My 99 4runner won’t crank no start sometimes. Also, the keys pulls out while it is on. I want to sell my car but want to fix this problem first. What do u think I should do?
I've got an elusive problem. Initially I was led to think that the problem was to do with a bad ignition switch because, first, the car turns off then runs for half a second more, when power to the engine is cut off by turning the key. However, because this only happens when the car is hot, I'm thinking it is the ignition control module inside the distributor that is on its way out. It is difficult to start, particularly when it's hot, and it has progressively been getting worse. Would love to hear anyone's comments on this. The car is a 91' Mitsubishi Lancer (carburettor).

Its alright "guessing" when its someone else's money LOL, its knowing WHICH one it is that's causing the fault, needs the skill of a real mechanic, big difference.
actually before you go ripping out a fuse or relay to get the engine to turn off, try pressing the brake pedal, it should kill it after key is removed, this fixes nothing and you still have an ignition issue you have to get checked asap before you get stranded but at least you can turn it off for the time being
Brake didn't work for me when mine did that and it failed to turn off about a handful of times over the 5 years I've owned it. I had to turn it back on the off 1 time, another time I had to kill it by releasing the clutch while in gear(ouch) and can't remember the other times but it freaked me out the 1st time. Now my car won't turn over. As soon as I try to start it all power goes away. I'm banking on it's the ignition. Also, I've locked myself out several times because of the ignition failing to alert me my keys were still in the ignition 🤦
@@officermeyer dang what kinda car you got? i got a 2011 mazda3 sport and mine turns off when pressing the brake pedal when i take the key out but otherwise it runs for about a minute then auto shuts off. i was told it has to do with the electric connector to the parking brake, i dont have an electric park brake but there's a wire that goes to my park brake and they said if they disconnect that wire it will solve the issue so you can try that. as long as you have the typical mechanical parking brake it will still work but the light wont show up on your dash is all. but either way it's probably our ignitions
Ignition switches are spring loaded and that spring can get worn out or break. Also the Lock Cylinder actually turns a squared shaft which can snap or even shatter so nothing happens when you turn the key fully clockwise.
@@danielchavez3264 no I don’t think so. I’ve got several cars but the time I wrote this is when I had very mysterious problems with my 15 Ford Fusion se Long story short- it went away on its own. Those problems just disappeared. Car works perfectly normal now. 🤷🏽
2012 Chevy equinox and car sounds like it’s about to cut off while at a light and no check engine light on , changed mass flow sensor and purge valve , when i take the key out ignition it take a few secs for the car to turn off
Another problem is that when you turn to crank the engine to start it, the car electricity cuts right away. The AM1 and 2 fuses kept blowing. It can be a faulty electrical problem from the ignition switch.
@@lilberto803 fist thing u should do. If ur AM fuse keep blowing is replace it, then go under the car bonnet and jerk at the wire harness. Most times the fuse blow bec a wire is burnt and its touching the engine and grounding. Before u replace the ignition switch u should check to confirm if its bad. Then u need the vehilce type and year look the part up.
For me i have a 2004 toyota and i see alot of them with the same problem. All u do is give the wore harness a tug like 2 times them start the car, if the fuse dont blow there is the prob. 90% of times that is the problem.

Haven't had fuses blow, but first time today, the battery dropped from full power to 7V, after I touched the + cable IN, to the TIPM, and stayed there, until I unhooked a connector attached to the side of the TIPM(plastic holder, I don't think it was the connector touching anything, but after disconnecting it, the batttery climbed right back to 11V... IDK, that's all new after years.... for years, half the time perfect start, and half the time full power, no crank,.... but if I hold the FOBIK against the spring long enough, it eventually starts, anywhere from 30 secs to 5 mins I've held it, and it goes like it should. Never had another problem. aarrggghhhh lol peace

We got a 2003 explorer that randomly dies and randomly no start and has no codes but always will crank. If it is running all lights will shut off like when you have the key out. This could very well be it? I was thinking a ground cable too but It is absolutely random, parked, driving, left turns, right turns, bumps, no bumps. What you all think?

What about if the ignition is heating up as you drive so when you stop and turn the car off, both it and your key are hot to the touch? Is that a problem with the ignition switch?

