Cheerio! Years in radio gave you such a clear voice I love to listen to, combined with your sense of fun and adventure. Ever so educational and fun to watch.
I was on tenterhooks the whole time you were sawing. This episode was a real nail biter. I'm pleased you didn't muck it up. I anxiously await your next installment.
Hi David, love the way you explain the whys and wherefores. Also love that you talk, almost as if you are talking to yourself, when you are doing tasks. It gives insight into how you are assessing and translating the aspects of the task. I am technologically and mechanically challenged. Hubby often explains why and what he is doing while I hold tools, and this is how I learn. I appreciate that you do the same. Totally enjoying your van build
Funnily enough, that is *exactly* who I'm talking to. Though it might seem otherwise, I'm honestly being so bold as to presume I can explain anything to the viewer, I'm actually doing so to myself, to reassure me about what I'm doing!!
There were some suspenseful moments during this vlog. I’m glad it all worked out in the end. Also I liked your defense of doing it yourself at the beginning of the vlog.
My husband and I recently got caught up on the Cruising the Cut videos, (we just found them a couple of months ago and watched a few each evening) and have started this series. I’m looking forward to seeing how the camper van turns out, but don’t want to skip ahead! It’s very interesting to watch your progress and we’re impressed with your dedication in wanting to do the work yourself.
Oooh ! cutting holes in the van !!! 1) leave video to buffer 2) make a cup of tea in the mean time 3) watch video and remember to upvote. Brilliant video; nice to see you don't do diy the way I do - measure twice, cut once, swear a lot and go looking for another door....
Well done. I don't know (nor much care, actually) if I have mentioned it, but if I make it through April next I will be 80 winters and much of that time was spent tearing stuff apart and putting most of it back together in a different (if not improved) fashion. I'll spare you all the full catalog of houses, parts of houses, cars, pickup trucks, radios (including transmitters and transceivers),.... Suffice to say that I am imminently qualified to be very impressed with the preparation and raw courage you display in your (old school use of the term) hacking your van.
Well done. If you ever need to do something similar, check out some adhesive (kind of Velcro stickers) called scotch lock. You stick them on the window, do a dry fit with spacers at the edges. Apply your glue or sealant and lock the Glas (or board etc) on place. Works only if you have some spare space. We use them in a bigger version for truck and RV windshields. Cherrio :-)
Just fascinating to watch - and you seem to have thought of everything (minus the ear defense). You sometimes give the impression of not being competent but this vlog shows the truth.
Another good job done, there's no need to be too picky, the few mm of the RH window won't be noticed by anyone but you. Your van is coming along nicely, and it will all be done pretty well, and as a bonus because it's all your own work, you'll know absolutely everything about your fit out, and you can be even more proud of your van and yourself for having done the whole project yourself, and as another bonus, no other people to pay for the work you really didn't need their help for.
Absolutely super, my dear😊👍👍👍 Wish that I had known about such possibilities 25 years ago , when converting our ancient VW Transporter (not sure if she was a T2? was like a box on wheels😁) into a van (only to carry people in the back) according to German regulations😕 We cut, and put in windows in GB, but the whole caboodle had to be done again here😕 She ('Old Green') was wonderful for travelling, (going back to England ), but unfortunately, when living here, was an absolute 'petrol guzzler'😕 She unfortunately had to go, much to my boys' disappointment, but there you go! Those were our 'more adventurous days'😊 Thanks so much for your video 😊 Most appreciated ☺👍👍👍 All love, and best wishes, Claire, Berlin 😘 ✌
I must say, I'm very impressed (even 2,5 years later). When I saw the rubber strip, I just expected a simple window that you'd put in that rubber strip, but this looks very professional, great job. About the ear protection: I'm only 27, but already learned that you really only have 1 set of eyes and ears, so protect them at all cost, no matter how uncomfortable or silly it may look. I know a kid who didn't even reach the age of 18 before he lost an eye, because he wasn't wearing safety glasses.
