    It's so weird to me that one of the most popular arguments against kpop is the language barrier argument. How do you think people all over the world listen to american pop? Or do americans think everyone speaks english?

    • @fvngvsxx798
      @fvngvsxx798 6 років тому +165

      Most countries that listen to american pop speak english therefore a language barrier doesn't exist.... as with kpop, about ~1.2 million american citizens can speak korean according to the 2011 census (yes, I know that was 7 years ago but it hasn't changed that much since) which means, there's quite a large language barrier considering that 300+ million U.S. citizens don't speak korean.

    • @raccoonsincocoons5643
      @raccoonsincocoons5643 6 років тому +488

      Jetzt that's just not true. American music is listened to all over the world. I can count on my hand the number of people I know who speak english, yet virtually everybody around me listens to american music

    • @skyzgone2953
      @skyzgone2953 6 років тому +94

      Well but in most countries where American music is played English is taught in schools. Even though you might not understand every word of a song you still get what the song is about. If I hear a Korean song and the only word I can understand is “baby” or whatever I don’t have any connection to that song.
      Still I don’t know why I even try to argue since the people who listen to kpop are in the vast majority just so narrow minded that they can’t take any form of criticism. It’s like with any other boyband... obsessive fans from the age of 10 to 15 who in a few years ask themselves how they could listen to such music. But then I guess that’s always the case with popular music, not much substance just artificial songs coming out of some kind of music printer.

      lol so true. 90% of peope in russia listen to american/english music and don't know what it's about. they just don't care, they just like the way it sounds. and sometimes they can check the translation of the song and say: "well, it'd be better if i didn't do that bc the lyrics are stupid". and yes english is taught in schools, but the only things they can get from a song are very simple words like "baby"
      btw english is taught in schools very poorly. mostly they teach grammar, how to read, how to write and basic words. they don't pay attention to listening and speaking at all. and i can understand english speach bc i learned it from music, interviews, movies etc. School gave me some basics, but most of it i studied myself bc i wanted to, and most people just don't have the desire. if you ask someone to speak english, they'll say something like "london is the capital of great britain", and in the worst case "london is capital of great britain". btw a lot of people think that New York is the capital of the US lol
      also a small persentage of people learn german instead of english

    • @Gamooch
      @Gamooch 6 років тому +69

      Truth. Also not everyone cares about lyrics. Even english music I prettty much never listen to the lyrics, and even when I try I often can't understand even what english speaking artists are saying. Anytime I wan't to know lyrics for an English song I look them up and read them because that's the only way i'll ever know. So it's not a big deal that people just go look up the korean meaning and then also just enjoy the melody. For me I care about the melody way more than lyrics so I often don't even look them up. Some people super care about lyrics that why they love certain artist and songs. I have songs I think suck but my friend just loves the lyrics so much that it's like their favourite song. People are different. Music and lyrics are separate things that can be enjoyed individually and together.

    • @gleegleek4eva
      @gleegleek4eva 6 років тому +37

      Mr. floor Not even. Both genres operate too differently to be compared. They both have a strict idol system but the way groups are packaged and produced are very different. Kpop is like the Japanese idol system met with Western music and style. Kpop uses their East meets West formula to better appeal to the younger generation and overseas listeners, whereas on the flip side Japan could care less about appealing to other countries and audiences and it's apparent in the way their groups are presented and how distinctly Japanese their music sounds.
      Hell, even more 'cute' kpop groups go about their sound a much more westernized way than groups who go for the same type of image in Japan.
      In the end, they're kind of hard to compare. The only similarity really is that both are in Asia and operate using an idol system. That being said Japan does have the 2nd biggest musical market in the world so every kpop group drops a few Japanese albums during their career to collect Japanese coin. Most groups essentially make their same western kpop music and add Japanese lyrics but there are groups such as KARA and TWICE (TWICE being helped by the fact that they have 3 Japanese members) who made a name for themselves by making more 'Japanese' sounding music while promoting there.
      But then there are acts such as Bigbang, TVXQ, BoA, and SNSD (Girls' Generation) who made their mark in the Japanese market by just translating their sound to the Japanese audience (with SNSD's Japanese albums being even more western and EDM/ r&b influenced than their Korean releases, funnily enough).

    @kj5246 6 років тому +55

    As someone who used to hate pop, and mostly listened to rock, punk and metal, kpop is probably the most creative and amazing genre I've ever discovered. The difference between american pop and kpop is that kpop idols has trained for YEARS in both singing, dancing and rapping. Many idols have trained for 10+ years just to then join a group. The music videos, in my opinion, are way more creative than other MV's. The dancing and cinemagraphy is beyond amazing. Groups like BTS make all their music themselves and are extremely talented and genuine. Now I've only been a fan of kpop for a little over a year, and I still love other music, but I'll probably never find something that makes me as happy as korean music makes me.
    P.s: Fuck racist people who bash it just because they're asian and have 'pretty faces'. Stop sitting behind a keyboard and hating on something you're not even trying to understand.

