The lesson you are about to watch with Matt will apply to so many of you who are struggling with the driver, either distance or accuracy.
Matt was missing one key move in his downswing, something I see all the time from my students, but once we had integrated this one move into Matt's swing he suddenly gained distance all whilst hitting the ball straighter too.
In my experience this is a really mis understood part of the golf swing, your arms play a huge role in the shape of your swing, using them efficiently can give some incredible results and I hope that the case for you after watching this video
Enjoy and as always any questions or comments leave those below as i try to get back to everyone

one of the most simple and best videos I have seen. Great work!
One of the best golf lessons I've ever seen!
Superb video. You break down technical points into understandable keys. Best golf coach on UA-cam.
Great drill that snap the shaft one. Have seen Rory do that with his driver and he's one of the best - good stuff, another one for range this week, thanks
I am convinced you are spying on my rounds Chris, you release EXACTLY the right video at EXACTLY the right time!
I am, hiding behind the tees and greens…. Always watching 😁
Excellent instruction! Love it.
素晴らしい動画をありがとうございます!ちょうど悩んでいたポイントだったので早速練習してみます!
As a low handicap golfer (5) I lost my swing over the last year or so. I developed an over the top move that I couldn’t help or lose. I watched this video and had a range session before a competition and I struck the ball the best I had done since losing my swing. Still a work in progress but I am so relieved and happy to be striking it how I used to.
As a 3.5 index I can totally relate. This fixed my over the top pull and increased distance for all my clubs, 15 yards on my driver.
This worked really well for me with all of my clubs, driver through irons. It really helped me get the feeling that I needed and I was hitting very consistently with solid contact at the range today. It really was a huge lightbulb moment with freeing up my swing and gave me lots of confidence to bring my hands down fast and hard. Completely put me in proper plane and felt effortless. Looking forward to using this feeling on the course. Subscribed. Thank you so much!
Awesome! Really glad it’s helped
Really helpful video! Great job
"Excellent " love it, I'm heading to the course, thank you.
What a lesson! Such great progress, I will do this drills also more than before (did them a bit already). Liked how you were totally amazed at the end, Ryan!
I always had faith in him😁, he did great though, really good student
Wow!! What a great lesson to watch 🙌🏼🙌🏼⛳️
Thanks appreciate it
Like this a lot Chris. Obviously not as much as your student, you always make great videos, without making them too complicated . Superb result.
Thanks Mick appreciate it 🙌
Chris had an awful range session today and just watched the last 2 videos focussed on driver. Absolute gold and I go again ⛳️💪🏼
Thanks Chris glad it helped 🙌
Hey Chris, thanks for that live lesson, super interesting !! I got two questions pls : Would that be the same movement with irons?and what about passive hands/arms and more body driven swing? Many thanks for your answers. Nico
Great lesson drill video tips
Thank you again for showing driver skills again Chris and am sure it’s a great help to many. In view of the fact that the money shots are the approach and around the greens, could you show more of that, including mindset of relaxing. After all that’s when most tense up and mistakes happen.
Just a thought!
Thanks, short game video going live on Wednesday 🙌
This is the way you do it. I saw Bryson de Chambeaus tip where he says bring the hands down to your pocket and then turn. Same thing here. Well done Chris.
Thanks Mick 🙌
So I’m pushing 60 years old not as nimble as I used to be. I came across this video. I haven’t tried hitting a ball on the course yet but hitting foam balls off of a mat in my shop. I am hitting not just the driver, but the three wood and irons better, using this technique because it keeps me from coming over the top as much so thank you
That’s great to hear, hope it works on the course too
This is the best video I've ever seen.
Thanks so much 🙌
@@ChrisRyanGolf Really. I'm 1,5 hcp but always been struggling with fade/slice, specially with Driver. No coach ever made me do the first drill you mentioned. Can't wait to work on that! 🙌
I gotta try this. First swing on the course in the morning lol
Great video Chris. It's obvious that your teaching technique worked wonders. Well done.
