As an old dsmp fan, this video is making me realize how difficult the history of the dsmp is and how unfazed I was about that.
In the early days, watching Tommy's highlight videos basically caught anyone up on the DSMP lore. That, and there wasn't as much of it. Now, you need a Master's in Confusing Lore from Hideo Kojima University to understand any of what is going on

I think the fact that there's an actual world history in the dreamsmp is fucking hilarious. I've always looked at it and thought it was just a server where people messed around, I didn't know it had this much history to it till now and I find that amazing. I can see why it brought so many people together, it's just sad how it brought the wrong kind of people together
It’s very much both a server with actual world history and where people just messed around. I didn’t know anything about it until an animatic sucked me in, and then I became one of the people who knew the entire timeline and could tell people which vod or clip the thing they were trying to find was in, or dredge up some obscure event from early on to argue character motivations and morality.
That being said, it was all complete absolute nonsense between the fantastic quotes. Just skimming through Wilbur’s wiki you could probably figure out that individual characters aren’t even consistent with themselves, let alone in a greater narrative that is at all cohesive under any scrutiny. I mean he physically ended up in literal goddamn irl Utah. There are things that are canon, semi-canon, canon depending on who you ask, retcons, outtakes, actual branching timelines and contradicting world mechanics. I’ve had hour long rants about a handful of lines about minecraft monday accidentally pulling basically the entire minecraft multiverse into the lore.
I think the fact that it was just people messing around and accidentally stumbling into a multiact saga of death, betrayal, and conflict was what made it fun though. There were lighthearted debates about which ridiculous one-off quotes and details were going to spiral into full on arcs, and you could watch cool fan art and suggestions become part of the story in real time. The possibilities for audience interaction and interpretation were limitless. And then the number of people who started taking what is inherently one of the most crack smps and group of streamers way too seriously kept skyrocketing, until the negativity and scandal consumed the growing months between new content, interest died, and the good people eventually splintered off of the main fandom almost completely or got tired and left.
Sorry for the whole essay, I was really procrastinating my english work.

As a dream SMP enjoyer, I would like to apologize for these people. They make me embarrassed to be a part of the community. Apart from watching their videos and having a TommyInnit pfp, I try to stay as far away from the fandom as possible. The people who quote them religiously, make thirst edits or just make awful NSFW pieces of art are the reason we’re bullied. I’m sorry for these people

I'm not a dream stan or even a fan, but I'm in another fandom. One that's been around for a long time. And i 100% know what you mean.
It's all about who you associate with.
There are subsets of really weird messed up not-all-there people, and there's the majority of just average normal cool people, and I've made dozens of really good local irl friends from that majority. And I hang out with them often.
But if someone bases their whole existence around a fandom or being a stan of anyone, they really should get some help.
Hobbies are hobbies, but when it crosses over into obsession, it's not healthy.

As someone who is apart of the DSMP fandom, I’m really sorry for the behavior of the stans in the community. It’s hard to even associate with the fandom sometimes because of those people. I’ve had people actually tell me to kms because I watch Ranboo….I don’t even like Dream like at all. I’ve gradually been leaving the fandom but I’m still in it. I just watch Ranboo now but people still attack me just for that. All I want to say is just be nice to everyone in the fandom unless they engage negatively with you first. But mostly try to keep in mind that most of the fandom aren’t stans, just fans. That’s all I wanted to say. Have an amazing day/night!

A year ago or so I was absolutely obsessed with the dreamsmp and because none of my friends knew what it was I would write lengthy text messages of the conflicts, characters and dynamics like a madman (I didn’t even have the wiki up my memory’s clogged up with this shit 😭). It’s scary what the weird love of something can do
I think what the dream smp fans do is really impressive when it's artistic like animatics, edits, art things, Cosplay, and especially the writing. That's why I love the fandom so much. "Stans" are the scary ones, of course, like when they harass and threaten others. I feel like I can't leave a nice comment without addressing that because I just get attacked for enjoying what I do lmao

The fact that I just now found out there was a wiki for this is interesting to say the least, but also the whole over view of lore and how difficult the lore is to someone who hasn't spent days of their time watching lore.
I know this is late, but hey.
I didn't realize that the lore was so much and I don't know how I remembered any of the dreamsmp lore and still remember a very good portion of it
My favorite thing about the dream smp fandom is how creative they are. Sure there are some... odd arts out there, but there are aslo so many great fanarts and designs of characters. I mean, it's pretty crazy how people can look at a green blob ad turn it into a god-like being. It's crazy. Sad-ist makes wicked animations. Music is also a huge center of the fandom, with a few of the members being musicians, mainly wilbur soot. Derivakat is a youtuber who makes amazing songs based off of the smp. They are crazy good. The weirdest thing about the fandom is the writing. Sure, it's crazy how good the script is at times in the actual smp, but the fan writings are even crazier. Passerine is an amazingly written fanfiction. Based on people playing a block game. Passerine is actually better written than some published books i've read and its just out there on the internet for free. The fandom is crazy dedicated, and in some times its a bit too much, other times it just creates amazing outcomes.
also, i love these videos making fun of the fandom because it reminds me how crazy this all actually is lol.

I’m so glad that I watched the Dsmp in its early stages bc now I realised how complex it really was. Watching it unfold into once just a survival game with friends into a freaking war between nations, time travelling, nuclear bombs, Las Vegas Casino stuff and that’s just surface. And what’s even better is seeing fans making art, animations and theories around it.
I wished that people would stop hating on new stuff and ignore the stans bc those ppl just make us look bad :/ (I feel sorry for the newer ppl watching the smp)
Half Life VR but the AI is Self Aware is a similar series of friends having some fun with some "Lore", and it's like 500 times better. Mainly because they are legitimately entertaining people and aren't trying to appeal to a bunch of brain dead teenage girls.

@@idontknowhowtochangemyusername I'm not gonna lie, it's kinda sad how bad it's gotten in the fandom. I'ts gotten to a point where i just don't mention that im a dsmp fan. Im ashamed of the community. Or they r ped0s or some weird ass stans, only sum really small percentage of the fandom is actually safe and nice. I've met some really cool artists and just nice people in general but they're like 1% of the people i met in the dsmp fandom and the rest are just really shitty people. It wasn't always like this tho, when the dsmp started and there where only a few people who watched them it was so cool dude, like, u would go to youtube or twitter or even reditt and u could say ur opinon on random shit from the lore and noone would dox u or sum shit like that. I remenber talking with some dudes I met on a dsmp fans server on Discord. We've talked/played for 1/2 years now. They're awsome and that shows how not everyone in the dsmp fandom is awful. And honestly i don't even know how i've survived, but i try my best :D have a good night/day/evening!

Take me, for instance, I'm a MHA fan, people think I'm one of those toxic Bakusimps or something. Every fandom has it's good and bad sides. It's just the cringy part that gets more attention because people want something to complain about or someone to talk trash about. I hope things get better for you and your friends! 💙