    • @blackczer123

      hows that racist? its just the truth

    • @blackczer123
      @blackczer123 6 років тому +19

      My bad i misread but I think most people are not bashing K pop artist for being Asian. They bashing K pop itself for basically being generic, that includes the need to have everyone look pretty dancing over generic catchy melodies. They are just addressing the shallowness of K pop. That nothing racist about that.

    • @blackczer123
      @blackczer123 6 років тому +15

      1. And that is the problem. These people are groomed and trained to be idols. They have to to look pretty and do all this extra crap to be hand picked and dropped into these groups. I feel that type of shallowness spill into their music. Moreover they all sound the same. I understand why girls might find it appealing, but that an element of K pop i can never get behind. I prefer my Post Malones and Wale any day over Justin Biebier and One Direction. Plus at least western pop artist try to distant themselves from corporate overlords as much as possible.
      2. Also I know there are K pop songs that delve into different genre, though they are not particularly ground breaking or experimental instrumentally beyond merely just setting foot into other genre. They are just "ok" and passable. Much better than the bubble gum pop music usually associated with K pop and its sad that K pop pushes these soulless types of songs so hard to the forefront.
      3. Lyrically K pop artist are more or less all right. There are songs with very nice lyrics with stories and messages. A good portion of the time K pop artist are generic lyrically, but are never really bad especially the rappers. They dont have hard hitting bars but they can ride the beat.
      Problem however is the language barrier. Most people dont listen to K pop because because of lyrics. Subtitles make it hard to really enjoy the song cause you have to multi task.
      Essentially people like K pop because its good looking boys and girls danicing over a happy pop melody, and theres nothing wrong with that. It basically made to sell out to girls anyways.
      4. I enjoy J rock because of guitar rifts and chord progression similar to Bring me the horizon, 3 day grace, and blink 182, as well as the vocals. I really dont pay much mind to the lyrics. Well in the defense of J rock, they dont put so much emphasis on looking pretty and grooming

    Kpop largely depends on the producers behind it. BTS has some quality songwriters on their last few albums. Their motifs aren't near as repetitive as American music, but as for most Kpop I can't say.
    The only people who have a real problem with it are these pseudo masculine insecure tools who have been trying to hinder what music is "supposed to be" for males for a long time. If they had their way, Robert Plant wouldn't even be allowed to sing high.

    • @8bitdiedie
      @8bitdiedie 6 років тому +11

      I don’t care that they look feminine. I do care that they value their looks way too much. It shifts the attention from the music to if they’re hot or not. American pop has a similar problem but for them things like plastic surgeries are nowhere near as common.

    • @rhinosaur4521
      @rhinosaur4521 6 років тому +80

      If you're distracted by their looks it sounds like a personal problem. Their faces aren't on any of their album covers so you can just choose to listen to them on a streaming platform rather than watch their music videos. I really don't see how this has anything to do with their music one way or another. You either enjoy it or you don't, but people acting like it's a detriment to society somehow is way overblown.

    • @8bitdiedie
      @8bitdiedie 6 років тому +10

      It's no secret much of their popularity is due to their looks. I know I can ignore it, but the fact that their appeal has to do with their physical appearance is a bad thing for the music industry. The industry needs to rely less on turning people into the equivalent of a Barbie or Ken doll.

    • @rhinosaur4521
      @rhinosaur4521 6 років тому +33

      That's a good point, but that's what separates the music business from musical expression. There are people who are pop fans who aren't really fans of music and they'll never change, but that doesn't mean genuine music fans who listen to many other genres can't enjoy pop for the good things it has to offer musically in terms of melodic hooks and instant accessibility

    • @8bitdiedie
      @8bitdiedie 6 років тому +2

      But it's often the lesser known (uglier) pop artists that are far better at making pop music and the industry focusing on looks holds them back from exposure.

    I don't understand why people feel the need to have such knee-jerk hateful reactions to K-pop. K-pop is a very diverse genre, including r&b, hip hop, electronica, rock... it's not just one poppy and bubblegum thing. Like Fantano says, a lot of the K-pop music lately has been very experimental in nature. In addition, people seem very quick to dismiss the boy bands as gay, as if that's an acceptable insult. Too many people judge another culture based on their own culture... with our increasingly global world it is a lot more necessary to practice cultural relativism... Honestly, people should just open their minds and judge objectively. If they do, I think they would be impressed about K-Pop being a total package of good music, performance, looks, and content.

