I just want to say, placing Suzanne Somers in her ethereal American Graffiti role right after Raquel Welch's "guardian angel" quote is just one reason why TCM's tributes are miles above the Oscars' or anyone else's. There's thought behind the editing of these little gems that illustrate how much the people who put these together know, love, and most of all, revere movies, and the people who make them.
Well put.
And that scene in American Graffiti with Suzanne was memorable
I wholeheartedly agree. TCM is a beacon of class and taste. Those of us who appreciate classic/iconic films applaud their efforts. Damn, I didn't even know about Melinda Dillon and Barry Newman. Melinda was such a gifted, versatile actress. And Barry's role in Vanishing Point is legendary. R.I.P. to all who passed.
@smichelle65 your point about the TCM tributes vs. the Oscars is so right. Much more thought and care put into them.
As Carly Simon might say" Nobody does it better; makes me feel sad for the rest. Nobody does it half as good as you; TCM, you're the best."
TCM always does a spectacular job, much better than the Oscars.
TCM is better
than anyone.. The Grammys are the worst, unfortunately.
Here, Here! TCM does it RIGHT!
Agree. TCM does it with artistry and poignancy. ❤❤
Stupid comment! The Oscar have less time. It's not better, it's just different!
TCM should be allowed to be part of the planning of the Oscars presentation, keeping the history of Hollywood alive and showcasing living and a passed on actors!
Every year, this never gets any easier. We may not have known them personally, but they were part of our lives.
So wonderfully put.
Amen.
🧸🎭🧸🕊
And they will all be a part of our lives 'till God calls for us. Black and White film is the absolute best viewing of these wonderful actors and actresses. And to the directors and orchestra music that does so much for these classic films.
This year was much better compared to 2022.
@AgentGibbs
Comparatively Speaking these most recent two years combined had *NOTHING* On 2017 or 2015..
Absolutely.. ..Devastating. . 🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸
If there's a word that sums TCM up, it has to be "class."
RIP to all those great talents we lost this year.
Class is right on the money. Everything is done with respect and dignity, and people who contribute behind the scenes, whose names might not be known to many people, are treated the same as the stars.
Dear Academy and Emmy Award producers: Hire the people behind the best annual tribute of its kind for your upcoming In Memoriam segments next year. You will NEVER have an issue again with leaving people out.
1. The producers aren't responsible for who makes the In Memoriam. The Academy sets up a committee that meets over the course of a month. The In Memoriam has to represent all 18 branches. Actors are only one branch, so many famous people are going to be excluded. There are like 700 deaths and only like 70 can make the telecast and the segment can't be too long.
So hiring the TCM In Memoriam people, who don't have to deal with these obstacles and who can do what they want and include Suzanne Somers (whose movie fame amounts to a few seconds), won't solve the problem.
@@Okaydo1 I can see what @simonapplebaum2447 is getting at. I can see the Academy's issues also. As a viewer, one of the highlights is In Memoriam. The program is just too long. In short, I have found, over the years, if I find the In Memoriam segment a main highlight, then there is something to be desired about the program. Audience panning just does not get it.
WHY I NEVER WATCH THE OSCARS ANYMORE
Amen
Except that TCM left out Phyllis Coates, who died in October. Good actress from the 40s-50s, also played Lois Lane in The Adventures of Superman.
Every year, TCM says goodbye to those we lost and tears appear in my eyes after the first viewing. It's phenomenal what the people at Turner Classic Movies are able to capture in under five minutes for the multitude of loss we who have appreciated the art of film feel each year. I feel I say this every year, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in their Oscar In Memoriam part of programming should take their cues from TCM.
Much too fast to see, read, remember, or feel anything except the thinnest sliver of would-be emotion, instantly forgotten in the tsunami that follows each name....It rightly should be a minimum of 15 minutes in order to treat the dead, and us, with honor, sensitivity, compassion, and passion. (We can take it, even in this era of speed without focus.)...Otherwise, it is just a barely seen list with barely seen pictures, accomplishing nearly nothing, a potentially powerful exercise in shared creative humanity....Better than the Oscars (which should never be referred to as a benchmark). But perhaps not really. Better, probably, than nothing. Maybe not.
