Pretty sure that Brom, Katrina, and the dude who says “And some don’t even wear their skin” were at least subconsciously inspirations for the designs of Gaston, Cinderella, and Anton Ego.

Andreas Deja, Gaston's supervising animator, took inspiration from Brom Bones, since Milt Kahl, who animated Brom, was Deja's mentor at Disney. I guess it was a nice love letter to one of the Nine Old Men. :-)
@@WishfulThinkingArt Also, Marc Davis animated Katrina, who also did Cinderella, Alice, Tinkerbell and Maleficent. He was the go-to animator for all the pretty women characters.

"Now gather around and ill alucitate on what goes outside when it gets late!" Creepy introduction to tell a scary story, heh heh heh. I wonder if the Headless Horseman was a true entity that chased people at night in Sleep Hollow and Washington Irving is telling us this in the story of Sleepy Hollow. P.s. I dont live to far from the actual town of Sleep Hollow,by car with less traffic 20 minutes-maybe less, heh heh heh.
I kind of got the impression that the Headless Horseman was a local urban legend/ ghost story that Washington Irving heard about, tweaked a little, and adapted into his story.
The headless horseman is based on the Dullahan of Irish lore, a type of spirit who rides in the night. They wield either a sword or a whip that is made from human spines and carry their head under their arm. Sometimes they can be seen driving a black coach and will throw bowls of blood at people. The Black coach with a Dullahan driver appears in Darby O'Gill & the Little People alongside a Banshee.
Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat for Halloween! When ghosts and goblins by the score! Ring the bell on your front door! Better not be stingy or! YOUR NIGHTMARES WILL COME TRUE!
If you ever thought Brom and Katrina looked like Gaston and Cinderella here's the thing. Gaston's animator, Andreas Deja, was actually inspired by this movie when designing him, much like how he was inspired by Maleficent and Shere Khan when designing Jafar and Scar. As for Katrina, it might be because Katrina was animated by Ollie Johnston, who didn't animate Cinderella, but animated Anastasia who shared Cinderella's same model, Helene Stanley.
As a kid I never put 2+2 together that Brom IS the horseman. Looking at this scene now its very subtle. Brom is intentionally trying to scare icabod at the party, and its believable that might be as far as he was willing to go. But he shows off that he has everything to be the horseman at the party, the saber, a cloak, even the pumpkin off the scarecrow.
I love that they never outright say whether it was the real Headless Horseman or Brom. They keep it open-ended. Maybe Brom went the full mile and dressed up as the ghost to scare Ichabod off, or maybe he thought the story was enough, and didn't know that Crane was actually attacked by the Horseman. A few different iterations seem to imply one or the other. "But if you ask Brom Bones what happened to Ichabod Crane, the only answer you'll get is a smile..."
Tall thin woman: "Some are fat!" Short fat woman: "And some are thin!" An underappreciated gag, with a lot of implications about what we consider to be "monsters".
besides, Katrina wouldn't have actually said yes to icahbod if he'd proposed - she only led him on to think that she might because she felt that Brom was too sure of himself and she wanted to annoy him a bit, I guess it was her way of saying 'are you going to propose to me or not'?
But Brom already had a dislike for Ichabod when he first came into town. If anything, he was a bully and took advantage of Ichabod’s fear of superstitions to win Katrina over. That wasn’t cool.
@@nostalgik._that’s what makes this story great it isn’t black and white the characters have both good and bad qualities some standing out more than others
0:09 For context, there was a funny little superstition back then where it was believed that if you spilled salt, you'd would be stricken with bad luck, or in this time period's case, *the Devil himself* would be over your shoulder to take you. The way to remedy this was to toss the spilled salt over your shoulder, getting it in the Devil's eyes and making him recoil.
As a child I was terrified of this part. Not what came after, but this song. Naturally it’s now one of my fave things to listen to during the month of October.
I read a short adaptation where Brom told this story to get Ichabod spooked, then proceeded to disguise himself as the horseman and chase after him, eventually killing him.
On a historical note, depicting this party as a Halloween party in particular is an anachronism; at neither the time this story is set, nor when Washington Irving wrote it was Halloween a major holiday. In the former case, it's especially so because Tarrytown's population was majority-Dutch, and Halloween is a Celtic holiday. It started gaining momentum as an American holiday decades after the story was published, when Irish and Scottish immigrants brought it with them. But, Halloween provides better visuals, and this is a cartoon, not a historical documentary, so it isn't really a big deal.
You're missing something, sugar. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set in Sleepy Hollow not Tarrytown. It's a real town in New York about 1 mile from Tarrytown.
@@ChibiProwl The Sleepy Hollow of today is not the one Irving wrote about. In the story, Sleepy Hollow is the wooded area Ichabod Crane has his encounter with the Horseman in. The real-life town of Sleepy Hollow changed the name in the 90's for the tourists.
It's one half of a feature-length Disney film called "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad." In the '50s, they cut it up so they could show it on the Disney TV show.
What I like about this short animation what made it so different is there is no good guy or bad guy. In the beginning we all think Brom Bones is the twin of Gaston from Beauty and the beast, but the narrator tells how while describing Brom Bones. “Now, there was no malice in his mischief. Though he was known for his masculinity strength. Brom did like to play practical jokes, he was still quiet the hero.” That means Brom Bones was like every common man. He is kind, you see it when he feeds some of the beer to the animals even the stray dogs in SleepyHollow. Ichabod though he may seem like a common well brought up young man and his good deeds touched some of the ladies, even when he is a teacher. It is told that “Spoil the rod, spoil the child. Though at times he was good to his pupils especially if their mothers ARE GOOD cooks.” Ichabod is not evil, yes he WAS using the mothers of his students to feed him. But he wasn’t hurt or manipulating anyone. I think Katrina was the manipulating force here. I don’t know how it goes in the story but I believe Katrina wanted Brom Bones to marry her. But Brom wasn’t in any hurry. So, when she tried using some of the townsmen to play the “second” men hoping it would make Brom jealous enough. Only everyone knows with one look from Brom, they run away. So, Ichabod made the perfect suitor for Katrina’s plot to get Brom Bones jealous. It is harmless flirting. In her eyes but these three characters are NOT evil. They behave like normal people that is what made this story so interesting to me. There was no good nor, evil.
I’ve actually played Sleepy Hollow as a theater once! Me and my theater grou made our own version of the story! And I played Ichabod Crane! And the guy who played his/mine rival was a 10 years old little boy. I was 25 years old.
Not only was the "some don't even wear their skin" guy the model for the food critic from Ratatouille, but his chair being shaped like a coffin also likely inspired the critic's office having a coffin shape. Also, some not "wear[ing] their skin" likely inspired the critic's typewriter looking like a skull.
It's kinda funny how Gaston is basically actually evil villain Brom. They're both big men around town, the local big guy and bully. But Brom is actually likable and has no ill will, he just likes to play pranks. He's also not as dumb as you think, seeming to have a wider vocabulary than Gaston from the song he sings. It's kinda funny that Disney revisited this archetype and made an actual full villain out of it, to contrast with Beast.
In the animated film, Ichabod had even looked into the horseman body through his cloak and looked even more frightened. So for this version, maybe the horseman was real after all.
I remember seeing this when I was a little kid, Brom was my favorite character in this and I as a kid thought that he was the hero of this, he had all the right looks.

