- Helen Gallagher performs "You're Gonna Dance With Me, Willie" from the musical 'Hazel Flagg," joined by the cast headed by John Brascia, in this 1953 TV appearance.
What a wonderful, talented, charismatic, disciplined artist! And to think, she is such a humble lady and a mentor, teacher and cheerleader for young talent to this day!
Well, HAZEL FLAGG didn't run very long on Broadway - but this number makes the show seem like a total hit!
Thank you, Alan!
I love this!
very energetic!
You are an ANGEL!!!!!🙏
Mave Ryan look how young she was
I absolutely adore Helen. Miss being in her home and classes very much.
Wow now that some good dancing
Wow, that was a really great number!
Gotta be Robert Alton. Very last days of that kind of chorus dancing. Phenomenal.
If you are a Helen fan, as I am, you must watch: Live From the Lambs Helen Gallagher 2 4 19, on UA-cam.
The great Helen Gallagher (still with us, BTW, at least at this writing) was miscast as Hazel Flagg; the part called for Carol Channing or Judy Holliday. So the star-making thing didn't happen. But as you can see here, there was never a show she was in where she didn't knock 'em dead.
My understanding was that Hazel Flagg was written for Helen. It was her vehicle. Why was she miscast? Am I wrong about this?
Helen comes closer to Carole Lombard than Carol Channing or Judy Holliday, and was probably a more established musical comedy performer at the time. She's far more passable as a small-town Vermont girl; Channing and Holliday wouldn't fit that bill at all.
@hanschristianbrando5588, Helen is not just "with us", she's still teaching acting classes at HB Studio in NYC and coming up on her 80th year in the biz at age 97. Yowza! Fantastic performer and a perfect example of a 'trouper'!
Great number! Indeed the show "Hazel Flagg" didn't run long, but... there was a breakout star: dancer Sheree North. After winning a Theatre World award for her performance, North ended up performing this very number with Jerry Lewis in the 1954 film version of "Hazel Flagg/Nothing Sacred". Signed to 20th Century Fox and groomed as the next blonde bombshell principally as an attempt to keep Marilyn Monroe in line with the threat of replacement. Ironically, North proved to be quite talented and went on to have a long career as a character actress.
What an amazing document! Helen is dynamite!!!
Where is this from? Is this tv version or a single performance for a tv show?
That’s Johnny from White Christmas! Now this is good choreography. Not like the mod pop and lock boring stuff you see today. I guess a product of it’s time when folks actually couple danced regularly.
She was very charming. A shame the book was so weak.
