Thank you so much for posting this. This was a life saver. Literally! No car service guy (btw, we went and asked 5 centers and all said they can't do it, this is in Seoul) would be willing to change ours and my husband had to have it fixed as we had to get cleared for an annual govt car check. The car is like 12 years old so it's hard to find centers that are still upto date on servicing these models especially Japanese cars in a predominantly Korean car country. Then, I just tried to check on UA-cam if someone had posted something of this sort and I came across your post. And literally, I was the one who nudge the bulb casing. The last car center guy we went to I think was shocked to see that I was the one trying to remove it. All he did was replaced the bulb. Technically, I did all the dirty work, and also because I have slimmer fingers so it could fit right in. In the end, he told my husband how lucky he was to have me as his wife. Yeah right, I should be paid for my services and thanks to you. You should take all the credit too for posting this step by step on how to video. Thanks again and keep posting informative and helpful guide or tips on how to do. Will definitely subscribe to your channel. It's the least that I can do. 🙂

Thanks for posting this, as a lot of folk have said, my 2011 CRV housing needs to be pushed gently to the right, then wiggle (be patient) and it eventually comes out, replace bulb as video then wiggle back in and finally push to the left and you get a satisfying click when it goes in..!

DO NOT PULL STRAIGHT BACK. The cover should be pushed to the right (passenger side) then pulled back. This releases the retainer clip. Thank you for making these videos, they are helpful. Please update this one. 😁

Jon, THANK YOU for this added post. After 20 minutes of no luck reading your comment helped. For my 2009 CRV, after pushing to the right, inserting a tiny screwdriver (on the left)as a wedge helped in the process.

Yup! Exactly right. I have an ‘09 but mine only has one license plate bulb, works for me, have a hell of a time getting my fat hands in there anyway! 🤷‍♂️

Agreed. I Snapped left tab before reading this in comments. Used a prying tool to help pull it ‘straight back’. Debating on what use to weatherproof it now.
I believe I was partly fooled by the easy snap out dome lights when I was replacing those bulbs just prior to the license plate light.

They don't pull off to rear, to do it right (and easier, with less chance of breaking retaining tab) push the fitting to the right, then they pop off themselves. One side is a tab, one side is a plastic spring clip. Still fiddly though.

What do you mean when you said pull it backwards I don’t understand what you’re meaning I’m looking to replace my bulb but I don’t know what you mean do you pull it out or do you push it in together and push toward the right I’m a little confused

In my changing the license plate light bulb in our 2014 CR-V, this is what I did:
Slide the lens cover to the right (same for the bulbs on both sides--not mirror image). The cover has an integral spring to push it to the left.
While holding it to the right, pop the left side away from the frame. There are two tabs on the left that need to clear the car frame to pop out.
Let the spring push it back to the left, ensuring the left side remains popped out.
You can now remove the unit. It is very frustrating to do so. You'll have to reorient it in the space until it is sideways, like in the video, to remove it.
Press the lens cover latch on the left side of the lens cover to release the bulb housing.
Remove the bulb and replace it. Test it by turning on the parker lights. You don't need to start the car to do so.
Snap the lens cover back on. You will be able to see the latch clip back in place.
Finagle the unit back into the space and get it oriented in the proper way.
Align it in its normal position (or perhaps a bit to the left of normal) and put the right side in.
Push to the right, and then push the left side in. There are two tabs on the left that have to slide under the frame to secure it.
Let the spring push the unit back to the left and it is complete. Test to make sure it still works.
Note that the car used in the video can't be a 2009 CR-V, unless it has an aftermarket backup camera. Backup cameras were added for the 2012 model at the earliest. We have both a 2011 and a 2014 CR-V, and only the 2014 has the backup camera.

My CRV is a 2008 and has a back up camera. It doesn’t look to be after market as it has the original Honda navigation system in the center with the outdated year and time showing. But thanks for the helpful tips!

One question...why did u fit yellow ones ?? They r one hell of a fiddly job to remove... Push sideways onto the side that gives a bit....Very fiddly to actually get the fitting released from the car body as well, in fact on my CRV it actually couldnt be done without bending the outer plastic trim a bit... Confirmed type of bulb..got the LED ones on order now..

Just did this on a 2010 CR-v exl which has only one light bulb. Push first to the left (towards driver seat) then when unclipped then to the right. Putting it back u must put the left side in first then push down right.

Does the 2012 CRV need can-bus license plate bulbs for led or without can-bus will it show error code on dash or bulb out warning.

    1) that trim panel that's in the way comes off with 2 8mm bolts pm both ends and a couple of friction clips (pull hard from the center)
    2) you want to stick a flat screwdriver under the right side of the lense body and push the retaining clip in to release it, then tilt to the left and remove it so you don't break the housing like this video will tell you.

For Honda 2007, you push to the right, then pull out. Just pulling out is wrong.

  • @phoneme52xxx6

Yeah. You need to push the housing from left to right then pull it down. The problem is that it’s such a tight fit that it takes ages to wiggle it back into place. Honda cars are designed to have the correct bulbs fitted for a reason. You mess with these at your peril. Always better to stick with the correct parts even if they are after market. These super bright LEDS are not designed for a CRV. In addition, do you really want your licence plate lit up like a Christmas tree???

.......Yeah no! You made it look easy but it's not😒 honda makes things so difficult just like a normal 5 min battery replacement it takes 15mins, or a simple lightbulb it takes 4ever especially the driver side.
