Triumph is a very underrated band with a lot of songs with a positive message.
Agreed, all three were way above average on their instruments, and they were/are all excellent singers. Emmett wouldn't have had an FX on his voice other than maybe a teeny bit of reverb. As for the positivity, I believe that was a credo of the band's. They wanted to show that rock could be really cool while still delivering a positive, supporting life-affirming messages. I think this one might have been written by Emmett for his aunt who had cancer. In terms of pretty universal positivity Rush kind of does the same thing but in a more metaphorical way, and they'll include more cautionary tales about how to find good things.

I was surprised and disappointed that Brad didn't focus on the lyrics like he normally does. It's exactly the kind of message he would dig. Confession: I always thought they were saying, "Fight the good fight everybody" all these years, lol. "Bah-oo-day" just sounded rock star cool. And it does, so there.

Lay it on the line is a good one. Rock and Roll machine Live has a great solo in it. Rik Emmett is a very underrated guitarist. They are another 3-piece band from Canada, like Rush.

It's actually from the Bible, from Paul the Apostle: "“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”". I've always loved this tune.
No auto tune in those days. That voice (along with Geddy Lee's) are all them.
Today you can still find music that does not use auto-tune and drum machines. It's a lot of digging to find it though.
Reliance on technology had really screwed up a lot of music today.
The culprit... are the tools. The internet, software - pro-tools drum-machines, programed , sound patches. Failing record labels striving to keep a share of the $. So, labels do so the most...
The old way of recording you had to spend a lot of time, you had to be on your game as a musician, as an engineer and as a producer. Editing was a splicing of analog tapes and re-pasting them together, either that or redoing entire tracks before the mix-down. Today you hear more computers, more electronically processed sound - including vocals. What's more for the love of me I cannot figure out why anyone would want to auto-tune a track of some artist who can actually sing. The end result is you eliminate so much of their dynamic and character out of the track.
When anyone asks me if I could hear the differences I'm honest - too much processing sounds washed, not natural which of course is true - it's not so much longer a recording of someone singing, the instrument or anyone in the band but machines compressing and limiting their performance. I think sinful.
It's even far more prevalent in percussions - drummers - and every style. genre and artist seems to do it today, more than half the drum tracks today - are not even real drums or drummers anymore. Over-processed, keyboards (what's the point of using a baby grand if you're going to process so much of it's characteristics out), I do not even ant to get started on guitars ... sure record straight in then take the track dial in one of the sampled settings of a particular head, cab, effects, room ambiance ... and you're stuck with the same basic tonal response as other millions of players.
My advice to young musicians ... get away from easy buttons, bells and whistle and look for your own sounds.

@@frightenedsoul I'm pretty dead on actually. I should had said said it's not really the technology - but the decisions to become so reliant on it.
When labels had to scale back just to stay profitable and deal with lost market due distribution the first thing they did was remove staff, then put pressure on producers to deliver quickly. That meant use less time to record and that also meant rely on computer software to make the corrections.
What use to be multiple takes on tape and splicing became, more often cut and paste digitally, what used to be varied dynamic became - let me turn on a limiter and auto-tune - which snaps each and every pitch to the nearest semi-tone within milli-seconds.... your wide vibrato - well it is not quite wide anymore, slides and wavers stair-stepped. Very few artist get much say in the matter. If you do not believe me go play with pro-tools
I actually know drummers who told me they were on the verge of quitting a band because some producer suggested use of a programmed drum track - just to keep the drum tracks exactly on and 120 bpm without a mico-second off.

@@frightenedsoul How would you say it? They're given a set of tools and decide to overuse them? Pitch correction, filters, snap to click-track, programmed instruments and patches, even autotune have their place - in an artistic perspective - but once that becomes prevalent in use, the norm - that becomes more and more part of the product, not really the artist nor the piece. So yes, the technology being used is a part of the issue.
I remember when napster came out - the labels went nuts - and as all the tools and scope of recording changed... that is how this became embraced and so entirely relied upon. That is the point we reached.

Both lead singers in this group have high pitched vocals. No "auto tuning" They send out powerful positive lyrics with great instrumentation. Magic Power, Follow Your Heart, lots of good songs by this trio.
I think he is referring to the engineering and mixing process.
Rik makes Gil sound like Barry White

This was all Rik Emmett's voice. Rik wrote this song about his aunt who was struggling with cancer at the time.
I never knew that.
Didn't either. Dad just diagnosed with liver cancer. Never drank just had ulcerative colitis. He just turned 77 on Wednesday. Was helping me renovation house 2 days before he went to this hospital. He and Rik are my heroes. No, c really my dad. I love him so much

There's no auto tune, no smoke, no mirrors. That's just Rik Emmett. I've seen Triumph twice, and they are one of those bands, that are held back by the studio, on stage, an incredible live band
Blinding Light Show in concert was a life changing experience and really opened my eyes to what live music could be!
Her take on what she was hearing was spot on. I loved this band.
Definitely not odd. Watch them performing this live at the US Festival in San Bernadino. His voice needs very little by way of studio enhancements. It's off the charts!

