Christopher Nolan's picks for February

- Oscar-nominated director Christopher Nolan explains why the early works of Alfred Hitchcock inspire him and why he believes 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY gets closest to a pure cinematic experience. These films along with HOOP DREAMS, TOPKAKI and ODD MAN OUT are the ones he's most excited to see this month on TCM.
Look for these films on Watch TCM at tcm.com/watch.

Nolan is truly a legend and even more for admiring Hoop Dreams. He should make a documentary someday.
He has made a documentary - “Quay”, from 2015. It was about the Brothers Quay, two brothers who make stop-motion animation films.
Hoop Dreams is over of the most lauded and beloved documentaries of all time.
I LOVE to see big names supporting TCM!!
Nolan could be heading to a very big night at the Oscars. Definitely see his sensibilities in 2001, Topkapi and The Lady Vanishes, but love to see him gush over Hoop Dreams, one of the all-time Oscar oversights.
Very happy to see Nolan acknowledging Hoop Dreams - the closest thing to a life story within a single film.
Those are nice movies, Nolan.
Odd Man Out is directed by Carol Reed, the director of The Third Man. Was Nolan making reference to the Third Man in this video but they edited it out? He says "the later film" but there's no context to what he's talking about.
I like James Mason but his bad Irish accent was very distracting for me.
The cinematography in Odd Man Out is stunning, some of the best noir visuals I've ever seen. I agree about Mason's accent though, it was dreadful.
I also assumed he was talking about The Third Man. man i love that film
I’m not even really that into basketball but I have to agree with Hoop Dreams here. It’s such a great documentary.
Have seen, and love, each one of these. I love to see Odd Man Out getting a mention.
Wow this was such an excellent video, I'm really adoring this channel and the consistent uploads, thank you!! Time for me to tune into TCM this week 😄
TCM has forgotten to play the Dr. Kildare films. As well as the Maisie films this winter.
Suppose Lew Ayres and Ann Southern are not important to the TCM bots who program their films.
I thought I saw the Dr. Kildare movies on the guide sometime in the last year.
Operation Petticoat hasn't played on TCM in over a decade, please tell them to consider it.
The obly movie left out of the description is The Lady Vanishes.
With Spielberg and Scorsese being at the agethey are it's really amazing to see younger (and in this case extremely popular) filmmakers still champion film history 👏👏
Got to check out Topkapi!!
Nolan is not only an incredible film maker, but a film connoisseur. It’s his passion for film and film history that really fuels the innovation we see from him today.
Loved his picks!
The Lady Vanishes! Yessssss!
Sounds like my relationships
One of my favorites
And, dare I suggest, ''The 39 Steps'' ?
The lady Vanishes is the best as well as the 39 Steps
Surprised you didn't mention Notorious, an excellent Hitchcock film that TCM hasn't shown in years, just aired 2/5.
One of my favorites!!
Sure, but it’s the entire plot of Mission: Impossible 2, and there’s apparently only room for one thriller that Mission has stolen from wholesale on the list.
@@IainLambert"Stolen wholesale?" Come on, it's a blockbuster. Of course it's going to carry plot elements from a well known classic film. That's what movies are these days. Now whether they are good is another story, but acting like it's theft when it's the normal hollywood process seems unfair to me
@@echernaut oh, I totally mean it in the “talent borrows, genius steals” way. Just because De Palma knows his film history well enough to nick the silent, suspended heist imagery from Topkapi and Rififi, doesn’t mean he didn’t make it his own.
Thanks. Topkapi an all time favorite. Delightful entertainment, Ustinov at his best, Schell is “Swiss,” and let’s not forget Akim Tamiroff, who’s so subtle, you almost miss him. Can’t wait. Best line: “Arthur, you’re a carbuncle on the behind of humanity.”
I will be watching these movies!!
I wish Nolan would make a smaller Hitchcock style thriller.
I miss TCM - they have such great films.
What is that version of turkish march playing when he talks about topkapi? Anyone know:) have a great day
I was so upset when Hoop Dreams didn't get the Oscar for Best Documentary.
This is a great list 😀
anyone knows the watch on his hand?
Over 200 films and I’m lucky
if I can find 5% to put on my
Watch List. So this weekend
I’m watching a bunch of
free bios on YT and renting
A New Leaf and taking
out a few of my Wheeler
& Woosley gems from
my collection. So there.
Surprised he mentions little gem called topkapi!, it's wonderful heist movie, the stealing scene may inspire brian de palma's mission impossible's most memorable scene
So frustrating TCM channel got taken off TV
❤
Christopher Nolan, The Director Hollywood needs. But the one it deserves.
We get it WB, u want Nolan back.
hoop dreams wow nolan knows ball
Stanley Kubrick! 2001 is a masterpiece. Alfred Hitchcock! The Lady Vanishes is excellent, entertaining.
Hey Nolan, you have great taste in film.🎥 😊
Why can't TCM play Kind Hearts and Coronets. It is a masterpiece from the legendary Ealing Studios in Great Britain. Joan Greenwood's portrayal of the adultess Sybella is for the ages. She makes adultery seen fun.
@@Rubi-ll8ss I remember that film! Alec Guinness. What an actor he was.
Kind Hearts and Coronets is post war masterpiece. There are descriptions of the film by British commentators on you tube.
By the way Guinness plays eight characters., which all get murdered by Dennis Prices character. The funny part after one of the Guiness characters dies, another Guiness character appears.
The film is a black comedy Noir.
I have owned 2001 on VHS, then DVD, then blu-ray (and saw it at the cinema in 2001). It is such a cliche to recommend it on things like this.
Hard to believe but both Nolan and Gerwig loved 2001. And both gave us Barbenheimer.
2001 isn't exactly a cult classic. lots of people love it. its like saying "can't believe two people love star wars"
Because they are in the same club
What if Hollywood shows its true colors and shafts Nolan on Oscar night?
31 Days of Oscar is a joke. Most of the selections are multiple repeats belonging to the Warner Catalog. The selections are a total bore.
TCM has the gall to play the same old films over and over again.
TCM get your act together and play better varaity of movies.
Please stop playing the plug for Carders boring Academy Award Book. He doesn't do a. Deep dive. The book is about contemporary Academy Awards, not the Classic Films😅
Please stop playing The Philadelphia Story. So far this year, it has been played about eight times.
TCM doesn't understand Overkill.
I suspect they are losing more viewers. By the day.
Why can't TCm get Disney's masterpiece Fantasia for its viewers. I saw it in a theatre. It is mind boggling to seel it the Big screen.
🎉
