Isn't it great that in 1979 there was room for such new ideas as this (which basically spawned a genre) The melody, guitar line and drums/bass are all pretty basic (we are just post-punk at this stage, remember, so simplicity was a virtue) but it's the production (plus the bravery to allow plenty of space for the instrumental atmospherics) that elevates this to something special. As others have pointed out, it's used to great effect in The Hunger and Bela Lugosi is the actor who played the definitive Dracula (Though Christopher Lee may want to fang that out with him) in the 1930s.

A few amazing facts I learned about Bela Lugosi:
1. His last film was directed by Ed Wood, which was well portrayed by Martin Landau as the retired actor in Tim Burton's film.
2. Silent film superstar Clara Bow was smitten by Lugosi's films, and was briefly married to him.
3. Lugosi always embraced his famous Dracula role, and as a last wish, was buried in his costume!
This played over the opening credits of the David Bowie/Susan Sarandon/Catherine Deneuve movie "The Hunger". When Bauhaus split, Peter Murphy went solo and the remaining three went on as Tones on Tail at first releasing the single "Go" and later changing their name to Love and Rockets. Daniel Ash does some great guitar work. Check out "So Alive"
That opening scene and this song are just about perfect
The Hunger is a pretty good movie, too. Deneuve/Sarandon are pretty hot.

I guess the next Bauhaus song to listen would be She's in Parties... Excellent use of basslines
Bauhaus was also GREAT at doing amazing covers. They did "Ziggy Stardust", "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores", "Telegram Sam", and "Third Uncle", all of which really add something to the original and pay tribute to it while also being original interpretations. Their cover of "Ziggy Stardust" is particularly amazing, and I actually prefer it to Bowie's original (even though Bowie is my all-time fave musician).
I gotta say every one of their covers is better, to my ear, than the original. No offense to Eno and Bowie and Bolan, but there's just more raw power in these covers. Still love you Brian, David, and Mark, but the heart wants what the heart wants.
A) I never thought I'd hear anyone reacting to this cult classic.
B) Especially not someone to whom I subscribed based on proggy Yes / Rush stuff.

I've always liked the song "Double Dare" the best. I saw them open up a concert with that song and it blew me away. The three musicians started the song onstage, and Peter Murphy was backstage singing into a camera with only his head showing on a large tube TV onstage. It was really intense since I didn't know their music at the time.
My favorite song is probably In the night or In the flat field. Oh and The three shadows and Burning from the inside. Can’t pick just one.

Been listening to this tune for decades and it finally hit me just now, that the hihat/snare pattern is essentially a bossa nova drum riff!
I was lucky enough to be able to witness Bauhaus performing this at a small club during the Edinburg Festival in 1981. It was an experience of a lifetime! It was VERY dark and moody in the club, and they got the atmosphere down pat. Peter Murphy was quite the entertainer and all the girls in the ladies bathroom afterwards were all a-flutter with “Oh, he actually touched my hand and I felt his presence and beauty from it! I’ll never wash this hand again!” I guess he was the goth version of Elvis for them! He really was beautiful in his goth-y way. He doesn’t look so great these days, unfortunately. I saw them perform in Sheffield. I think they supported Japan or vice versa. When Pete Murphy left the stage he was exhausted, he had to be wrapped in a blanket and led off. He was skin and bones so looked frail. I don’t know if there were any further reasons for his condition.

The bass player in Radiohead used to take this 12" to parties and put it on when he was young, and he was still playing it when they were DJing in their webcasts in the 2000s
This was where post-punk developed into goth. Very interesting musical phase the late 70s and early 80s. Often minimal, but also experimental.
post punk has always been a goth/goth associated thing, the first post punk artist was siouxsie and the banshees, arguably the first true goth band as well. post punk separated i feel like when the smiths became a thing but dark post punk still is very goth in my opinion

It's always tremendous fun, watching you gradually making up your mind about tracks like this! I don't know if you ever do double-headers, but a reaction to the original 'Telegram Sam', then Bauhaus' lovely cover version is something I would definitely get out of bed for.

This track was recorded live in studio in a single take.
As mentioned in previous comments, this song was the opening soundtrack for the 1983 horror film "The Hunger" with David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. A sparse, atmospheric and expressionistic "new age" vampire movie worth the watching.
I aged 40 years watching that film.