Its hard to tell why because you wont get it why we are that massive loyal fanbase unless you check out BTS music without any prejudice and turn on CC for the sub. Their music is inspiring and they are really talented plus they produced own music. Check out spring day, mic drop remix, not today, blood sweat n tears, etc. I want to remind you all again, THEY PRODUCED OWN MUSIC and their lyrics mostly written by their leader, RM and rap part by rappers.

Their company has a fair split of the income, with 70% going to BTS, while 30% goes to the company's staff etc, which is different from exploiting compaines such as SM (with 90% going to the company). They often do campaigns and donate to relief funds and charity and their main message seen throughout their music (mostly their Love Yourself album series) is positive and all about loving oneself. Rogue Wasteland slave contracts exist in the west too and it’s really annoying every time i see people use that argument. not only is it hypocritical.. but it makes the korean music industry look like a monolith. BTS for example are an artist that is a prime example of the counter-movement against the restrictions and harsh treatment in kpop. BTS are basically on the board of their company and can veto decisions. They also write and produce their music and talk about their own stories. They became this huge for that reason. Fandoms are another story but the artist never intended for their work to create a culture that is unfavorable.. so it’s good to look at them as their own entity.

    I knew someone would compare it to anime, but that comparison doesn't stand at all. The appeal of anime is completely different to the appeal of Western filmmaking, hence why it's become popular over in the West, because it offers an alternative to mainstream film coming out of the US, the UK, etc. K-pop, on the other hand, doesn't offer an alternative to contemporary Western pop artists, rather it offers a cherry-picked version presented in a slightly different package. (This isn't a jab at K-pop, by the way. I personally see it as I do any other genre, meaning that there's K-pop I like and K-pop I don't like.)

    • @yumibunnii
      @yumibunnii 6 років тому

      George Pheby I think the comparison makes sense. The ultra cute bubblegum pop aspect of kpop has its similarities to anime. Look at TVXQ- Balloons and then tell me how anime is not a good comparison.

    • @potemkincitylimits8079
      @potemkincitylimits8079 6 років тому +15

      I just watched it and I don't see your point at all. If what you're getting at is that the cutesy, light-hearted appeal of K-pop carries over to anime, then I definitely don't see your point. Sure, there are plenty of anime that fall under the 'moe' umbrella which are popular in the West and carry their own appeal, but their appeal, as relates to the broader appeal of anime, is not simply that they're cute. If that were the case, that wouldn't explain the fact that nearly all of the most popular anime series of all time in the West are shounen action shows, often with an overtly dark tone to them, as is the case with the likes of Death Note and Attack on Titan. For me personally, the appeal of anime is the diversity and specificity of its narrative styles and themes that are rarely, if ever, found in Western filmmaking, and from the people I've spoken to and the opinions I've heard, most anime fans take an interest in the medium for reasons similar to this. Of course, there are people who only care about shows like K-On! and Kiniro Mosaic specifically for their cutesy edge, but for people who are drawn to anime as a whole, they will watch the likes of Non Non Biyori just as they'll watch shows like Psycho-Pass that aren't cute in the slightest, because the appeal of anime as an art form, for most people, lies in the stories that are told, not in the pretty packaging that they sometimes come in.

      I see Koreans saying the same thing. Especially the older generations--although they admit that these 'idol' groups are talented with both singing and dancing abilities, they don't see the music as genuine and "high-quality" as popular songs decades ago. Because K-Pop is becoming a major music industry, groups produce catchy, electric music in a short period of time for more revenue, along with frequently recruiting people based on looks rather than talent for more audience; due to this, some people feel that the lyrics are trite, shallow, or just don't make sense. They don't seem to have much thought put into them. The most of the voices sound similar and uniqueness is rare. Though I am part of the younger generation, I prefer the older Korean music that portrays sincere emotion and more variety, despite the lack of quality and perfect autotuning of modern music.

      As a korean myself, kpop or jpop isnt a genre. Its like how kraut rock was a genre because they provided new shit because its in german(yes they did provide some things but admit it they were basically doing things that were vogue at the time with robotic concepts thats all and just get hype because they didnt know german). When i ask kpop fans overseas why they like kpop they say like dances are cool and people are talented but also say its because its in a different language. Its true that there are some songs that would be only in kpop because of the influence of what we seem to like, but best way to summarise the korean music industry is basically providing a korean version of western trends and there were a sense of pride or mission in doing music in the west in korean and prove that we can do this genre of music too (and thats guess how k hiphop and k rock exists) especially in the early days of kpop and western music is still looked as trendy advanced or refined (so american pop was and still kinda revered in that sense than korean pop music well of course the disadvantage is mumble raps are also looked in that sense even tho westerners hate it lol). Although i do think kpop can be analysed as like a new influence in terms of visuals(just like how glam rock is analyzed) professional training systems and how good music from all around the world is appreciated globally or analyzing individual trends in kpop and groups or singersongwriters who tried new things for the industry, for example how bigbang started the trend of singersong writers marketing in idol groups or how iu changed the industry by increasing popularity in terms of female ballad singers with differwnt spectrums of music or how orange caramel tried concepts that were so alien and funny or cute that it became a sensation.

