Ⓕ Center Drilling Dowel Standoffs For Desk Laptop Shelf
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- I needed to make a simple under-mount laptop shelf for the office desk I'm building my wife. Some center drilling on my wood lathe into some dowel stock made for some nice standoffs. A slot cut into some plywood proved to be my downfall

Thank you for taking time to not only teach us something, but also add a layer of comedy because it's always funnier when paint splatter happens to someone else. Keep it going Nick - we need this and anything else you can put out right now.
I appreciate that Mitch - and to make matters worse, it was a newer shirt with no glue on it yet!
@@NickFerry Yup.. that's a serious bummer
@@NickFerry Spills only happen on new shirts.
Loved it.....as always you give some great tips and ideas on unique projects. Also loved the humor. We all need that these days! It's great to see a series of video's from your shop again!!!
thanks as always Lori - it always feels good to show what i've been up to
"Concentricity." Wow! I don't hear that word on UA-cam often. I like it
Nice tips on the doweling kit. Especially having two drills preset so the holes are deep enough. Takes the guesswork and measuring out of it, you just know it's going to work. 👍
OMG, I thought that was me on doing the video with the paint shaking. Thanks for keeping it real.
HAPPY WIFE--HAPPY LIFE--MANY HAPPY UA-camRS. Thanks Nick!
Couldn't have been my phone... I forgot to put it on the charger... 3 days ago.... lol
Thanks for the video !! Really liking this build series. Hoping you and your family stay safe, pal !!
Haha - Thanks Dave - we need to hop on a hangout one of these days - they’ve been pretty regular with the quarantine
Nice build Nick. I like the idea of having the laptop under the desk. Might have to steal that
Some great Tips as always Nick. Hope you and the family are well.
thanks much Gary - same to you too man!
Amidst even a great deal of Tomfoolery, Conveyance of Ideas yet happened,
Progress occurred, and Promises of Future Futilities were made...
AGAIN, good tips & content, AND, you made the silliness look effortless...
haha, way too funny Mr. Harrod
👍👍
Good one nick. I like your methods and how you explain things.
Glad ta see ya back nick...keep up the videos please
thanks - working on another now
@@NickFerry cant wait!!!
Awesome work Nick! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred 👊🏻👊🏻
Great video! I love the tip about using the magnets to keeps the bits together, I will have to start doing that.
thanks Ashley!
Welcome back to UA-cam! I’ve missed your videos.
Thanks Pete
complicated the heck out of that nice !
Hi Nick, Great video. As Mike Fulton commented what a simple solution to drilling the correct depth by having 2 drills. If that had been me with the paint tin I would still be cleaning up. LOL Cheers, Huw
thanks
"Well, that was open." - Shot soda out my nose due to this statement.
Thanks for fun, interesting and useful video. It looks simple and stable.
As we run into issues building things, we are tested as to how best to do 'it'.
Centering the stock in your lathe , as an example, was a simple means to an end. Pondering other ways, without it becoming 'rocket science', there are countless ways to get it done. Since you have a 4 jaw chuck, rare earth magnets could be glued to a 4 piece jaw jig to 'self-mount' to the jaw as well. Making the radii a few bit sizes smaller could be cut, rather than the exact size, to form a more sure grip of you piece and still be 'centering' the stock. The magnets would make it easy to mount and they could,if glued on in a orderly manor, self storing, sticking to each other when not in use. But since its a one time need, it was all the task needed. Some of my jobs in Koa wood pieces were priced according to the desires of very rich people who had no limit on the price, the only limiting factor was could what they wanted be done. My first time with a need to use CAD, came from such a job. This couple had just returned from a trip to Europe with a picture of a 'piece' from a furniture show they got to. This was a piece from the 1600's and they loved the design , but it was huge. They wanted to know if they could have me make 2 night stands, for either side of their master bedroom's bed. I looked at it and answered sure , we can do that. Let me work out the CAD image of it at different sizes from your picture and i'll have it ready to view tomorrow. Zip. Zap, ready for them. They loved it! Please, can you make it for us! With no concern for the cost at all, in 6 weeks the job was delivered and $10,000 was exchanged! They were happy and of course, so was I. How we do a job, all is weighed out by the need of the client[or in our case, our wives when its at home] . This 'job' was before CAD was common place and Digital was still classified.
thanks much - pretty crazy what people want but it sounds like you came through
So true about pancakes!! LOL. Why is that the first one always comes out wrong?! That is one of life's great mysteries!
the world, may never know
Nick Ferry Lol. Great videos man! Really enjoy your work and tips! Thanks!
