This has to be the holy grail of golf on YT. My swing has been some what inconsistent thru out the years. Early this season I discovered what you are teaching on the video. I let my hands and arm “drop” first, before opening my hips and shoulders. Now hitting with much more consistency and gain more distance with every club. My philosophy of this is I’m letting my arms and hands get in sync with my shoulder rotation. Of course your explanation is a much more profession and accurate. I told this to 3 of my friends, it help all of them. It cured 2 of them of their slice with their driver and hitting them 20yd longer
Maybe you should start charging your friends for your words of wisdom 🤣 Great that it has helped you and them, I believe it’s an important part of the swing to get right
I agree so many people say “from the top start to rotate” But like you said If you rotate to early it causes a over the top swing ! Drop the arms then rotate people
…albeit ‘ the body swing’ proves that ‘hips first’ also works well ….you just have to know those mechanics to hit it long and straight…its all about consistency when you play a round…
Best video ever to overhaul my swing. I was so engulfed in the turn and leaving my hands up that all it did was pin my arms to my body with no release. I hit my 7 iron 185 yds but it was left most of the time. The bottom line and the key wakeup call was I was essentially playing golf from impact to the target, I had no speed until impact, arms glued to my chest and tried to get them away but rotation and late release it can never happen. I played yesterday with this concept essentially playing golf from my backswing to impact and it was golf euphoria. As a former professional baseball player I managed through athleticism to play around scratch golf, but the handicap system doesn't recognize the rounds in the 80's of sheer frustration. THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO EVER. BRAVO👏
What helped my swing the most? Your entire UA-cam library. Seriously, Chris, your stuff is gold. My swing has improved, but more importantly, my understanding of my swing has gotten so much better. I can actually correct the swing during a round now.
The most important attribute of a good golf instructor is the ability to communicate their knowledge to the student. You really have that down. It's very easy to follow your instructions. I'm a big fan.👍
Bro your best video yet ,this has helped my game the most ,to many instructors focusing on hips ,pressure ,rotate ,bla, bla ,bla , I saw a video a few months ago from AMG golf that they call the Rory drill ,also Overhand golf , hit an imaginary ball of your right hip with the shaft ,this has completely changed my game , video and distance confirmed , my only swing thought is the arms move up and down hit the imaginary ball with the shaft and that is it , I think this is your best video yet , be safe bro
I can't begin to tell you how delighted I am with this video ... every time I've tried to work on "shallowing" the shaft, I've completely destroyed any power in my swing. Shallowing for me, is a weakening move. I lose all power with wild consequences for my ball strike. It could go anywhere. Thanks CR .. Rory story confirms my belief. Much needed!
As someone who has trouble getting the lead arm off the chest in downswing, I LOVE this video. Just worked on these drills and it made it so much easier to center punch the driver and even saw a jump in ball speed. Will be working on these drills for the rest of my golfing life. 🙌
The best tip I had was from my grandad who once played in The Open. He said 'never think of the swing as a series of movements. It's one flowing movement without tension'. He also said to always be aggressive if you want to score.
Thanks. I was struggling with this over the weekend. I was trying to keep my hands up during my downswing. This makes a lot of sense. I had a misconception that if I got my hands down early I would be casting the club.
Thank you! My 16 yr old son is a +2 and struggles with falling back and late arms. Went to the range after watching this and it was an immediate improvement! Spot on!!
Hey Chris, Thanks you as usual for outstanding teaching! I have to say I'm a realist so the most important thing I've learned about the game of golf is play within yourself, know your abilities, example, when we look at videos from the Pros I know ill never look or swing like them but if I understood the golf swing better , like I don't believe in positions I believe in Forces and the way the human body actually works to get the most out of the swing! And of course if I don't practice ,practice what I'm learning none of it's possible ! Thanks again Chris your a Natural Teacher, you break down the golf Swing Beautifully!
Chris, I have been struggling for years with inconsistency. I watched this video last week and it was like a light bulb went off and I realized I was turning before the arms came down. I golfed this week with this change and had a much easier and more consistent game. It improved my rhythm, strike and less swing thoughts with both irons and driver. Thank You for all your great videos.
Good video. I've benefitted most from your videos on chipping and pitching. You've got several that I watch every so often to remind me of the best techniques. They have helped a lot.
