Long drive! Last time I rolled long in a Dodge truck it was a slant six. Mattress in the bed, no Internet, no A/C, no worries :-) Thanks for posting the trip!
Funny thing: I've been to at least 90% of the places you showed. Only when you got off the main road to go to the specific stops did I not recognize stuff. I said that to say here's one old man that can appreciate a good old road trip. Congratulations on your successful venture. My favorite leg was from Bend to Vale Oregon on US 20. Love that stretch.
I was born in Bend. I love that stretch of juniper and sage brush out east of Bend--though it seems longer every year! Saw it last October on our way home from the annular eclipse, and again earlier this year on the way to Plymouth. Stopping to see my mom if we're anywhere in the area, or can manage to be, is pretty much the order of the day these days.
@@ceridwenattwood5784 And as the years pass you will be increasingly glad to have gone to see her. It is admirable that you have instilled into your kids the importance of preserving and cherishing time spent with their elders.
35:52 Aww you missed the obligatory triple horn tap!! Also you barely missed the frog season going across nebarska. The last time I went through in June it was dark, drizzling off and on, and hot. This brought out hundreds of thousands of frogs from the ponds and whatnot on the sides of the road to come eat bugs going after headlights. Do know what happens when you mix that with a 12" section width tire at 80 mph? Popcorn! Or maybe miles of bubble wrap being squished at the same time. Either way my tank green wrangler was a dark brown when we got to our destination.
4:36 oh don't I know that. I towed my 72 from Boise to Springfield with my old dakota and got asked questions every stop. Got a dozen more questions taking it to the DMV to transfer the title 11:18 idk my 91 dakota had pretty good adjustable lumbar support
That was so cool getting to see my green pick up at the very end.Thank you for that very much.I appreciate it and I am so sorry that the bar was closed after the live stream was over with.I felt very bad about that for you guys. You very much deserved that nap.
America is cool. I enjoyed this roadtrip with you. too bad I grew up to a generation that didn't do road trips. but some of my favorite memories were in the back of a 90's subaru wagon
Watching / listening while replacing the oil cooler and headgaskets in a 6.0 powerstroke because the previous owner decided to use stop leak. I wish it was as reliable and resilient as a 6bt cummins. Great adventure thanks for sharing.
Ugh. Been there, done that - a few times. Are you pulling the cab or do you know the tricks? Haha. I never had a lift so I would always pull the fender plastics, vacuum reservoir and part of the heater box. Makes room for right side head bolts. My other truck was to use zip ties to hang those back ones in the heads/aluminum chunks as I installed them. This usually also involved a small dent on the driver side firewall. It can be done but it sucks
Prudence kept everything together well and you managed to stay ahead of that Dodge Demon behind you all the way, impressive, a little for the fuel recovery fund....
I attended a 'Saint Vitus' concert around 2012 or 2013. I had seen Scott 'Wino' Weinrich in Seaside CA for the opening night of the US tour with Conny Ochs. My son was like 13 and after talking with Scott I had gotten a photo of him with my son. So, a month+ later, he was playing in Sacramento with 'Saint Vitus'. I went down with some 8x12 of that photo to get autographed. We probably talked for like an hour+. He mostly wanted to talk about my son, as my son was taking guitar, bass, and harmonica lessons. Anyhow, I thought I was deaf in my left ear as it took three days for the pain to clear after that concert. My earplug had fallen out and I was standing in front of the Marshal stack.
Pretty sure you just used an epic green screen and filmed this whole thing from your house… that odometer never moved. You can’t fool me! 😂😂😂 in all seriousness what a fantastic trip! That old Cummins ate the miles and I’m impressed the auto trans stuck with you the whole time. From where that truck started to where it is now is absolutely amazing! Well done!
Yeah… I don’t think I would do that. Haha. They’re gutless and expensive. But they do get the fuel economy. I was planning to put a 4BT in a van, but that plan fell apart.
Tom could always sit in the Demon on the back, lots of seats there lol I love Prudence! - I do the same thing with belts, replace them early and throw the old one behind the seat. That pizza looked like it was from Pilot truck stops, oe of my favorite, I always get some when I go by one of those
Oh believe me, I threatened to put him back there. Haha. Yeah! Pilot’s pizza was my second favorite bite on the trip, with the first being spicy chicken sandwiches from the MacDagnal’s.