That was a very enjoyable video! Thanks
Wow Nick, tons of little tips and tricks. Keep emotional comming. Love your vids. Dean Kramasz
thanks Dean - I appreciate the support - stay safe down there
Nice video Nike! Thanks for sharing it with us💖👌👍😎JP
thank you JP
“Please mute your phone while watching.” 😂
You might put a ledge on the back of the shelf so the equipment will not push thru. Good Job
not a bad idea
Great video, very helpful
Great video man. Allot of good tips.
thanks buddy
Glad I am not the only one with paint malfunction when shaking
it gets us all at some time it seems
"Well.................... that was open" LOL!!! Ya sure did have me confused at the start. But then again.... I'm old. Keep 'um comin' and say "Hi!" to Dema if ya ever see him. Do miss his videos. JimE.
Thanks JimE - will do and be safe!
If you had cut the disc in half, an elastic band would hold them together so you can position it
Love the dowel centres, not just for dowels, but things like a 4 gang extension sockets or picture frames etc with keyhole slots in the back ;)
Love the elastic band idea!!! I may have to try that!! Thanks much man
Don't worry, be happy... you couldn't get a better designed ink print if you tried!
Hi Nick - I could have sworn you said you were going to throw on some glue !!!!
Where do you get those safety boots? I want a pair !!
Trade secret my friend
Another week and you'll probably take a page out of Izzy Swan's book and give the whole thing drill-powered height adjustment!
The two drill bit for the dowels, so simple why haven’t I through of it. Oh ya, because I’m a dumb ass
Holy cow Mike, go easy on yourself haha - you may have just one self deprecating champion! 😂 - PS - come hang out one of these nights
I was sad to see that Le bucket lid wasn’t the sponsor of this video
Haha - thanks man, have been watching for a long time!
Nick Ferry yes I have I really enjoy your content!
Hi Nick, just curious, what is the large MDF disk that is mounted to what looks like a screw chuck used for? Sharpening?
I made a disc sander for my lathe - I think it’s 20” diameter
drill the hole, cut in four, a dab of hot glue to each part to fix'em to the 4 jaw chuck. bob's your uncle.
I really like that idea - another suggested a rubber band to hold them together
shared Nick.👍👏👏👏👏👏
greatly appreciated
Are your jaws not numbered ie jaw 1 always goes back to the same position on the chuck?
mine are not - i could punch some on there - this is me circumventing that i suppose
@@NickFerry curious yes I would mark everything. I've got my 4 prong drive centre marked for the same reason. 👍🏻
Haha - mine is too
Why only one black leg? Did I miss something?
You didn’t miss anything - I could only paint one because I was still filming the video on making the feet - I normally wouldn’t do that but that’s kind of the timeframe when I’m recording some of my projects
@@NickFerry I figured it was something like that. Thanks.
I like pancakes
Mmmm
you really over complicated that dowel drilling Nick :P lol...
and to imagine, 15-20 minutes and i would have been done without the video
@@NickFerry lol! I like your videos. good job!
👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗
always appreciated buddy!
Is....that....a.....man.....bun!
I prefer to call it laziness, that became a running spite joke with the wife, that is now maintained and grown uncommonly long because of stupidity and lack for social graces in jest - but, "man bun" rolls off the tongue better, lol
First Maybe. Looking good.
Nailed it!
I miss hearing you on a podcast, just sayin’
And great tip on the two drill bits with collars
thanks - i miss doing it - you never know
Sorry for my phone , it s my sister , she don t know how to open the fridge ....
Fair enough
I hate the POLITICAL video prior to your video and will NOT remove my subscription to your chanel.
you can do youtube red to remove ads - that was not me promoting anything
