Functioning toilets are more than a convenience: they are vital to public health. About a quarter of India’s population lives without regular access to sanitary facilities. One social enterprise is working to change that, with smart public toilets that improve hygiene and restore dignity to the urban poor.

Yes. Being poor is not the reason to not having a toilet. Back in the early 80s, my family moved from the city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to living in a small village. The 1st time my father did - built a toilet before the house even completed. We were living simple and many of the villagers were poor but we had toilets in our houses! It's the very BASIC thing
You're absolutely right, take a look at plenty of videos of UA-cam and Facebook you'll see how Indian food vendors prepare in a filthiest and the most unhygienic manner. They don't even wash their hands. It's their culture and mentality, there are plenty of countries poorer than India but maintain sanitation and hygiene

1) India is a wonderful country!
2) By far the cleanest country in the world.
3) Rape is almost nonexistent
4) Corruption is even lower than Scandinavian countries.
5) Street food is the most delicious and safest to eat in all of euroasia. (Yes Asia and Europe are the same continent.)
6) The streets in all India are very quiet and pleasant.
7) English speaking countries are jealous of our accent especially Americans.
8) Indian English sounds identical to British English and Indians do not sound like they have a hot dog in their mouth when they're speaking it.
9) The water from the Yamuna river is safe to drink and tasty
10) The U.K stole 58 trillion in USD dollars. If not India would've invented lots of advanced technology and become the richest country in the world if it wouldn't of had been colonized by that tiny island.
11) Everyone in the western world dreams about living in India. The world is jealous of us. Be proud of who you are!

Imagine that young men and women are willing to pay 5 Rs multiple times each week just to have access to a clean bathroom. This is failure of the govt- what are they spending tax money on? Proper sanitation is a necessity and a human right.
I understand but I do believe that spending an amount can increase responsibility. Tbh the taxpayers in India are limited to a very limited proportion and sustaining such a large country on that is not possible. When you pay a small amount you would be using it properly and I hope that could be an incentive for cleaners to clean it daily.
I also do hope that this could reduce the losses sustained by the government due to vandalism (forget slums, I live in a tier two city and people stole bikes, vertical garden pots, throw garbage in properly maintained parks when there is a garbage just nearby! )
The government provides nearly 1.2 billion Indians with sanitary pads & toilets becoz theyre too lazy to build their own toilets & prefer to shit on top of their crop fields.
People would urinate beside the toilet to save that 5 rupees.
There are few people who would pay for toilet.
We got cash for space programme but not for a toilet..and blame other countries all the time for our misery..

Modernizing India is going to be a big economic and political challenge. Before modernizing infrastructure the mind of the populace need to be modernized. Technological interventions like this can increase the pace for sure. This needs to be implemented at scale at all public places. Just imagine how much a self managing robust infrastructure like this on all bus, railways and metro stations can improve the usage of public transport. India's solution to it's mobility problems lies in public transportation not personal vehicles and this is a must before it can be realized.

Excellent update on a major public health issue! Easy for the gov't to claim large numbers of toilets built, but then they lay costs and effort of maintenance and repair on the already impoverished communities supposedly being served.

male and female community toilets should be separately located and local women SHG should be given the O&M with 1yr hand holding amount by local municipality in JV with Sulab like organizations with revenue generation using vermicomposting making from 50% cowdung and 50% mix of human urine and feaces, organic kitchen waste, food waste, etc. with assured sale of 2/3rd vermicompost produced to local district horticulture maintained gardens and nurseries. Recycled water from local municipality run STP plants can be supplied for refilling the overhead tanks of community toilets

I saw another video in which they compared Chinese cities to Indian ones on why the Chinese ones were better. One thing to note is that the Chinese think of implementing a whole system of municipality before allowing developers to construct their buildings. Here in India it seems that the planners and developers are not corrdinating between one another and the govt just lets the builders build near a village without any implementation of sewers or roads. There is a mindset that needs to be changed.
Also when looking at all this, rather than building a few toilets we may need to look at a big picture of how to develop this area as a whole so that its not just the lubricating issues that will be resolved but the whole area will be infrastrucrely upgraded to be more developed hence peoples lives being better.
These problems are still there in some apets of india, with most of parts made open defecation free ,the govt is trying best ,but its not easy to devlop fast thses slumps

In rural areas almost all people have toilet but they don't use it. Everyday I travel 15-20 kilometers for work and I regularly see them going out to do their business in the morning when I pass through the village. I asked some villagers like why they do it outside if they have toilet in their home? Some people say they don't feel refreshed unless they do it in the open and some say they have a small spetic tank so their women use it especially at night time when needed. They don't want it to get filled quickly. Public toilets are poorly maintained. People throw all sorts of things into it like plastic bag that cause clogging.
This gives me hope. I hope scroll talks more about social issues instead of political agendas.
