I like how all the characters have bad parents and generational trauma in some way. Because it really kinda takes bojack’s “my parents did this to me and it’s not my fault” and tosses it out the window.

Too often, shows romanticize the trauma a woman can go through, setting them up to be saved. In this show, PC takes her traumas as motivation to overcome, all while being unapologetically herself, and in the end, it all works out for her. I love this show.

Not just women, trauma is often trivialized in general. But since so many of us are messed up, I wonder if romanticism of trauma is often the writers crying for help. Just speculation.

Mad props to the writers for committing to PC's fertility issues. I lost count of how many times I've seen a woman either struggle to conceive or is outright told they can't, have a child through other means, only to reveal after they have the kid and at the most uplifting moment that they're pregnant against all odds in sitcoms. PC adopted Ruthie, had her new parent struggles, and ends the series content with things. There's no cop-out that she's able to carry a baby to full term because she found "the right guy" in Judah.

Personally, I'm a gay feminist so PC is one of my favorite characters on the show because we love to see a queen winning, but also the painful lessons that allow for her growth as a person.

While never stated Judah is heavily autistic coded.
If this was the creators intentions I find that interesting that Judah and princess Carolyn got together since a lot of autistic people tend to feel more relatable to cats and have a tendency to choose them over dogs.

I find it impressive that not once does she shout or act annoyed around Ruthie even though she was overworked and clearly didn't have time to look after her 24/7 but she found a way around it because she knew adopting Ruthie was her choice and she deserves a good childhood unlike her own. She truly proved to be a good mother. Also a lot of people think Diane is the soul of the show, but PC wins that title for me.

But I'm going off topic, Princess Carolyn has got to be one of my favorite characters in BoJack Horseman because out of all the characters of the show, she had the most growth and got her happy ending at the end of the series. She's the one I related to most (minus wanting to be a mother). She kept getting pulled back I to the muck for someone she loved (bojack) who didn't give her anything in return. Finally realizes it and for probably the 100th time pulls herself out of the muck. She is a fighter and truly cares about people around her even if she doesn't always make the best decisions

  • @suruthebeast4065

This ties so well into the over arching theme of the show being Generational Trauma. Granted we don't see her grandma or the 'old' country but PCs life is a stark contrast to the life of Beatrice Horseman. Who DID have the child of passion, who DID get stuck in a life outside of her choice, and DID wind up being forced into situation after situation outside of her control.
PC we get the chance to see the other side of things, instead of a hell constructed out of miss opportunity and happenstance we get to see one built out of personal choices. Granted yes Bea could have made choices to avoid her situation she didn't, she stuck to the path guided by her trauma while PC doesn't. The only choice really made FOR Carolynn was the miscarriages, every other branch in her life she picked. She chose to move to LA, she chose to stick around for Bojack, she chose to become an agent then a manager, she chose to create a company on her own BUT she also chose to live her best life and fight and scrape till she eventually came out on top with a loving partner in Juda, a happy baby girl in Rosie, and a collection of wonderful friends surrounding her.
I see Beatrice and Carolynn as two sides of the same coin. One side the person gave up and submitted to the horrible situations they were forced into while the other fought back. Carolynn never gave up for too long and her small stints of giving up were countered by her keeping of good company. Todd, Juda, Diane, these are all people who want to see Carolynn and all their other friends succeed and will help as much as they can. Carolynn made all the right choices while Beatrice (what few choices she had) made the wrong ones.
NOTE: Because I feel it will come up, I know Beatrice had very few choices as she was subject to society and such but the choices she did make were key choices. NO ONE told her to keep Bojack, she chose to do so out of her own insecurities. NO ONE told her to force Henrietta to abaondon Hollyhock. No one told her to drug Holly, no one told her enable Butterscotches behavior. The only thing she was 'told' to do and did was never to love anyone like Crackerjack and this was still a choice as she wasn't forced to do it, she chose to listen to her mothers poor advice. Beatrice was so broken by her trauma that she had given up and just accepted whatever may come. She lived a reactive life not a proactive one like Carolynn does.

    Stray observation:
It's funny to me thinking about how the last few episodes of Bojack take place in 2020 and 2021 on account of, well...
Because if one wanted to, they could say that those last few episodes did not happen. You could speculate about what likely would've happened in a mid pandemic Hollywoo.
Maybe the journalists' trail went cold when everyone was forced to quarantine and social distance. Maybe they never get in contact with the Carsons. Maybe everything goes pretty much the same, just via the internet, but since Todd, PC, and Diane aren't nearby when BJ gets the call from Charlotte, they're unable to set up the Biscuits Braxby interview in a timely manner. Maybe the interview happens over Zoom. Maybe since Bojack's stuck in Connecticut, he can't spiral the same way he did. Maybe he catches the virus in Prison.
Not to mention Todd probably loses his job (but he's able to bounce back with some new wacky idea). PC and Judah's romance gets stalled as they have to isolate from each other and PC's able to give Ruthie total attention. Diane's story doesn't change much other than her signing events have to go virtual.
Like, it's silly to think about because the staff had no way of knowing, but I do wonder what that alternate version would look like.
