Swap out all the old parts, refresh everything to factory new, then what is he? Just another old Kadet. Keep him in working order, but don't ultimately replace what he is.

Most definitely this little guy deserves a factory correct restoration. He served you well and anything other than factory in my eyes would be an insult to his plucky spirit. I gotta say whenever I see Oliver or hear him mentioned it always brings a smile to my face. I don't think any other car ever on "Top what was it's name?" caught my attention as much as this car did.

Think about the bmw and he Mercedes that had all their parts stripped to make them as light as possible but still kept getting bogged down whilst this plucky little thing just kept on going

this story is honestly incredible. he fell in love with a little opel kadett and shipped him home. When oliver got stuck in the water Richard looked scared. Im glad he's had him this long :)
The car weighs 1500lbs wet. Drum brakes are perfectly fine for normal driving with a weight that low. Upgrading to modern disc brakes aren't going to be large gains. The brakes back then were never the problem for the plucky little under-powered lightweights, the problem was the problem of all 1960s cars. Tires. They weren't brake limited, they were grip limited. The downside of drums is heat, they dissipate it badly and grenade under heavy heat load. For a daily driver they are perfectly fine. Upgrade the tires to a modern compound and call it a day, it'll actually improve brake fade. Less time braking means less heat buildup from load so the brakes will last longer.

Totally in agreement. Changing the look of the car, customization or rally look will basically eliminate 'Oliver'. It does not have to be restored to factory condition, but just fixing the bits that need fixing will keep 'Oliver' for years to come. It is a car of its own, it does not need to be fancy or trendy, it's Oliver! Oliver who drove on terrible roads in Africa and swam rivers. It is an icon on itself.
Oliver is a little warrior who fought through Africa. A Retro Rally Car is perfect for him. But leave the bullet hole, For character and water drainage. Or just give him his own show.
If ihe ain't broke... simply enjoy him. Maybe just keep his fluids and internals happy so everyone can dream with you as you tell us more of Oliver's travels! A Dyno might a be hilarious lead-in for a future challenge...
Restore Oliver to his ‘Botswana Fresh’ condition, meaning, don’t go overboard, but rather get the major stuff done, and then for the smaller details like the mirrors and trim, a but of spit and polish will do. This will keep him looking unique and personal, rather than just another restored museum piece kadet
I think it would celebrate the journey more as a retro rally car though no? Keep the same colour and most of the exterior but make Oliver the car he always knew he was - a plucky off roader.
I have to say that Oliver was the best purchase of any the car challenge shows. His performance was incredibly surprising and I found myself rooting for the little Opel throughout the episode. I’d say he’s earned a factory fresh redo. Happy to see he’s still around 👍
The greatest car he has ever owned in history bar none, and it never failed him not once especially when Oliver endured the African salt flats like they were nothing

Restore Oliver, give him the love and affection he deserves. Some thing needs to stay as original as posible, and Oliver is one of them.
That little Opel was just magnificent!
Keep him original, as much as it may be "boring" it's iconic and if he is anything other than pale yellow it won't be the same
I think it would celebrate the journey more as a retro rally car though no? Keep the same colour and most of the exterior but make Oliver the car he always knew he was - a plucky off roader.
OEM resto but keep the minilites and modern tyres

I have to say that Oliver was the best purchase of any the car challenge shows. His performance was incredibly surprising and I found myself rooting for the little Opel throughout the episode. I’d say he’s earned a factory fresh redo. Happy to see he’s still around 👍
The greatest car he has ever owned in history bar none, and it never failed him not once especially when Oliver endured the African salt flats like they were nothing
