How moonshiners led to the birth of the muscle car - (ft the abandoned North Wilkesboro Speedway)

- NASCAR and muscle cars are two cornerstones of American automotive culture, but where did the story of American muscle begin? We sent Mike Fernie to the stunning state of North Carolina to trace back the history of NASCAR and the American performance car, both of which spawned from thirsty Americans during the Prohibition Era.

Is it just me or did this vid just kind of end out of nowhere..
yep Hertz was out of sponsor money. So they had to cut it early.
@@KristoferOlsson Wait seriously? Lol why even post it then..
@@KristoferOlsson thats not how video sponsorships work
The video goes a bit like a NASCAR race: straight, straight, straight, left turn, straignt, left turn, straight, straight, straight, left turn, straight, left turn, etc, etc... and then CRASH!
So crazy, I literally drove past this track 45 minutes ago. I don't live near it but come to the area fairly regularly. It's very odd to think of how much history is there.
Ryan Hoffmann I drove by a couple weeks ago as well.....kinda ghostly sitting there!
Moonshining led to NASCAR, but the American muscle car was a boomer; it's roots were in WWII.
moonshine car is to moonlight as a alcohol gateway car.. while NASCAR may had some history... but yet again every marketing tend to related to something that never happen...
The boomers invented them while they were all balls deep at Woodstock on the moon with buzzed aldrin
This should be like 30 minutes long.
Hertz didn't want to pay for a full 30min.
SlapShoes could make a great video out of this.
And he has, he made a North Wilkie video.
Or 2
Just as the video is getting good, it stops ............
Last time I was this early, Jeremy got a high five from the Mayor after he called a tyre shop😂
Chop chop
If I crash I crash, if I die I die
Copperhead Roaaaaddddd
hmm we are missing Jeremy destroying a tire in 3 laps, then giving the mayor a high five, and blasting Steve Earle - Copperhead Road, in the tire shop.
and james getting lost on the oval with hammond buried in the wall in the background!
Asger Lysebjerg one of my favorite episodes
@@andrewlarose851 It is a great episode, but my two favorite Top Gear roadtrips are the one in Africa, in estate cars, and the other is in Albania, testing 2 luxory cars and Clarkson is in the Yugo.
The Camaro and Mustang were considered Pony cars. The Dodge Charger was a muscle car as well as the Roadrunner, Satellite, Impala SS.
Isn't this the track featured in an old top gear episode with the sls, a 911 and an aston, i think
That new Camaro is a huge step back look-wise
The story about Musclecars, Moonshiners and Stockcar racing is one of my favorite all-American stories. I don't think it has been done justice here though.
I agree, there's so much to the history of NASCAR that this video didn't even come close to. The Mustang was designed for secretaries. They approached Mr Shelby to go road racing. NASCAR used big body cars such as the Galaxy and Talledega mostly.
Just visited the old track two weeks ago. You must have permission to enter but be careful as the grand stands and buildings are crumbling. Savethespeedway.net
I'd love to hear the story of the Canadian moonshine runners in the Rockies - using McLaughlin automobiles fitted with Buick engines IIRC. McLaughlin/GM Canada is a fascinating story, well worthy of the Drivetribe treament.
Gave something to look up!
“Using stills like these” lmao, if those are stills, you are Jeremy Clarkson
We need more competitive LEGO building with James and Richard! And of course definietly not vodka.
Flash Forward to 2023 and North Wilkesboro is hosting the All-Star race.
Born in Wilkesboro, and lived there for 14 years. While I love where I live in the middle of the state, I miss the mountains now and then
Enjoyed the video, but early on it was suggested that Wilkesboro was in the "Deep South". It's in Appalachia, which is definitely in no way the "Deep South". Moonshiners, banjo-pickers, er, *mountains*? None of these things exist in the Deep South. "Hillbillies" was a term deployed largely by the denizens of the lowland South (think plantations and Gone with the Wind, etc etc.) as a term of derision for the inhabitants of the upland South (think Dukes of Hazard, Justified, etc etc.) May seem like I'm picking nits, but I'd imagine it's much like suggesting that Leeds or York is in Scotland.
