just an explanation why baby shampoo is better than normal shampoo or dish soap: all types of soap have tensides in it which are basically molecules that attract water on one side and dirt on the other - so they encapsulate the dirt and bring it into a solution in the water. the difference lies in their acidity: normal dish soap has a very basic pH value so it is really harsh and can damage some materials chemically, while baby shampoo is more neutral and therefore not as harsh. still, even with harsh chemicals, most of the cleaning will always be just physically brushing the bigger particles away from the surface ... even with washing clothes most of the part is done by the washing machin physically movng the garments aroung and loosening the dirt particles. btw, great video, bo! thanks fpr sharing this advice in that prifessionally produced manner.

It's heavy, very well constructed, with lots of compartments and gear holders. However, the zippers-- I noticed-- were almost cemented together with sand-- and very tough to open! And at first, because of this--I was going to just give it away to another Veteran friend-- but later I thought, "No-- I'm going to learn how to clean it-- and get the zippers working-- and use it, because it's really a fine piece of military equipment!" And, being a Military Veteran myself, I deeply appreciated that one of my own carried it proudly-- and I wanted to do the same!🤗 I never thought that you could put a backpack in the tub (or a large Rubbermaid Bin) and wash it this way-- most especially the zippers-- and with a toothbrush! Who knew🤔 I'm excited to get started!
Great tutorial - only (for your commenters / viewers)... NEVER use the 'rough' side of the sponge. That is an abrasive, like sandpaper.. Or a cutoff disc for your angle grinder. It wears out, while it wears away the material you're scrubbing... (So that WILL damage the fabric or coating you 're desperately trying to preserve by using baby shampoo) A nylon brush (like a toothbrush, as suggested in the video) is a great way to agitate dirt, without destroying what's underneath the dirt. Hope that helped anyone / prevented any mishaps ;) Good video, btw. Nicely shot and good informational content. Thanks for the tutorial :)

Nice looking backpack. I got a 5.11 bag that I love to use. The British army use it as part of their kit. My last one lasted 4 years and that is everyday use. I just washed my old bag in the shower. I look forward to seeing how it looks when it's dry.
I got the Rush 24, I've had two goes at it and it is cleaner. But I'm thinking of putting it in the washing machine as it is dispensable after all. Your backpack is much easier to clean due to its more simplistic design. One problem with the 5.11 backpack is that as it has so many different compartments it is really easy to lose stuff in it. You think you've lost something but it's there hidden away in your bag all the time. Oh, and I've got two other more conventional rucksacks but I never use them as I much prefer my army bag.

6 Oct 23, Friday Bo, can I use pure Castille Lavendar or Peppermint soap, in place of the baby shampoo? I'm allergic to the SLS, (Sodium Laural Sulfates) in regular soaps or shampoos.
That's a good question. I speculate that this should not attack the fabric. I mentioned baby soap because something "harsh" like dish soap can more easily discolor your fabrics. But if it is anti allergic soap for your body I recon it should not damage the fabric. It's just important to relubricate the zippers afterwards
Anyway, I've bunged both my backpacks in the washing machine. (My newer bag on a 3hr cycle using persil liquid) and they've come out unscathed. My newer bag was really grimy, and smelt bad, and I had to give it a couple more scrubbings with a washing up pad. But now, I've got two identical 5.11 bags that look pukka. I'm now using the older one and getting more use out of it.
Hey Andy. Of course physically speaking this is possible. But keep in mind that some materials might wrinkle if you do it that way. And ironing a backpack is not possible. And worse case scenario is that you damage the materials. Furthermore some washing mashines might not be big enough to accomodate a bag without you needing to compress the bag. Therefore my advice would be to always hand wash your bags (especially if it is an expensive one like the CPL24)
