    Okay people, I may be a bit biased but I have to say, I believe this informational video by the Wild Floridian was by far one of her best, if not one of THEE BEST informational videos on Monarch Butterflies for Florida, as well as across the United States! Well done Wild Floridian!!! You can apply her principles for your particular state and begin or continue to enjoy the Monarch Butterfly, as well as other pollinators. I will share this with others up here in Iowa, and I hope you will do the same. TOGETHER, we can make a difference, ONE MONARCH at a time! MRM

    I bought some tropical milkweed because they were the only milkweed sold 3 years ago. I had monarch caterpillars eating down the three tropical milkweed plants I had. So I ran back to the store and bought 3 more nice-sized plants only to find that those plants came with even more monarch caterpillars! The next year I didn't see any Monarchs so I started planting native milkweeds. Last year I had many tropical milkweed and raised 17 cats. A few we're infected with a parasite that killed them. Found the maggots in the bottom of my cat cage. The rest matured and flew away. I also had many cats that I left alone to fend for them selves.. This year someone gave me a camping screen room that I intend to raise my potted milkweed and all stages of monarchs in.

    I recommend 17,000 milkweed plants to start! 😂🤣😂 (as many as possible). 💕 Thank you for the video. I mulched my milkweed and I thought I had made a mistake. I thought it might make it difficult for the caterpillars to find a place to form a chrysalis. I feel better now. I can’t believe I did the right thing by accident. Another great video.....I’m a big fan of yours.

    120-140 years old Monarchs were brought over to Australia and became naturalised. Sadly over the last few decades, we have suffered the same fate as you guys, our Monarch's are in great decline. This is bad because that means no backup population.
    We have added milkweeds to our gardens this year as my girls love butterflies and Monarch's really is the symbol of butterflies in general. So we will wait and see. I saw one before Winter started in May, so we can only wait.

    in THREE failed attempts to start milkweeds, i finally figured out the the critters were chomping down the young plants - so now i found it helps to put a little chicken wire tent over the little seedlings. when the plants grow up through the wire the rabits, et c. don't eat them so much.

I already have establish plants for hummingbirds and butterfly in the front and we get hummingbirds every spring and summer and some butterflies. I'm now planting in the back yard things for monarchs. I can't wait and hopefully we can save then and many others if we all do a little bit. I'm so excited I love butterflies.

    When I first started my butterfly garden a few years back, I think I started with around 4 or 5 plants? I believe by the end of the year I had 7, and then the ones I had dropped seeds so I got more in the next few years, and when I raised caterpillars I would take cuttings and they root super easily from cuttings so I would either plant the cuttings or give them away. Right now I want more milkweeds, but in different varieties--its been near-impossible for me to get swamp milkweed plants!

    I think I planted 4 the first time and I added another 6 by the following weekend because the caterpillars just ravaged the initial 4. They ate up all 10 eventually and it took a couple of months for the plants to recover. If it was any other species, they would probably be considered a pest because they are just so hungry, but it’s an incentive to just plant more milkweed.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 роки тому +4

      LOL! So 10 was your magic number... you had a good amount of caterpillars. 🐛 And yes... absolutely.... cabbage moths are usually white butterflies... but we want to eat the cabbage so we call them moths and try to get rid of them. Pests are all about perspective! I'm so happy you are helping the monarchs!

    If at all possible, try to get your milkweed from a place that you are 100% sure doesn't use any chemicals on their plants. There's an organization in my area called _wild ones_ . They focus on native plants & they have a plant sale every year, which is where I buy my milkweed. I believe they're a national organization. Also your milkweed needs space. You start out the first year with one stalk that will eventually become 5 stalks & spread everywhere for some species. I've noticed eggs on the flower buds of my whorled milkweed. It's right next to my swamp milkweed & it really doesn't have _leaves_ , odd that they'd choose that plant instead. I agree with having at least 4-6 plants. I've had 12 caterpillars on a single plant before & it's easier to move them to another plant if you get multiples. Tip 10 certainly was hard to hear. I'm in Illinois & before this year had never heard of OE. I want to save all of them from the assassin bugs & tachinid flies.

    good morning. I just watched one of your older videos on attracting butterflies. Like you, I also attract butterflies to my garden. Two plants you need in your garden are Jathropa and Giant Milkweed. My giant milkweed attracts tons of monarchs and they lay their eggs and hatch caterpillars and go off to put their cryalys anywhere they please. If you need a giant milk weed I am growing some in pots from cuttings. Just let me know. thanks PS I also live in Pinellas county so I'm not far from you.

    Thanks for your video. I downloaded an app that identified plants/trees/insects/animals and while scanning my yard discovered honey vine milkweed. It's all over my yard and since it's a vine it easy takes over everything. I let it grow and to my surprise I found monarch caterpillars a couple of weeks ago. I have two in chrysalises and one is happily munching away on leaves. These guys devour leaves left and right so multiple plants is a must. Three of them have almost gone through one giant patch the vines I have. Now that you mentioned it, every monarch I have seen is going north/south. Mostly south. I'll plant some flowers that attract butterflies next year.

    After planting milkweed such as swamp milkweed, what other companion plants would you plant around them to act as a buffer to help minimize predators finding the caterpillars. Can it be any native flowering plant? Or should we surround it with more milkweed?

    Great info!!! I almost didn’t click bc I thought, more monarchs??? My milkweed already gets eaten down to stubs by the monarchs I already have! How do I start seedlings without the mama monarchs finding them??

