I kept checking the weather like “oh it’s gonna get cold next week. Better bundle up! :D”. No. Once the power shut off it was over. And then it never came back on for the next few days. “Okay. I’ll just put on 3 blankets and light a candle so I can run to the bathro-.....wha....where’s the water?”

So many people in my pet groups on FB have been talking about their animals (mostly reptiles and fish, but I’ve seen one about an elder cat also) dying in the cold and power outages. Its heartbreaking. One woman said she kept her snake in a pillowcase under her shirt for 30+ hours just to keep it warm enough to survive
Yeah as a reptile owner I have no idea what I would've done. I have a crested gecko and they're one of the few who can deal with cooler temperatures but at most he can take like 15°C(60°F) and that's only comfortable for him at night. Just going without electricity for a long period of time could be devastating for your pets health :(
That is terible
Ps nice profile picture
Seeing the frozen fish tank just broke my soul, I felt so bad for all the caretakers who had no way of knowing and were unprepared for _snow_ in Texas of all places
That's what I wound up doing with my scorpions! All of them went into their little cups that went into a bag that went under my shirt that went under my coat that went under my other coat. Temperatures below freezing for days and no power at all, and it was like that for days!!
At least my palace is nice and warm during this brutal winter
No need to flex
Big fan man, love your work
Can we come over?
Too soon
When are you going to share the nuke codes?
I'm a northener and at first I thought it was a joke, that it's just a "little snow." Then I learned it's not a joke and some people are actually dying and many others are without power or even food. They weren't prepared for it, their houses certaintly weren't and the people definitely weren't. Some don't even know how to deal with it, or how to even properly walk on black ice (the ice that's hard to see) or how to wear warm clothes. (some don't even have any since it's texas)
I hope any Texans watching this are okay, jeez..

My family was fortunate enough to only ahve 10 minutes of outage and no burst pipes we were also ready if we ran out of food since just before the snow we went to the store.
Hi girl from the Navajo reservation here, I can offer a few tips from my own experiences.
•Block your windows at night when it gets windy. If you don't have good insulation there's a huge chance that there will be hella strong winds and your room will get drafty so cover up your windows at night to help block that.
•Make sure your neck is covered and kept warm especially the little ones. You have to keep your internal temperature constant, if this drops that means hypothermia.
•Set your bed away from the direction of your window. Keep your bed at the wall furthest from your window so wind will hit you less Like I said it can get hella drafty. It won't be warmer but at least it won't be breezy.
•Collect dry sticks, leaves, use paper and other items when starting a fire but don't do it in the house. Be careful when forging because there are laws that prevent people from forging and collecting wood. These laws were to stop Black and Indigenous folks from getting stuff they need so be careful when doing this.
•Cover up windows with bed sheets, pillow cases, basically any thin fabrics. We do this a lot on the rez since most people don't even buy curtain, we just use blankets and stuff. This actually helps and again it's even better with boxes and cabinets blocking said windows to prevent wind from coming into the house.
•I know it's too cold to bathe yourself so wash your hair like twice a week and make sure you wash only your genitals, armpits and buttocks. I live in an area where there is no running water or electricity so this is a common practice during the winter.
•Collect clean fresh snow and boil it by using a fire for fresh clean water. In Navajo January is translated to, "Fried Snow." Again be careful when doing this make sure the snow is white, clean, and fresh so you can melt it but I still suggest boiling it if you can.
These are just some things I can think of at the top of my head. This is a sort of normal winter on the reservation for many families and these are things that I find normal that I hope help.
When I say that we’re so egotistical that everyone thought we’d be unaffected and be fine... how do we handle hurricanes better than this
Because a desert isn’t supposed to freeze
we know what to do with hurricanes. happens every year, multiple times. especially for those of us on the coast. we don’t give a shit anymore. the 2005 season was the last time my family even bothered to evacuate hahaha. historical freezes however? definitely not as prepared for that shit lmaoo
I don’t know. Up here in Wisconsin, we’ll get three feet of snow and -40 degree weather and the most that will happen is school shutting down for the day so the kids don’t have to be outside. Meanwhile, down in the South, you guys are practically living in 19th century Canada.
@@jonathantheslow well because it wasn't normal snow and Texas isn't built for it
Russians having flashbacks watching the state texas is in.
My friend is Russian and is here I wonder what he thinks of this
😂😂😂
A huge factor in what's making it so bad is that buildings in Texas aren't built ready for nearly this amount of snow, since it's Texas. Compound that with the fact that this would be crazy amounts of snow even in Maine or Minnesota, and this is a recipe for disaster.
Edit: It was mostly the architecture being vastly not prepared at all for this. The lowest temperatures didn't go below 0 Fahrenheit, and the snow didn't go anywhere above half a foot. It's still a disaster, but not one entirely caused by the weather.
a foot and a half of snow is nothing compared to the snow in Minnesota, but true there buildings are not prepared with heating systems and insulation (like thick amounts of it) nor would most ppl have a shovel or plow trucks to move snow out of the way
"Only the strong will survive"
I survived and my salt is melting the snow in the surrounding area enough to thaw the town
The only thing I'm upset about is that there was a lot of snow and I couldn't really play in it due to no power at all.
I have snow about 8 feet tall where I live and everything was fine. How is texas housing and power so shit?!
@@FoxTrot63 We aren't really prepared for this shit lol, it's been decades since weather like this.

Texan here and man it was nuts. I work at a grocery store and the week leading up, during ,and after was INSANE. I managed to be able to work earlier that week and it fell on like Valentines day. I didn't live too far from work at the time so I went in at like 4 in the morning. We had call out after call out with customers just flooding the store. Which I got but at a point it was chaos cause we barely got workers in the store and limits on items. Then the second half of the week my family luckily had a fireplace ( but not water or power) and nice neighbors who we shared stuff with ( we gave them extra wood cause they had kids and older family while they let us use their cooker since it was three of us). Once the storm was over and I could go back to work it was awful! The pluming didn't work so no bathrooms for anyone, people still couldn't get to work, and there was barely anything in the store cause trucks couldn't come in so we had no stock and customers were turds. People just could not wrap their heads around us saying " You can't get that many because we only have so much and other people need them too."