It was great to meet you in person Jamie. This video shows your entire journey was a win. By the way I wish I could have coordinated it better as I have the 5x4 bolt pattern Moser axles that @JustMoparJoe will be replacing with a set of 5x4.5 on my Cuda. Perfect replacement for the Demon. Also my 5X4 bolt pattern disc brakes. Hope to meet you again someday my friend.
Well I do still need good axles. Haha. But they wouldn’t have fit my Cragars with the 1/2” studs. Anyway, thanks again! And that could certainly happen. I plan to end up in that area more in the future.
I just had Rex Hutchinson Machine Shop make two new bushing/sleeves for the butterfly on my exhaust brake. Backpressure was leaking around one side to where I had no braking from it. I'd met and known Rex since the late 1960s when he raced drag boats against a family friend in the Bay Area (Alamada CA). Rex passed away about 8 years ago. His son Glenn is running the show now.
The multiple cars that I have built over the years have had 4 speeds and automatics in each one, small blocks, big blocks. I like them street strip capable, auto with a high stall converter is limited for street, 4 speed is always fun. Yeah you break some stuff but you eventually weed out the week links but have way more fun doing it, good luck with your classic drag race setup, Cheers!
I have run the same set up and I have broken the same thing the only difference was I was running NOS when it broke. I agree with you that you need practice and I hope that you will keep having fun. When you stop have fun it starts to feel like a job. Don't stop and don't give in and get rid of the 4 speed. Thank you for the videos and I look forward to seeing more of them.
It took two corn dogs and a bowl of hot buttered popcorn to watch the show. Good job Jamie, you made it there and back without too many issues, except for your Demon that sucked. 🇺🇲
What a great truck, way to go building that. Sure, a few issues but that thing rocks, you will get it all fixed up as things are figured out, you are creative and smart at fixing things.
Yes, was kinda a long video, but it was great! Lovin' every minute of it! Can't wait to see the third member come out of the Demon, find out what happened. Thanks again for entertaining my brain! ❤
When you said orange warlock it reminded me of my 77 black warlock I had handed down to me by my late mother when I got my driver's license 28 years ago. I miss it. Stupid me sold it off because I bought 91 ram a few years later.😅 😅
In college I had a friend that has a orange duster 340 4speed. He said he drag raced it with a 4.56. When it met him he ha 4.10 on the street. Still had the line lock. Helped him tear down the engine after it broke. Four out a rod bolt came loose. Lil Boddah was it's name
Also that bridge thing is the Kearney archway monument, the “gateway to the west” it’s got a pretty neat museum that takes you from fort Kearney to the original Lincoln highway all the way to the interstate system in interactive displays
Oh that's cool. I was actually reading about the Lincoln Highway on the trip because I heard it mentioned on a podcast, and it turned out I was essentially following its route for quite a while at the time I heard about it and looked it up.
epic feature film. you had an epilogue. next one needs a prelude and intermission (for beverage). awesome video and great job. with regards to racing, practice will make perfect. if you want to be good at anything it takes time and experience.
Hell ya been waiting to watch this one. ALL HAIL THE CUMMINS 12v!!!!!! And if you do end up making the nose tilt on this truck I will watch more than once lol.
For coolant leaks, the ABSOLUTE BEST I have found for stopping the leak is going to sound crazy, but it is regular EVAPORATED MILK from the grocery store. It works amazing and is cheaper than the ones sold as stop leak at parts stores or gas stations. It is the only form of stop leak that is approved for use by John Deere that won't void their warranty and if they accept it for using in equipment that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, I think it can be trusted. I put it in 2 vehicles over 5 years ago and neither of them have leaked since and nothing other than the leaks was plugged by it. One of those leaks was a radiator and the other was a head gasket. Both still run great and haven't lost any coolant.
