I'd say your assessment is spot-on. It's a cool performance, but not their best song by a long shot. Peter Murphy has always been a very athletic performer and was a handsome gent back in his day.
White on white translucent black capes Back on the rack Bela Lugosi's dead The bats have left the bell tower The victims have been bled Red velvet lines the black box Bela Lugosi's dead Undead undead undead The virginal brides file past his tomb Strewn with time's dead flowers Bereft in deathly bloom Alone in a darkened room The count Bela Logosi's dead Undead undead undead
Bela Lugosi was mostly famous for his portrayal of Dracula. Peter Murphy is the singer. The bands heyday was the '80's and helped inspire the Goth scene. This song is more atmospheric tongue in cheek goth/pop.
They are old school gothic rock they were there in the begin of it all. they were one of the few gothic rock bands back in the 70s and 80s to start that genre. I'm surprised they are still around. Bela Lugosi was an actor who was famous for starting the Dracula craze back in the day and this song is essentially I guess in honor of him. It was them and groups like The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees as well as Joy Division to start the genre of gothic Rock back then.
I hesitate to call Bauhaus "goth", as there just weren't sub-generes back then. However, they were definitely the harbinger of things to come. I most definitely wouldn't call Joy Division goth at all. I absolutely detest that we feel the need to pigeon hole
@@darthrocker2849 Bauhaus were without doubt at the forefront of original 'Goth' scene/sound )I was a Goth in the early 80's, the Genre was there). Joy Division were noted as being the originators of the thereafter 'Gothic' sound (I would argue for The Doors). Both were PostPunk as it was, as was a large number of groups later categorised as Goth
I see people already told you who was Bela Lugosi. Well , as he used to play Dracula, and vampires are undead, so Lugosi is undead. He as an actor died, but as Dracula he will never die.
Bela Lugosi was a horror film actor in the 1930's. His life took a downside in the 50's when he was hooked on booze and moriphine. He died a pauper. And turned into a legend.
Bauhaus was one of the first bands I heard when I took interest in gloom and gothic rock, especially from England. This band, along with The Cure, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and others that gave me insight away from Disco and Rock that I was only hearing in South Florida at the time. I recommend listening to Peter Murphy's "Cuts You Up" and "Indigo Eyes".
Bauhaus were formed in Northampton, England, in 1978 and were a seminal band of the nascent Goth genre. Bela Lugosi’s Dead was their first single released on the 6th August 1979 and is considered the harbinger of gothic rock music and has been immensely influential on contemporary goth culture. The song draws on the imagined imagery around the death of the Hungarian actor Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956), known professionally as Bela Lugosi who started in the 1931 film “Dracula” (directed by Tod Browning ) and was a staple as the eponymous vampire in a number of films released by Universal Pictures throughout the 1930’s, hence the ‘chorus’ “Bela Lugosi’s dead…..undead……..undead”
I had no idea they played Coachella in 2005. I would have lost my f***in' mind! Peter is quite old ladies, this came out in the 70's. For him to be singing upside down, wow ❤
I was lucky enough to see them at this show at Coachella, I also caught them in 1997 at the Hollywood Paladium. They put on an amazing show at Coachella, the atmosphere was perfect, it was windy enough that the fog machines looked nice & creepy (those weren't fans blowing the smoke around). He also did a song from the top of the stage lights, about 40 feet up. The saddest part of the day was seeing all the Goths in the medical tent due to heat exhaustion, it was over 100 & not a good day to be dressed in all black, well not until the sun went down, that's when all the bats come out!
Peter Murphy literally had to train for this. Like he trained for a long time to be able to stay upside down for this long without passing out or giving himself brain damage.
Do a Siouxsie & the Banshees reaction (probably most popular song would be 'Spellbound') - you'll probably understand the scene Bauhaus was coming from in the late 70s-early 80s better.
Loved Bauhaus back in the day, along with The Sisters of Mercy, The Cult, Siouxsie and the Banshees etc. If you want to react to a really creepy song listen to Ghosts by Japan. Got a Queen of the Damned vibe from this performance.
Last week I closed out a Halloween music show with this song on a zoom for adults with disabilities. I also included The Plasmatics "The Dammed" which should also be on your list. Thanks for doing Bauhaus. The band name comes from a German decorative arts movement.
This song was released on 12inc vinyl and was an anthem to all the lost soul that were left over from the 70 punk movement in the uk, remember it being played in the Limit club in Sheffield 40 years ago.
Bela Lugosi was an actor who became famous for portraying Dracula in the 1930s and other roles in horror movies. Hence the reason why he's singing hanging upside down like a vampire. And Bauhaus were an English Goth band form the 80s whose lead singer is Peter Murphy who also released solo albums.
Are you girls going to do another Q&A/Reveal video when you reach 25k subs? btw Bela Lugosi was the original king of b&w silent horror movies. He played all the favourite and best known monsters and freaks hence the "undead" line and hanging upside down
Crazy atmospheric. First time I heard it was from the early 80’s horror movie The Hunger. Very dark and moody track. Fits the opening of that movie well, and still what I remember most about that film...and couple of other scenes 😄
I think the drums were upbeat but the guitar and bass grooves are slow. Yeah this is their longerst song. They have some real hard and fast ones. A good variety but mostly all spooky. They were sort of the premier goth rock band
Bauhaus was the genesis of Goth music. Peter Murphy is hanging upside down in an imitation of a bat. Come on girls....Bela Lugosi...Count Dracula.. vampires...
Bauhaus was very big in the early 80's. Just after the punk periode in the early 80's the new wave started and that's were they were very known! The term gothic rock did not excist at that time. That something that was created in the 90's.
lol simple..but yet no one plays like this..and those that do are pale imitators..they have been very influential and a few bands today try to be like them..not even close..
You ladies need to check out Dream Theater. So many good songs from them. Many Reactors start with "Glass Prison". Or "Endless Sacrifice" is killer! \m/ o_o
We still don't understand how he managed to be upside down the whole time !!! How crazy is that ?!? :O :O
This song should be played in every Halloween party, and always in the dark!
all the blood would go to my head i would pass out lol, great reaction.
Yes he's singing undead
Peter Murphy ( The lead singer) practiced singing upside down.
I'd say your assessment is spot-on. It's a cool performance, but not their best song by a long shot.