Hi! My radio hasn’t been turning off the last two weeks until I turn off my car (which will then cut power to it it seems, otherwise I press the radio on/off button and it just stays on). Tried to start my car today after not driving it for a week and it’s super close to starting but won’t go. Do you think it’s related to the ignition switch/radio issue? It’s a mid-90s Mitsubishi and I read that it could be related to a faulty ignition switch. I’ll probably just jump it in the meantime but curious if this might be correlated - any insight is super appreciated!
Please help!! When i turn the key to accessories, everything comes up fine. However, when i turn the key to the start position, it does absolutely nothing. I have a new automatic CVT car. Since I have arthritis in my hands, I can't rotate the ignition key at once from Lock to Start. Instead, I turn from Lock to ON, I release my hand and turn to start. Since doing like this, there is sometimes a screeching sound when I twist from ON to Start, this noise stops after I release the key and the engine starts. Even though I pay attention to release the key rigth after the engine starts. What do you think this problem comes from ? I suspect because of my arthritis, I turn the key too far to the Start position. I have had this screeching sound a couple times so far. Could it already have caused damage to the teeth on the flywhell and on the starter ? Thank you.

@@DIXIEMAFIA251 well to make long story short , I’ve taken to several shops they had different opinions . The last shop car acted perfectly normal and they couldn’t scan it. From that day on it’s still working perfectly normal. I dunno 🤷🏽♂️

do you think this can actually happen? i have a 2003 lexus rx 300 in very good condition in which im the second owner ( i purchased from a friend original owner) about 5 weeks ago i started vehicle with my 2 year old aftermarket remote starter. the starter stayed engaged and i didn’t realize it until 10 minutes later when i went to vehicle i heard abnormal sound from engine compartment. i noticed too when i shut vehicle off and attempted to restart with key it would crank in the ACC position i replaced the starter with a remanufactured starter from my local auto part store but i was still having same issue. i took car to the remote start installer and he said everything was working as should with it which i kind of figured was true because i was also having issue with just trying to start with key itself ( kind of a test) he did tell me i had a dead cell in battery which i replaced. my alternator is fine as well. so i put another starter in (they exchanged the first reman starter) car was fine starting for about 5 days then again acted up again. so now i tried a new starter relay and it started fine for 5 days until this morning. i attempted starting with remote starter it hung up shut car off started with key and it hung up. while going to pull relay and opening hood i heard it disengage. so now im wondering COULD IT BE THE IGNITION SWITCH? seeing that it happens no matter with remote or just by trying to start with key? and as i mentioned i noticed it wanted to crank at ACC POSITION a few times. i’ve read other comments about the ignition switch can cause issues just aggravating because it happens intermittently @@christianarocho3904
On a 2002 Chevy s10, a bad switch will cause intermittent power to the gauges and the transmission power goes through that switch too and when it loses power, it goes into limp mode and you have to pull over and shut off the truck and turn it back on to reset the transmission and then it’s fine until it loses power again
2016 ecoboost f150. I simply only insert key straight into ignition. (I’m not turning or cranking it yet.) the truck makes a buzzing noise for like 6 seconds then stops. I proceed to turn on truck . The noise sounds lie something electric on the rear but I understand noise travels. Any thoughts?
I can charge brand new battery for 30 seconds and truck starts. Brand new terminal lines over battery post. As soon as I take foot off of the accelerator, the engine shuts off and will not restart until I jump start for 30 seconds. Engine again stalls immediately after releasing petal. Ignition switch?
Would a bad ignition switch cause these two issue. 1. Accessory ignition stays on even when key is fully turned off and removed from barrel. 2. Car only starts after several attempts turning the key. Thanks.

I have the same problem. If I don't start my jeep after a few days then the battery dies. Sometimes I know the battery is not dead because I drive it everyday but when I turn the key to start the jeep, nothing happens. It only does one click. I have to have the key in a certain position when I turn the key to start the car and that seems to work. My ASD relay switch also seems to get burned out because I have to replace it every year. So I'm thinking that the ignition switch and the ignition lock cylinder are the problem because it may not be shutting off everything after I turn the Jeep off.