Good stuff. A simple and clear explanation is good thing for most of us. From what I have been able to glean from recent studies is that there is a slight lateral shift off the ball in the takeaway, then a recentering at the top, and then the lower body leads the rotation in the transition, but the upper body moves a fraction of second later, so that for all practical purposes you rotate your whole body during the transition. As far as what has helped me most in golf, I would say correct knowledge with proper application. There is a lot of good information out there now about the golf swing. The problem is choosing what works best for you. The secret is still in the dirt in my opinion. Thanks
Fantastic lesson, not seen any one covering this very important part of the swing,AT LAST ive found the last piece of the jigsaw !!! Thanks Chris .and as usual simply explained...
Thanks Chris, I've had a five year break from playing golf and just started to go back down the range again in the hope of hitting the coarse again soon. Your coaching has been by far the most positive thing anyone could do to learn how to swing a club and build a swing. Great stuff and thanks again.
Best advice I've ever gotten on the golf swing.Sequences the golf swing much better and dramatically improves ball striking. Thanks for sharing this information with us.
My score has been going down since i started watching your videos. They are so awesome!! The only thing I wish you would incorporate is demonstration in slow motion. Seeing the swing or movement being taught done in super slow motion would be outstanding. Even without it, I am so great full to watch your videos. Thanks.
I’m 6’4 and I had someone tell me a lot of tall people have this problem and this is what makes me flip, he said I let my shoulders stay in front of my arms too long. Can’t wait to try these tips, thank you as always Chris!
I am 6'1" with really long arms and have similar challenges. In my case, on the downswing, I end up swinging up instead of getting myself into Chris's "jump" position. I am going to try Chris's advice at the range, although I do wonder if I will be able to swing from the lower "jump" position with my long arms.
Hi Chris, i had a lesson with a guy which changed my game, which was position 1 then 2 to top of back swing, then allow the club to drop from the inside, before i keep coming over the top..which ive been doing for 40 years uuh !! I really in joy your content keep it up mate ....
Chris thank you so much for this video !!! This is exactly what I need at this time , as this past weekend I was getting my body out in front and my arms were late and I was hitting some awful shots with my irons .
Outstanding video! This concept helped improve my golf swing…ball striking more than just about anything i’ve ever seen. I really appreciate all that you do!
You have been amazing Chris. Love your video on 'skimming' the forearm, your release videos and favourite drills. The way you explain things make it easy for us high handicap golfers. I always come back to yours and MAMG videos when I feel a little lost. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!
This video was gold for me. The description of the takeaway line I have heard before, but the way you showed where the club should end up also, that feeling of reaching up really feels like what was missing from my swing. I never used to be able to hit 4 and 3 iron and woods. Now I just had a range session where I clipped those easily. Also driver improved a lot. Every club feels much more natural and goes further during that session. Looking forward to keep practicing with these key pointers. Thanks!
Taking some lessons. I have played (on and off ) for 10 years,I find that lessons every few years help me get back the swing thoughts I have forgotten ( and get rid of my bad habits) and each time I make jumps in my progress (accuracy , putting chipping etc) .
Very good tutorial Chris, explained the concepts nicely. Showing that the golf swing requires a sequence of good moves to produce a good end result. The problem is that one bad move can ruin it all. I liken the golf swing to asking someone to throw a frisby with their left arm and a cricket ball with right arm simultaneously - it can be done but needs a lot of patience and practice.
Great vid Sir! I do this for a while and it has changed my game: easier to produce speed, more consistent and longer shots ! Nice to watch this. Not so many pros teach this!!😊
Great explanation of this move from the top. I think I’ve finally understand how it should be done. Will take care of my hip-sliding and casting I think! Hope you will follow up this with a video on moving hips and arms through impact from the position you end with in this one.
I think more golfers should spend some time focusing on course strategy, I think I could probably reduce a golfers score significantly by just looking at how they play, so important.
Watching the downswing position of the best golfers, they always have the right elbow nearly pinned into the waist, so I think of this and my golf has improved especially my drives
I know this video is old but this is money, got me hitting better irons immediately! Great video! I was always being way too fast with my body thinking it was the right move.