Bauhaus generally was a big play in the mid to late 80's underground club scene, a dive club we frequented in Santa Barbara played a ton of this, the Ziggy cover and of course tones on tail.
You did it right! Just listening to the Music! No video, no pictures. It‘s a journey!
Love this song. This could go on for another hour and it wouldn't be long enough. I find the drums COMPELLING. The constant pulse of the bass drum, the high-hat double and the syncopated rim-shot on snare never change. It's almost like a drum machine but by a person. Anne Rice would call it "preternatural." (She loves that word.)

this track will never get old. almost guaranteed they were using a Tape Echo tape delay/reverb unit. You can just twist the knobs and stretch and compress the echoes as you change the playback speed.
one of my other favourite songs by these guys is "OK This is the Pops" when they were Tones on Tail. killer track, such a great sound
The title might have been referring to how Bela Lugosi was like a *victim* of Dracula, becaus it led to him being typecasted for the rest of his life. Boris Karloff was also being typecasted, but his Frankenstein monster required so much make-up that he didn't have to be recognized as the character in real life, so he was regarded as more versatile.

The birth of “goth” played right here, great fun watching you get into a song I’ve loved for many years, try “She’s in Parties” or “ Terror Couple Kill Colonel” they also do a great version of “Telegram Sam” by T Rex
Bauhaus is a state of mind listening material, dark room with relaxing imbibing on the side.
Murphy did some solid solo works, especially album Deep, with songs like A Strange Kind of Love, Cuts You Up and Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem. And then there's of course Dali's Car, the collaboration with Japan's Mick Karn.
Probably the 1st consciously "Gothic" song to be a hit. It really launched Goth as a sound and subculture - not really separate from Post Punk itself but at least a clear sub-genre.
"She's in Parties" is the next most likely song of theirs you may have heard of.
You’re always full of surprises! I’ve always really liked Peter Murphy’s voice and enjoy some of his solo work, too. When I hear Bauhaus I’m always reminded of when my mom and 13yr old goth sister drove across country to visit me and my poor mother had to listen to Bauhaus all the way. She was haunted by the sounds of ‘I get bored, I do get bored in the flat field’. 😂
The live version is considered to be the definitive version. It's often credited with being the birth of Goth Rock and it's main anthem.
This is the start of goth rock and that's why it's so prevalent and beloved.

While I'm not a huge mash-up fan, there is a version of this song mashed with She Wants Revenge's song Tear You Apart that is pretty amazing.
The Effects and strange sounds are from Daniel Ash. The effects are from analogue delay effects. The sounds are created by adjusting the controls while the guitar is being played. The sounds are created in real time.Three members of this band formed the band Love & Rockets.
Dear Justin, do you start realizing why the Punk revolution was so important for the music movement, far more important than Punk itself (which, by the way, lasted less than a couple of years)? It opened Pandora's musical box, and record companies signed, well, almost everybody who had a new concept.

I think you’re right about the effects, echo and reverb. Delay is used, too, for some of the effects as well as some tape manipulation in the production. This reminded me of The Police. It came out the same year as Regatta de Blanc (which you started listening to) and has some similar elements. There’s a bossa-like track on Regatta, too, called The Bed’s Too Big Without You which is pretty good. Also, the song Bring On the Night is good, too, which is the next track on the album if you ever decide to continue it.

The Police comparison is an apt one. It’s actually a spooky dub reggae number. The percussion has a ska edge to it.
Another great band to see live ... I love this time late 70s 80s ... I live in Birmingham UK ... I used to freqent the Rum Runner (a club which Duran Duran used to go before they got big and the music was great ) and The Holy City Zoo... so much great music ... so long ago now but great memories 👌
Love your take on this! The sound and rhe meaning behind rhe lyrics-you got it! As to your small criticism about the way the song transitions from atmospheric to sort of in your face...that was intentional, too. That was the part where it transitions from setting the mood to going into full theatrics, as is fitting for a tribute to an actor who really "vamped" it up. Thanks for reacting to this song-it deserves to be remembered-and Happy Haloweeeen!

I love it... Goth, vampire song, one of the first ...When I was young the joke about this song was : drive downtown, windows wide open, playing Bela Lugosi's Dead at the maximum volume, and see how many goth girl you get...
Great band, I consider their song "Mask" to be one of the most tastefully disturbing songs I have ever heard. If you liked Bela Lugosi, you should definitely give "Mask" a listen :)

Gosh, I haven’t thought about this band in years! Never really got into them too much, but some of my friends really did. If I’m correct, the other band that formed with members of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, I preferred more. Still cool to hear this after so many years.

