One thing I've done that has always been a big help for me throughout the years is: my main rotational abilities are 1-4. My big dps CD is tilde. 1-3 on my mouse are things outside my main rotation that I refresh a lot or things on a short CD that I use off CD. 4-6 on my mouse are cc's (kick, stuns, roots), 7-9 on the mouse are movement abilities like dash or disengage, and 10-12 are my big defensive CD's
Yeah I've had a very similar set up a while back when I still had a 12 button mouse as well! I've since downsized to a 65% keyboard and a Logitech Pro Superlight. Currently I have just about the lowest amount of available keys possible. I'm going to go back into this topic again soon to show that it's still possible to play the game with seemingly limited keybind space and how to go about it. As well as an incoming short on things people can do to practice and slowly move into adding more and more keybinds for themselves. 🙂
Please correct me if I'm reading this incorrectly, but did you say you can use keys 1-4 on your keyboard and have keys 1-4 on your mouse correspond to different actions? If so, which mouse are you using, or how do you accomplish this? I like the way you group your abilities using your mouse.
@@FitMagic I use a Razer Naga. I make all the side buttons on my mouse correspond to the numpad buttons. basically youd use the mouse software for the Razer Naga to make all your side buttons correspond to the numpad buttons of your choice. And then set your in game key binds to those numpad buttons. Like, when I hit mouse button 1 on the side of my mouse, it uses numpad 1. And 2 is numpad 2, etc.
@@lunar2328 To add on to this, there's also now a Razer naga trinity pro... so you get all the benefits of a Razer naga trinity while also being a wireless mouse! Although, if you like your mouse to be on the lighter side, the naga is notoriously a chunky boy, and on the hefty side for sure.

Just started WoW for the first time last month. Already got a level 70 monk and am working on my level 64 hunter now. I'm still having trouble with the key binds but I've been doing alot of research and have been slowly adjusting. Coming from OSRS to WoW was a huge change. Thanks for the video 🙏
Hopefully it was able to help out at least a little bit! I'm using my own advice working on keybinds for my new 65% keyboard playing a Rogue. Monk and Hunter I hear have quite a lot of binds to bind and press also, so I'd definitely recommend if you haven't already, find some macros to help free up some space for you :) Macros like heal friendly -> harm enemy style binds are really great on hybrid classes.
lol coming from osrs to wow. I feel ya man, i've been back and forth before. played runescape in early 2000s and then wow.. quit both came back to osrs on and off.. just recently came back to osrs and made an ironman, got to about 1700 total lvl and friends downloaded wow on my pc during family christmas party and bam, here I am SOD. trying to remember what I can't from my arena days on the BC and WOTLK Retail. Much funner than OSRS, though OSRS has it purpose.. I find WOW takes up much more time, I get sucked into it easier
the possibilities for hotkey combinations really opens up with the right macros. they can automate, simplify, and speed up certain tasks with things like stance switching, trinket/gear/item usage, self-casting and auto-targeting, etc. you mentioned this in the video but its also wise to keep specific types of abilities on the same keys if you play multiple classes. that way you are developing muscle memory instead of just memorizing.
Combining keybinds with mouse buttons opens up a lot of new combinations as well. I personally use the left and right mouse buttons alot. Mouse keybinds probably works best if you are a caster but that might just come down to personal preference. Even though Dragonflight came with a lot of improvements when it comes to keybinds it sometimes still falls short when you want to make keybinds with mouse buttons. To compensate for this I use the Clique addon which basically does what Blizzard is offering since the start of the expansion, but (still) slightly better. And yes, if you are an altaholic it's a good idea to put similar abilities on the same keybind. I'm currently in the process of streamlining all my characters and getting rid of separate addons for action bars (like Bartender). Ticking off that "Character Specific Keybinds" checkbox is scary at first, and it's quite a bit of work to fix UIs if you have always been using addons, but eventually the payoff will be worth it. A lot of classes and specs also have little tweaks where you can link a keybind to a macro (basically a little script) instead of directly to a spell. Such as the Ravager example in the video, you can make a macro where it is immediately dropped at the current position of your mouse pointer. This saves you a mouse click and with some practise this can improve your gameplay experience (and hopefully your DPS).
Agree entirely! Clicking abilities on your bars is more where I’d say I draw a line at. But only if you care to that level of optimization… end of the day it’s what’s most comfortable for you.
Even though I've used a mouse with a thumbpad for the past decade or so and so can just use the 'default' keybinds for the action bar, this video still gave me ideas for how to bind more stuff. That said, I think it went a bit understated here that you don't have to put *everything* on a keybind. Buffs like Battle Shout seem pretty safe as clickables, since they don't have to be used very regularly!
This is very true! a 30min buff akin to the older class buffs that have since been removed in favor of passives. Fully agree, there's definitely no requirement to buffing things like Battle shout or something like poison's on a Rogue for sure :)
Yup, I've had this idea come up as well! harder for people with hands on the smaller side... makes hitting shift and ctrl that much harder. But otherwise a great option for those it does work for!
There was someone else in a previous comment who I provided some more in depth tips to about working your way into getting into keybinds! 🙂 I’ll also make a video about it soon, unfortunately after uploading I got sick and then my keyboard broke… new one recently just came in though!
I know that your comment was made over a month ago so by now you probably found a method that works for you, but just in case I’m going to make a suggestion. I’ve never been efficient with a keyboard in the least bit and my wife wanted to go back to playing World of Warcraft Which didn’t sound too bad at first but once I started playing and had nearly 20 abilities to work with I was getting extremely flustered. I recently purchased a logitech G 600 off of Amazon for $35 and it’s been the best investment I could’ve made. I have a handful of frequently used commands that are key bound close to my movement keys, but the vast majority of my key binds are on my mouse, so it makes it where I am mostly using my left hand for movement. Another thing that I might suggest, that I don’t believe was mentioned in this video is that I changed the W and D keys from turning to strafing which allowed me to free up two more keys very close by while using the mouse to turn. Hopefully these small suggestions will be of assistance.
Subbed! I gotta convert to keybinds 100% . I use Logitech G203 lightsync mouse w/ 2 buttons on left and one on top behind wheel. Also an Apple keyboard for my Mac so 'cntrl' is hard to reach w/ smaller hands. Do you advise using my 2 mouse side buttons for 'shift' and 'ctrl' conditionals? It's hard to get stuff for Mac in SE Asia where I live but some are possible.
Hey I appreciate it! (working on some Hardcore classic wow content now 🙂) - as far as using the buttons on your mouse as modifiers... ULTIMATELY that's for you to determine if it's comfortable or not. Personally, I try and use shift as my primary modifier and then Ctrl for anything I need to be very deliberate about hitting. But if separating your modifiers to be accessed only by your other hand is what ends up being most convenient or comfortable for you, then I'd say go for it! I hope this helps!
Glad you're making an entry guide for new players. Anything similar in the works for new players in Dragonflight in general (starter guide or something)?
@@Nightwatertv Well I'm starting to slowly find my way but have been lost ever since I hit 70. It'd be neat for a guide to mention what things to keep in mind while leveling maybe? importance of learning to interrupt spells from the get go so you arnt trying to learn it later when you start doing content; taking 5 min to look up the basics of a spec - general rotation things, etc goes a long way towards building a good foundation vs yolo'ing it and having a bad time and building bad habits

