  • Wow.. Having visited many times in the past - A true appreciate of the size and scale of Cardiff Canton depot can only be seen from the air.
    The glory days of the past have passed with this depot previously stuffed full of Class 37 and 56 locos however it still impresses with it's scale.
    I had to film this footage from a lot more locations than at other depots to keep the drone in view.. Quite the place.
    Hope you enjoy the views and the overfly of the depot.
    Thanks for watching.

    The sweet smell of blackberries baking in the sun, mixed with diesel fumes and the smell of the underground fires from where the steam trains used to dump their ash… and the thunder of a double headed class 37 vibrating right through the summer air, drowning the sound of an ice cream van in the distance! Memories of hot summers as a child in the early eighties picking crab apples next to these sheds and lines… taking in the smell, sounds and sights of pockets of wild nature alongside industry! Growing up around that place will forever live in me and was the best playground any child could ever had… we respected it and never succumbed to any danger out of that respect! To sum it up… you didn’t need a train set, it was there in front of you to play with!

    Have you thought about flying over Barry Station CF62 Area as it has Probably 20-40 Brand New units stored there, Class 231 & 756 more than in Canton Depot.

      That’s a long way from where I’m based. I will get some footage when next in the area - I’m not sure when that will be though 👍

    I enjoy all you videos , I remember going around all these places with a rail-fans group with permits in the sixties . Sometimes we had the Forman or a driver who enjoyed a walk around as much as we did !

    Thanks very much for this video, Canton is local to me but have never seen it from the air before. Lucky shot of the 231 on testing and the Castle 43 at the brickworks siding

      Thanks Peter - I waited an hour for the 231 to run so there was a little method in that madness. Glad you liked the video 👍

    Thoroughly enjoyed your video. Could not remember the size of the depot as last visited late eighties. Was on an organized tour when a member of RESL.

    The big surprise for me (aside from this Yank finding myself in Wales) is that this massive transportation infrastructure is so very close to the city center. The surprise is from land usage. One might think that there would be other and better uses for the land (housing, shops, medical, industry, etc,) and not a railway yard. Nonetheless, the views were incredible and thanks for sharing this. The scale of this yard is breathtaking.

    I see the grand central 91 there, I’m guessing this will be turned into tfw 4 car loco hauled sets?

    • @mt5144
      @mt5144 5 місяців тому +1

      The 91 is actual a Non Driving DVT 82200 which is used on Push Pull on Class 67 Journeys between Cardiff-Manchester Piccadilly & Cardiff to Holyhead services, the 67's were using a 4 x MK4 Carriages + DVT but they are starting to add and extra Carriage making them a 5 x Carriage service with 67 Loco & DVT, Without Doubt, They are the Best Trains TFW have & if travelling 1st Class on this service really is the Best on BR Rails without a Doubt.

    Thanks for the video, this is one depot I never got round. Went over the access footbridge when I was around 13 and down into the smaller diesel depot to ask if I could go round. Got a big fat NO. So never got to see inside the larger diesel maintenance depot. I can see it’s still there but wonder what it’s used for today?
    And what number is the blue 08 please? Is that the only diesel loco on site now?

    • @stevetorfaen6824
      @stevetorfaen6824 Рік тому +1

      Did the same - managed to get half way over the footbridge before being told to 'bugger off' so me and my mate went to Marland House by the station to the offices and got a shed pass. We were then grudgingly let to go down to the shed area - but not inside. This was in the 1960s I hasten to add.