@@salv9983 Well that’s the beauty of music isn’t it that we all come away often with different interpretations. It can be a very personal experience in the matter how popular a song is there’s always going to be someone that may see it differently hear it differently. It’s quite amazing. Triumph isn’t exactly what I would call Prog rock but they certainly did have a very unique sound. Rick Emmet’s voice was truly one of a kind though. Their live performance at the US festival what is their best version of the song-hands-down.

The voice is all Rik Emmet. No effects(maybe a little reverb), he can just sing in that high register. He can hit an E with no problem. He still performs. He can't hit the high notes like that anymore but he is still a fantastic guitar player and great singer. He just sings in a different register now.
The drummer did a bit of the vocals as well. Both guys singing and playing at the same time is a testament to their talent
...saw Rik recently in an interview and performance, he is older now, but still sounds excellent...I have been urging them to do some Triumph for awhile, great band.The Canadiens have given us some great stuff over the years,
@@raymo6795, I've seen him play twice in the couple years pre-Covid. Him and another phenomenal guitar player. Incredible. Rik has changed the key of some of the higher songs. But, only real fans would notice the difference.
He also teaches music at Humber College in his home town, Toronto. How awesome would that be?!?!?

I definitely hear the Rush/Zeppelin influence, especially Rush as they are a 3 piece Canadian band like Rush is. Another song along the same lines as this is Never Surrender. It could almost be called a sequel to this song. Another song nobody does is Just A Game. Great song, it was a big song back in the 70s but is almost forgotten now. I hope you guys do more Triumph. Underrated band of the 70s and 80s. Magic Power was a big hit of theirs too.

Love Just a Game, and anything off of Thunder Seven. My neighbor was a salesman for RCA back in the day, and they signed Triumph for US distribution. He gave me a copy of every album from Rock and Roll Machine to Never Surrender. Thunder Seven is my favorite, as there is not a bad song on it, but even after that, they had great albums. Rik is a guitar god, if only for his versatility.
The guitar solo has SO much Jimmy Page in it…so much right from Stairway To Heaven. Such a great nod to another great.

Another 🇨🇦 classic rock band. Saw them live on New Year Eve...I wanna say 1980..Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto!!
The last solo Rik Emmett plays is such a sweet, simple and melodic piece. This style of playing is a talent shared with Neil Schon of Journey (probably due to Carlos Santana influence), and Gary Richrath of REO Speedwagon...Triumph is fantastic live...Emmett's vocals soar, and he is a master of many styles of guitar. Triumph is more straight ahead rock and less prog like the great Rush.
I've always heard a "Yes" influence in Rik's singing and playing.

Rush is not the only great 3 piece band from Canada, Triumph was definitely an underated band IMO.

I can't tell you what an impact Triumph had on my life, giving me endless amounts of joy over the years. They are without a doubt my favorite band. The guys are all talented, but the guitarist Rik Emmett, who is also one of the two singers is, without question, a once in a generation talent. Rik is a guitar savant who can play any style at virtuoso levels, with a God given voice to boot. Also one of the best live rock shows I've ever seen.
Great Canadian band. Trio. 2 great singers. Seen em' twice in the 70's.
Rik Emmet could hold his own with any of his peers. What a great player. Especially his 12 string Acoustic work.... Impeccable!!!!!!
This song is part of what I call my musical Bible, it is one of many that helped reinforce my traditional upbringing and kept me grounded through years of challenges!

The 2nd best rock trio to ever come out of Canada. They've written some great tunes. 'Follow Your Heart is a certified 'banger'.
The best one being Trooper, right? ;-) We do have a few contenders though - Rush is probably the one you're thinking of but there are a lot who would give the nod to Guess Who, BTO, or the Tragically Hip. A few might even cast a vote for April Wine.

My second favorite group ever. This band just kills it! Their lyrics are beautiful. And Rik Emmitt is the best guitarist ever. He has a PhD with the guitar! Let that sink in! A doctor of the guitar! He has a great voice. He is so humble. I have total respect for him and the band. And that is riks voice. No dubbing or autotune

And, As I listen to their conversations about layers of music, I want to tell them about the multi track recordings. Back in the day when one person would play more than one instrument, it was handy to just make tracks and put em together.

Triumph is one of my favorite bands. They are soooo underappreciated here in the U.S. One of my favorite things about them is how many of their songs have a positive and encouraging message. I recommend "Magic Power", "Follow Your Heart", "Lay It On The Line", "Never Surrender", and "Spellbound".

