- See aerial views of Crewe TMD(E) depot.. A large DB Cargo run facility that provides maintenance to the Class 90 fleet, Class 325 Royal Mail units and Class 67's plus others.
The site also has a significant number of stored/abandoned class 67, 90, 92 locos which can't easily be seen from the ground - Hidden away at the back is a Stobart Rail livery that I didn't know was there.
A shame to see so many unused locos at another depot - There are too many of these across the country! Sad to see..

yes and those 92sDB have just completeley just abandoned all there 92s apart from hs1 now

I just don't know what to say about it all! surely there's work these British made loco's as we had 1000s of locos that used to thrive the UK economy! what a sad country we have become 😢 great aerial video of this depot 👏👏👏

Fascinating, all those 92s & 90s just rotting away!
I can remember when sites such as these were tolerant towards enthusiasts and were often happy to accommodate a small group often at weekends on payment of a small fee to reserve a space. Its a shame that nowadays enthusiasts can't seem to be trusted and any polite requests nowadays and met with a stern 'NO'.
Afraid so, it's a fecking HR & H&S cover your arse issue with a splash of Karen in the mix, the guys at Leicester LIP are sold gold always very polite & accommodating.
this is due to the heath and safety laws thay have changed in the last 10 years and with a blame and clam we live in no place wants to pay for public lieabltey insureance which is what this place whould need to have to let anyone who was not working there on site hance no its a no way no matter how nice or safe you are.
@@davefreeman7629 all these businesses will have Public Liability insurance. What they lack are the spare staff to organise and host tour groups. Some still do though. Freightliner have organised tours at their facilities including Crewe. Even under BR, getting permits wasn’t always easy and some depots simply refused - it was left to each depot to make its own policy on them
Elf ‘n safety. No one dare take the risk of, eg, a visitor slipping into an inspection pit and ambulance chasing ‘claims are us’ companies going after the mega bucks.
@@brianwillson9567 I get your point and will admit that the sheds can be potentially very dangerous. However, surely it wouldn't do any harm to allow a small group access at a weekend to view/photograph the locos on the storage lines? If Basford Hall are happy to allow organised visits I really can't see why more sites can't do the same.
Loved the video footage. Never got round the depot back in the eighties when a member of RESL. At least four of the depicted locos are in my extensive model collection and two are repaints by Rainbow Railways. The WH Malcolm 90 is very impressive by RR and now have fourteen of their repaints.
Crazy seeing those 92s and the 67 sitting there redundant.

Royal Mail abandoning rail transport in 2003, just three years after the class 67s entered service
as you know the class 60 and 92 use the same body shell and they seem to be unwanted unused locomotives sadly they was the last British built loco's and are just left to rot away all over the UK at Toton/crewe all that money sat there doing nothing as they are barely worn in it winds me up no wonder rail fares are so expensive in rip off Britain!!!

I believe the 325 coupled to the 90 was the one that broke down and had to get dragged, but looks like the Stobart Rail one has been left doing nothing, I would defiantly like to see it out on the mainline, doesn't matter if it's being dragged but would be great to see it out.
Great video there of Crewe IEMD. Good to see some of the active DB90s not currently in use and those warm and cold stored examples as well. It's a shame there are a good number in store but something has to give for those to return to traffic. As in .. use electric traction for electric hauled routes ..instead of diesels one would guess

I’ll get up to Carnforth and get some shots there however Eastleigh isn’t possible due to Southampton airport being next door.

indeed crewe was once the heart of the railways it was built by the railways after all crewe whould not be hear as the town we know today if not for the railways its a shame crewe has lost so much of this part of its history mabe one day with hs2 comeing up crewe can once again be used for train works and be at the heart of the railways again we will see wont we.

A lot of these electrics just sit unused, its wasted potential , One of the reasons they never got used much was because the class 66s came and took their jobs .
I think these should be repaired and put to use again, GBRf should take more 92s and use them
This place needs to have an open day, come on DB show us those Railway line Queens which go No Where & make yourself some money for charity, Guaranteed to be a full house.
As well as needing several of the 92s there my last 67 (number 67026 in silver) is also present (and is visible on Googlemaps in the same position) Not much chance of seeing it from the road unfortunately :( Cracking video!!

Bescot used to be line after line of 20 37 66 08s 90s the lot all waiting for something to do

wow I had no idea so many class 90s had become dilapidated. I thought electric locomotives were in high demand.

Hopefully the 90's and 92's will see increasing work on inter modal and other freight flows. There does seem to be up take in this recently and a fair few of those are clearly not long term storage but just there for routine stabling and maintenance. The 92's really need to get out more.
At least some of these are defiantly already being used as spares donors based on the lack of pantographs.
Great Video again, nice to see whats out there. Just be careful the likes of PJ & DJ fruditors, are really putting honest folk with cameras in the spotlight now.
In what way are they abandoned? Surely just simply being stored there. Are all the cars there abandoned too? Are the people clearly working there abandoned? If they're not needed they won't be used. Simple as really.