You guys really need to get in contact with Cleetus McFarland from UA-cam ASAP. He just bought a an abandoned speedway, and is starting a powerhouse production movement we haven't seen since the days of Top Gear. Unchained testosterone and Freedom.
Just interview Richard Petty. He can tell you all about it.
Any relation to Tom Petty (RIP)?
@@phantomechelon3628 haha no.
Richard Petty is the King of NASCAR and the Petty dynasty in the US.
Tom Petty is of no relation. Only remote relation is their respective massive amounts of talent.
People used to rent the hertz mustangs, swap the motors and suspension into regular mustangs and return them. They also used to put in roll cages and other requirements to race them, cut the cages out, and then return the car.
OK, this just became an ad channel.
Because they partnered up with Hertz for this? Fucking hell mate, calm down..
Always has been
last time i was this early james may was eating sandwiches in the 70s
The important question is: Can you get tires for the SLS there nowadays?
I’d love to see some more long form content, around the 20min mark? Bit in the style of Car Throttle.
Was this the video, or a teaser for the video?
Even if you don't like NASCAR, go to a race if you ever get the chance. For sheer insanity, the Indi 500 can't be beat. You and 257,000 (yes, a quarter of a million) of your closest friends drinking beer and having a great time.
For an experience that is more like a European soccer match, the Bristol night race every August is surreal. The world's fastest half-mile under the lights is unlike anything else except maybe the 24 hours of LeMans.
Miss that track being open, drive by it quite often still and grew up just a few miles away from it. Don't care for NASCAR these days though, was entertaining when you could buy the cars that they drove.
After the ‘22 revival announcement, this should be called: ‘How moonshiners led to the birth of the muscle car - (ft North Wilkesboro Speedway)’. Otherwise, NWS is back!!!
Thanks for another excellent video.
I think Bonnie and Clyde would have something to say about this.
i kinda wish this was hammond
How did that become a Hertz commercial in the middle?
Oh wait! They sponsored it.
Great. Really loved that cooperation
This video stopped as fast as a muscle car hitting the wall at the first turn...
You guys should ask Amazon to give a car show to Mike!
did you rent all of those cars at the airport
I love the renewed interest in north wilksboro! These supposed to be a grass roots movement to get the track restored and to start having races out there again
Can't get the purpose of the video, it's 2 short...
Its an advertisement for Hertz
Forgot to point out, they did tune their cars to be faster than police but after prohibition they decided to race their stock tuned cars in competition to see who has the fasted tuned far. Hence NASCAR (National Association of Stock car auto racing)
Man, even with the BowToe being on that weird black strip thing, the new Camaro design has really grown on me.
Was this a Chevy Nascar team ad?
literally none of those cars are Muscle Cars
they are all classified as Pony Cars
I don't think any modern car has classic potential. Electronic bath tub effect.
6.2 ltr convertible, nice
How did the moonshiners soup up their cars? What sort of cars were used?
First modifications were the installation of a much larger radiator as the early moonshine motors were prone to overheating, the cops chasing them took a while to catch on to this upgrade, their cars usually expiring in clouds of steam during a chase, after that anything to make them go faster ,then probably bragging rights as to who had the fastest wheels, then I suppose the organised racing.
Moonshiners also gave birth to all their Cousins, brothers and sisters.
And you should thank your Mom and Dad for keeping that very tradition alive.
@@jollyjakelovell4787 hahahaha
@@ryansegraves4015 Thanks Ryan
Why did you get a challenger r/t? Should have been a srt 392
The SRT didn't exist when the Challenger was launched in 1970. The R/T did
RIP Viper.
I wonder if these NASCAR tracks will be open to the public. Probably not.
hang on, the first GP race was held in turin, not the first f1 race. there is a difference between f1 and GP and f1 only took on the GP badge because GP was already well established as a racing term.
Can’t really watch it without James May being in the video, sorry guys but it’s just the way I feel 😢😢
As a NC native and still living here, I declare “Yeeee-hawwwww!”