@@bowlingbbabe I just rewatched the ending and the hat and the pumpkin are found just before the stone path of the bridge ends, so I would say that even if he already passed the tunnel he wasnt of the bridge yet + he looked back of course. Maybe this is why one mustnt look back after „crossing the bridge“? One thinks oneself save because the first assumption will always be that you only have to get past the tunnel to survive, so after crossing it people naturally look behind but thats the one fatal mistake that keeps them on the bridges path just long enough for the headless horseman to get them

P.s. +Neftali Rivera Jr that's really cool, I strongly doubt that the headless horseman is real though.

I kind of got the impression that the Headless Horseman was a local urban legend/ ghost story that Washington Irving heard about, tweaked a little, and adapted into his story.
I live in CT! Let’s go check it out!

And he is shown to be a horse rider earlier on and the narrator says he is known for playing pranks.
Tall thin woman: "Some are fat!"
Short fat woman: "And some are thin!"

Brom did the right thing to spook Ichabod
He only loved Katrina for her money while Brom really loved her.
besides, Katrina wouldn't have actually said yes to icahbod if he'd proposed - she only led him on to think that she might because she felt that Brom was too sure of himself and she wanted to annoy him a bit, I guess it was her way of saying 'are you going to propose to me or not'?
But Brom already had a dislike for Ichabod when he first came into town. If anything, he was a bully and took advantage of Ichabod’s fear of superstitions to win Katrina over. That wasn’t cool.

The Virgin Ichabod vs. the Chad Brom

When you grow up, and you realize how awesome Brom Bones was: charming, can hold his own in a fight, funny, and can even croon a tune.
ichabod and brom were the og incel vs chad
What I like about this short animation what made it so different is there is no good guy or bad guy. In the beginning we all think Brom Bones is the twin of Gaston from Beauty and the beast, but the narrator tells how while describing Brom Bones.
“Now, there was no malice in his mischief. Though he was known for his masculinity strength. Brom did like to play practical jokes, he was still quiet the hero.”
That means Brom Bones was like every common man. Though at times he was good to his pupils especially if their mothers ARE GOOD cooks.”
Ichabod is not evil, yes he WAS using the mothers of his students to feed him.

This is still the best Headless Horseman movie
In the animated film, Ichabod had even looked into the horseman body through his cloak and looked even more frightened.
So for this version, maybe the horseman was real after all.
Brom is exactly the kind of guy you want to invite to your Halloween party.