I suspect the professionals do it much the same way, precisely because this style of window looks pretty good, and can’t really be off too much because it naturally falls into place. Pro just means you do it a lot, not that you pay attention to details!
Excellent work. I did aircraft sheet metal work for 10 years, would be happy to have you on any crew I ever worked on. I really applaud the idea of doing this yourself, I have always been of the opinion that we rely too much on experts...one can do amazing things with patience and diligent study...again, very nice work.
I love your prep (in every aspect of the build so far) and how tidy and precise you try to be. That insulation was a thing of beauty! And these windows! You are fearless!
Yay! well done David. Sometimes overthinking leads to procrastination. Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and crack on. And conversely anticipation is sometimes more exciting than actually acquiring something. Life's funny like that. Anyway just wanted to say excellent video again and you made it look so easy. 👍👍
I have a great deal of respect for your have a go attitude. When I first start watching your (canal boat) vlogs you were clearly not comfortable with DIY and I am afraid it was a little obvious. Since then though you have had a go at all sorts of things and clearly gained confidence and skill, and most importantly you enjoy it. Bravo.
A thoroughly enjoyable watch, this is really getting me in the mood to do another build soon. You are absolutely right about the noise, It’s unbelievably loud isn’t it? I fitted all my van windows on a single Saturday, and my ears were ringing for several days afterward, like you, I thought I might have damaged them. I will definitely be using ear defenders next time. Really enjoying this build unfold a little more each episode, you’re doing a cracking job, and I may be taking quite a few tips away from this series to apply to my next build, so thank you.
Good job! Do it yourself for sure. Even a slightly bodged job is worth putting up with for the satisfaction of knowing its your project and you built it yourself. Although i must say it looks like you did very well!
A really great vlog, I enjoy watching your work. You make it look so easyish, considering I'm like you and never done this before in my life. I look forward to your next piece of work, keep it up, thank you. Gary.
I second your call to use proper hearing protection. The damage from noise exposure is cumulative, as I know first hand from many years in metal working.
Years back I converted a bus to a motorhome . The things that helped were research , planning and talking over the plan if I had questions and taking my time. From what I have seen you are comfortable with tools even if still learning. I think you will get frustrated at times but, when it is done you will feel quite satisfied. Good luck, Hal
I must admit that the window installation appears to have been done with professional results, I am impressed . Well done for a rookie. Keep up the good work.
A fabulous account of your glazing “feats of daring doo” to get rear windows into the van. Although I plan to go coach built you never know. Loving your almost ‘dead pan’ delivery of tongue in cheek humour: great entertainment and the useful content for those taking this kinda conversion on is brill!
Was it at belle Vue Manchester. We were there. When we went to the car park switch on the engine and had to go and lift the bonnet to see if the engine was running as we couldn't hear it. Lol
Good Job I have ringing in my ear for working in a machine shop. At first I didn't wear ear protection but learn to wear them. Today that ringing never stops. The more wore out get the louder it gets. Always Wear Ear Protection or suffer like I do.
Congratulations to you for even attempting something so important. I'm glad to hear that they don't leak. You had done a great job & if you hadn't pointed that other window being a little off I wouldn't of even noticed. Job well done. Chris
Been following your CtC VLOG since inception. Just found this. Bravo! Since I am a somewhat dysfunctional DIYer (not implying anything here!), my acid test of my work is whether anything has fallen off. Hats off to your work ethic and your seemingly intrepid plunge into the unknown waters. Keep up the good work.
