    I like to do what I call "EQ based compression" before adding the compressor. Some frequencies have higher peaks in terms of actual peaking and some in terms of perceived peaking, which is based on the idea of the Fletcher-Munson curve. Basically the human ear hears certain frequencies louder than others. You can test this using a sine wave generator and sweeping through the spectrum.
    Knowing and having tested this, I've found those certain frequencies and came up with a way to cut/boost the EQ to prime the compressor so that it doesnt have to work as hard to balance the sound. This allows for less compression, which means more dynamic expression, and a more realistic sounding bass on a recording. Sounds great live too!
    Try this: 60hz@0db with a high shelf roll off below 60, 120hz@+3db, 250hz@-3db, 500hz@0db, 1k@-3db, 2-3k@+3db, 4-6k@0db and a low shelf roll off above that and parabolic curves in between each frequency. If you were to look at it on a 32 band graphic EQ, it would kinda look like a Batman symbol.

      I tried it and it works nicely with my Ibanez SR650E, which is quite lively and rich across the spectrum. I used my Dunlop MXR 10-band EQ to try your suggested setting. It gives a nice warm tone without being dead. I found out however that the setting improves if I don't roll-off frequencies above 6K but leave them at 0Db instead.
      In all, by playing around with the EQ the fundamental tone character of the bass is shaped with 60, 120 and 250 Hz. The relationship among these 3 frequencies is what creates the basic tonal character of the bass. 500Hz is important too but usually it sounds better if slightly cut. The rest need to be correctly adjusted of course in order to round-up the setting instead of destroying it but they are more like the finishing touches rather than the base work.

    I LOVE the Multicomp. For me is the best bass compressor, used it for almost 5 years.

    I use compressor cause I like the “pumping and pushing” sound it produces, apart from leveling out my sound. It also works great with overdrives, not so much with fuzz pedals (for me). Thanks for all your videos, there’s a lot about them to like!

    love this pedal, i've been using the first gen since 2008, it's the only pedal that has been on all of my different pedalboards throughout these years.

    I have the first version of this pedal. Still use it since 10 or more years. Awesome comp 👍🏻

    I have a very percussive finger style, I drive the strings down onto the fretboard, driving my fingers through the strings. There is s very loud audible clack as the string contacts the fretboard before the fingers release the string and the notes ring out. Kind of similar to Steve Harris mixed with John Entwistle, but also like neither. My sound I guess, anyway the compressor takes a little aggressiveness out and prevents it from dominating the overall sound but it still has real presence. I use an EBS multicomp, I find it superb and easy to use.

    Thanks, this is a much more comprehensive and convincing demo of the EBS pedal than in the Thomann shootout video.

    How do I say this? Great, simple, but effective way to explain how to know if you need, or want compression! That EBS pedal sounds like a winner to me!

    I use this pedal (compression) because I play mostly with grit in a loud band. When I need a fully clean tone my Aguilar Super Singles on my Ibanez do not cut through the mix enough. With compression it is a lot closer to the overdriven sound.

    I personally use compression for tapping on my 5 & 6 strings. It evens out the harmonics and prevents unnecessary excessive noise or hum that might happen accidentally from being to obvious while giving your lower tapped notes some clarity 😉

    • @Redwan_Shishko
      @Redwan_Shishko 2 роки тому

      @@Potarnul absolutely! The B string cuts through the mix, especially if you add the appropriate amount of gain/drive while running a decent EQ to filter out the muddy frequencies. I am tuned to D standard btw, aka low A bottom end 😁

    Hello, thank you very much for the video! It sounds like in the factory setting multi band mode that this pedal will compress the lows and free up the highs. It sounds like this is exactly what I'm looking for. I have a Big Muff Bass Deluxe pedal which you can split the signal with clean lows and distorted highs. I would like to compress the clean low while leaving the high end more dynamic. Just wondering if I would be on the right track with this ebs compressor??

    So the function of the Sens. knob was always there. Also in the earlier versions of the EBS multicomp? It was only a trim knob inside of the earlier models, right?

    Otra razón es ocupar todo el "campo"en la mezcla , que se traduce en ruido por saturación, si el bajo , en especial en slap, satura el vumetro en el master , va a obligar al ingeniero de sonido a bajarle el volumen, aqui la utilidad del compresor, que actua como un control de volumen automatico

      It is not a noisy pedal, and this newer version is even more quiet than the previous 2 knob classic multicomp. Dont hesitate to pull the trigger on this pedal, its a real keeper.

      Basically the amount of control you have over it and the quality of the components, it's a different sounding compression.

    • @EvilBlakey
      @EvilBlakey 4 роки тому +2

      Built-in compressors are typically of a lot lower quality, and often only have one knob. I've heard it said that manufacturers put one in the amp just so they can jack up the price because "it has more features".

      a compressor evens out the volume between the loud and soft notes.

    • @Toastrodamus
      @Toastrodamus 4 роки тому

      It squashes the dynamic range of the sound - so if you are using a 4:1 compression ratio (pretty typical for bass) you are taking what might be a jump of 16 dB between loud sounds and quiet sounds and making it only 4 dB. It was originally invented to prevent overloading preamps during recording (it's very good at preventing distortion, and with digital recording this is more important than ever.) But now it's used to keep an audio signal on an even keel so the quiet sounds are still audible and the loud ones don't jump out at you. It's used most commonly on bass and vocals. It's a subtle effect, and most amateur players won't have a need to keep one in their rig.