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 3 роки тому +2

      Female Monarchs won't use seedlings because they're not mature and too small for her and her larvae to utilize.
      The caterpillars will be too heavy and will run out of food a LOT faster because of how small the plant is.
      It really isn't until the second year onward (If you're starting from seed), that the plants will develop and become large enough to support caterpillars 😊🐛🦋

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 роки тому +3

      LOL! I can totally understand! Those little caterpillars are big eaters! I'm working on a video on how to propagate milkweed from the milkweed you have. It should be out in the next couple of weeks. On new milkweed... you can let it grow in a screened enclosure or put netting or a basket over it. You can put it in an out of way area (I have some growing in my food forest). Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the awesome, informative video. I'm taking baby steps into the world of milkweeds. I have 1. 😬 Question, can a flower on this plant pollinate another flower on the same plant to produce seed, or can this only be accomplished by another milkweed of the same variety?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 роки тому +1

      Oh really good question! The same plant can germinate itself. There are some really neat videos out there showing how the leg of the pollinator falls into a pocket and they have to yank it out to get the process going for the milkweed. I’m not doing this justice, but it is really cool!

  • @juneramirez8580

    Ok I always hear that same statement that native milkweeds die back so if you have tropical milkweeds cut them to the ground when native milkweeds die back. So my problem is I planted 3 different native milkweeds suggested by that same organization you mentioned. I live in the low AZ desert and my native milkweeds NEVER lost their leaves or die down to the ground. I grew pine leaf, desert milkweed and Arizona milkweed. So are these desert milkweed also filled with the parasite? I have tropical milkweed and that is the only plant I ever saw cats on. I did cut them down in the winter and they are now getting big and beautiful ready for the monarchs when they decide to come through. I am working on adding many more native milkweed but think those tropical milkweed are the monocle to plant

  • @TheTrapperGuy

    I know your in my area so wanted to ask what milkweeds do you use for dryer areas. I don't have irrigation and I can't get tuberosa to survive. Currently I just have swamp milkweed in containers with no drain holes (and occasional tropical that pops up from a previous planting before learning about it. I pull those when they pop up).

    They love it so much so I'll keep them but when would be the best month to cut them down? I really want the monarchs to migrate 🦋❤

      No no no! Swamp Milkweed is *Native* ! It's a good thing to have in your yard 😁
      It's the *TROPICAL* Milkweed that you want to avoid. It's scientific name is" Asclepias Currasavica"
      While Swamp Milkweed's is "Asclepias Incarnata"

      LOL! Looks like you meant Tropical milkweed. October to November is when it should be cut back. Swamp milkweed would be native to the area. And it appears that monarchs are starting to over winter in South Florida, so you may be able to wait into mid-November/when the temperature starts dropping below 75F

    Really dumb question and way late in relation to when this came out but here goes. I planted 1 milkweed in my front garden and 2 in back. I have ordered 4 more for spring. I am in Maine. Space and sun are an issue. I was going to split the new plants between the 2 sites. If the Monarchs come and eat all the leaves from the plants in front, can they find their way to the ones in the back? If not, I can move my one in the front and have all in back. They just will not get a ton of sun.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 роки тому +2

      Great question! Depending on the size of the milkweed, it is generally better to clump them so caterpillars can move about. Caterpillars will at most range 20 to 30 feet. And a house would most likely block. Now if you want to be hands on…. You can then around as needed (my son did that). Hope that helps!

      @@WildFloridian It does help thanks. I have no problem moving them if needed. Hopefully I will get some. I have since heard from someone in my area who said hers are planted underneath a tree. I find that really surprising but if true that will be good as these will mostly be in a treeline garden. Thanks for the reply!

      😂 Native planta always belong in their native land, I’ve been doing some digging to see where tropical milkweed is native to in Mexico… big country… so similar to the US… it probably has a native range. I haven’t been able to find anything that tells me which states Mexico it is native to. So short answer is yes. I would just consider if the butterflies that are migrating are in a warm enough area to last the winter. I don’t know how OE will play out there. Is the growing pattern different because of the climate or is there something else in the ecosystem that changes the effects seen in the US? So many unanswered questions… which is a bummer. So if I were you, I would plant it. 😄

      They lay their eggs on plants in the citrus family 😁
      If you want to keep the butterflies in your yard but would rather them eat something else, you can plant:
      White Ash
      Hoptree
      Rue
      And Hercules Club

      I hope so too! I've heard the purchased ones may not migrate. There was a study that showed that monarchs raised inside and purchased didn't have strong migration tendencies. My understanding from other UA-cam gardening channels, is that milkweed is extremely invasive. You have to be prepared to constantly destroy the runners if it is near your vegetable garden or the lawn. 🙄

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 3 роки тому +6

      There are varieties such as Asclepias Incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) and Asclepias Tuberosa (Butterflyweed) that doesn't spread aggressively by root, only by seed and can be easily controlled by either deadheading the flowers after they've been pollinated or harvesting the seeds before they blow out of the pod and spread around your garden.
      Or you can just plant them in containers. Just get a large pot with good drainage to put them in, and plant at least 5 or 6 Milkweeds in it

      I put mine away from the vegetable garden in the corner of the yard that doesn’t get lawn sprinkler. It’s turned a weed patch into an intentional jungle of native plants! Good to know the plant’s grown habit and put it in a place where it can happily do its thing.

    • @WildFloridian

      Some... like common milkweed are known for spreading by runners. Swamp milkweed and butterfly weed are spread through seeds or manual propagation. I have had native swamp milkweed and aquatic milkweed for a couple years and haven't seen it spread. Hope that helps!

    • @ericajohnson3937
      @ericajohnson3937 Рік тому

      If milkweed is native to your area then it cannot be invasive. It might be aggressive, but that is very different than invasive.
