Inkscape Repeating Pattern Tutorial: How to Make Seamless Geometric Vector Art

Inkscape step-by-step beginner intermediate tutorial on how to create a seamless repeating pattern made with triangle render tool. Follow along in this Inkscape screen capture showing:
1. How to render set dimensions with triangle extension.

Your tutorials are great! Have been working my way through them all since retiring from my job where I used to use Inkscape for drawing simple diagrams. A suggestion: you can also rotate the triangle (that first one where you arrange the hinge) by choosing Object>Transform>Rotate and typing 30 degrees to get the exact rotation you need without having to align it by eye. Once you get the three triangle in the correct orientation, you can use the alignment tools to line up the corners, again without having to rely on doing it visually. Also, I noticed a bug in v1.3 which prevents you from being able to move objects if you've zoomed in too much.

Hi Rick. Yes, its a grest design. I think however that your method in this tutorial is too approximate - I am a stickler for perfection. I would enable snapping and ensure corner snapping and rotation centre snapping is on. Then drag the rotation centre to snap to a corner and rotate by an exact amount (ctrl rotate 2 x 15 degrees or use the transform dialog to rotate by 30). degrees). Note that the corner points which you should rotate about are actually in the middle of the stroke, not on the outer edge of the stroke. The strokes should coincide, not simply be parallel with small gaps between them. Another construction method may be to start with a regular hexagon. Another way of repeating the pattern is to create a pattern fill based on a repeatable unit. I have a few videos using older versions if Inkscape on my "Inkscape for teachers" channel using these ideas. I might try and do one inspired by your video. After trying other ways of creating this design, I think starting with a regular hexagon works well. Join various corners (e.g. every 2nd vertex) with segments then create the required triangles using the bezier tool. No direct angle measyring or specifying required.

What is the difference between copy and duplicate in Inkscape ?

Duplicate will make a second version of the selection in real time on the workspace. Copy will store the selection on the clipboard, and Paste would need to be used to see it show up on the canvas. Inkscape has many functions that reference the item copied to the clipboard. Hope this helps.