Mate you are the best. Every time I need to fix something in my swing I find a video of yours that’s perfect for me. Question for you if you see this, do you think this is what has fixed shanking wedges? I feel like my body was getting ahead of my arms causing a million shanks on approach shots Josh
Coincidentally this is something that I've discovered and been working on recently. The swing feels a lot better with a lot less effort too. Pleased that it's the correct thing to work on. Another great video Chris.
I started doing this roughly a month ago just on my own. Many coaches say to not "Swing at the ball" etc and I thought this would be casting it but FML when I do it this way it feels great
Thank you. I think this is exactly what I need to work on. I look good on the backswing and good at the top but somehow still seem to get out to in and get a pull shot. Also a bit scoopy. Best golf tip, maybe play your own game, don't worry about what everyone else is doing.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I’ve noticed while practicing with my r10 that my shoulders start turning and I go over the top no matter what I tried. This looks like it’s exactly what I needed thank you!
Coach, this is an amazing awakening. Too many of us have heard to swing out to the ball!, No, wrong, you have shown us hands and arms down..NOT out, a game changer for your viewers. Also your jump drill puts us in a position to properly compress the ball. Thanks for clearing up one of the biggest misnomers in golf ⛳🙂.
Great instruction. I had never been told this move but believe it will be my number one key to hitting better shots. This is so easy to see and understand. Your other videos are gold also. Hate to gush over a training video but you explain things very well.
The magic move by Harvey Penick like your using right here is what has helped the most for me. I think that could help all level of players more than anything!
Just a great video....again Chris! A clip from Peter Cowen explaining to Matsuyama that move brought me here to your video. Very well explaned, I'm a 64 years old single digit handicap with the old "Hogan mentality" which everything has to start from ground up. This video brakes apart from it and brings so much new concepts of the modern swing and throw the "spinner" concept into the garbage. Can't wait to start practicing it without hitting ball first to master it. 😊👍
For a long time I had a low, drawing ball flight, almost stinger like or block right. My ball speed was low, lacked distance and I always felt I was getting to the left too quickly. After watching this video I felt that I had more time in moving to the left, I found my ball flight was much higher, straighter, consistent and with more distance. Thanks.
Also Chris I would like to see another video explaining in detail what follows this « move » that way we will have the complete downswing sequence. Thank’s Luc 😊
Chris, your previous video concerning dropping the hands on the downswing between 4 & 5 O'Clock ties in beautifully. With proper weight shift and rotation the ball seems to jump of the club face with ease. Another great instructional video, Thanks!
This thought/feel pattern will help a LOT of people. Online instruction is difficult because not everyone has the same swing fault or feels but this concept is CRITICAL to understand. Everyone thinks of "leading with the lower body" differently. for me leading with the lower body thought led to years of over the top chunking the ball on bad days and 10-15 yard low slices that i could play on a GOOD day. I took a lesson and this concept is one of the first things he said after seeing my swing. was literally told to think of "only swinging with fast arms." ended up syncing my movements with arms and body for the first time ever. I felt like i wasnt turning at all but in reality I was. for people with my issue instruction like this is golden.
Hey Chris, very helpful video, thank you. After a month of daily practice to attempt to fix my swing I've finally realized how important it is to fire the arms. Especially for me being that I am 6'6" I was wondering if you don't mind sharing how tall you are?
There is one tip from you that has helped me tremendously. The tip was on release. I think this is a tip from a while ago. You suggest releasing the arms and wrists such that the club head is as far away from you as possible just past the ball. Love that tip. 👍. I would love to see another video like that for Driver and fairway wood.
Great video. I will try this the next time I'm on the golfcourse. What about the weight shifting forward...that should happen before 'firing your arms' right?
Loved the tips on throwing the golf ball and alignment sticks to help gain the speed in the downswing, as I always associated this action as casting and tend to use my hip turn more. Makes sense now and I will work on these great tips.
This is great advice. I focus on firing my right shoulder straight down at top of backswing. It also forces you to turn as if you don’t you’ll dump the club into ground way behind ball. Adds distance to drives too
Great video Chris. Always wondered what powered the speed in the golf swing. You've explained it amazingly well and it seems that once started the momentum helps open up the lead heap and rotation. Do both hands participate equally in the initial burst of hand speed downward?
