      You did a great job at understanding why fans have a connection to the track. I'm guessing you might have watched a race or two growing up as many creators would not have been able to understand the significance or nostalgia. I re watched this after your recent update and its pretty amazing to see/imagine the track making it back...as you said, must structures featured in this series will never be resurrected.

      You do realize Trump bought a couple segregated country clubs in florida back in the 80's and opened them to everyone after living in florida for awhile and discovering that they existed. He was praised by black leaders and he did similar things in new york. He wasn't called racist til he ran for president and it became a efficient way to further divide the country. I disagree with a lot of his tyrannical policies like renewing the NDAA but racist, i think its just propaganda to get left leaning Marxist punks all riled up.

    I was moved to Charlotte in 1964 when my father scored a job with Columbia Car Corp. They provided golf carts to the Charlotte Motor speedway at no charge. This was why I was able to see races there in the 1960's for free. Fast forward to the 1990's when I had become a NASCAR JUNKIE, and I discovered it's short tracks. This was now my favorite track in NASCAR for all the reasons you mentioned. What you failed to mention was the fact that the GREED of NASCAR and Speedway motorsports is the only reason that this track died. As it turned out the 1990's was the peak of NASCAR. Speedway and NASCAR decided to expand into major markets outside the south and build massive speedway's to tap into their perceived revenue streams. The only problem was that there were no more race dates avaible. So SMS, and their counterparts bought the short tracks in order to transfer their race dates to these new super speedway's. This is where the France family and the Smith family screwed up. This was the beginning of NASCAR's decline, it's abandonment of it's southern roots and fan base, directly contributed to the sorry state of NASCAR today.

      @Jolene That that spanking new mega-track in Dallas ended up costing those NASCAR whores a lot of money, as they had to re-do portions of the track the first two years, because the surfaces sucked. Wilksboro was such a cool track, and yet I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened to Martinsville, (another of my favorite tracks).

      @@bw-leftturnracing7779 2005 was the peak of the housing bubble so that’s not so surprising, also attendance/viewership doesn’t necessarily reflect true popularity if the difference between the 90’s and 2005 is a temporary sugar high sitting on top of its actual peak in sustainable popularity.
      But NASCAR based their future on that 2005 sugar high, and the results were easy to predict. The bottom fell out without a strong foundation.

    • @SirBlackReeds
      @SirBlackReeds 6 років тому +2

      The production quality isn't that great. It's as good as you can get for the type of series this is, but it's mostly images and graphics with pre-recorded video feed and narration. You could make this sort of thing in Windows Movie Maker. Granted I wouldn't recommend that program for making this sort of thing, but you get my point: the production quality isn't the truly impressive part. It's the amount of research that goes into this.

    • @Mr.Everything
      @Mr.Everything 6 років тому +2

      It’s not a cancerous reality show, low brow hipster comedy, or fake news so I don’t see it succeeding on television.

    • @DougLAnderson
      @DougLAnderson 6 років тому +1

      I half agree. The production quality isn't up to par with something that would actually air on TV. On the other hand, I think that the only significant thing preventing that is the intro and outro. "Hey, what's up guys" makes it feel cheaper and UA-cam-y, as does "follow on [social media]" at the end. I'd even go a step further and say that the ending could probably be the same, but the intro feels like a vlog.
      I don't think the pre-recorded video, images, or narration hold back the quality of it at all. I think with a bigger budget and access to more archival footage it would feel more like a Ken Burns doc than a video essay. The research and writing is definitely already up to TV quality.
      Of all the "shows" on UA-cam, ABANDONED is one of the very few that I feel would actually make an excellent TV show. I imagine it feeling like HOW IT'S MADE but with a modern history spin. These videos are already so close to being that.

      IIRC, NASCAR almost dropped Darlington from the schedule completely, but the drivers, owners, and fans howled very loudly, and Darlington went through some changes, schedule and physical, on the way to being the throwback track event it is now. IIRC, North Wilkesboro was collateral damage because NASCAR would only run at one track that was losing money, and the general consensus was Darlington was easier to upgrade.

      I hope you don’t mind if I ask another question: Do you hear Manx being spoken in your daily life? I know the last native speaker passed away in 1974, but I’ve read that use of the language is encouraged by the island’s government and/or other groups/associations.

      Agreed on what you say Mike-However, without being "emotionally invested" as a fan rooting for a particular driver, its hard for me to continue to spend the $400 I spent a year on a pair of seats for the Firecracker/Pepsi/Coke Zero 400 summer race at Daytona. I have had Tower seats in the Winston/Sprint/Section 450 tower since 1992 and this is the first time since that first race in 1992 that I did not renew my summer race seats. I was/am a Dale Earnhardt Sr & Jr fan-and now without either of them in the field racing anymore there just is NOT anyone I could spend that kind of $$ to watch race. They have become so desperate to sell tickets that they now have telemarketers calling and trying to sell ME tickets. It used to be that you had to call THEM at least a year a head of time to even be able to successfully BUY tickets as this race would ALWAYS sell-out. The 3 sales people I have spoken to have told me that I am not the only one who feels as I do. That MANY race fans have dropped their tickets for the same reason.....I will continue to state: NASCAR R.I.P. 1948-2017....