You made me realize how much I miss Triumph! I love that band! I’ve seen them a couple of times in concert, and I must say that Rik Emmett’s voice songs even better live! It’s hard to believe that they can make that much sound come out of three guys, so in that respect, they are like Rush, Lex!
"Lay it on the line", is the next best song from them. This is a three man band from Canada that was very popular late 70's into the early 80's.

"Magic Power" is certainly one of the most beautiful and catchy tunes you will ever hear, and I love that their video was from the US Festival, where you could see countless people grooving to and just *loving* their sound.
Another one of my favorites from back in the day. These guys should have been Waaay bigger than they were.
They were huge. From their first show on, they never once played a show that wasn't sold out. That's incredible. For some reason, they didn't continue to get much airplay after that era, even though Rush did, but they always had a big, loyal following

Canada is renowned for power trios - BTO, Rush, Triumph, Platinum blond....
One of the best songs of that genre/era. It's sort of an anthem really. So underrated as a player and singer is Rik Emmett. He's a better singer than Geddy Lee, and just as good if not better guitar player as Alex Lifeson. And Lex is right about Rush + Zeppelin.
I love Triumph and this song is the top of my list. Very personal message for me. Rik Emmett is a great vocalist. The drummer is a kick as vocalist as well.
To answer Brad's question. The effect you are hearing is called a chorus. The sound is subtly shifted slightly in and out of tune higher and lower to the musical note. It is used on guitars alot. It makes the sound fuller. I am a former pro musician and I am a recording and mixing engineer as well as a a producer. I use it mostly on guitars and background vocals.
BTW there was no such thing as autotune in those days. This a song from 1981. They were still recording to tape at that time. Autotune is a product of digital processing. It was first used in the Late 1990's.

Rik Emmett is an exceptional guitarist. Triumph was similar to Rush at the time, but Rush is more progressive rock. Triumph was more basic hard-rock ... Power Trios.
Quick note: starting in the late 60's and early 70's a lot of musical lines start to get blurred, genres cross and that stemmed from the "rock audience" becoming older - they were youth from the 50's/60's and now added 70's listening - what's more the widening audience more educated and worldly. Rock music (overall musicians) in turn sought to become more mature, sophisticated both in lyric and musicality, harmony, scales, structures - far more experimental musically.
Brad, you were mesmerized listening to this song, stop trying to not like it! Different is good, butter is good!

Finally! Triumph is awesome! They are very normal! Rik is a great singer/guitar player. Lay It On the Line is well known, but two of their best songs are Never Surrender and Time Goes By.

Lex hit the nail on the head with the date guess. This was from 1981, in the time when pure arena rock was dwindling to just a few remaining supergroups. You can still hear all the glory of 70s rock mixed with some guitar aggression from the growing metal movement.

Triumph is a very underrated band.
Lay It On the Line and Hold On are my favorites by this “other” trio from Canada. But you can’t go wrong with anything Triumph.
The effect on Rik's voice is called "chorus", or a "chorusing effect". It's more commonly used on guitars. It's a sort of swishing effect is the best I can describe it without giving an actual demo, (I'm a guitarist and I use it quite a lot).

Saw Triumph live here in Toronto. Maple Leaf Gardens. My first ever concert. 81 or 82. Harlequin and Teenage Head opened pretty sure (long long time ago, lost stubs and there may or may not have been some joints passed about 😉).

Glad you finally got into some of the best music from my highschool days. Rik really sings at that register (back then anyhow). Check out a live performance, you'll see. He sounded that good when I saw them live.

Love watching Lex's reactions when she gets into something. The music really goes through her. Brad on the other hand - let's just say that music seems to baffle him - no connection to it, especially if he can't relate to the lyrics.
There’s no effect on Ricks voice! I’ve seen them live and his voice is amazing! They didn’t have auto tune back then, just raw talent!

"Follow Your Heart" is a must Triumph song. It's a catchy positive anthem.

I'm not hearing what Brad is hearing... maybe it's the way the mix comes through on headphones. That's why I usually don't like listening to music on headphones. If the mix is weird or unbalanced, as many are, headphones can make it worse.
I especially hate it unbalanced between channels. I want to hear all the instruments and vocals in both ears at the same time, as nature intended. Some more subtle movement between channels is cool, but not hearing guitars and drums in one ear and vocals in the other, or anything like that. It's just annoying and distracting.
It may work better with speakers, especially when not too separated, but not so much with headphones, imo.
Simply put Triumph is one of the greatest bands that has ever existed and they do not get the recognition that they deserve one of the greatest imports from Canada along with Rush and The Guess Who

Saw this band in early 80’s as the opening act for Journey.....they were great
