Monarch Butterflies are in Trouble… How To Raise Monarch Caterpillars!

  • It's finally the time of year where our garden is full of blooms and full of life! Each season, we make a specific effort to attract monarch butterflies to the garden by planting a large amount of milkweed plants. Luckily again for us this year, some monarchs have shown up and laid eggs on the plants! In today's video, we are going to show you how we like to set up and rear young monarch caterpillars in a protected enclosure to help ensure that they reach adulthood. Monarchs are a species of special concern and there is a real possibility that we could lose this species in the wild entirely within our lifetime. That is why we like to do everything that we can to help them out along the way! If you enjoy this video and want to show your support, hit the LIKE button and SUBSCRIBE to our channel for future videos like this in the future! Thanks so much for watching and we will see you on the next one!

Back in the early 1980's, I was out in Dad's back field in mid September in the late afternoon. The breeze was out of the south and the temp was about 80 degrees. I observed what looked like yellow leaves in the breeze, but realized that it was hundreds of Monarchs flying south, since they were going against the breeze. I paused to observe this. I would have never guessed that I would never see that again.

I live in the southernmost county of WV. I've loved Monarchs all my life. I began to notice about 5-6 years ago that I almost never saw them anymore. I educated myself and realized that the milkweed plants that were so plentiful here when I was a child seemed nonexistent! I ordered seed and began to cultivate it on my property. It has multiplied rapidly and to my heart's content I saw literally thousands of Monarchs this summer!

you guys are amazing! You not only have great energy to do the garden, but you do it in an ecologically friendly manner. Saving Monarch butterflies is such a worth while project. Your little zoo reminds me of my snake and turtle farm when I was in my early teens! Keep it up!

Love it! We used to do this as kids, although we used large peanutbutter jars with holes poked in the lids to let in air. Mom always had some of the large jars around come summer (I am the oldest of six), and we' head into the cow pasture behind the house in mid to late summer to find the monarch caterpillars!
That, and Mom's bird feeders, are some of the things that cultivated in me a love for God's creation! Your video today (and some others about this topic you've done before) brought fond memories rushing back in a flood.
Thank you both, as always. Love you and the videos and adventures you share! May God bless the three of you with all his very best, and prosper you always!

My son and I both planted Milk weed and a "butterfly" garden to help the Monarchs. I used to see a lot of them 40 years ago but only see an occasional one now. Until I watched one of your videos a couple years ago I didn't realize they had become endangered and that milkweed was key in their survival.

@@tommysmith9847 i do not know if that is the case...but it is very plausible...i haven't seen catawbas myself in quite a while..and where i have there isn't any spraying done..but we don't have old home places with old catawba tress much anymore either it seems..you would have to figure if a pesticide spray works on skeeters it would have to be bad on butterflies an caterpillars as well..hmm...i do know Cole n Jay have a few catawba worm vids on the channel.. I don't know if anyone has ever had the opportunity to see a monarch butterfly migration, but it is absolutely amazing. In 1962, a migrating "flock" of monarch butterflies picked the hard maple trees in our yard as a rest stop. Literally, 10s of thousands of butterflies. They landed early in the afternoon and by midmorning the next day the were all gone. My family only had a Kodac Brownie box camera with black and white film. The pictures absolutely did no justice to the scene. If we had only had a todays camera. Oh, the good old days.😒😒😒

We have a Swamp Milkweed garden. It’s one of our favorite things in the backyard. So easy to do and the Monarchs thrive. We get mostly the 4th hen that migrated to Mexico. Our main hatches are late September. We just got out first caterpillar last week and have been watching butterflies lay eggs.

Do you have a watering place for your pollinators? Bees and butterflies prefer some thing like a bird bath, but filled up with pea rock or coarse sand so they can land on that and use their proboscis to suck up the water. At a standard bird bath, they can fall in and drown. You are more humid where you are, and more rain, so maybe not much of a problem. I am in western Oregon and summer is our dry season, so essential here. I do have a creed on the edge of my property, so they do go down there to drink... Nice garden.

Three flowers now but it’s not the show you have because of the stunted start. But I was so excited! I literally sat last year and watched your garden video & wrote down the names of some of your flowers. I had tons of zinnias already but fell in love with the Mexican sunflowers! Going to harvest the seed. (Hopefully I get some seed) So I can grow more this next season. We have a dry heat here in Northern California. I think the humidity helps flowers back there because yours are twice as big! What kind of fertilizer do you use? Cypress is growing so fast! I found one on my parsley once it was so unusual looking that I just let it eat. I had a lot of it planted. When it turned into the green thing I brought it inside and was very surprised when it hatched into a monarch.

Monarchs do not eat parsley only Asclepias species aka Milkweed.

You know if someone were to send Cole a book how to build a pirogue by Nicholas Poret, maybe he'll build a pirogue to replace kayaks😉😉. Maybe with floatation and such built in. Kind of spur Cole to woodworking.😉

I'm in Texas and I've seen a few moarchs lately but I haven't seen any of the big swallow tail butterflies lately. I also don't have many thistle plants or a vegetable garden. My 4 o'clock plants are gone which the humming birds 🐦 liked and at night the hummingbird moths came out. They were kinda big and freaked me out!