Thanks Darren 🙌
Hi Chris, what a great lesson! I’ve tried it according your tips and worked out great! Fantastic. I was also wondering if you advice to use these tips also for irons and then I’m referring to the back swing and hitting down into the bag. Tnx and keep up the good work! Cheers from the Netherlands.
Yep you can use this for irons too and will work just as well
Wow great progress and lesson!
Thanks 🙌
Thank you for the excellent video, very helpful. Regarding the turn after lowering the arms, what is the body movement starting this turn? Turn both core and left shoulder? The whole left side? Just core? thanks, Jeff
As a fellow overactive “swinging from the top” miserable caster, I believe I know the enemy and would be happy to share it with you so you know WHY we are losing power, hitting behind the ball and failing to get compression.
On the downswing when our club is parallel to the ground, our hands should be crossing our trailing leg. Casters all have their hands about 12 inches BEHIND their trailing leg when the club is parallel to the ground and their wrist will be uncocked 12 inches before hitting the ball, losing more than 20% of their clubhead speed.
So no, we are not rotating our torso, not turning our hips or shoulders until the club shaft is approaching being parallel to the ground. I hope this makes sense why we are only moving our arms during the first half of the downswing. We must keep our wrists cocked (arms and Club shaft form a 90° plus angle) when our wrist traverses our trailing leg. I am optimistic that doing lots of drills to correct my ingrained timing problem will finally achieve a desired result. Happy golf trails.
Looks really interesting Chris. It goes against the common teaching of saying start everything from the ground and let the arms ride along passively, but results were impressive.
Would you recommend this approach for improving swings with irons too?
Thanks
Never heard it explained like this before. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
My pleasure thanks for watching Ken
Excellent video once again!!
Question regarding the drill with the sticks were you go fast and stop.. Is the feeling of stopping something you should have in a normal swing as well? Or is the drill more about making sure that you get early and fast hand acceleration from the top?
Yeah more about accelerating the arms early, they do then slow down but never fully stop so in this case it was to get his arms moving faster relative to his chest
Love this move and feel
Thanks 🙌
Question about the drill to put the impact bag behind and smack it….wouldn’t that potentially create a casting from the top situation because you’re trying to release and smack the bag? Which can then lead to some other issues.
This type of video is very helpful cause I'm seeing someone who does what I do get their issue corrected
Thanks Michael appreciate it
This lesson has cured my tendency to pull all of my shots; my driver and wedges. I wish I had this insight months ago! Great lesson!
Wow that’s great Dennis, great to hear 🙌
This makes so much sense - thank you! Would this be transferable to irons as well? (by the way, "before" and "after" drive yardages would have been awesome for comparison :D)
Yeah you can use this with irons too, same ideas apply. Yeah we did have that data but taking an hour lesson down to 10/12 mins means some things don’t make the cut 🤣
Chris, this tip actually works great. What would be your tip for the irons? Using the same swing idea?
Interesting feel. Is these drills applicable to only the driver or could they be applied to the iron swing as well?
Yeah you could apply then to the iron also
Does this work for irons because I struggle to hit the higher irons
wow it is crazy good! Snap the stick drill, wouldn't it be early release? just wondering
That drill is brilliant, love it! Shouldn’t cause that as your are still holding the angles as you stop, so if don’t right it should be ok
I find it difficult to coordinate the down movement of the arms with body rotation. Did this student do something to help with this coordination ?
Nothing specific Jeff, any new moved will be tricky to coordinate and time up, he hit a fair few drives with this move before he started to really coordinate it, and will still need more practice following this lesson
The 100yd practice shots really helps me sync the swing. Usually 4 or 5 of these, then a full swing or two.
Key to this is the bit in the video where Chris points out how low and close my hands get in the downswing (good), compared to swinging them out.
When I focus on this, combined with the 100yard drill, I find I hit full speed shots very consistently.
Can this be translated to irons as well in terms of that first movement being the arms moving downward?
Yes absolutely the same applies to irons too
Would this still also work throughout the rest of the bag?
