A tip i learned was to put your bag in a pillow case, tie it closed and wash it and dry it that way.
If your bag is too big, use three cases; one on each end and one in the middle to tie it together. That way you can wash and dry your bag without the straps getting caught in any mechanisms.
Awesome idea they also make the netted zip bags in larger sizes that are used for delicates depends on back pack
Can you use any detergent soap like Tide?
Oh your sopposed clean it
😂😂 yeah, if it gets dirty, no?
This made me chuckle.
I’ve got an old pack from the 70’s and I really want to refurbish it and bring it back to life!
I love doing those types of things. So satisfying.
Another eye opener from REI, washing your back pack. Makes sense though. I need to try this way since it's winter time and thing are slow anyway.
I handwash my backpacks (scrub with a microfiber rag) and use a washer's spin function to remove water, rinse, spin, rinse, spin, hang to dry. Spin drying ensures sweat is completely removed and makes for faster drying time.
You can't do this though if the backpack is very large or if it has a metal frame. In that case, I use a shop vac to remove water between rinses.
i put mine in the washing machine and now its like new :)
no problem at all? i was worried about the foams...
I did this too, just put it in the washing machine and hang it, or if you are feeling brave you can throw it into the drier too! It worked for me.
Washing machine is fine just spray it with waterproofing after
With detergent? Or without?
I bought a used Kelty off of Facebook today. I just poured dish soap on it and hoses it down for like 15 mins. It worked.
so useful tips
Backpack in the washing machine...no problem , if you can remove the aluminium bars! Did that more than once. Even washed the mountain ropes! (No soap)
Now you'll know for next time! 😆
Use nikwax tech wash or baby shampoo both work a treat then reproof it with Grangers or Nikwax reproofed.
I just used an old toothbrush and some soap and water to clean it.
I used my dads bag and drack alcohol with me friends now it’s smells so much so I need to fix it quick
Haha, I hope you survived this dilemma
Try Dawn dish soap and hang dry.If that doesn't work rubbing alcohol with a sponge.but test for color fastness first
I didn't know that it's okay to wash a backpack. Might give it a try

The weatherproofing material on my REI flashpacks has started to peel off. I washed the backpack and the stuff came off looking like yellow boogers (ewww). Any suggestions on how wash and care for these packs? Thanks!
once the poly coating starts peeling there are not a lot of pretty fixes that are easy to complete. i just let the coating come off and use products like nikwax gear proof to apply a "DWR" to the outside.
LLBean’s instructions r more sensible. Doesn’t seem many folks will handle their day pack w/ kid gloves
Never seen so many straps
😂😂😂
What kind of soap we should use?
A clean soap
What soap might be recommended when your pack has mouse droppings & urine on it?
Lute Hawkswife use that soap
I’ve got that same problem and I’ve been looking for ages for info on the topic. It appears there is none.
Who’s urine? 😉
I was told use white vinegar or rubbing alcohol applied with sponge then wash back pack with Dr Bronners castle soap .Had a horrible roof leak in a rental which wrecked a ton of o.
Dr Bronners plus one@@gretchenlaauwe7575
You should probably do this in the driveway or garage, wife object strenuously if done in the kitchen 😂

Stryker A. Wolfe my wife bought me one of their flash 22 and the shoulder ripped. I took it back juuuust after a year and after they changed their lifetime policy to a 1 year lifetime policy. That's not a lifetime REI
I usually just toss it in the washing machine lol
Mark Jay Jimenez me too. I flip it inside out & run it through the gentle cycle. F**k it...
I want to do that. But my backpack costs 750$. I'm worried detergents might ruin it
@@shasan8272 mine backpack is 23 years old and i put it in the washer
@@rickortiz654 thanks, i just washed it the old way, but next time im not wasting time!
@@shasan8272 agree
Not water!
AHEM, this would've been useful when there were rotten peaches in my backpack... Someone said "what is that smell?"... Um yeah, had to put it on the ground so it wasn't noticeable
Now you'll know for next time! 😆