First thing first. The version of this song that I'm familiar with, the one that got tons of airplay in college radio is the "Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape" live version (Old Vic, 1982). It's strange to hear this song without the audience noise. Bauhaus, as you probably know by now, is made up of Peter Murphy and Love and Rockets, both entities enjoying artistic and commercial success after their breakup in the early/mid 80s. Murphy's best work is Deep (1989) and Love & Rockets (apart from the So Alive period that I'm sure you've heard even if you're not aware of it) did their best work in Earth, Sun, Moon (1987).
Bauhaus, by the way, recorded the absolute best version yet of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust in 1982. Bowie approved. Bauhaus appeared in the opening sequence of Bowie's "The Hunger" playing the song. Appropriately, Bowie played an ageless vampire in the movie.
I like Bauhaus but personally their first single then their debut album with their minimalist aspect is not what I prefer about them.
Justin, try the following tracks: "The Passion of Lovers", "Kick in the Eye", "Silent Hedges", "Spirit" (Single Version, which is the superior one to me), "She's in Parties", "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight? "," Slice of Life "...... You could check out Dalis Car, a one time project that Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy did with Mick Karn. their joint album, The Waking Hour (released in 1984) could please you !
I used to watch these guys at a local pub in their home town Northampton UK. Pete Murphy’s stage presence was obvious even then.
This one helped a lot of kids who were unhappy and went full Goth. Idk if that helped them but this was way before we medicated everyone who didn’t fit. The days of Jocks, Stoners and Nerds. There was that fringe that didn’t want those labels. Me? I worked all of them cause I have vision.

Awesome! I bought this 12" single on picture disc in the early eighties. It doesn't get any more goth than this.
Bauhaus is named after the early 20th century German avant garde art school.
There’s some great footage out there of Peter Murphy singing this hanging upside down like a bat.
This is THE Goth anthem... Interesting band. Had some really cool, original songs. A different approach to rock n roll and as such they're an acquired taste for many. They actually did a cover of Brian Eno's "Third Uncle" which rattles the teeth and kicks so much ass it hurts.
Here's a really weird connection I had never thought of before; this track and Zep's Whole Lotta Love!!! The instrumental section in the middle is largely based on very atmospheric percussion from John Bonham with a very similar vibe to this.
Saw him in concert & could almost touch him. Almost fainted!
This is the original '79 white label single version but it's not the version that gained popularity & became the signature tune of Bauhaus & the Goth scene, itself.
The definitive version is the Old Vic live recording from 1982 featured on the compilation album _Bauhaus 1979-1983_ and popularized in the 1983 Bowie film _The Hunger._ The white label is more of a demo.
Peter Murphy's first post Bauhaus project was Dalis Car with Japan's Mick Karn. I recommend His Box. Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets have great music and Peter Murphy is the prince of Goth. Dive into that rabbit hole!
this is to goth music what "rock around the clock" is to rock and roll. There were earlier creepy songs that fit the genre, but the genre didn't exist until this came along. A bit of trivia: a music reviewer in 1967 described the Doors music as "gothic rock", probably the first use of the term. Their song "the unknown soldier" definitely fits. Surprised no goth band has done a cover of it.
It was one of songs in the movie "THE HUNGER", starring David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. I think both film and song are so underrated!
Since you are doing Bowie Ziggy Stardust, you should hear the Bauhaus version.
Another great reation! You nalied it with the comment about the bossa nova beat. I don't love everything from Bauhaus, but this song is really hauting! And groundbreaking! Differently, I love the vocals, how they slowly rise up, explode and turn down in the end. It perfectly fits the song structure. If you notice it, the last (and epic) chorus is very low in the mix (buried?) and never overcome the music. After all, the song is a great homage to classic horror cinema, one of the most prototypical characters in the genre and one of its most prototypical actors.
Danny Ash often runs his guitar into a synthesizer of sorts. You can see him fiddling with it in some of the live footage.
Afternoon, Justin. Dave from London. Beware Of Darkness! Like you, I love the moody atmospherics of this song. As far as I remember, Goth was like punk in that the music was almost secondary to the anti-establishment cult and fashion movement. Singer Pete Murphy was probably more famous as a model, and his dark, brooding features were a common sight on UK billboards and TV commercials at the time. Still, I liked some of the Goth bands, like The Cure, probably because they were more commercial than Bauhaus, say. Check out the creepy but gorgeous Lullaby.
Of course Goth is a 'look' even today and one of the top UK soaps, Coronation Street (yes, I admit, I am a Corrie fan!), currently is mired in a court case where a group of thugs are accused of killing a young lad who was protecting his Goth girlfriend.
Anyone here remember "Night Moves" in Glasgow. This and The Cults Spiritwalker. Good times.

