you wont find it.
Suscribed! Thanks for making these videos.
