"With a hip hip and a clippity clop, he's out looking for a head to swap. So don't try to figure out a plan, You can't reason with a headless man" Bing Crosby had a awesome voice.
“And if you doubt this tale is so, I met that spook just a year ago. Now I didn’t stop for a second look. I made for the bridge that spans the brook! For once you cross that bridge my friends, the ghost is through and his power ends.”
Bing Crosby brought an amazing atmosphere to this story's narrative. When he talks, I feel like I'm part of a group sitting around a campfire at midnight, listening to this creepy tale. Sometimes I get chills watching this cartoon! A Halloween classic or an excellent film any time of the year.
The headless horseman is the greatest villain with the creepiest laugh in animated history. They need to put this disney classic back on tv during halloween.
Unfortunately, this was only the spooky half of a Disney film called *The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.* The other half was about the characters in the kid's novel *The Wind in the Willows.*
Angela Roquemore I always wonder what it would have been like if Basil Rathbone had narrated The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, I remember his reading several Edgar Allen Poe stories and poems, IMHO it might have been interesting to say the least how he would have handled Washington Irving’s story.
@@MsXizan while you are correct, Disney also had a standalone version of this exact mini film on VHS back in the day that was minus the Mr. Toad part....."The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Honestly though, how many people still own an operating VHS player though? Lol
I know Halloween is over, but just can't resist this toon. It's a shame the Disney channel stopped airing it, it's way better than the crap they show now.
The story of the Headless Horseman: back when the war for independence raged on, the king conscripted German mercenaries known as Hessians into the war. But while the rest were in it for money, there was one who was in it for carnage. Nobody knows his real name but he was feared by both rebels and Hessians. he was notorious for riding into battle with a saber and axe, lopping off heads one by one. But everyone is destined to meet their end, so near the end of the war on halloween night in the outskirts of Sleepy Hollow, New York, the horseman was riding alone until a loud boom was heard and before he knew it, his head was taken clean from his body. To this day, he still rides on hallows eve still looking for his long lost head and killing anyone who crosses his path...
Riding through the woods hearing all the creature sounds is my fav part. So well done....Bing Crosby just adds to/makes it the classic it is for past 69 years. Wow!
These are in my opinion, the ten greatest Disney songs EVER: 1. Friend Like Me - Aladdin 2. The Headless Horseman - The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad 3. Colors of the Wind - Pocahontas 4. I actually has play Sleepy Hollow as a theater once! Me and my theater group made our own version of the story! And I was playing Ichabod Crane! The guy who played his/mine rival Brom Bones was a ten years old little boy. I was 25 years old.
As a lifelong fan of ghost stories, and this one in particular, I'm so lucky to actually be living in Sleepy Hollow for my third straight Halloween! Have a spooky day, everybody!
Not only is the design scary, but the slow build up makes the anticipation pay off extremely well in a very terrifying way. Disney doesn't do these kinds of things anymore.
My favorite Halloween cartoon, especially since I was born and raised in Ossining, NY, just above Sleepy Hollow. Of course, in school it was a given that we'd read Washington Irving's story.
I always looked forward to see this magnificent clip from the animation by Walt Disney. I never knew Bing Crosby sang this song. I went to the Haunted/Mansion House at the Magic Kigndom, and it was very dark and creepy. Watching the spirits dance and looking at some sitting next to me, scared the hell out of me !
Not only was the "some don't even wear their skin" guy the model for the food critic from Ratatouille, but his chair being shaped like a coffin also likely inspired the critic's office having a coffin shape. Also, some not "wear[ing] their skin" likely inspired the critic's typewriter looking like a skull.
Thanks heaps for sharing this. I'm not too big on scary movies, but this movie takes the cake. Beautifully done animation and an exceptional sound track. I never knew that Bing Crosby did the singing. Sweet. Showing this to my kids tomorrow. I need to buy the animated movie. Amazon or e-Bay, here I come. Eventually!
I watched this cartoon the Headless Horseman in school of the 1970s during Halloween school party. It's my favorite Halloween cartoon and Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. 🎃👻🎉 🎃 👻🎭🎃

[Brom:]
(spoken)
Just gather round and I'll elucidate
On what goes on outside when it gets late
Along about midnight, the ghosts and banshees
Get together for their nightly jamboree
There's things with horns and saucer eyes
Some with fangs about this size
[Skinny Woman:]
Some are fat
[Fat Woman:]
And some are thin
[Ghoulish Man]
And some don't even wear their skin
[Brom:]
I'm telling ya, brother. It's a frightful sight
To see what goes on Halloween Night
(sung)
When the spooks have a midnight jamboree
They break it up with fiendish glee
Ghosts are bad, but the one that's cursed
Is the Headless Horseman, he's the worst
[Chorus:]
That's right, he's a fright
On Halloween night
When he goes a-joggin' 'cross the land
Holdin' his noggin in his hand
Demons take one look and groan
And hit the road for parts unknown
[Chorus:]
Beware, take care, he rides alone
[Brom and Chorus:]
And there's no spook like a spook who's spurned
They don't like him, and he's really burned
He swears to the longest day he's dead
He'll show them that he can get a head
[Brom:]
They say he's tired of his flamin' top
He's got a yen to make a swap
So he rides one night each year
To find a head in the hollow here
[Chorus:]
Now he likes them little, he likes them big
Part in the middle, or a wig
Black or white or even red
[Brom:]
The Headless Horseman needs a head
[Brom and Chorus:]
With a hip-hip and a clippity-clop
He's out lookin' for a top to chop
So don't stop to figure out a plan
You can't reason with a headless man
[Brom:]
Now if you doubt this tale is so
I met that spook just a year ago
Now I didn't stop for a second look
But made for the bridge that spans the brook
For once you cross that bridge, my friends
[Chorus:]
The ghost is through, his power ends
[Brom:]
So when you're riding home tonight
Make for the bridge with all your might
He'll be down in the hollow there
He needs your head, look out, beware
[Chorus:]
With a hip-hip and a clippity-clop
He's out looking for a head to swap
So don't try to figure out a plan
You can't reason with a headless man