True first biggie was when we lost Robin Williams that one got me then Gene Wilder Burt Reynolds Sean Connery and all our stars will some day die but there are great ways to remember them.
Exactly...❤
or let the TCM people take it over.
@@MrAsiafilm My thoughts exactly. Barely got a chance to glimpse at the names and faces of some, especially David McCallum. Had to pause multiple times to see everyone. Could of saved time by not showing the dude wrapped in a sheet or whatever that was.
TCM should be in charge of this for the Oscars. They waste so much time focusing on the musical tribute and don’t feature enough of the departed on screen. Tonight they had Lance Reddick, Burt Young, Ray Stevenson, and Treat Williams relegated to a list of names shown at the very end
That list at the end made me so mad. It's amazing how the Academy keeps finding new ways to be disrespectful while paying respects. Whoever directed that segment should be ashamed of themselves.
Agreed
This Canadian was happy that you included Gordon Pinsent, Matthew Perry and Robbie Robertson. All were true icons whom we'll all miss.
Marty Krofft was a Canadian. He did "Pufnstuf" (1970) and "Land of the Lost" (2009). He too will be missed.
I hadn't even heard that Gordon Pinsent passed. I loved him as Hap Shaughnessy on the Red Green Show.
@@ceftx2375 He was not a movie star!
@@pernelldh But he worked in TV more than film. The Emmys win probably acknowledge him.
Pinset starred with Olympia Dukakis in a very touching movie about a man dealing with his wife's dementia. "Away From Her"
No one can do tributes like TCM, thank you!
Damn right
Yes, always well put together and touching...loved Tom Petty
Right!!! No one does it better than them.💔⚘️
The remembrances for Tina, Gina, Raquel, and Suzanne were perfect. Thank you, TCM, for always remembering those who, despite not knowing personally, we loved.
I didn't know about Raquel and Gina. Now I'm really bummed.
And let's not forget Cindy either. Cindy Williams appeared with Suzanne Sommers in the movie "American Graffiti", made in 1973. They both went on to becoming major sit-com stars on TV later on that decade. Cindy became famous as Shirley Feeney in the series "Laverne and Shirley", with Penny Marshall. And Suzanne went on to play Chrissy Snow, in the program "Three's Company", in which she co-starred with John Ritter. Those two girls were among the funniest women ever seen in situation-comedy shows during the 1970s. Thanks Cindy and Suzanne, and the rest of you women, for all the years of great entertainment you have given us. Rest peacefully, and may God bless you.
I’m glad they included Suzanne Somers. That scene in American Graffiti is iconic
Was that bit the extent of her role in the film?
@@Garsons-oq4lh Yes but it was one of the most memorable scenes of the movie. It was the driving force behind Richard Dreyfus’s character.
Before Suzanne became a household name Johnny Carson had her on his show and before he introduced her he said America has been asking who the blonde in the thunderbird is and he went on to say we have her now then she came out and was interviewed.
@@Garsons-oq4lh We hear her voice near the end of the movie in a phonecall with Richard Dreyfuss
And the way she mouthed 'I LOVE YOU'....Perfect ❤️
@@julieannalbuzbeba253 nobody has done such a simple, universal thing better. iconic
I love how they showed Andre Braugher in a clip from Glory!
He was so heart-wrenching in that film, deserved to be nominated alongside Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor!
R.I.P Alan Arkin 1934 - 2023 ⚰️🕊️
I am so moved. TCM nails it year after year. That quote: “it doesn’t make sense to leave home to look for home, to give up a life to find a life, to say goodbye to friends just to look for new friends.” 😭
TCM habitually chooses poignant and apt songs for their TCM Remembers tributes.
RiP, Cindy Williams, who delivered that line so beautifully.
That was my favorite line. 😢
I am crying in my car as I watch this over and over (while parked!)
As a Brazilian, it was truely moving to see the great Léa Garcia on this beautiful tribute. One of the greatest actresses in my country's history. Do yourselves a favor and please watch Black Orpheus, the movie in which she appears and that is played in this gourgeous video! Her legacy will be eternal! And thanks to TCM for always doing such an amazing work!