That way you have 15 abilities in your mouse. Then you can go ahead and add things like mounts, consumes, not too readily needed abilities to Q, E, R, F etc etc. Ez. This way, you can even play one handed while using 5 abilities
Yeah I had gone from using a Naga many years ago, do downsizing the amount of buttons available on my mouse. Having tried relying on my mouse for a good chunk of abilities, and then shifting back to keyboard being the primary source, I’ve found that my current set up is the most comfortable for me. Nothing weird about a preference! Whatever is most comfortable for you is ultimately going to be the best choice overall. There is by no means an objectively "CORRECT" answer when it comes to keybinds outside of comfort.

Ultimately it's all about whatever's most comfortable for you! Totally fine, no pressure at all! :) But, if you're ever looking to add any keybinds into your rotation, I'd recommend just slowly incorporating abilities onto your keyboard by order of commonly pressed to less commonly pressed abilities to help with both making sure they are comfortable binds for your hands, and just generally helping build up muscle memory. Or if you're like me, I like to go with the full dive sink or swim approach and force myself to go all in straight away and adjust from there.

Mouse in the pictures is apparently the Logitech M650, but the image was from a royalty free website, so it's not the one I use. It does look similar to my Logitech Superlight though, which I can't recommend enough!
Yeah that is pretty wild, agreed! At the end of the day it's definitely all about comfort and what works best for you. However, I do believe that anyone who clicks and has no limitations preventing them from utilizing keybinds will overall gain higher APM and reaction times especially in the later expansions. I think this has a lesser effect in something like Classic Era where everything is more about preparation than reactions though... although arguments could be made about Hardcore.
My average parse is 93.4 and i am a clicker. Razor mouse with a turbo click. Got like 5 bosses in wrath classic I have 99 parses. 436th place on sappiron. All with 10-15 guildies and rest pugs.
Hell yeah man, that's great! Absolutely clicking can work for some people, and It's cool to hear about someone who it does work for. I personally still believe that keybinds are overall a superior option, but nothing beats what you're comfortable with.
@@Nightwatertv Keybinds are better for melee and any fights you have to move around a lot and still cast. If i can stand still my rotation will be flawless lol. Id go as far as saying casters are the only thing a clicker can be top at. And not in pvp. Normally end up at 1600-1750 rated as clicker only because im really good at dps.
Yeah you can get away with doing that in classic wow because the game is brain dead easy. Barely any mechanics and most classes are 3 button rotations. On retail on the other hand... clicking is pretty hard in mythic content.
@@KronicKillin Yeah in retail, there's a majority of the content where you need to move and avoid hits, and in the higher tier content, you'll get 1shot if you don't. I'd say if you're trying to keep up and complete the highest tier content in retail, keybinds are going to be just about required.
Sounds like you have everything perfectly set up and good to go then! Some people don't, which can cause misclicks... also sometimes in the higher stress situations I'm certain there are some individuals that have decreased accuracy in hitting which ability they meant to in the moment. Glad to hear you have a great set up that works very well at mitigating this issue for yourself!... or you've become great at the good ole "Meant to do that", but either way is perfectly acceptable if it works for you personally.

