    My Dream Director for a Bioshock film would be Guillermo Del Toro.
    Watch the beginning scene of Shape of Water and tell me it doesn't look like Rapture.

      Del Toro would be good to make the Splicers costumes. Just take a look at the demons in the Hellboy movies, they almost SCREAM Splicers. I don't think he'd be a good idea for bringing Big Daddies to life though. Maybe leave that to Zach Snyder (in the same vein as Sucker Punch) or something.

    They'll fuck it up. Netflix fucks EVERYTHING up; they focus on all the wrong things. The sets will look perfect, background will be filled with visually accurate details and easter eggs to say "LOOK WE'RE SOOO FAITHFUL" while the plot is mangled, lore completely changed, and characters woefully miscast or drastically and unrecognizeably changed. And the pacing will be absolutely godawful. Netflix shows are not designed to be GOOD, they're designed to keep you binge watching. They have no concept of pacing or narrative flow, they just feel like all of the narrative peaks and valleys got put into a blender, made into a homogeneous goo, squeezed out of a tube, and chopped into evenly timed chunks. You can't even call them "episodes".

      I'm really surprised with the high number of people and comments denoting people with high hopes and great expectations for it.
      It sounds incredibly obvious to me that it will be horribly botched and mismanaged, yet I read here about a lot of people actually believing Netflix can and *will* do a good job, and even defending their usually bad practices.
      I guess not everyone will ever have the same opinion.

    I'm still really blown away by there being actually fans of Bioshock still out there. I adore these games immensely and BRAVO to any soul out there who actually knows a hair about the perfect DLC Gem called Minerva's Den. The points here are so on the mark, I don't you could have made a better list. Rapture remains that perfect game environment where you can all a decaying city, old timey music, ghosts, some bits of haunted beauty and it all just works. As you said yourself, anyone out there would KILL to have all of this already when they start crafting up a film.
    Whether anything happens with Bioshock is always that, "time will tell," mentality. But credit to you making such a genuinely perfect video to note the good/bad/notable when it comes to making a film that can work and hit the ground. Also, thank you endlessly on mentioning about needing to focus on the movie itself and not the 1000x projects that "could" come despite the movie being still made. *shudders in thought about the Universal Studios Monster Universe*
    PS - The videos seriously needs a ton more praise. From an old Bioshock fan, keep on keeping being the one that chooses the impossible. *Electro-Bolt high fives*

    Main problem with adapting this game: people familiar with it already know the two big twists. This isn't insurmountable. Captain America: The Winter Soldier remains Marvel's best solo film despite most comic fans knowing the twist, because the film added new twists. A Bioshock film would need to do the same. But I can't imagine what that new twist would be.

    • @davecolumbo
      @davecolumbo  Рік тому +26

      Agreed. I like the way comic book movies offer a slight variation or additional hook for people who think they know the source material. Honestly though? Even if it is just the twist from the games, it would be worth it to me Just to watch a whole audience experience it that never would have bothered to play the games. AKA, I'd love my wife to suddenly love the franchise and I can tell her I liked it before it was cool :)

      I think we should have an aftermath of Bioshock two (a city in ruin) with flash backs of masquerades and story behind it, then at the end we find out Andrew Ryan is still alive like the whole Fontaine atlas thing and hes been narrating. Then it shows him drawing up new plans??!!

    • @Commanderziff
      @Commanderziff Рік тому +7

      I consider the twists the least important part of the Bioshock story. I think the most important part is the setting, the atmosphere, the unfolding tale of Raptures's fall as we make our way through it's still twitching corpse.

    156% agree with you on this list. Having some live locations instead of a green screen helps the actors connect better with their roles. Plenty of places have that Art Deco look too.
    I don't mind very subtle hints about contents from the other two games such as being able to hear Songbird screaming underwater in the first game in the distance, just as long as they don't become too involved in the plot where Elizabeth or Booker gets a whole scene or role.
    It's imperative to have the original soundtrack for introducing Rapture.

