I'm someone who isn't handy with DIY but my bedroom door handle needs replacing as it's loose like the first one, so entering my room sometimes requires a little more force. Whilst it's probably one of the easiest jobs to do, I really appreciate this video and you showing the job done but also when the job hits a bump on the way, and how you resolved it.
The problem is the door handles in my house are huge so I will probably have no choice but to use smaller ones however he said it’s to avoid paint marks. If you plan on painting the door afterwards I guess it wouldn’t really matter
Please can you tell me what the grub screws do? Our living room door has this handle on it (rented house) Rather than create a job for the landlord I'd like to sort out a problem with the handle myself. The grub screws fell out one, and then a couple of mi ths later, the other. Now the latch doesn't go all the way in, unless we pull the handle down HARD and forcibly pull open the door. It's annoying, especially as we're trying to keep a cat from going upstairs and the kids understandably would rather leave the door open than fight with it, each time they come in or out. Do you think if I put grub screws in, it would fix the problem? Or do I need to dig out a bit of the door frame, even though it didn't seem to have s problem before?
@@groovy7686 😂😂💦. Now you DO know that was far too easy. And also, be careful, you know what they say about people who talk about sex all the time.😳😳😮😮🙆🏻🤷🏼♀️
Thank you for the video. I just changed a door handle I’ve been putting off doing for ages. Also used your Phillips head screw trick to make the pilot hole for the flat head screw provided - worked a treat. Subscribed. 🙂
Thanks for the tips our sons bedroom handle is really tight and also does the sticking you had so I'll change the handle and probably try the bit in the door frame too. Itd be great to manage this myself.
Thanks so much, very clear advice and instructions, i have the exact same handles as your old ones and was going to replace them but for the time being i'm now going to find my chisel! :-)
Nice one aaanton11 I had exactly the same issue with mechanism not opening enough. I found out that the reason was the space in between the funny shaped washer inside the handle did not have enough gap between its two raised points to let the handle go down enough. I ended up buying a new internal rather than just simply chop out a little of the frame. D'oh!! I'll know next time.
I’ve made the mistake of slipping of the screw and scratching my new handle, also a screw snapped when I tried to undo the old one. Cowboys who build these new builds lol
I just bought 50 quids worth of handles. Then I needed new latches. Then they wasn’t in line with the hole so I bought a router. So took them off hinges and they fire doors weigh a tonne. Now I’ve realised there’s no screws with the handles What a frigging nightmare. I’m gonna stop coming up with silly ideas.
Love the story, I have loads of them, its like opening a can of worms, the problems you have to overcome, but its a great feeling when. it all comes together, Thanks Judd for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank's I thought it would be Five minute job, but replacement part was very slightly different, & now latch tongue won't latch in, & door keeps coming open.
it will stiffen everything up and save wear on the handles, also if you use the handle to pull the door closed it transfers the load to the opposite side, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 when I replaced mine one of the handle's grub screw seemed to fall out - what can I do? Can I buy a replacement screw easily and do I need to take the handle off and just pop it in?

Hi mate, I have a Victorian door with a normal door handle. But I want to change it to. A lock door. I have the handle. But what is the best way to go about doing it?
I put a door handle on once and I put it the wrong way around and the end of the handles were pointing to the edge of the door, notice I said once, never done it again thank God…😂😂😂
I'm having problems with one of my handles, it hasn't gone floppy but when I pull it down to open the door the latch doesn't retract properly. It goes in if I push it in but not with the handle. I was afraid someone would get stuck and not be able to open the door, so for the moment I've swapped the internal bits with another one off a door we don't shut. Is the internal barrel bit sold separately and what is it called please, so that I can go and buy a new part.
@@aaanton11 Thanks so much for your reply. Been busy since last night and found out I need a mortice latch. I swopped a bedroom door latch, which we never close, with the bathroom door latch. I've jst typed in how to replace door handle and i clicked onto your video, i bought new handles no probs fitted it all goin great, but my problem is actually the middle peice (the bit where once handle goes down it should click into the hole that's in the frame) well my prob is that part, it moves when I pull handle down but very quickly shoots back out befor ive even got the door shut can anyone help me please 😢😢😢
Just a quick question but I’ve is your handle not bit high because I’ve just fitted a new door for the first time and my handle will end up on the door higher than the centre or the frame of the door
you will want to line up the handle and catch with the latch in the door frame, or make it the same height as all the other handles in the house, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
aaanton11 mines a hollow door from B&Q,,I just wasn’t sure if my door is strong enough to put the handle above the centre panel of the door is,,mine will be like yours just above the centre bit of the door

How come you didn't change the latch at the same time I went and bought these handles after watching your video and found the latch is too short compared to my old ones
You have taken the handles off you might aswell fit new latches while your at it. Not only do they look clean and new. Work and last longer . And only cost couple pound each.
Ok I have those brass door handles. I’ve undone the face plates but the handles are joined to each other by the bar in the middle and there is no obvious hole to release them. I can’t get them off. Any ideas anyone?

They are actually brass rather than gold.
The Georgian Scroll door handles(brass or silver) have a braid pattern round the edge. You had the Victorian Scroll handles.
The bar that goes through the handles is called the spindle bar.