This is a great drill! I emphasized lifting in the backswing so I could accelerate more into the squatting position. My swing became much more powerful and I began flushing the ball. Took the “mechanics” away, became much more fluid.
Fair to say that this is the only “active” movement of the arms in the downswing? Or do they then do something else actively as you move thru impact? Everyone is different, but asking generally about conscious force applied by the hands and arms. My guess is you do what you do in this video and then let them ride freely (assuming a proper grip and pivot)? Haven’t ever seen a video linking this move into delivery position with the remainder of the swing. Thanks! Love your stuff.
What helped me the most was three crucial "must-happen" things I figured for myself, to be deliberately aware of during the swing. One: Head must stay centered - don't sway to the right. This is a huge, unconscious tendency in my swing which I have to consciously override, or else I hit fat or thin. Two: Left arm totally straight (but completely relaxed) at moment of impact. My tendency is to pull my arm up just before impact. Three: Zero vertical up-down body and head movement after address. No "pro-level" squatting for me! If I do these 3 things I can be quite confident that a clean strike will result.
I look forward to trying this. I have tried shallowing the club but can’t get used to it. I don’t feel like I can be consistent with it. You asked what has improved our game. I would say my iron play for me They can still go a bit off at times slight pull, slice and a poor draw if you like. Good contact most of the time. If not on the green close enough to at least try to chip and putt. A bit more distance with the big dog and a bit straighter shooting single figures will soon be a reality one hopes
Great video Chris and awesome tip on the transition from top to the finish ... Best tip i ever used was the feet together drill by John Jacobs great drill to sort out your timing i use it all the time
Fantastic like all your videos! What is your best video that shows impact and follow through to complete the firing and turn without flipping? Thanks for your great instruction. If I visit UK where do I find you for personal instruction?
Chris, this is really helpful and I've been able to begin to get this feel now with my irons. But how does it work with the driver? I don't feel I have enough room to drop my arms in the same way.
@@ChrisRyanGolf just a quick question my practice swing is always good But when i get over the ball i become quick and my swing is flat, wondering if it is something you come across in your lessons. Thanks Kev
Great video! Just so I have this clear. The lower body (transition to a squat) are initiating the arms to naturally drop into the slot. But you're saying as they fall naturally we should also activate them as well to drop faster into the slot or else if we don't then our arms may be pinned behind us as we rotate into impact and hands might flip?
Chris first off, this is the video I’ve needed for god knows how long. I’ve been stuck / flipping for a while. If you hit some pulls w this feel is it possible that I’m just not keeping my upper body back long enough? Also the feel I’ve been using from this video is essentially throw the arms down hard which causes more pressure into my legs which causes a squat which causes the legs to explode off the ground which adds more speed to the club all while eliminating early extension because you can’t squat and extend at the same time? Is the squat move essentially taking early extension and making it on time extension? Throwing the arms down w speed seems to make me squat deeper? Sorry for the rambling but this is an incredibly fantastic feel!
Great video Chris… How do the hands move after the down? More specifically the wrists.. some say throw others say roll.. too much down and you hit it fat.
Love the jump position, makes sure you're loaded up and avoiding falling back or leaning too far forward at the start of the transition. So many drills only focus on one mistake, this hits both.

So true! Fantastic content
The most simplified golf tips on UA-cam. Chris is fantastic in his explanation of why things work, and why they don't
I totally agree with you, Chris is the best
The best I've come across on UA-cam

Thanks. I was struggling with this over the weekend. I was trying to keep my hands up during my downswing. This makes a lot of sense. I had a misconception that if I got my hands down early I would be casting the club.

Hi Cris
One more fantastique vidéo.
I will try it mediatly for thé winter training session
Thank Christian
Another ace from CR - merci bien. I think Ill be watching this one more than once.
This is the greatest tip I ever heard of !!
Thank you. I think this is exactly what I need to work on. I look good on the backswing and good at the top but somehow still seem to get out to in and get a pull shot. Also a bit scoopy. Best golf tip, maybe play your own game, don't worry about what everyone else is doing.
Thanks Chris. Really needed this.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I’ve noticed while practicing with my r10 that my shoulders start turning and I go over the top no matter what I tried. This looks like it’s exactly what I needed thank you!