Yes. Lea Garcia from "Black Orpheus", one of my topmost favorite films. The actor Breno Mello as Orfeu and Marpessa Dawn as Eurydice were both born to play those parts. I believe they both died in the same year too.
Thank you for the movie recommendation and of this actress.
i became aware of this great movie as a result of becoming a Jobim fan.
I saw Black Orpheus on TCM a few years ago and was impressed with the location the film was shot in, as well as the featured actors' performances. An international classic.
@@Celluloidwatcher --
I loved the opening shot of an ancient Greek white marble frieze showing carvings of Orpheus and Eurydice. The ancient motif then comes to be seen in the modern day in Brazil.
I cry watching this every year. So many people who gave me so many hours of enjoyment and life landmarks. Thank you, TCM, for doing this each year.
Same here for me as well😢
Thank you for remembering David McCallum. 🌹
Illya Kuryakin, Sol Madrid, and many others in his roster of characters.
Paul Reubens’ passing was the most painful. The Alamo salutes you, Pee-Wee.
I’m still devastated.
Jan Hooks' spirit will give him a guided tour of Heaven, but "Please hold all your questions until the end."
@@scockerybut not the basement. 😊
Screw that PERVERT good riddance, him and Robert Blake
I know. The hardest losses are the ones you traveled with all your life. That goes for you too, Robbie Robertson and Treat Williams!
Every year I watch TCM Remembers and bawl my eyes out. Classic movies are a big part of my life. It’s like family members have passed.
The one from 2014, omg. It took a while to compose myself.
Some of those names and faces really hit hard... We have lost a lot of amazing people this year
Thank you for including Julian Sands 🥺💕
Frederic Forrest and Cindy Williams portrayed the two individuals surveilled by Gene Hackman in the brilliant “The Conversation.” It’s her voice in the start of this montage (from “American Graffiti”).
They did a taped audition for Star Wars together as well.
The Conversation was absolutely masterful. Vastly under-rated.
Cindy Williams' great talent was in her "ordinariness" she embodied people one sees every day, going about their lives. That way, she was able to be so convincing.
I just watched Valley Girl for the first time and noticed Frederic Forrest reuniting with Apocalypse Now costar Colleen Camp!
This is probably the most heartbreaking TCM Remembers they have done in a while. :( So much better than the Oscars' Memoriam tribute.
oh by infinity.
The Academy Awards is no longer an honorable award ceremony. The Oscar has been reduced to a participation trophy.
Every year it gets closer to now includes our generation.
Nope.
Cry not because they have gone, but smile because they were here! Thank you TCM for a wonderful tribute!
crying while reading
So true. I lost 2 of my sons in the past 14 months. 44 and 46. I am 71 and never thought they would be gone before me. I am very sad but it is true what you said I always remember the great times we had and look at the photos and smile. When I watch TCM Remembers there are many actors that we watched together as a family and it make the smile. I hope we will all be together again in a better place. This world can be rough.
Once again, TCM not only does an excellent job with its yearly memorium segment, but managed to include those we lost very recently. Those in charge of the Oscar Awards broadcast should take notes.😊😊😊
It's apples and oranges. TCM is free to do what it wants. The Oscars In Memoriam is decided by the academy. They have to reduce 274 names down to 55. And of that 55 has to represent 18 branches of the academy, one of which is acting. So many actors are going to bed left out. The TCM montage is great, but it excludes many of the people who will be honored in the upcoming Oscars In Memoriam.
@Okaydo1 Your points are noted and reasonable. The names left off of either list likely involved some difficult choices. There are other ways to remedy this, such as presenting more detailed listing online. In this year's Oscar broadcast, the memoriam segment was rushed through so quickly, yet the commercials afterward were aired at regular speed. I acknowledge that the bills have to be and should be paid. But the people that we lost were cherished and remembered professionals within and/or connected to the industry. They should be treated as such.