    I'll argue that if it's adapting the first game they should probably give Jack a companion or two. I feel like following one person and rarely seeing the other main characters might not translate well to a movie. My suggestion is Johnny (The guy killed at the start) stays around for a bit longer before Atlas tags along with our hero in person. Halfway through Tenenbaum replaces Atlas as Jack's primary companion like she does over the radio in the game. Other things I'd include would be flashbacks taken from the Rapture novel and the characters listening to diaries much like the source material. As unthinkable as it sounds I think giving Jack an actual personality is probably the hardest thing when it comes to making this work as pure viewing experience. A silent protagonist doesn't cut in in a movie like this. I'd double down on him being an "average joe" caught up in this chaos. He'll try talking first before resorting to violence and is surprised he's so skilled at combat. All he really wants is to just return to his family on the surface and be done with it, telling stories of his parents and cousins to his companions and why they're so important to him. The inevitable reveal shatters him and would need some serious talking to in order to get back on track. Jack would be at first scared and a bit whiney. He become a bit cocky after getting more guns and plasmids but is then humbled by the twist, turning into a man who just wants freedom. Preferably this follows the "good" path and Jack will rescue and feel kinship with the Little Sisters. Maybe have a splicer harvest one as warning to Jack that Rapture is truly rotten.

    I hated the dystopian genre until I played Bioshock. For me, it got everything right. What I loved the most about it was that it was fair to the subject it was criticizing. You hear Ryan's opening monologed and immediately you can see the dream behind the dystopia. Any pieces of work that gets to understand the tyrannical business millionaire is doing something extraordinary.

    • @davecolumbo
      @davecolumbo  10 місяців тому +1

      Great point. I love ehe complexity for the viewer to hear Ryan's monologue but also see the results of his folly, it's not a basic "WE WANT YOU TO FEEL THIS WAY" narrative and more a nuanced story unfolding. Right from the get go I was like "THIS IS GOING TO BE SPECIAL"

    Part of me would love to see a multi-season series that adapted the book Bioshock: Rapture; where it told the story of key figures within Rapture, the building and fall of the city and planting the seeds of the 1st game's story. It's like they took the stories posed by the audio diaries from the games and expanded on them to make a prequel that would answer the questions that weren't answered in the game.

THEN they can go and tell the story of how things came to be or tell parallel adventures. I think Bioshock: Infinite was unnerving in a DIFFERENT way than Bioshock 1. The difference being that Rapture was a city under the sea and Columbia is a city in the clouds. You are trapped in both cities, with no escape. Bioshock 1 was dark and gory. Bioshock: Infinite was unnerving like a horror movie with build-up from sunny to dark and gloomy.

I’ve played all of them multiple times including the DLC and I’m a huge collector but like I said infinite was the one where the story really blew me away. The thing with different protagonist, well it shows how each place handled the drugs differently but showed how each failed.

    I hope this movie is well made, I was sad to hear the results of when the first one was gonna be made, and I hope this one blows us away as much as our first trip to Rapture does. I still get chills when I see Rapture despite the fact I've played the game more than once. I mean, it's crazy that the setting of a game less grounded in reality (or many it's more grounded than we think) makes me feel more like I'm there than the more realistic setting of Night City from Cyberpunk 2077, that city does feel empty and lacking. I still love Cyberpunk 2077, but if I had to pick a game that makes me feel like I'm really there, it's Bioshock, the first one to be more Specific

    Honestly I think the best idea would be to avoid making the main protagonist of the game the focus of the movie. I think Tenenbaum and her struggle with the villains of BioShock would be more interesting and a better narrative. She's flawed, interesting, but also has character, plus in the game she's one of the main people pulling the strings.

  • @ScuzzMB
    @ScuzzMB 9 місяців тому +2

    Sorry I found this vid so late. Playing through the series again right now - I've known about this adaptation for a while. Still think it should be a limited 6-10 episode series and it should split time between laying the foundational backstory along with a current event story around the events of the first game. Jamming some kind of self-contained narrative around this rich world into a 1.5 to 2.5 hour project is just a recipe for shortchanging it...not to mention alienate any fresh viewers with no knowledge of what's going on in the games. As a gamer, maybe I can just enjoy the gameplay and not worry about everything behind the story (much of which you probably won't fully wrap your head around without multiple playthroughs), but as a viewer of a movie or program, I need something that pulls me into the world. Without the tangible interactivity of the game, this will need to have some foundational hook to ground the people new to Bioshock into this universe. Otherwise, it's destined to be a niche body horror oddity that won't satisfy fans of the games or anyone with no background in them.