The point you made at the very start of the video is true about life in general - theres few things in life that you can cock up beyond all recovery - I'd imagine making the switch to narrowboat life is something that for some people they would never attempt because they were put off by the "what if's". I admire your drive to "give it a go" - after all, you only get one shot at life and you seem to be living it the way you want, which a lot of people could learn from :). Keep up the great work.
I'm guessing you watched alot of YT videos on installing van windows...great job! Kudos on your bravery in tackling another project on your van. .won t be long now before you hit the road😊
David, what a brave person you are! I would not have the intestinal fortitude to do this type of installation. Good Job, and congratulations, from your Scottsdale Arizona, Fan.
You could do this as a little side line, not that you would have the time...or a garage....Well done...looks fab...your going to hate potholes until your fully confident...looking forward to seeing more...
Brilliant. Loving these videos. Very relaxing, and informative. Keep them coming, David. I am not much of a one for DIY, but the way you explain it, and the pace of the filming, make me think "I could do that, you know!" I subscribed to Cruising The Cut, first, months ago, and have just discovered these. Thanks for the content, sir!
That is a fantastic job you have done there, a very well done! And someone has already given the tip but i second it, put the tubes of bond (gunge) in very hot almost boiling water to make it easier to apply. Well done that man! 👍
Top job! Would be pleased with that level of work from a professional! Quite a DIYer myself. Some projects, especially the first time, Dunning-Kruger is very real. If you're not trepiditious before you start, it's probably because you don't truly understand what you're getting yourself into. Hacking a hole in the side of your van definitely qualifies!
Grand job David - you must be justifiably proud of yourself. :-) Nice to see you chose a colour coordinated set of ear defenders to blend in with your suite of power tools.
David, excellent job! I would never dare try this kind of thing! Inversely, do you know how many vanlife videos I've watched of people having their back windows permanently covered or replaced with metal panels so that they no longer function as windows? There's a lot more stealth camping going on in the US than in the UK.
Very good idea using a bag around the magnet. I've never though of that. I've spent a good 10-20 minutes before, cleaning a magnet that I had used to clean something else up.
Really enjoyed hanging out with you via video while you accomplished this project. You are inspiring me to take on some projects I might have otherwise farmed out.
Excellent video as always! I really enjoy watching your videos and I really appreciate how informational you are! I can't wait for your next video! From you biggest Wisconsin,US fan!
I don't think I could ever have done that. I would have been so nervous that I'd have had to fortify myself to the point of being as wobbly as the camera. You will be able to say, as you drive around this summer, that you did it yourself and the windows haven't fallen out. Yet.
At no time did I doubt your ability to successfully install these windows. Well done David! I use small plastic wedges at the bottom and on one side to ensure an even gap. The thin end of the wedges are cut away during the "dry fit" stage leaving only the correct thickness for the desired gap.
Wedges would have been a good idea. I did stuff some cardboard below the window which you can just see me doing in the speeded-up bit but I didn't have anything proper to go in there.
Irony: Just watched your video on the gear box bolts on the boat backing out, and reading people in an uproar because you didn't DIY it etc.... looks excellent btw!
Congratulations 🎊👏🎊👏🎊👏. This was an absolutely riveting? episode/vlog. I peered into my screen just willing everything to be ALL RIGHT. And it was !! Courageous 😬 work, Mr Vandemonium !
Windows installed successfully
Restart your van to apply updates!
Hahaha, love it!
Oh, that is clever.🤣
I'm pleased too!
David, I just installed windows in my own van and would never have had the confidence to do so without your videos, so thanks!
Crikey well I hope the install went well and they're leak-free!
You are one brave man Mr Johns. My underpants were £4.50 and my bum managed to eat three quids worth whilst watching that. Well done David, well done.
Stuart Harris. Thanks for the laugh.
It was a tense vlog Louise. lol
We absolutely love the fact you are determined to have a go at everything (you can) yourself. Great vlog!
Thank you!