Brilliant illustration
Thanks

The correct use of the right arm fold and position helped me the most, but I agree with other people I use most of Chris videos,
This really puts it all together. Thank you
This concept and drill has made such a difference to my game. Thanks Chris 🙏
The magic move by Harvey Penick like your using right here is what has helped the most for me. I think that could help all level of players more than anything!
At last, the missing link! …. just back from the range … boom 💥😎 thanks Chris 🙏🙏🙏
Brilliant insight on first move (body and arms) down from top of backswing along with accompanying drills-
Lessons. PGA qualified pros have been my biggest helping factor. However online coaching vids like yours are a great partner to learning
Great to hear Andrew
@@ChrisRyanGolf keep up the great work Chris, been an avid viewer of your coaching tips for years 👍
Great looking drills - got to try them! Thanks!
Thanks.
Great stuff as always Chris, practical mechanics.
Thanks Paul
This is a spectacular video. He has an awesome swing, and great explanation at many things.
Love it!! Great to read comments like this, I love that drill so really glad it’s helped
Especially for me being that I am 6'6"
I was wondering if you don't mind sharing how tall you are?
There is one tip from you that has helped me tremendously. The tip was on release. I think this is a tip from a while ago. You suggest releasing the arms and wrists such that the club head is as far away from you as possible just past the ball. Love that tip. 👍. I would love to see another video like that for Driver and fairway wood.
Yeah I remember that tip and video, glad it helped
Yeah, I like this. This is the break down i needed to hear. Thanks!
This is what I needed. You’re the best.
Thanks Paul
Great video. I will try this the next time I'm on the golfcourse. What about the weight shifting forward...that should happen before 'firing your arms' right?
Really good explanation- must keep your hands in - lay down the shaft
Loved the tips on throwing the golf ball and alignment sticks to help gain the speed in the downswing, as I always associated this action as casting and tend to use my hip turn more. Makes sense now and I will work on these great tips.
Brilliant video. Helped loads.
Been doing something similar to the pump drill and I noticed much better start line and strike. Amazing video as always Chris..
Thanks so much
This is great advice. I focus on firing my right shoulder straight down at top of backswing. It also forces you to turn as if you don’t you’ll dump the club into ground way behind ball. Adds distance to drives too
Very true and I’ve dumped that club a few times, but your right it does encourage you to rotate through
Something it’s a simple tip that changes everything, thank you
Great video Chris. Always wondered what powered the speed in the golf swing. You've explained it amazingly well and it seems that once started the momentum helps open up the lead heap and rotation. Do both hands participate equally in the initial burst of hand speed downward?
Chris I think you have solved my swing problem cheers
This is a great drill! I emphasized lifting in the backswing so I could accelerate more into the squatting position. My swing became much more powerful and I began flushing the ball.
Took the “mechanics” away, became much more fluid.
Great to hear Steven, could have put it better myself, lift to then accelerate the arms more, love it!
I was just hitting 8 iron pitch shots about 40 yards before seeing this video, getting much crisper contact. Will try it with a full iron swing.
Thanks Chris this is a really good drill. I was wondering is this drill good when i use the driver and 3 wood etc?
Great video Chris and awesome tip on the transition from top to the finish ... Best tip i ever used was the feet together drill by John Jacobs great drill to sort out your timing i use it all the time
Feet together drill, now that is a useful drill! So simple but so effective, I use that a lot and it helps with so many issues too
Great tip can't wait to take it to the range , thanks.
Thanks James
Fantastic like all your videos! What is your best video that shows impact and follow through to complete the firing and turn without flipping? Thanks for your great instruction. If I visit UK where do I find you for personal instruction?
Chris, this is really helpful and I've been able to begin to get this feel now with my irons. But how does it work with the driver? I don't feel I have enough room to drop my arms in the same way.
Chris, yet again a quality lesson online, seems similar to Serigo
Thanks Kev, yeah similar and if it works for Sergio then it’s probably worth trying to emulate
@@ChrisRyanGolf just a quick question my practice swing is always good But when i get over the ball i become quick and my swing is flat, wondering if it is something you come across in your lessons. Thanks Kev
Very good and valuable presentation. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Robert
Thanks Jeffrey and yeah I love that as a concept
I second this, Jeffrey.