@mcoleman6893 - WORD CORRECTION FOR NEXT TIME - ' memorium ' IS INCORRECT AND S/B ' memoriam '. " THE GRAMMARIAN "
@@mcoleman6893 - FURTHER WORD CORRECTION FOR NEXT TIME - IT IS VERY POOR ENGLISH TO WRITE OR SAY " off of " WHICH TOO MANY SAY ALL THE TIME - THE WORD " off " BY ITSELF IS THE WAY TO ALWAYS GO - EXAMPLES - NO ONE STEPS DOWN ' off of ' A LADDER OR GETS DOWN ' off of ' A BED. " THE GRAMMARIAN "
@@claymarston8764 I want you to be my Grammarian; how much?
Beautifully done as usual, TCM. This rendition of Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly" was perfect for this. RIP to them all.
Whose version is this?!!! Can't find it with shazam . . .
@@tooluser In the caption it says performed by AG and Christina Perri but I can't find it on Spotify under either of them. I think it's a beautiful version.
Not only did TCM do another crackerjack job on its year-end memoriam, but they were able to pack 96 people (most ever since the station began doing this) into the tribute in under 5 minutes!
4.25, to be exact.
What is wrong with you? Most folks commented that this was a very good tribute. Why do you think the way you do? Are you that unhappy with your life? If you can't say anything nice then don't speak at all.
@@Garsons-oq4lhWow, impressive.😂
They didn't put Jimmy Buffett in. On purpose?
@@walteregan1621
He doesn't belong here...what did he act like, a singer 😂
So perfect to use Tina Turner's character Auntie Entity from Mad Max: Thunderdome in her tribute. That amazing character design has been in my mind for over 30 years.
FYI that was her only acting role
The theme song "We Don't Need Another Hero" is incredible
@@goldenvulture6818She played the Acid Queen in Tommy, The Who's rock opera made into a movie. It was released in the mid 1970's.
@@goldenvulture6818 no it wasn't.
She was also The Acid Queen in Tommy.
Absolutely amazing.
I wanna take this moment here to shout out to Burney Mattinson.
He was an animator for Disney and worked on some of the best films from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Including Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, and The Jungle Book (the ladder was the Frozen of its day).
rest in peace to all.
True. And the recent Disney short film Once Upon A Studio was dedicated to his memory (he was at the beginning of the film by the way).
Have been so broken up over David McCallum's death. I wish TCM had included a special "In Memoriam" to him. I knew him first through all of his movies NOT his tv shows -The Great Escape; Freud; A Night to Remember; Violent Playground; The Greatest Story Ever Told... Etc... will miss him very much ♥️
David McCallum will always be our Ducky in NCIS.
Once u have seen his Outer Limits episodes, u cannot forget him. Brilliant actor!
The man had a fantastic run. From the mid-50's to now.
I first knew him as Ilya Kuriakin from the Man from UNCLE.
The Man fron U.N.C.L.E.! I loved that show. He was married to Jill Ireland, but she left him for Charles Bronson.
My favorite - in the 1980s composer Carl Davis revived Abel Gance’s classic 1927 silent film “Napoleon” with an original score. TCM took a clip from that movie and created a 3-split screen, with each screen appearing in synch with three drum beats of the tribute song, and on the fourth drum beat, Davis’ photo appears alongside the movie clip. That alone shows the kind of thought TCM puts into their annual tributes. Bravo to the editor who did that.
That tryptich actually appears exactly that way in Kevin Brownlow's restoration of Napoleon. Can't see that restoration in the US because Coppola holds the rights and will only allow the earlier mid 1980's version to be shown as it had a new score by his father, Carmine Coppola.
Done with beauty, grace, and immense respect as always. We lost so many significant figures this year, and they could have asked for no better tribute.
The Oscars and Emmys can't get their shit together enough to make a good in memoriam yet here TCM is making me cry every single year
The most beautifully produced tribute to these talented artists. Thank you for including Frederic Forrest.
Loved him in Valley Girl.
He was also a joy to watch in The Rose 🌹
It's Stacey 😂
Fred....that's my leg 🤣
Blew his Birkenstocks
A great actor who just grazed the bottom of being among the very, very best.
Blue Duck died????? Lonesome Dove!!!
These have always been touching and classic....the older I grow, the harder they are.
Beautifully done

To Jimmy Buffett too who they left out.
Lara Parker was overlooked
@walteregan1621
He was a mediocre singer, not an actor of stature 😂
I didn’t know Andre Braugher had passed, so sorry to see that. A brilliant, poignant tribute, TCM.