I have a 08 Buick lacrosse the key keeps getting stuck everytime I try to start it, it will not crank either, It only clicks. I replaced the starter and the battery nothing worked. I really don’t wanna sell it but I need to know what to do asap. None of the lights come on either the only way to get the key out is by getting a jump from another car but then it won’t even start still.

Mine is a seat Cordoba. Changed the starter but still won't crank at all. So were gonna wire it to a push button. Think the ignition switch is gone on it.😅

My 2016 Jeep Patriot is just lately experiencing a problem but not every time I think it's the ignition switch but this symptom isn't mentioned in this video. I turn the key to start and it cranks fast but doesn't attempt to start. I release the key to run and it continues to crank. I turn the key to off and it stops cranking. It doesn't do this every time but I think it's a symptom of a failing ignition switch or key assembly. Any thoughts?

Sisters 2013 nissan sentra wont start, she replaced bad starter but still wont start. She has new battery as well. I can take my FOBIK out(2009 RAM) while driving, or parked, and the truck will keep running, but I can't, as you say, turn it to the off position and have it keep running, so I'm not quite sure what to think... Is this basically the same problem, the ignition switch, or is this also rare, and it's own problem?? I have full power, but no crank, no clicks, nothing happens, but if I hold the FOBIK against the spring, it eventually just starts. Maybe 30 secs, maybe 5 mins... I had ruled out the ignition module, because using the remote start, same thing, no start, and messages - 'disabled the remoter starter' and 'system fault'. My only problem is, I need to wiggle the key back and forth and stuff in the start position to get it to fire up. I’ll start with getting a new ignition switch and hopefully that fixes the problem. Thanks for the video.

Idk what to do fam. I turn the key and it turns on the accessories in my car but my car won’t start until I turn it off and on several times. I just had the entire ignition replaced because we thought it might of been this or a bad lock cylinder but even with everything brand new, IT IS STILL DOING IT. Battery and alternator both checked out and passed their tests so they’re fine. Idk what else it could be. Maybe the starter? My car will eventually start but it takes like 2-4 times of putting the key in, turning it, and taking it back out for it to actually start.
My problem, my radio will turn on randomly by its self over night and it is killing my battery. Sometimes when I step out my car, my radio doesn’t turn off so I have to turn my ignition lock cylinder back and forward to turn it off. Is this the radio it’s self causing this??

2010 VW Jetta. The key wouldn't turn at all. I did what most suggested and used a little oil. Key now turns to the point of radio playing but wont go any further. I've done the wiggling, etc. Before I have to go sell a kidney or my kid on the black-market to cover the cost, any idea of what is going on???
I switched car batteries, but now i just turn my key and nothing happens not even the speedometer or any electronics turn on. No time, no dash, only an airbag light is on but nothing else. I can simply touch the key hole without my keys and my shit will start up and then turn off. When it does this I just go in the house and I can hear my car cranking itself over and over again while a grab a beer.
My 86 300zx will start and die immediately. I have a code for a bad ignition switch. To me it doesn’t make sense because when put in run position, everything gets power. Unless what was stated in the video is true that after starting my cars just shuts off.

actually before you go ripping out a fuse or relay to get the engine to turn off, try pressing the brake pedal, it should kill it after key is removed, this fixes nothing and you still have an ignition issue you have to get checked asap before you get stranded but at least you can turn it off for the time being
Brake didn't work for me when mine did that and it failed to turn off about a handful of times over the 5 years I've owned it. I had to turn it back on the off 1 time, another time I had to kill it by releasing the clutch while in gear(ouch) and can't remember the other times but it freaked me out the 1st time. Now my car won't turn over. As soon as I try to start it all power goes away. I'm banking on it's the ignition. Also, I've locked myself out several times because of the ignition failing to alert me my keys were still in the ignition 🤦
@@officermeyer dang what kinda car you got? i got a 2011 mazda3 sport and mine turns off when pressing the brake pedal when i take the key out but otherwise it runs for about a minute then auto shuts off. i was told it has to do with the electric connector to the parking brake, i dont have an electric park brake but there's a wire that goes to my park brake and they said if they disconnect that wire it will solve the issue so you can try that. as long as you have the typical mechanical parking brake it will still work but the light wont show up on your dash is all. but either way it's probably our ignitions
Ignition switches are spring loaded and that spring can get worn out or break. Also the Lock Cylinder actually turns a squared shaft which can snap or even shatter so nothing happens when you turn the key fully clockwise.