The goal of the video was to leave a new player with the thought processes of binding for themselves without specifying exactly which keys to use and for what. But you do bring up a good point!
Only thing worse than someone who clicks! Disgusting. /s Yeah, you could absolutely do that, if that’s what your preference is. But I however am here to aide people wanting to move away from other means of controls wanting to get into using mouse and keyboard keybinds.
@@streetrat160 Yeah I ultimately have no opinion on how people play WoW and with what means of controls. Everything boils down to comfort with the form factor. @@Nightwatertv I played the traditional WASD Set up forever. But it really is just not very ergonomic. I do the keybinds like so I dont have to reach or find a key. Made my PvP, and PvE game play 10x better.
@@Nightwatertv wait. Do you mean the reckful thats... ummm... rip? I just connected the dots..
@@donkzilla2293I do, yeah super sad, he was a huge inspiration for me. rest in peace indeed.
But he had very strange keybinds that came from growing up playing asheron's call. X and C being strafe, I believe... Z and a mouse button were used for toggling auto run, while the rest of his keyboard was made up of different abilities.

the biggest hint I can give you, bind two most spammable skills of you on mouse wheel up/down, thank me later warriors. also get razer naga
I especially agree with the razer naga statement. Especially now that they have a solid wireless option.
Just... probably turn off the RGB lights if you want the battery life to last a bit longer! 😅
Haha ctrl space bar is my mount too 😂
BIS Bind for mount tbh. 😌
Off topic but what mouse is that you have in the thumbnail
Mouse in the pictures is apparently the Logitech M650, but the image was from a royalty free website, so it's not the one I use.
It does look similar to my Logitech Superlight though, which I can't recommend enough!
@@Nightwatertv awesome thanks for reply :)
@@acphantom6437 No problem at all!
its funny because some Rank 1 players click alot of their abilities.
Yeah that is pretty wild, agreed!
At the end of the day it's definitely all about comfort and what works best for you.
However, I do believe that anyone who clicks and has no limitations preventing them from utilizing keybinds will overall gain higher APM and reaction times especially in the later expansions. I think this has a lesser effect in something like Classic Era where everything is more about preparation than reactions though... although arguments could be made about Hardcore.
im friends with a Rank 1 rouge and he clicks over half his abilities lmao@@Nightwatertv
@@Zesmas that's dope!
I'd say if you're trying to keep up and complete the highest tier content in retail, keybinds are going to be just about required.
yeah sure buddy LOLLL
how do you hit an ability accidentally like that shouldn't happen at all maybe 3 times in a life time
Sounds like you have everything perfectly set up and good to go then!
Let me guess, you have never thrown your entire PC across the room either?
C'mon man, live a little! :)
@@TheSaltyAdmiral It's already very clear that their mental is impervious and they can make no mistakes.
Me however... not perfect, mistypes happen!
I'm a pro click to move *pvp*
You’re the best, buddy. Glad you found your way.
Naw bro , thank you for the awesome guide . Been playing wow since burning crusade and quit in cata came back to dragon flight . Realized I need to fix my play style and came a cross this guide .ty for taking your time with editing and work for the wow community
@@baovu3663 Hey no problem! Glad it helped out.
Working on finding the time to get back into the swing of things and get to work on making more gaming content.
appreciating the time and effort but how is this a keybind video that doesnt start with; "move your wasd to esdf" ?
overall good tips though
Yeah I never got into utilizing this strategy, I’ve tested it but wasn’t for me. Honestly a fantastic idea though.
The goal of the video was to leave a new player with the thought processes of binding for themselves without specifying exactly which keys to use and for what. But you do bring up a good point!
ive never heard of esdf man you trippin. you want WASD so that your pinky can quickly hit the modifier keys.
imagine using anything other than 123456 Shift+123456.
you're right, what were we all thinking?? rebinding now. o7
Or just buy a controller.
Only thing worse than someone who clicks! Disgusting. /s
Yeah, you could absolutely do that, if that’s what your preference is. But I however am here to aide people wanting to move away from other means of controls wanting to get into using mouse and keyboard keybinds.
@@Nightwatertv ease of access an a dominate way to play wow is on controller now. Much to the pc crowds displeasure.
@@streetrat160 Yeah I ultimately have no opinion on how people play WoW and with what means of controls. Everything boils down to comfort with the form factor.
Comfort in playing a game the way you want to is the most important thing in any game, and in my opinion should always be the way anyone should ever view it.
Nice 8 minute intro, I think you forgot to mention keybinds
This video was not made with the intention of telling you that you which abilities specifically to put on which keys. It was made with the intention of helping new players learn how to bind for themselves.
Sorry that this wasn’t the video for you! Maybe some of the future videos will be more up your alley.
@@Nightwatertv well hey--you gave a sincere and high vibrational reply so I see the light now. You did well completely judoing my excellent one shot troll. Touche