This track was famously used in the vampire film 'The Hunger' starring David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon
Bela Lugosi was mostly famous for his portrayal of Dracula.

Ahhhh thanks for the info!
Listen to "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy. Kind of a gothic love song. Good stuff! 👍🏼

Wow. Congrats on encountering Bauhaus. That's a classic.
How long will it take these girls to stop bopping before they actually realize what's going on here...
He is singing "Undead", because Bela Lugosi was very famous for playing Dracula back in the black/white film era.

Can't believe you didn't include TSOM

bela lugosi , dracula an universal classic. the song is a masterpiece.

Well I can say, they've still got. Decades upon decades later, and Peter Murphy can still enamor a crowd

And still had his voice

They originally were named Bauhaus 1919, I guess that was the start of that decorative art movement in Germany, but dropped 1919
This song was released on 12inc vinyl and was an anthem to all the lost soul that were left over from the 70 punk movement in the uk, remember it being played in the Limit club in Sheffield 40 years ago.
From my home town Northampton great band one of the best performance s at Coachella EVER

Lead singer Peter Murphy had a solo hit Cuts You Up that sounds nothing like this, check it out.
Bela Lugosi was the first actor to portray Count Dracula in the movies. The Count was a vampire so he is Undead.
Are you girls going to do another Q&A/Reveal video when you reach 25k subs?
btw Bela Lugosi was the original king of b&w silent horror movies. He played all the favourite and best known monsters and freaks hence the "undead" line and hanging upside down
Oh thnx for the info!
And for the Q&A not sure. Probably something of the sort :)
It was not in silent films. He became famous with 1931's DRACULA.
Legendary song
Bela lugosi era un actor de películas de terror de lo años 50 de Estados Unidos Abrazo desde Argentina
Era rumano
They were already in their late 40's. Peter Murphy's vampire bat stunt is amazing! godfather of goth?
This song is to goth music what "Rock Around The Clock" is to rock and roll. It started it all.
BEAUTIFUL 😍
Was at this show! He was upside down.
‘Undead’

This song to me this song always sounds like one of pink early song especially Roger Syd Barrett Guitar playing.
Believe it or not, hanging upside like this is part of how astronauts train for the effects of weightlessness in space.
You ladies crack me up. Like who's Bauhaus??? Too funny.
that was fucking cool
Live! Good choice!
Too bad. Your loss.
🤘💜🤘
Many credit Bauhaus with this very song for birthing the Gothic music genre. They do have a lot of good music imo.
The virginal brides file past his tomb.,..the Count..Undead...

I got into Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy in 1985. Absolutely were labeled as “Gothic” at the time.