Why would you replace the starter for an issue like that? It already is started so the starter obviously was perfectly fine
2012 Chevy equinox and car sounds like it’s about to cut off while at a light and no check engine light on , changed mass flow sensor and purge valve , when i take the key out ignition it take a few secs for the car to turn off

Another problem is that when you turn to crank the engine to start it, the car electricity cuts right away. The AM1 and 2 fuses kept blowing. It can be a faulty electrical problem from the ignition switch.

@@lilberto803 fist thing u should do. If ur AM fuse keep blowing is replace it, then go under the car bonnet and jerk at the wire harness. Most times the fuse blow bec a wire is burnt and its touching the engine and grounding. Before u replace the ignition switch u should check to confirm if its bad. Then u need the vehilce type and year look the part up.
For me i have a 2004 toyota and i see alot of them with the same problem. All u do is give the wore harness a tug like 2 times them start the car, if the fuse dont blow there is the prob. 90% of times that is the problem.

Haven't had fuses blow, but first time today, the battery dropped from full power to 7V, after I touched the + cable IN, to the TIPM, and stayed there, until I unhooked a connector attached to the side of the TIPM(plastic holder, I don't think it was the connector touching anything, but after disconnecting it, the batttery climbed right back to 11V... IDK, that's all new after years.... for years, half the time perfect start, and half the time full power, no crank,.... but if I hold the FOBIK against the spring long enough, it eventually starts, anywhere from 30 secs to 5 mins I've held it, and it goes like it should. Never had another problem. aarrggghhhh lol peace

We got a 2003 explorer that randomly dies and randomly no start and has no codes but always will crank. If it is running all lights will shut off like when you have the key out. This could very well be it? I was thinking a ground cable too but It is absolutely random, parked, driving, left turns, right turns, bumps, no bumps.

What about if the ignition is heating up as you drive so when you stop and turn the car off, both it and your key are hot to the touch? Is that a problem with the ignition switch?

Hi! My radio hasn’t been turning off the last two weeks until I turn off my car (which will then cut power to it it seems, otherwise I press the radio on/off button and it just stays on). Hi I have a 2007 Honda odyssey absolute. It started randomly struggling to start some days some times would take afew gos. I have a new automatic CVT car. Since I have arthritis in my hands, I can't rotate the ignition key at once from Lock to Start. Instead, I turn from Lock to ON, I release my hand and turn to start.
Since doing like this, there is sometimes a screeching sound when I twist from ON to Start, this noise stops after I release the key and the engine starts. Even though I pay attention to release the key rigth after the engine starts.
What do you think this problem comes from ? I suspect because of my arthritis, I turn the key too far to the Start position.

do you think this can actually happen? i have a 2003 lexus rx 300 in very good condition in which im the second owner ( i purchased from a friend original owner) about 5 weeks ago i started vehicle with my 2 year old aftermarket remote starter. the starter stayed engaged and i didn’t realize it until 10 minutes later when i went to vehicle i heard abnormal sound from engine compartment. i noticed too when i shut vehicle off and attempted to restart with key it would crank in the ACC position i replaced the starter with a remanufactured starter from my local auto part store but i was still having same issue. i took car to the remote start installer and he said everything was working as should with it which i kind of figured was true because i was also having issue with just trying to start with key itself ( kind of a test) he did tell me i had a dead cell in battery which i replaced. my alternator is fine as well. so i put another starter in (they exchanged the first reman starter) car was fine starting for about 5 days then again acted up again. so now i tried a new starter relay and it started fine for 5 days until this morning. i attempted starting with remote starter it hung up shut car off started with key and it hung up. while going to pull relay and opening hood i heard it disengage. so now im wondering COULD IT BE THE IGNITION SWITCH? seeing that it happens no matter with remote or just by trying to start with key? and as i mentioned i noticed it wanted to crank at ACC POSITION a few times. i’ve read other comments about the ignition switch can cause issues just aggravating because it happens intermittently @@christianarocho3904
On a 2002 Chevy s10, a bad switch will cause intermittent power to the gauges and the transmission power goes through that switch too and when it loses power, it goes into limp mode and you have to pull over and shut off the truck and turn it back on to reset the transmission and then it’s fine until it loses power again

2016 ecoboost f150. I simply only insert key straight into ignition. (I’m not turning or cranking it yet.) the truck makes a buzzing noise for like 6 seconds then stops. I proceed to turn on truck . The noise sounds lie something electric on the rear but I understand noise travels. Any thoughts?