      It can be fun to watch on television again with the new rules there are a lot of different strategies being used and drivers racing hard for stage points. I can understand old fans finding it difficult to get emotionally invested post Dale Jr but I would say that new fans are being brought in at the moment. Its becoming a young man's sport and therefore you need to follow it on social media and the website/youtube channels in order get all of the drama and action. The fox radioactive race recap series has made it easier to digest all of the races drama and communications/interactions that happen during the race. With all of this transparency it is easy to pick new drivers to support.
      In my opinion if you were a Junior fan I would recommend you just root for all of his associated drivers from Hendricks and Junior Motorsports. They are dominating Xfinity series at the moment and are now getting drivers up on the monster energy series who will compete Chase Elliot, Alex Bowman, and William Byron. Also if you liked Dale Sr then Austin Dillon is his grandson and just won the 500, and he races for Richard Childress just like Dale Sr. Just my opinion. All sports evolve, and I enjoy the races now more than in the late 00's/early 10's. The online presence also helps keep me engaged.

    Bit of an update on NWS- Earlier today, former Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced on twitter that he wanted to find a cleanup crew for the track so it can be scanned and preserved into iRacing, a racing simulator.
    Also, earlier this year, A resolution was adopted earlier this year for a possible redevelopment of the track, which includes bringing racing back. It'll probably be a few years before anything major happens, but the track could very well be saved after all.
    With the way things are going, we very well may see tracks like NWS return in 2021 with the schedule realignment. NWS itself won't be ready by any means, but Nascar is looking to add more short tracks. Nashville Fairgrounds speedway, another former track, is undergoing a multimillion dollar renovation to attempt to attract a date in 2021, with support from Bristol Motor speedway, an active track. If Nashville fairgrounds can attract a date, have it be successful, and short tracks as a whole keep the fanbase they currently have, then North Wilkesboro would make for a perfect addition should it ever be restored.

      At least make it a dirt track, at very least. I was younger back then but I remember seeing on TV and if course in days of thunder. this video made me sad. can't ever go wrong with the the og's, classics, or originals whichever you prefer how said. How crazy would it be to fix it and be added to playoff tracks (could eliminate one of the tracks that are already on the schedule). Keep it the way it was just with today's building techniques just to make sure when built will last. just do it like how they do a lot of the classic baseball stadiums. Keep original idea and design. So what if you can't fit a 100,000 people. That's fine if tickets are harder to come by it will make it that much more exciting and pristine if not everyone could go every year. That's ok. Don't need elbows to assholes, (sorry had to) at every event you go to. I hope Dale gets it going. I was lucky enough to meet him out here in Cali at fontana (Dale I got it it off that golf cart by autograph alley, thanks again, you got swarmed and I wasn't going to fight people so I stepped to the side.)and I will never forget. And keep the hat I have signed in my room. Not wearing that out. No way. Keepsake. Not selling either. Sorry you all. Its mine. Nascar does need to get back to its roots. A lil to corporate but that happens with everything now days. Does that mean I'll stop watching. Not a chance. By the way go chase. Get it boy. Let's be in it when we get to homestead. peace. don't forget to kick the tires and light the fires. nothing like seeing in person. Better than any sport to watch live. Any. Hands down. I am from nc and i remember when they started abandoning some of the older nascar tracks.they started abandonding around the mid 90's and early 2000. To bad i am sure there are a lot of memories for a lot of people.

    So sad, I grew watching North Wilkesboro. It was one of the few smaller tracks I always loved. Had that Speedway feel to it. It and Rockingham always were fun. They made NASCAR, NASCAR. Now just like these old classic tracks, NASCAR seems to be fading into the sunset. When I see all these races and so many tracks half empty, I can’t help but wonder what were they thinking. Chasing dollars and young fans who aren’t there. My children or grandchildren have no desire to watch or go to racing. I don’t watch nearly as much as we did in the mideightys and into the early part of this century. They’ve taken the NASCAR out of NASCAR. I don’t think it will ever recover. You’ll be doing more of these I think, sadly. Very good job.

    Love your work Jake. Your videos are so well put together and entertaining, I could watch them many times over. I'm sure that you are swamped with ideas for new episodes, but if you find the time could you do a video on the Mid Cities Mall in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It was one of the first malls in the area and even though it has been torn down, it had a unique history. Especially the seagull infestation. I used to shop at this mall as a kid and I would be interested in seeing your take on it's history. Also, if you want to do another ghost track video, there is the Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, GA. It opened in the Sixties and had some interesting events, a record breaking run by Richard Petty, a moonshine still under turn three and hosted the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival. Again, thanks for all your hard work and I look forward to the next video.

    3:59 Growing up in the 80's was so much fun. How close do you think a fan is allowed to get to the fence in a modern nascar race? Now, look at the kid holding the fence in turn 1.

    They could make it a museum of sorts with tours, while renting the track itself to a company that sells people laps in race cars. They could hold concerts, festivals, fairs, car shows, and all kinds of stuff there.

    This was one of my favorite tracks. When they stopped racing there NASCAR was never the same.

    I passed the racetrack recently when I visited my sister's new home. I thought Wilkesboro, isn't that where a NASCAR track is, and then I see it. That also happened to me in Daytona probably 20 years ago. I was at a gas station in Daytona and was wondering where the track was, and it was across the street. LOL.

    Been there 3 times back when NASCAR ran there. Great memories for a kid. Sad to see it falling apart like this. I don't watch NASCAR anymore, not what it used to be.

    Wonderful episode Jake! I’ve never once been interested in car racing but your research and video production make it so good and worthwhile. Plus we gotta love your cheeky comments like “They renamed it to the very catchy ‘The Historic North Wilkesboro Speeway Presented By Goodyear” 😂😂. Love ya. Keep it up.
