73. Cutting the campervan worktop for the new sink

- While the new diesel heater ran for two hours as per the installation instructions, I didn't want to leave it unattended so I turned my attention to cutting the new worktop including holes for the sink and tap (faucet).

I agree about not trimming it. It is like cutting hair. You keep trimming until you have none left.

Glad to see it worked out well. Before staining may I suggest sanding the overhang at the front half round to help with the towels.

Nice, a David-Video on saturday, so I can enjoy it without being half-asleep after a day of working!
As for your van: I like it, despite myself probably wanting a bigger one (if I ever do a conversion) - so a Mercedes Sprinter or something like that, with parking-sensors (park-distance-control and maybe even a camera for reversing as I am not the best driver, especially for anything larger than a regular car! I can drive a van, did so for work in the past, but I never felt comfy without sensors - luckily most of the vans did have them and the camera!)...I'd also want a shower inside and easily accessible wiring (so cable-ducts, like in new homes...hell, I installed a LAN-Network here in my apartment before moving in and it was a pain in the butt...but in a house build in the 60s there is no cable ducts you can simply add additional wiring and installing cable ducts into the walls would have been too messy, so I screwed some onto the walls...but if I ever build something, it'll get easily accessible cable ducts, so maintenance is easy, as is installing new things!), with an electronics-cupboard with fuses and all that!
I however commend your move away from GAS! Gas is something I am not comfortable with (sure I do have camping cookers with gas, but only because they are convenient - in a vehicle or house I prefer electric cookers and ovens!)...I've once seen a foto of a gas-main-explosion! Not pretty unless you like shattered glas, ripped up streets etc.!

You did it! That cliffhanger from last time had nothing to do with the actual main topic of this time. Great entertainment and real fun to watch - - apart from the actual infromation that is also contained in this video!
For full disclosure: I am planning with quite a limited budget to somehow get me (with however much diy) a campervan. The first - and only planned - task for it will be to get me from my native Germany through northern France, on a ferry to Ireland. Then for several months through Ireland then ferry over to Scotland and spend another few months there, before travelling south through England in certainly more than 2 weeks time and then back over the Channel, through the Nederlands and home to Germany. The whole endeavour is meant to take up 5 to 7 months.
Some of the content of this channel has already been taken in and been added to my being sure what I want and what I don't want in my van. So for you: mission accomplished!

I enjoyed that! Well done David! There was a comedian once who talked about 'inside words' and 'outside words' (or similar). I think it was a Carry On film?? Your 'outside words' are so well spoken, but every so often, an 'inside word' slips out and it is quite hilarious!
Another tip I just thought of is that you should probably switch out the pipe that goes from the sink to the waste water container to a smooth one. Regardless of what you intend to wash down the drain, water will get caught in the creases of that pipe and go stagnant. It could end up smelling a bit if left for too long.

If you drill a hole that just intersects the hole saw's cutting circle, it will give the cuttings somewhere to escape. Makes it go much faster, and the saws last a lot longer.

Seeing your installation of the diesel heater plus, seeing another UA-camr suggesting these heaters can be used as backup heat for the house, prompted me to buy one. I was presently surprised at how economical they are to purchase, run, and they are fairly clean burning compared to a diesel engine. Since all of the combustion gasses are piped outside, they provide good quality heat.
I love watching your films David. I spend almost the entire time with a sort of smirk on my face. I can't explain it - it could be a "What IS he doing?" smirk, or a "What AM I doing with my life?" smirk, but there's a smirk none-the-less. As ever; thanks for sharing your journey with us. Can't wait for the 'Cooking [not] on gas' episode. :)

Hi David, well done on the counter top. The water spots on the tap are a easy fix. Just place a paper towel wet with white vinegar over the area for a few minutes,then wipe off.
Some oak coverstrip, round edge on the edges of the work top will cover many evils. A quick whizz with a plane of sander and it will look lovely.
That would be far too professional for my DIY!!
@@Vandemonium Well it does cost $10 for 2.4 metres, so don't go over capitalising that van. If only my video production could match yours David I'd do a video of if. I just can't get organised enough to do a job then video it too.

I've started using a full face one because every garden trim inevitably gets me in the eye. Not to mention the wire from a wire wheel that embedded itself in the tip of my nose. 4 mm either way and it would have been a hospital job.
Bodgers paradise: scribe a line on the bits of the worktop that are too long and use a belt sander on the worktop to fair it back to the line 🙂- you end up with a beautifully smooth end at exactly the right length- a lot less skill needed than a plane
If only I had a belt sander!

Well done. FYI in the future you can avoid tearing the wood on the underside from a hole saw by going only 1/2 way through and then drilling from the backside. Also, not cutting all the way through gives the sawdust more of a chance to escape via the shallower depth. Thus no burning. All the best.

I've ben on tenterhooks waiting for a video on making a new work surface - now it's finally arrived. Phew!
That's not that much lime scale. A little white vinegar will take care of it easily. I have hard water and if it isn't horrible the vinegar works great. If it's really bad I have to move on to chemicals which I hate. All and all, a good days work and it looks great.
Story idea: How about a video on renting and using a camper van in Great Britain? Selfishly, we are spending a good chunk of this September touring the island and, being RV experienced here in the states would love your perspective. Maybe an interview with a rental company with a few how-tos on finding camping sites, replenishing water, dumping waste, etc.
Cheers; probably not something I'd do on this channel. Your best bet for sites are websites like pitchup.com or the big caravan/motorhome clubs (some of which accept non-members for a higher fee). Be prepared for tiny pitches where you're all clumped together just a few feet from your neighbours, it's not like the USA where there's acres of space between sites!!

Try US product "Lime Away" for water/metal scaling, it is slightly enviro "green" vs. CLR.
Vinegar works wonders on limescale in kettles taps, showers stalls in other words on lime anywhere
User-tf: Lemon juice is great, and it's NOT poisonous

A mild acid like vinegar should remove the lime scale.
I would have trimmed the end of the top by sanding rather than jig saw. Jig saw blades flex a lot when trying to cut less a width less than the thickness of the blade. I have experienced this the hard way.
The fan running after the burner has shut off is normal to cool down the heater.

For someone who says he's not much of a DIYer I think you're well on the way to being a damn good one.
If you need to quiet that fuel pump just stiffen the plywood with some glued on strips of wood. I doubt you need to - but in the middle of the night when you are trying to sleep?

You could also possibly keep your sink negative to use as a cover. Not sure how useful that tiny extra bit of bench-top would ever be. You seem to use a kitchen very economically :)

Nice job. The sink is bigger? but you appear to have more countertop available. I know you have the induction hob to fit yet. I dont know when you videoed this clip, but an option to the stain and varnish would be vinyl contact sheet in granite or wood effect. I hit on the idea when I was trying to renovate some old speakers and keep them looking as close to original as possible. Probably look well on a flat surface and easy to change if you get tired looking at it. B&Q I think I got it. Mind you a coat of paint or varnish will help it stick better. Looking good for the summer jaunts.
More counter top because of no dual propane hobs any more!
As a machinist, your comment about 'why measure when you can just eyeball it' made me twitch a little. I'm curious to see how your induction cook top works out and what the battery life is like.