@@DeadDodgeGarage The way to do it is to fill the radiator most of the way with coolant but leave enough room for a couple of cans of regular evaporated milk. Start the car with the radiator cap off and let it idle until you can see the coolant has started to flow as the thermostat has opened. Pour in one can of the evaporated milk and put the radiator cap on. Either let it sit there idling or go for a ride for about 15 -- 20 minutes but watch the temperature. Look for any signs of continued leaking. Turn it off and let it cool and if there is no more leaking just top off the radiator and you are good to go. The person I learned it from did it on his Lincoln V-12 that had a cracked block. 11 years later and it still hadn't lost a drop of coolant when he sold the car. It only sets up where there are leaks and it works fantastic. If you have ever done any cooking with evaporated milk, you know how hard it sets up in the pot around the top of where the liquid was at and it is almost impossible to get that ring out of the pot. Yet it doesn't set up anywhere other than where the leaks are and it can even be painted over on the engines if desired. The regular radiator stop leaks at parts stores can plug the cooling tubes in heater cores and in radiators which you don't want to happen, whereas evaporated milk does not plug anything but the leaks. If you try it, let me know what you think. Personally I would flush that stuff you already poured in the truck out of it before it causes issues, but that's me...lol. Once the milk is in it, theres no reason to flush it until it is time to replace the coolant for normal maintainance, and if you arent one who replaces your coolant per the auto makers recomendations, it dont worry about it. Let me know how it goes
@@DeadDodgeGarage Every now and then you may have read or heard some old timer talking about using "Pet Milk" to fix a coolant leak and wondered what that was about. Well, now you know because that's what this is
I know I recommend a dana 80 rear swap in a previous video which would still be an upgrade and I think you can get like a 3:20 something gear replacement for them which would be super minty for a truck like this. Otherwise there is always the elusive 307 gear rear axles that came behind the 89-91 727 cummins trucks. 307s with an over drive would make a great cruising truck and probably get great mileage as well.
I’m keeping an eye out for an ‘01-02 Dana 80 with disk brakes. It should be wider than the first gen axle which will make room for air bags. That will solve all of my problems in one move.
That's what I put in my in my 83 crewcab with a cummins. Although it's technically a rear brake delete because I was too cheap and lazy to replace all the disc components for now. That can be a winter job😂
The TSC boxes are a nice fit - very clean and tidy. My '80 Dodge surfer van had an 11 meter band (CB) radio - an AR3500 with a Francis antenna. The rooftop offered a nice ground plane - the radio did over 140 watts on SSB (measured) and could reach Costa Rica from Malibu, Cal. The 360 alternator had no problems charging RV batteries (Die Hards) on the system.
There's a nice race track near St. Louis. Lots of shopping malls and Gateway Classics. I'm surprised you didn't visit the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I had the opportunity to drive across most of the country about 3 times this year - I noticed very few EV charging stations, if any but LOTS of gas stations - brand new BIG service plazas and Bucky's (Worlds Best Restrooms...). Just wondering if you noticed the same thing?
They’re fine tools. Haha. We ran our whole shop with that set for quite a while. The box is ruined - both matches are completely gone, so it’s screwed shut now - and some important tools are missing. But it gets the job done.
I wish I had the guts to drive my 93 D350 even 120 miles from the house. It is in good shape, but I'm never sure what is going to fail. I made it through the 111 minutes of the video. Time to go make a pot of chili. Hopefully the meat has defrosted.
I am a little jealous of your cooling. My first gen dodge that I had was a 91 non intercooled but it would run at 3/4 mark if I was doing any sort of work with it
That's interesting. I've never had any do that. Have to wonder what was going on there... these things are usually super cold blooded and don't tend to get hot.
I transitioned away from the E level front tires to 265/75R16 with an additional 15% weight rating on the front to make them legal, and use 35x14.5R16.5LT on a 12" rim in the rear that has a better weight rating than duals. Rides smoother all around. Trouble is carrying two spares of different sizes
I really like using 'K-Seal ST5516 Heavy-Duty' coolant seal. I have a slight crack somewhere in the head and it solves the problem perfectly. I think it is more of a copper based product vs. aluminum or whatever

Good to know. Haha. It would be friggin’ awesome, and I guarantee one of a kind…
It took me 2 days but I watched the whole thing!
Thanks, Tony!
Thanks for the shoutout as well!
I haven’t heard that one. That’s brilliant! Yeah, if it’s good enough for John Deere, it’s good enough for this POS. Haha.