DBS former EWS , a big fleet and not much work for most of them so they leave them outside to rot.
Is it a case of too many locos and not enough work for them to do, or rail operating companies that have surplus stock asking too much for them when offered for sale. It's a national disgrace that locos are just left rusting away and seizing up, certainly wouldn't of happened in BR days.
Sorry..wrong! Look at the wholesale scraping of Steam, not only at Barry but ,Doncaster, Hull. Eastleigh etc, It seems to me that dumping hundreds of locos is pretty normal for "British" railways. Sad to see any loco sitting there and rotting away.

No need for that - I’m not sure when I’ll next be anywhere close to Hereford however I will try for you as soon as possible.
Great videos but what an absolute disgrace how all these locos, that were nowhere near life expired have been allowed to decay to ruin, all paid for via the high fares and the private operator subsidies our taxes pay for. Also across your videos you can just see in many of the depots the lack of upkeep in the buildings and infrastructure, no clearing of vegetation or recent painting of faded buildings, all just has an air of decay and lack of upkeep and investment while dividends to shareholders are siphoned off the bank balances of these companies.
These are all freight engines so not paid for by your fares and it’s a lack of freight, especially through the Channel Tunnel that is the reason quite a lot of those on Crewe are stored.
Several of those shown are available for service.
I understand that the freight market has ups and downs, at least put the ones still serviceable under some basic protective cover, Christ you can by a supersaver gazebo from B&Q for less than £50. How much does it cost to at least afford them some basic protection from the elements. And if looking at these pics you can honestly say as much care and effort goes into maintaining the grounds and infrastructure of Crewe electric depot now c/w images of it from the past well you’re living in a different world to me or you’re a well remunerated share holder of DB shenker or one of the stock leasing companies for trying to defend this. Why did GBRF need to spend millions on the 69 refurb programme when there are all those 67s there sitting idle, it’s madness, all fragmented, no joined up coordination. Just a metaphor for UK plc overall
@@msdes82 67’s are only four wheels per boogie and don’t have the gearing for heavy freight work, they were built for the old mail trains, some have been re purposed with Mk5 stock for TFW on passenger duties but only as a stop gap until units arrive as they are expensive to run.
@@msdes82 but it was no different under BR, loads of locos dumped at places like Falkland Yard, March and Bescot. There are precious few 67s stored and certainly not enough for GBRF even if they were capable of doing the freight turns (very high RA) and were available at a fair price.
We live in a competitive world. If DB Cargo (not Shenker) have not got the work then they store their locos in case the work comes back. Do you see Stobart lending it’s Trucks to Russell’s or Malcom’s?
very ture of you saying this though working in a depot in crewe and it was not owned by any TOC nor by the public all thay cared about was money and getting trains in and out no care of the trains while on site just get it pass though the depot for serivce the next day and no one really cared for the trains just put a patch on it so to say while its staff were underpayed and over worked the depot owners were rakeing it in the depot was and still is in a poor state of repair no new paint jobs etc its such a shame that those once great clean places are now left to rot and then in turn condemed to closure due to heath and safety its nuts!! that trains that were steam were cleaner then the new trains today says someting about the state of our railways needs investments and progress dont u think. and its why i left the depot as it is just nuts how its run and manged now a days.

The economy is cyclic. It is inevitable that from time to time, rolling stock will get laid up. It is a good reason for refurbishment in favour of new build, and it was also be a good reason for the reintroduction of steam traction on secondary routes; the capital costs in both cases are so much lower. Investment decisions have been distorted over the past decade due to ultra low interest rates which were an aberration.
There is also the carbon footprint to consider; the embodied energy in rolling stock is considerable. If kit can be kept running for sixty or seventy years, the effective carbon print goes down.
Does Crewe Works still exist?
yes but its small now it used to be where the super store is and all of dunwoody way where the bingo hall is and the bowling place that too was part of the works but now its is a shell and one day the rest might end up being sold too a shame really but the railways in crewe are being sold off funny thing is in years to come the railways will regret this as thay will need works and places like crewe to build and look after the trains of years to come but no thay sell the works and the land around it for what nothing as crewe as not gained from this act has it and crewe should as its crewes history and any money should help rebuild the town after all crewe is the biggist railway staion in the cheshire east and 2nd to manchester in the north west so the investments should go to crewe and once the new staion platforms open platforms 13,14 and the 2 mabe 4in all bay ones at crewe it will be the biggist staion in the north west or on a par with manchester needs to start and look like it dont you think half the roof is missing from crewe staion and it needs some care investment for crewe not outside it dont you agree!!
@@davefreeman7629 the railways have moved on since BR and BREL existed. We are now a multiple unit railway with all main depots (like Longsight) having level 5 capability and many fleets are now maintained by the builders (eg Hitachi). New factories have been built for these companies like Newton Aycliffe. Crewe was always a loco and wagon works so it’s reason for being has gone. Doncaster is the same.