Take your shirt off and swirl it around like a helicopter! Wayne County native!
just learned that NASCAR stands for North American Stock Car Auto Racing
Visited this town yesterday, the track is looking a right mess
While you’re in Western NC, should’ve hit the Dragon Tail... just a little ways from the track. You’d’ve loved it.
cheers !
hell yea brother.
It kills me that the car community hasn't banded together to pool resources. Buy this speedway. Then open it to literally any car event that wants to play there. We have to people, the interest, the resources... We just need to unite and make it happen
what is the music in the background?
This should have been at least 10 minutes
Flame Beats I just feel like they didn’t show the history or the cars very well. I was hoping for more substance
who are these random people?
why is the challenger like the one in vanishing point
I understand why they didn't do this with the trio
Look at those rental cars 🤩
European cornering and USA goes straight, both kind of sportcars are nice, cool and dreaming.
love the accent man !
Do you? I'm Scottish and hate his accent.
It's that "I'm a spoiled middle class Glaswegian who went to university and had 5 star accommodation and loads of money to buy me and my friends loads of things"
It's a horrid accent.
Why didn't they do a second cut when he added a "d" at the end of Demon?
I live 30 minutes away from there!
THEWILLEXPERIENCE I’m pretty close myself. Howdy neighbor.
You guys surely didnt go all the way to the USA to only show us this clip. is it fair to say that there is some cool content comming soon??
btw why is this vid so short?
You got enough power to the rear wheels and know how to drive it will turn on a dime.
>talks about muscle cars
>doesn't actually go fast in them
Wtf kind of crap is this
The Camaro is no longer a mussel car and neither is the mustang because yes they do have loads of power but they actually handle good. The Dodge Challenger and chargers are the only pure breed muscle cars left.
Nice ad 👍
Its a pretty cool story how it came about.
Not being from the US is anyone able to explain why the tracks are mainly ovals?
Becauasse American cars suck and cannot handle proper race tracks
Ain't no replacement for displacement.
What is going on with your audio?!
There's a muscle car named "Kamaru"???
Felt like less than half a video to me!!
There is nothing more exciting than watching a car going in circles. (tongue in cheek) Americans can only race in two directions circular or straight line.
I dare GM to make another Trans Am .. see how many of those they sell
Amazing keep goin
Wasnt f1 race started back in 1950...at Silverstone???..... Someone explain plz...
Neat film, although the creation of NASCAR and the Muscle Car are two different stories. But, I digress. Go watch the old...and better...Top Gear of Season 18, episode 2. In that film Richard Hammond gives a proper history lesson on NASCAR and gets to drive a Stock Car.

NC isn’t the ‘deep south’ it’s the south east. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are the Deep South.
Nice niche
Brits: whas so ehppealing bout goin round en cirkulls?
The Camaro and Mustang are Pony cars, not muscle cars.
I think you missed the mark in your argument. Though this is clearly a paid advertisement for Hertz, you could have at least wrote a script that passes the sniff test. Your jump from the Olds 88 to muscle cars by them both being "performance" oriented is a contrived argument. If you applied the same logic you could argue that the Bugatti Veyron is a spiritual descendant of the Olds 88, and therefore, NASCAR.
Wow. I've never heard so many half-truths knitted together to appear factual. Camaros and Mustangs weren't/aren't muscle cars and had zero to do with NASCAR until about 3 years ago. I'm insulted that they think this can be passed off as true for the sake of an ad. Shame on Hertz and DriveTribe.
Camaro is "The looker?" Oh my. It's a convertible and has the most "high tech", modern look of the three. The Challenger is obviously "The looker". If you're after a muscle car - it should look like a muscle car.
Camero Kahm air oh
ummm, that was a good intro to ???
Hmm.... Hotrodding is not the same thing as the birth of the muscle car lol
High Street = Main Street.
The Mustang is not a muscle cat tho
Will somebody please inform the UK how to pronounce "Camero".....
"Revenuers" and Alcohol Tax Stamp is downright un-American.
