  • Installing a bathroom lock is the next thing on your DIY list but you’re not sure how to start. The job is neither difficult nor time consuming and even if you don’t have much experience it shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours. Cutting the hole for the mechanism seems like the most daunting task but it’s relatively easy as long as you have the proper tools and a bit of patience. The most effective way is to drill a few holes in the edge of the door first and then use the chisel to create enough space to house the lock.
So if you’re tired of being interrupted don’t procrastinate forever. Watch my step-by-step tutorial to see how to successfully prepare the door and fit the bathroom lock to get back your privacy.

It's amazing how many locksmiths cock up lock installs on doors by simply either rushing or not putting enough effort in your video was very informative and showed the exact correct way

This video gave me the confidence to have a go myself....took me four hours lol, mainly due to being inexperienced with a chisel and hoovering up the dust, but the result was fantastic, if I say so myself! Thanks a lot for taking the time to show how to do this, I'm very grateful.

Proper Job, as we say in Cornwall, thank you so much. I have 2 bathroom and 7 regular door handles and latches/locks arriving shortly. I’ve bought my chisels and mallet; just needed your video. Thanks again! 🔨🍾❤️ (couldn’t find a chisel icon 😂)

That's a great video on how to convert a standard handle set to a full mortice lockset -- However worth noting -- it's far easier, quicker and zero chance of making a mistake if you just use a Privacy Lever Latch instead, which uses the same holes but has a snib/pin on the inside handle rather than seperate from the handle like your video. There's no real advantage with the old style mortice lock, unless you wanted to make it key-lockable.

All I would say as a carpenter, always chisel the outer edge first to prevent a miss strike with the chisel causing it to break out other than that it’s good

I always find that if I do the outer edge with a Stanley knife whether I’m doing locks or hinges. It makes for a really clean edge and finish.

Excellent video thanks. I am changing my bathroom tubular locks for sash locks same as you have here. Everything went fine, thanks mainly to your video it has to be said, but now I have a problem. I put the lock in to the frame and checked that the latch and deadbolts moved freely which they did, but as soon as I fitted the handles the deadbolt became really stiff to turn. I thought it might be because I hadn't fitted the lock square but I have put a square against the spindle and it seems ok. I would be grateful for any advice.

That blue pin u inserted to turn the Latch in the other direction, does it usually come in pack. As mines did not and now that i spun the latch around like you did, its caused it to be loose, what is the fix?

    • @k-nemo

I had the blue pin in the set. If you don't have it try to use a screwdriver instead