It was just a few days ago.
I didnt know Raquel Welch died!
So sad. He was only 61. An excellent actor.
@@michelekelly6502 According to Wikipedia, Raquel passed February 15.

I was half expecting Melinda Dillon to be featured for her role as the mother in A Christmas Story. Great quote from Michael Gambon! Lots of legendary directors, and I knew Ricou Browning would be on here! Rest in Peace everyone
Oh, this is a devastating amount of loss. TCM does these tributes so well.
Thank you including Cindy Williams and her beautiful voiceover from American Graffiti.
Yes! And she and Frederic Forrest were the subjects of Gene Hackman’s spying in “The Conversation,” a brilliant film.
TCM is the master of The Memoriam, beautiful poignant.
Every year you do this so well there should be an Emmy award for it.
TCM memoriam tributes presentation is the best in the American industries.
Beautifully done -- seemed surreal to see Tina Turner in that reel, but that's where we are. Lots of talent from a time that doesn't seem so long ago.
Heartbroken we lost Cari Beauchamp!! She was my favorite guest speaker to introduce films at the TCM festival. I would often choose screenings just based on the fact that she would be the guest.
I worked at TCM for 20 years and worked with Cari on several projects. She was a lovely person and a marvelous speaker. I am saddened by her passing.
@@lesto59 gone too soon
Classic, just Classic. Always done with style, grace and class.
No one and I mean NO ONE does it like TCM.
Rest In Peace.
Dave McCallum defeated the aging process, he looked so young even in his nineties. Ageless even before his death.
The best channel on cable. Now Warner Bros Discovery, how about making the entire TCM channel either part of MAX or a stand alone app for those of us who have ditched cable.
TCM has turned the remembrance video into an art form. These are just so beautiful. Michael Gambon and Harry Belafonte at the end had me tearing up.
YES! I took Belafonte's passing the hardest, only a year after his best friend.😢
This will always be the quintessential In Memoriam
Well done, TCM! Rest well, you legends.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS……hurts my throat to see my cinema family remembered. With their work they give their hearts. ❤️. Thank you.
So powerful... wasn't aware Linda Haynes (Rolling Thunder), Murray Melvin (Barry Lyndon), or Miiko Taka (Sayonara) are gone. Maybe it didn't make headline news but their images are burned in my brain cells, along with others.
TCM always do these tributes so respectfully! Well done! Michael Gambon (Dumbledore) and Harry Belafonte just made me tear up! Everyone noted were spectacular in their fields!
Wonderful, dream-like tribute to those whose careers and lives enhanced our enjoyment of life before they left us! Excellent choice of music, special effects and selection of quotes. Kudos to the creators and editors. To AJ and Christina Perri, that might be the best cover of Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly".
I’m always moved beyond belief at TCMs annual tribute. The music is always spot on and adds to how moving the tribute is.
This has to be the best TCM Remembers in this decade. The cover track picked, the addition of aerial dance, audio bits used... 😭
This breaks my heart. David McCallum, Gina Lolabridgeda, Melinda Dillon from "A Christmas Story", others. The black woman, Lea Garcia, looks like the woman who played the cousin of Eurydice in the film "Black Orpheus". I kust googled and yes, it's her.
That man on the curtain was totally amazing too.
Gone, but not forgotten
This is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST “Celebration of Life” tributes I’ve ever viewed! Thank you for helping us all remember those who gave us the mental break we NEEDED, if only for a moment! ❤

Year after year, no one does this better than TCM. Lovely version of the song too -- and the aerialist was a beautiful idea.
It was well done, it always is well done. But there are days when I miss the old instrumental tune, it was pulling very hard on my heartstrings, and allowed the voices of the actors to be even stronger.

I appreciate that B movie director Bert I Gordon was included,& Ricou Browning as the creature from the Black Lagoon as well
Thank you for including Kenneth Anger, who will probably be ignored by the Oscars.
He’ll absolutely be ignored, even though he shouldn’t be. I remember reading somewhere that Scorpio Rising influenced how Martin Scorsese uses music in his films. And that’s just one example of Anger’s influence.