I can charge brand new battery for 30 seconds and truck starts. Brand new terminal lines over battery post. As soon as I take foot off of the accelerator, the engine shuts off and will not restart until I jump start for 30 seconds. Engine again stalls immediately after releasing petal. Ignition switch?
Would a bad ignition switch cause these two issue.

I have the same problem. If I don't start my jeep after a few days then the battery dies. Sometimes I know the battery is not dead because I drive it everyday but when I turn the key to start the jeep, nothing happens. It only does one click. I have to have the key in a certain position when I turn the key to start the car and that seems to work. My ASD relay switch also seems to get burned out because I have to replace it every year. So I'm thinking that the ignition switch and the ignition lock cylinder are the problem because it may not be shutting off everything after I turn the Jeep off.

I have a 08 Buick lacrosse the key keeps getting stuck everytime I try to start it, it will not crank either, It only clicks. I replaced the starter and the battery nothing worked. I really don’t wanna sell it but I need to know what to do asap. None of the lights come on either the only way to get the key out is by getting a jump from another car but then it won’t even start still.

Mine is a seat Cordoba. Changed the starter but still won't crank at all. So were gonna wire it to a push button. Think the ignition switch is gone on it.😅

My 2016 Jeep Patriot is just lately experiencing a problem but not every time I think it's the ignition switch but this symptom isn't mentioned in this video. I turn the key to start and it cranks fast but doesn't attempt to start. I release the key to run and it continues to crank. I turn the key to off and it stops cranking. It doesn't do this every time but I think it's a symptom of a failing ignition switch or key assembly. Any thoughts?

I can take my FOBIK out(2009 RAM) while driving, or parked, and the truck will keep running, but I can't, as you say, turn it to the off position and have it keep running, so I'm not quite sure what to think... Is this basically the same problem, the ignition switch, or is this also rare, and it's own problem?? I have full power, but no crank, no clicks, nothing happens, but if I hold the FOBIK against the spring, it eventually just starts. Maybe 30 secs, maybe 5 mins...
I had ruled out the ignition module, because using the remote start, same thing, no start, and messages - 'disabled the remoter starter' and 'system fault'. But I watched this video, cz I've never been 100% about anything. Maddening

Idk what to do fam. I turn the key and it turns on the accessories in my car but my car won’t start until I turn it off and on several times. I just had the entire ignition replaced because we thought it might of been this or a bad lock cylinder but even with everything brand new, IT IS STILL DOING IT. Battery and alternator both checked out and passed their tests so they’re fine. Idk what else it could be. Maybe the starter? My car will eventually start but it takes like 2-4 times of putting the key in, turning it, and taking it back out for it to actually start.

2010 VW Jetta. The key wouldn't turn at all. I did what most suggested and used a little oil. Key now turns to the point of radio playing but wont go any further. My 2000 Silverado (5.3) keeps breaking down! SOMEBODY HELP!! My key started sticking last month. Then my water pump went. Since replacing the water pump.. 8 days ago... If I stop the car in parking lot then go to buy drink in 7 Eleven, when I come back , I can't start the engine ! No crank , no sound ... ! But if i wait about 1 hour , I can start engine again ! I have 2 choice : wait 1 hour for the engine cool down to start or request help for other car to give a jump cable to start engine . I only change the alternator , the starter , the battery , the starter relay but the same problem happened ! Do you think I need to replace ignition switch ? Please help !
I can simply touch the key hole without my keys and my shit will start up and then turn off. When it does this I just go in the house and I can hear my car cranking itself over and over again while a grab a beer.

My 86 300zx will start and die immediately. I have a code for a bad ignition switch. To me it doesn’t make sense because when put in run position, everything gets power. Unless what was stated in the video is true that after starting my cars just shuts off.