Oh wow. That’s a lot of juice. Haha.
Man what a helluva road trip, btw the pyramid in Memphis has live alligators in it
😮🤯
This trip had it all, trains, a tunnel, clouds that looked like teeth and lot's of Dodge stuff!
That’s right!
Epic road trip, a way fewer problems than Colin had on his road trip! Can't wait for the autopsy video.
Coming to a screen near you tomorrow!
I installed a Fleece Performance fuel sending unit. So far so good.
Iowa must be a State of. Mind. You've centered it from many different places it doesn't border on twilight zone trip .
Awesome trip video you are the man! 💯🏁🇺🇸
I’m so sad I didn’t get to meet you at mopars in the park! I swear that I saw you and it obviously was you!
Dang it! If it’s any consolation, I was barely conscious, mostly deaf, and probably not making much sense after the cannonball drive from Tennessee.
BEAUTIFUL!
There's a nice race track near St. Louis. Lots of shopping malls and Gateway Classics. I'm surprised you didn't visit the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota.
No I didn’t have that kind of time. Haha.
Watched the whole thing man, very entertaining, ready to see what happened to the Demon...great job buddy 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
Thanks! Autopsy video coming tomorrow!
Ozark Mo. 🎉i see that green duster evertday on my way to work...neat
Yep! I'll be damned!
🎥Videography for the generations to come ⛽️👌🏼
I expected more drama. Two thumbs up.
Of course after the cab parts change, you'll have the hauler and car both paint match? That would be pretty cool
Oh yeah. That would be the plan.
28:19 Hey….I like my Silver Eagle tool sets. I have two. I have American and European cars so they work in all of them!
They’re fine tools. Haha. We ran our whole shop with that set for quite a while. The box is ruined - both matches are completely gone, so it’s screwed shut now - and some important tools are missing. But it gets the job done.
Epic video J
I wish I had the guts to drive my 93 D350 even 120 miles from the house. It is in good shape, but I'm never sure what is going to fail. I made it through the 111 minutes of the video. Time to go make a pot of chili. Hopefully the meat has defrosted.
I am a little jealous of your cooling. My first gen dodge that I had was a 91 non intercooled but it would run at 3/4 mark if I was doing any sort of work with it
That's interesting. I've never had any do that. Have to wonder what was going on there... these things are usually super cold blooded and don't tend to get hot.
Maybe too small of a radiator? It would run half way at all times but ran good and pulled good.
Small world for sure. Phantom Fireworks originated here in our town of Boardman Ohio. I think the corporate headquarters are still here.
Cool - on the cover
I transitioned away from the E level front tires to 265/75R16 with an additional 15% weight rating on the front to make them legal, and use 35x14.5R16.5LT on a 12" rim in the rear that has a better weight rating than duals. Rides smoother all around. Trouble is carrying two spares of different sizes
Aww...I love the die-cast collection a dead dodge garage world headquarters secondary office (shop is primary I'm sure). Lol
Thx J!
1st gen Cummins don't ride great but you gotta love them
You may want to pack a spare center section, I have a feeling…lol
I really like using 'K-Seal ST5516 Heavy-Duty' coolant seal. I have a slight crack somewhere in the head and it solves the problem perfectly. I think it is more of a copper based product vs. aluminum or whatever
I prefer K-seal myself, but they didn’t have it.
I've been waiting for this vlog 🌎
I genuinely commend you for making this trek , Jamie 🏁

How & why do vehicles rot out so severely in Iowa ? Even the late models ?

It’s gotta be the road salt in Iowa… it’s real bad. Bonneville seats, interesting. I’ve been window shopping fourth gen Dodge buckets, they look like a fair choice. But I bet there are much cheaper alternatives that would be great.
48:11 reaction, you like trains and old cars. We might be distant relatives.....
1:03:58 nothing is blown up yet. 😂
The puddles all over Nebraska are old gravel quarries that get turned into lakefront “snob hill” type places
Rooster must live near me in Rochester mn
He sure does. Outside Byron to be more specific
I do indeed on the west side of Rochester between Byron and Rochester watch for the boats on 14😂
That D600 grain truck you saw with Tom from Rocket on your trip was begging for a Cummins swap and to be a ramp truck.
