      I genuinely don't understand the people who don't put them at least in their top 5. Their career spanned 19 albums, several genres, amazing lyrics, spectacular music. They did prog, metal, pop, straightforward rock, alternative. And by all accounts were just generally amazing dudes. Their final album is one of their best. How many bands made up of 60-something dudes can say that?
      I have yet to meet someone who's actually listened to Rush who doesn't absolutely love them.

      @@HollowGolem I've listened to hundreds of hours of Rush mostly because my mate is the type of guy who lives in different Rush t-shirts and hoodies. I rate all three of them among the best for each of their instruments. As a guitarist and a bass player, yeah, Geddy and Alex are up there. Neil is constantly referred to as the best. Some of their songs are genius. 2112 is incredible work and the fantasy story being analogous to the music industry and 2112 itself being a big fuck you to their record label... all awesome.
      Some parts of Rush I really like. Some parts in some of their songs are incredible, be it groove, rocking out, ambient or whatever. But it's usually short lived sections. They live in the world of technical music, their constant time signature changes get in the way of it being enjoyable, Alex's guitar work can feel so out there and unnatural that whilst technically amazing isn't nice to actually listen to, the lyrics and delivery can be so cheesy, even cringy (even if the message and concept is really well delivered).
      Again, I like Rush. But I very rarely listen to them of my own accord. Rush make songs you can really appreciate on your own with good speakers or headphones. But they don't make songs that cause people to dance, headbang, sing or light up any social event.

    • @HollowGolem
      @HollowGolem 3 роки тому +2

      @@naycnay it sounds to me like you might enjoy their '80s and '90s material a little more, when they were less focused on technical musicianship and more focused on writing good songs. Have you heard "Territories," "Middletown Dreams," or "The Pass?"

    If you want to confirm you notion that this song can be applied to high school, watch the official video. I have always thought that Rush was a band for people who didn't necessarily fit in with the cliques that they grew up with. Rush's music was always very "supportive" to me growing up. If I felt like I was feeling a particular way, for example, feeling isolated or lonely, Rush's music always kept me company. In some cases, such as this song's lyrics, Rush's songs were very empathetic in a way. Such a great band.

      During that time. Later on Alex and Neil pushed Geddy hard to get back to basics and give the synths a rest. Alex wanted to get back to a more guitar driven sound. But it all worked out over 40 years. RIP Professor, your lyrics reached a lot of us and let us know it's alright to be our own person.

    My father has played drums now for 60 years (he's 71) and we always listened to Rush in the car when I was a kid. This was always my favorite Rush song, and it rarely gets the listens it should. I love when people get to experience something for the first time that has been meaningful to me for most of my life. Great video!

    Well done on catching the true meaning of this song. A lot of us can relate to Neil's brilliant lyrics. Rush's music was poetic and instrumental genius. Their songs touched you to your core. Brilliant, inspirational, and most haunting. Analog Kid, and Losing It (on the Signals LP) are also works of art.

    The interesting message in this song for me is how, after being drawn to the rebellious excitement of the city, we all end up damaged and yearning for the comfort of the thing we grew up hating: the subdivision. And so the cycle perpetuates itself in our children and their children. Conformity --> rebellion ---> conformity.

    I love watching you guys experience all the music that I loved growing up. I was particularly intrigued by the way you got into the lyrics of this song.
    Neil Peart (RIP), in addition to being arguably the best percussionist who ever lived, was one of the most intelligent lyricists that music (especially Rock music) has ever known.
    Like all great literature, the lyrics are timeless, applicable across all time and social strata.

    You two hit deep right from the start, well done. Drummer Neil wrote the lyrics for the songs. He was a well read intellectually deep person and you can tell in his writings. Amazing how 3 guys produced such a rich, complicated multisound. So many thought this was far more people creating this music yet, just the three. And they produced it live themselves, unreal. Neil is the reason I started playing drums. An incredible band.

    Gheddy Lee's parents were both in concentration camps in WW11. (His parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors from Poland who had survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II.) I think his writing reflects the upbringing he must have had by his parents. To live his life and express himself fully. Sub Divisions reminded me of this little know fact about him. Plus the added genius of Alex Lifeson and Neal Peart makes for one of the greatest bands of all time.