I envy you as when I first heard this song it was through speakers & not headphones, but maybe that's a blessing as the vocals worked whilst listening through speakers.
I don't remember anything else from this band, but I think they set the bar too high with this track. [How would they top/equal it?]
This song is by far their best and most interesting.
The only other song I can think of where the drum pattern never changes is 'Goody Two Shoes" by Adam and the Ants. Can anyone else think of any? I don't mean techno drum machine stuff, I mean an actual drummer not changing the pattern for an entire song, no breaks or fills of any kind.

Why can I hear Syd-era Floyd in this? Interstellar Overdrive anyone? Bought this when it came out. Their next couple of 45's and debut album (In A Flat Field) are excellent.
I can't stand it when people say "You need headphone to listen to that..." David J plays bass lines that are sub-audible, "bowel shaking." You need a decent sub-woofer to experience how they sound in concert. Try it again without the headphones. You may have a very different experience of the song.

My greatest Peter Murphy memory was seeing him play at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA on Mar 30, 1990, but not because of Murphy. Nine Inch Nails opened for him, and Trent totally stole the show. It was so impressive, that they brought NIN back to open for Joan Jett two weeks later, on Apr 12.
Another great choice and an interesting reaction. Have a crack at 'Smokebelch II' by The Sabres of Paradise. The nine minute version.
"Confusion will be my epitaph" as I choose between digital and analog. Late 70's primitive pedals and rack effects( tape delays & reverb) were way harder than before computers and click tracks. Bela Lugosi was a heroin addict and walked through his later life in a preternatural shuffle like a vampire! Peace.
Justin, not one of my favourite tunes, but this is what POST-punk did: imaginative people felt they could do anything. Like combine a Dracula story with the effects of dub reggae - all of that reverb and delay slowed down and speeded up. I think I've said this before, but the late 70s and the early 80s were a really exciting time to be a music fan.
An oldie, but not baddie. I didn't listen to tons of these, they're seen as the godfathers of Goth, but this I liked. It was different, got your attention. That said, a little overindulgent, too long. I get it, it's their 1st single, out of a jam, and they were experimenting etc. But with discipline this could've been a brilliant 5 min track. Overall i liked Goth, though it became a very broad term. Eg, Joy Division, The Cure, pop up on Goth lists, and though bleak at times, I've never thought of them as such. It also seemed to be more about fashion than music a lot of the time. No, i didn't listen to lots of these, cos from memory, what i heard, while certainly Goth, was a bit samey. And i drifted to the more pop/rock side with band like: The Mission, Fields of the Nephilim, and The Cult, who'd distilled down from Southern Death Cult. These bands also worth a listen JP, if you look to continue your 'Goth' journey
As much as I love Bauhaus, I totally agree with you on the length of this song. After a while I get a bit bored with it and skip the remainder of the song. I don't think this would be what I would recommend as an introduction to the group, but I guess I get it. Having said that, this band and their peers within the genre are my absolute favorites! Anyway, just saying I agree about the length!
@@ijustneedmyself Cheers for that. And maybe i gave up on them a little too soon, I should've listened to more. Just shows you though, if you as an avid fan can get tired, maybe it doesn't make the best impression. Though JP seemed to like a lot more of this than he didn't. Maybe you could post him some tips of what you consider their better albums, works/pieces that he (and the rest of us) may enjoy more.
@@jfergs.3302 The great thing about music is there's always time to get acquainted! I understand that it's an iconic song, but it could stand to be a couple minutes shorter. I'm glad he enjoyed it! He rarely reacts to music similar to this so I'm always happy to see it. I'll definitely recommend him a few songs.
Hmm. I didn't know about the godfathers of Goth - - - - and they were on 4AD weren't they - Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins - yeah, THAT'S the nagging back-of-the-brain sonic link I got from the opening - early DCD, etc. Thanks for the info.

A lot of these sounds are VERY familiar to dub reggae fans. Check out Dennis Bovell, Mad Professor, LKJ in Dub, etc. It's as much about the spaces/ as where things ''aren't'' as they are. Also check out Bauhaus cover of Ziggy Stardust.

Wow, this was really interesting! Liked this one alot actually. Great way to make repetetive themes (like Oldfield does) sound like they're constantly evolving and on the verge of turning into somerthing else (yet here they don't really), while keeping us interested. This is clever music for analytical people I think. The drums are the standout feature for me here, I'm doing a combination of dancing and creeping around to this one ;) I agree about the vocals though. Anyways I'm intrigued.