Yeah this would work with every club provided the swing style was the same or same issues
Great video Chris what does Matt play off?
That's me in the video! Before the lesson I was playing off 24.1; I've had 3 rounds since and my HCP is now 20.8 and falling!
Driver has always killed me, this lesson was incredible!
@mattcronin63 superb pal you'll be welcome in many a scramble team with that swing off 20! You'll be lowering that in no time
8.22 how my goes to get it right? Love this by the way, gonna try this out next time on range!
Haha, yeah takes a few to get everything right, hope it helps 🙌
@@ChrisRyanGolf thanks, will give it a go!
Can the same concept be applied to the iron swing?
It can yes, exact same ideas and moves
Thank you for responding.👍
he has huge untwisting speed! if he could slow down and develop a nice tempo it would all come together nicely for this bloke.
Sounds a bit like Bryson's tip of putting your hands into your right pocket.
Your student's before swing is EXACTLY like mine - upper body rotating and the arms are still across the chest and im standing up in the downswing. So inconsistent. Im going to give this a try at the range. Ive had some success with your other drill of addressing the ball and them setting the driver down about 18" behind the ball and then starting my swing. Im still not consistent enough though. Im still too steep and im hitting high, weak.slices.
Ah should be perfect then, Hope it helps 🙌
Awesome tips in the video, but lets be real, 105 club head is not getting you 277y carry 😁
Just follow these tips and ignore any videos that talk about "shallowing" the club. This is all you have to do.
Thanks, agreed that most don’t need to shallow, they just need to lower things early in the downswing 🙌
So the move is to feel like the hands drop vertically down while the body rotates? I’ve always felt the swing on a horizontal axis I suppose.. I’m getting confused
Yes the arms provide a downward movement primarily with the body providing the outward, get them blended and your downswing should be pretty spot on
@@ChrisRyanGolf interesting. Thanks Chris, I suppose I always like more of like… swinging a bat but with side bend and tilts. Vertically pulling the hands down just seems a foreign concept to my tiny brain!
what's the new channel? i can't find it
It’s called Chris On Course, I’ve now linked it in the description… which I forgot to do! 😁
@@ChrisRyanGolf followed, thank you!!
Everyone says let the hands fall don’t pull down it will steepen the swing so this has messed with my head now 🤯
The ‘feels’ and ideas will be different for each golfer, Matt kept his hands too high so this drill really helped, your arms may work really well already and so no need to have these ideas. Ultimately the arms need to move towards the ball relative to the chest, pushing, falling, pulling etc are just how the individual may feel this move
chris i followed this video tip but found that i hit the ground behind the ball..what have i missed??
Sounds like more turn is needed, the club should move down towards the ground, if it’s too early then more rotation should move that point more towards the target
Should I do this for all Clubs or Driver only?
Yeah this can apply to irons too
This drill makes me come way from inside. What am I missing?
Hey Stanley, do you know what your delivery or path were like before? This move is to go from a more out to in path to a more neutral path. If you were fairly neutral before then this will move you to a more inside delivery.
@@ChrisRyanGolf Often blocking shots, so I was inside to out, I guess. How would I cure that? By feeling like I come over the top? That scares me!
@@stanleycollymore1110 try to turn your body quicker in the downswing. Thats what helped me. I have always had the problem coming too much from the inside.
That man has some class wearing an Arsenal hat. I hope you gave him a discount 😊
🤣🤣 as a Wolves fan there were no discounts here 🤣
Is this guy doing a reverse pivot. Looks bad.
No not at all, he shifted pretty well into his trail side, hips and head actually shifted off the ball a touch, but good move
@ChrisRyanGolf looks like his whole left side just drops on the take away.
@@maness2112 it should do, left shoulder, hip and knee all down towards the ball as the right side moves the opposite. Can definitely happen too much, but this was pretty good I’d say
@ChrisRyanGolf glad you fixed him up good. He needed some expert help!
I've always felt uncomfortable with a driver so I'm definitely going to be trying this drill out. Great stuff as usual 🏌️
Hope it helps Paul