Nice job David. What’s that? I SAID NICE JOB DAVID.

I like your ‘give it a go’ attitude, as that’s exactly what I’m like.
a tip when using a caulking tube pierce a little hole in the end of it on the inside, makes it alot easier to push it out
Well done. I don't know (nor much care, actually) if I have mentioned it, but if I make it through April next I will be 80 winters and much of that time was spent tearing stuff apart and putting most of it back together in a different (if not improved) fashion. nice hint on the magnet in the plastic bag. 76 years old and learning every day.
Thanks 👍

It appears you did an excellent job. I must admit it turned out better than I expected! They are very attractive windows on the outside, eh?
Those windows look great. They look like original equipment. Well done.
Thank you very much!
An excellent job, impressive. You can’t see that tiny misalignment from any distance
Well done, so nice of that woman to assist you in your efforts.
That is a good install, you are right other than 54 k of your closest friends no one will ever know about the gaffer tape.
I loved the magnet in a bag trick! That surely qualifies for the Top Tip award. 8-)
I can't claim credit for it, I got that from someone else!

I applaud you for trying things. A good part of the many hobbies I do, started with "I wonder if I can do that...?"
Good job, old bean. I cringed when your neighbour put her grubby glove on your freshly applied primer. Aaack!!!
The primer is applied to the inside of the window, if I'm not mistaken.
I am impressed how good that looks and how brave you are doing this work.
Great job. I was praying that it wouldn't start pouring with rain while you had two holes in the back of your van!
I must admit that the window installation appears to have been done with professional results, I am impressed . Well done for a rookie. Keep up the good work.
Good job, well done, I liked the safety message at the end.
ps your like / dislike buttons are not working :(
vandemonium is also very informative.
Love to see the boat in the background

The magnet clean up idea was brilliant mate 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Well done David! Great job 👍🏻
Went to a Motorhead concert in a nightclub in the 80's and my ears were still ringing 24 hours later. Proper worried for a while.

I think I watched every YT video there is about it, several times over!
I really like that attitude.
When you had the ringing in your ears, its a good job it wasn't warning bells. Great job, well done.
Excellent job . Totally impressed with your gung ho approach !
David, what a brave person you are! I would not have the intestinal fortitude to do this type of installation. Good Job, and congratulations, from your Scottsdale Arizona, Fan.
Good idea with the ear defenders. Tinnitus sucks.
You could do this as a little side line, not that you would have the time...or a garage....Well done...looks fab...your going to hate potholes until your fully confident...looking forward to seeing more...
I've taken it (gingerly) down the very rutted canalside track and up to 70 on the motorway. So far, so good!
Doing a great job there Dave and lets face it you are at the mercy of the elements so well done . A great inspiration
I love your assistant.
Excellent work, David. Hooray indeed! 😀
They look brilliant! You should be really proud of yourself. And they’ve had an extreme test with all the snow and storm Emma! Well done!
I love this one. It is funny (dive mask problems, ear pops) and educational. Thanks for a great vid.
Brilliant. Loving these videos. Very relaxing, and informative. Keep them coming, David.

Very impressive Dave. You are right, doing it yourself is have the fun of it.
Good effort David, nicely done. The shards you keep refering to is "swarf". Look forward to the next blog.
Holding my breath there. Phew you did it.
Great job. They look good. Enjoying the films. Thanks for sharing with us. Davin
Top job! Would be pleased with that level of work from a professional!

Very good instructions..i was always wondering how difficult it would be to do that.
The finished job looks amazing..well done.
Very professional delivery. Reminds me of grand designs!
Well done, Health & Safety is a pain, but as you have found out the hard way, Well worth it.
Grand job David - you must be justifiably proud of yourself. :-) Nice to see you chose a colour coordinated set of ear defenders to blend in with your suite of power tools.
Nice tidy job David, well done .
Thank you, most kind neighbour?
Well done with the windows - even Greg Virgo, the “Ultimate ‘go -to’ for site for diy van building” didn’t install his own windows!!
Hahaha yeah, what does he know, eh? 😂😂😂
Very instructive, thank you for the detailed information!
David, excellent job! I would never dare try this kind of thing! Inversely, do you know how many vanlife videos I've watched of people having their back windows permanently covered or replaced with metal panels so that they no longer function as windows? There's a lot more stealth camping going on in the US than in the UK.
Yep totally agree it's all part of life's journey thumbs up if u get it wrong it ok it's all part of learning
"Cover that with a bit of Gaffer tape and noone will ever now", EXCEPT 51.661 people have been told about it :)
Very good idea using a bag around the magnet. I've never though of that. I've spent a good 10-20 minutes before, cleaning a magnet that I had used to clean something else up.
David, Great job. Looks almost professional
Super job David, enjoying the project as much you👍
Really enjoyed hanging out with you via video while you accomplished this project. You are inspiring me to take on some projects I might have otherwise farmed out.
Excellent! Hope they go well for you.
Very nice work.
Thanks for showing us how.
Carry On
Very well executed.
Best video so far well done that man 🐕
Looks pretty darn good to me!
Looks like you found yourself a new trade to go into van conversions
Great job. I’d be frightened to slam the doors if I’d done that. It’s looking good. Thanks for the update.
Haha, I'm still shutting them quite gently even now!
Great job bro, they look like they came with the van. All the best
Excellent video as always! I really enjoy watching your videos
and I really appreciate how informational you are! I can't wait for your next video! From you biggest Wisconsin,US fan!
Jolly Good! It didn't look so hard...You did it!
I don't think I could ever have done that. I would have been so nervous that I'd have had to fortify myself to the point of being as wobbly as the camera. You will be able to say, as you drive around this summer, that you did it yourself and the windows haven't fallen out. Yet.
