Kind of related, but my Native American teacher said that it was weird for him to integrate into a society where we see leaders as better than everyone else, rather than someone with a different job. He said a leader should be a consensus consultant rather than someone who tells you what to do unless needed, and that really made me do a double take and rethink leadership for myself.

this whole 'leader of the friend group' thing, ESPECIALLY with how kwite describes it, just sounds a whole lot like a thinly veiled poly dom/sub relationship between friends. y'know, having to always listen to and ask permission from the leader, being punished for disobedience, seeing them as superior in a way...
also I've never experienced this in any of my friends groups, though we did have people who were basically the parents/caretakers of the rest of the group, giving advice and stopping them from doing stupid shit, and i am unfortunately one of them lol

One day I have a fight with the group and leave it. Right after I learn that the group fell apart bc they realized how different they rlly were. A lot of them came back to me and told me it wasn't the same without me there. That I was the glue holding the group together.
I realized I was actually the leader of the group bc without me the group didn't rlly exist. Somehow I was the leader without even knowing it.
The group was filled with about 9-10 ppl and now that I think about it they were all pretty different. I just was always able to get on the same level as everyone. I remember being exhausted bc I was always solving everyone's problems. Ig without even noticing I took on that role. It was just natural.

Lemme tell you a little story that happened to me one time. I was in a friend group (no I was not the leader) and we used to text each other every now and then. Just sending dumb things, until it happened. The friend group leader made a Shitpost, which was a normal thing to do in the friend group. I decided to make a Shitpost and everybody thought "Yeah that's funny". However, the friend group leader did not get the same reaction. So what did he do? He started whining about how he did better and how he actually put effort. We all told him its just a Shitpost but no. He then decided to threaten one of my closest friends who did absolutely nothing and was just sitting and watching. After a while we all kicked him out of our friend group and decided its best with no leader or anything like that. It's now present day and we still make fun of him every now and then.
Edit: Thanks for the likes everyone but I have something to share... Im mostly being used as the "punching bag" in my friend group, emotionally and physically after it has grown much more. But they are the only friends i've ever had... What should i do?

I was the leader of my massive friend group for 3 years. Me and my, at the time, best friend co founded it to basically be a “safe haven” for everyone else who got bullied, excluded, or simply had no place to go in a school of either extremely rich or extremely poor pre-teens. No one took it seriously, I was only the co leader because I brought most of them together and played group therapist (which turned very toxic and unhealthy for me but anyway-). Then during Covid, my at that point closest friend betrayed me during a depression spiral, took my position, turned everyone against me, and it’s still spreading rumors about me 4 years later. Took away all my credibility for anything. But I’m actually thankful, those people never liked or respected me, they used me because I had an in with the very rich & popular kids. Now I only have 3 friends (including the one who founded it with me) and I’m happier than ever! Only the real homies stand the test of time 💪🏻

My friend group never had a "leader," 3 people basically were the leader, just split into all the dumb parts.
    We had
"father figure 1"/"therapist figure 1" who adopted everyone and had most of the brains, but still could not contain/help the horde, they just made sure everybody got a gift for Christmas and everybody was drinking water and stuff
"father figure 2"/"grandpa figure" who just adopted everyone but wasn't around a whole lot, and provided political opinions
Me, the "I'm adopting all of you because somehow you're dumber than me and I could probably stop you from drinking the hand sanitizer, but I'm also the one who gave you the idea in the first place figure"/ "slight parental figure"/ "therapist figure 2", who had trouble remembering stuff, but I could scream louder than anybody else and get everybody to shut up and listen for about 5 entire seconds
And those were the only people who had the slightest idea of what they were doing, and combined we 3 lead the group, but we did so in the worst ways you could while also keeping everybody somehow alive and mostly intact. Like, we would come up with the idea of jumping out the window to go look for stray cats, but we would also yell at and stop anybody who tried, and eventually cave because kittens are adorable but only if everybody was back by 10:00.

Like you gotta have somebody to make sure people don’t forget what day of the week it is when almost all of us live in different time zones. But like with my irl group where there’s 4 of us we obviously don’t need somebody like that so we don’t really have a group leader

As a fellow friend group leader I'm willing to share my knowledge in this field
I must say, I'm not here to judge any disciplinary methods but to share the method that I personally use in my friend group.
Image is a really big factor for a leader, your underlyings must feel fear, admiration, love and trust when thinking of you. You should avoid the extremes, while a reign of just terror or just love may work, they have weak foundations and will collapse when changes approach. You and your friend will grow and change, is the leader job to assure that the group stays together, change together.
Sometimes Is difficult to adjust everyone in a way that doesn't overlap ideas bringing arguments, but it is possible. The real problem start when all the friend group but one is in harmony. Yeah, you could just kick them out but things may be more complicated than they appear, maybe is jealous over the others, felling neglected by you or even unworthy of the group. If that is the case, the fault is on the leader. It is important to remember that you are a friend group and not a "family". You choose to stay together, to assure that everyone is having a god time and when they feel down you choose to be by their side. You choose to have this responsibility over each other, you are not bound by blood or heritage but you still choose to stay.
Your job as a leader is not to just command your friends, you have to make sure that they are having a good time and feeling safe.
One of my friends gets really smad when they are feeling insecure and one thing that makes him feel better is being in control of things, when he is like this I try to give him comfort by treating him as the leader of the friend group, this makes he know how essential he is to our group even if he is a tyrant.

    • @WixenBurr
      @WixenBurr Рік тому +7

Ah yes, quite so. I brought all of my underlings together and made a safe space for them. I dare not rule them with an "iron fist," but instead with care and empathy, for that is what the poor souls need. In return, i gain their undying loyalty and friendship.
My image is the fun, joking, kind, and a bit quirky i suppose relative leader. We have an "inside joke" that i am "god" so they use my name in a phrase like "oh my god" and such. All part of my master plan, of course. (/hj)
They rarely need any discipline, because all of them are quite mellow, but whenever things become uncomfortable for anyone they always know that they can come to me and I will deal with it. I am the peacekeeper and i take that job seriously.
Your note about "you have to make sure that they are having a good time and feeling safe." is very very true, i completely agree. To attain their loyalty, one must be a benevolent ruler, yes? The whole goal of our group is a safe place for all of them, we are very very accepting and willing to adapt for our friends. Although not too much, because one cannot become a group of pushovers just for one person. If that were the case, that person would have to be eliminated (from the friend group).
Always good to see a fellow leader with such like-mindedness. :D

Note: I didn't call myself the leader or even acknowledge that they were doing that, for me we were all just chiling, I discovered in religion class (It was a class we had to learn about different cultures and their beliefs, but also how to respect them) , where we were talking about leaders, and then there was an activity asking who was the leader of your group (friends, family, religion, etc) and both of them wrote my name.
