- Dr. Borgman is a scientist who has created a manfish, a fish that resembles an amphibious human. He then converts it to full human size. His goal is to create an army of these things and conquer whatever he wants. He uses directed pain to control them, as well as anyone else he wants to turn into a slave. Including an admiral on the Seaview.

I read a comment last week that Richard Basehart was beginning to have a health issue that limited his filming, and made him miss a few episodes. Thank you for my weekly dose of Voyage.
I'll always remember Victor Lundin as "Friday" on "Robinson Crusoe On Mars", and how he wasn't happy playing the lobster man on VTTBOTS, but as he said, "Work is work". John Dehner was always a lot of fun, and in hundreds of different characters. He was in a couple of different Twilight Zones, the "Wild Wild West", and on and on. He was even an assistant animator for Walt Disney from 1940 to 1941. Fascinating biography.
Basehart was still out sick. I think he'll be missing in the next episode also. This episode creeps me out more than most because of Borgman. Smooth. Cold. Doesn't give a damn. Scary guy, GREAT actor.

Richard Basehart was hospitalized, i read. The previous episode he was only in about half episode, the guy with thick bandaged in the sickbay wasn't him.
Richard Basehart became ill during the filming of Monsters web and missed the next two episodes. He returned for the filming of the Return of the Phantom.
I've long wondered if the classic 'Creature From The Black Lagoon' film was any influence on this episode. It was a pretty wild romp, even for this show. Victor Lundin (Hansjurg) wanted to be even more dramatic doing Hansjorg's showdown with Borgman but Irwin Allen reminded him they weren't doing Playhouse 90. Lundin would return in Season 4 for possibly the most infamous guest star role of the series as "The Lobster Man". Also, I'd read that Basehart missed this, part of the prior episode and the following one due to a bleeding ulcer. He was well enough to return for the last episode of this season, however.
Creepy stuff, I think the manfish costume was used to depict the alien from the A Change of Space episode of Lost in Space with Jonathan Harris hamming it up as an ancient version of Dr Smith( great fun).
This was a delight! Your narration, Dehner's wonderful performance and the delicious mad scientist tale! (I kept expecting Svengoolie to break in with a comment!)
"I'd rather do it myself!" LOL!!! (Elizabeth Montgomery quotes the line to Agnes Moorehead in an episode of "Bewitched."

Cool too see the original use of the Manfish suit, which later appeared in season 1 episode 28 of Lost In Space
Voyage is usually described as a monster of the week show. It's more of a mad scientist of the week show. Too bad the mad scientists don't know enough science to determine the proper depth of their experiments.
All those years ago, I actually thought it was the same costume as the Creature From The Black Lagoon.
i once read and i think it was on imdb but its not on now that richard basehart was unwell at the time the menfish episode was filmed.....i cannot remember what condition he had though
