  • Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.
The humble bicycle occupied a special place among working class Indians for decades especially because it was cost-effective and utilitarian. Modernisation introduced faster modes of transportation and bicycles were sidelined. But in the last few years, with increasing traffic congestion and pollution, many cities in India introduced private pay-as-you-go bikes. This week, we visit Ahmedabad to understand how they fit into the city’s mobility plan.

In the winters it can go down to 0 degrees but it doesnr happen that often and in summers the average is around 20. And of course the land is very flat so biking is ideal. I am a dutch born indian but to be honest. Biking culture will not succeed in India. In chandigarh the government has start the Smart Bike project which works just like the one in Ahmedabad and many people have started using this facility. It is refreshing to see these red bikes on roads. This is a good initiative. However there is a problem with these bicycles not being charged most of the times. I have used smart bike two times and both times the bicycles were not charged.

What makes you think that trees are some amazing thing which solves all the problems. And besides that to answer your question, they had planted trees but they haven't grown as much as they would have liked because they were stupid enough to forget to remove debris before planting trees. And the concrete is there to safeguard buildings from floods. Walls existed even before making this riverfront.

Better Public transport and proper road segregation is a must. The roads arent systematically engineered in India and people dont know proper traffic rules. Thats why its chaos in Indian cities. Vehicle ownership in and population density in india is a lot lower than in the netherlands. But in The netherlands there is a lot better traffic management and rules are stricter implied. Indian cities can learn from dutch engineers and rulemakers

the most imortant part of makin the my bike system successful will be to built a network of bike lanes through the city which is not present right now if it is built (which takes much less money to make than a elevated road or adding more lanes to existing roads which do not reduce traffic and infact increase traffic due to induced demand)