    • @davecolumbo
      @davecolumbo  9 місяців тому

      You may be right. I know personally for me though, I've seen far more movies that nail an aesthetic than I have seen TV shows that do the same. Even expensive high end TV shows I feel like I can see the set, see the effects, and the padding a lot of shows do to extend things unnecessarily. I just think a good solid 2 hour movie that is self contained could make audiences beg for more, and then you can expand. So many of the best franchises of all time started with one standalone movie that teased a bigger world.

  • @Death_true

    Honestly I think it should be a show and since we know the story of Bioshock one and two are a separate universe from Infinite (the lighthouses) I would make the story a combination of all 3 things but still set in rapture. Instead of starting with Jack on the plane start with Andre Rianofski (Andrew Ryan) from fleeing his home country with his father as a child coming to America as an adult starting and losing his industry to the construction of Rapture the city at its peak and then its fall kind of like The Aviator if anyones ever scene that.

    I think a movie focusing on one central character (Jack) that stares into the darkness and picks up and listens to audiotapes occasionally would be pretty boring. The plot needs to be interesting, needs to go somewhere, and needs to have something to say. The game has actually a well lot to say, even if you take away Jack, all the gameplay, and even the plot twist (which pretty much all the people going to watch the movie probably know by now). I would really love however, if the movie would focus on the Fontaine/Ryan feud (since both have layered, interesting personalities), the smuggling operation, Ryan's punishments, with characters like Diane, Jasmine, Sander Cohen, or even dr Steinman getting more and more crazier. The utiopia turns into dystopia amidst a fast spreading addiction to Adam (it would also be interesting, if it turned out, Adam users only THINK they have superpowers), and we would see how a society built on an originally promising philosophy (objectivism) collapses, leading to the unavoidable destruction of the underwater city. That would be more thought provoking than wacthing a gamer pleasing lenghty fight where a big daddy going up in flames drills through a dozen splicers brutally. For the latter entertainment, just play the game? 🤷

    I can kinda see your vision for how the movie should be and I hope they do make the movie that way, even though I've yet to play all 3 games.
    I do, however, think that we as the audience should create and encourage filmmakers to use a list of practices, techniques and story beats we actually enjoy. Not all the time, but at least some of them, some of the time. Stuff like:
    -Practical effects form the minor stuff that's expensive to do in CG and looks shit.
    -Creating new characters instead of gender or race-swapping existing ones
    -No fast-cutting for every fight!
    That's all that comes to mind right now.

    The only way Netflix can make a good BioShock movie, is if they have the insight of mind to hand it off to someone else to do.

    I hope the protagonist is Jack and not a random dude/woman who's name is different, I know Jack doesn't talk, but you can give him a personality and also make him react to everything in his path

    • @tstdystopmotions

      Yeah, it wouldn’t make any sense for it to be a random dude or a woman who “happened” to be Ryan’s daughter
      It couldn’t be a gender-swap because when Jack turned himself into a Big Daddy it could never be a woman
      It couldn’t be a random dude because one of the MAIN twists is that Jack is Ryan’s son

    All it has to do is to follow the games philosophy of not treating the player like a complete troglodite & explore tough interesting questions not only about humanity at large but the people playing the game themselfs by giving choices..
    Totaly easy peasy & simple to convert into movie form

    I think the only thing that make this film/series work, is making Ken Levine and Paul Hellquist (and the rest of the lead workers, sorry i don't remember much people form irracional Games) be in the team of work and be the consultors for EVERYTHING.
    The last of us work basically for have the creators supervising the production.
    I image the reaction of producers: What? Consulting the creators made the show it mades work? HOW!!!!????
    P.D: Sorry for my bad english

    i feel like they cant make a more than average adaptation because of the best scene in the game is unadaptable in movie-tv format.
    the adaptation will end up being "ooh look at thing from game i understood that reference" like everything is nowadays

    I believe it will work cause of the written and the director cause Francis Lawrence made Constantine i am legend red sparrow slumberland water for elephants visually stunning and also some horror and as for the writer who wrote murder on the orient express Logan blade runner 2049 and alien covenant with this we have a visionary director with dark but stylish films and a writer that has wrote some deep interesting and outstanding films and a horror with the new film a haunting in Venice they are a good choice and they are sticking more to the game this will be an arcane or cup head or Witcher season 1 as the best Netflix is bad at making anime but games they have proven they can do it right