    People who hate Kpop don't understand that the appeal is more so the overall package and for the most part, it isn't anything too serious. It's Pop music geared to young people but these people singing and performing also do contribute in producing their music. They are refreshingly extremely hard working and humble people which you can't help but admire, they work their ass off. They do care a lot about the visual which has it's down side because it can be shallow. They also offer great choreography. They're great role models for the youth, and they very much catered to fans needs which sometimes create obsessive fans but it's still a smart strategy, it creates a loyal intense fandom..and lastly they do offer various entertaining charming personalities and have funny relationship dynamic in their groups, it's always really fun to see their shows because they're all uniquely charming, they know how to be charming and they're so many layers and jokes that happens in each group.
    It's a package entertainment. (Even bts knows and acknowledge this fact) Kpop has good and bad music like other genre. They sometimes do compose & produce, It's has become more common nowadays for idols to create their own music. The choreography 90% of the time is always excellent, they're hardworking, always very humble and they're funny charming people. They're entertainers; they sing, dance, have great work ethnic and are also tv personalities.

    Before K-pop became really popular around the world, I don't think people really cared. But as it gradually became more popular, there has been more fans that have been rude. When some people say negative things about K-pop I feel like they say it because of the fandoms. Don't get me wrong there are many good fans but someone of them are obsessive and disrespectful, especially towards people who don't care about K-pop. As a Nigerian, I often feel as though my culture's music (Afrobeat) is overlooked as well and isn't taken seriously as an actual musical genre, despite the well crafted and produced songs. That's the reason why I was easily able to get into other culture's music and become generally open-minded and broad with my music taste. It's already extremely hard for African Americans to get promoted and make it big in the music industry with their own genres such as Rnb, Rap, hip-hop, reggae, etc so for Africans to make it out their with their own cultural music feels impossible asf, and it's because people don't give our music a chance nor listen to it.

We teenagers in this country are all about fashion, aesthetics and music. Our fashion is influenced by k-pop stars, which is influenced by western fashion. K-pop and the fashion scene in korea basically go hand in hand. The genre is strong here in korea and quite strong worldwide which is quite cool, but obviously there are the fans who only like them because of their looks. I believe that the genre is going to heavily evolve though and become something new, something more mainstream and popular and is sometimes played on the radio in the west. That’s why when their fanbase grow up they look up to artists that changed history in genres for example but not exclusively to rock and not commercial pop music that will only live in their memories as a good laugh and hidden teenage guilty pleasure.
    And it’s a shame that K-pop overshadows other genres in Korea. Just like in any other part on this earth there are other genres such as traditional and western influenced music.

    kpop is not solely about the music. it is about the experience. there is a reason why the songs always go hand in hand with the choreography. why you get photocards and photo albums in the albums you buy. why the band members go on game shows and make frequent tv appearances. it is made to breed avid loyal fans. imo the music isn't amazing (i am a kpop fan don't get me wrong), but for those that don't crave originality or uniqueness, it is the sugary pop solution.

    Tbh I don’t think kpop should be analyzed on just a musical level. Even though it refers to a music style (korean pop), not only does it tie many different genres together (pop, r&b, rock, hip-hop, EDM etc), but it also has various elements besides the music that are essential to making kpop what it is. I’m talking about the production quality of everything: music video, visuals, style, choreographies, performances etc.
    Musically, it’s obviously based off of western pop trends, but they also mix it up with some korean elements of course, such as trot music. They do take many of these trendy elements, organize it in a certain structure and make it their own genre. However, I think recently they’ve been toning down the well known loudness and saturated arrangements, and thus it’s become more and more globally appealing. Either way, it’s essentially pop music, but in korean.
    However, they emphasize the visual aspect of it a lot more than westerners do. That way, it’s sure to grab people’s attention more easily and makes it a more unique and satisfying experience.
    As for BTS being the most internationally successful group right now, I believe it’s due to the fact that not only do they make catchy songs, but their performances also come with powerful and energetic choreography, and their music videos have really aesthetically pleasing elements and tell intricate stories. Also, BTS participate in the production of their own albums, songs, composition and lyrics, which allows them to tell personal stories through their music and talk about problems that all people can relate to. This makes their music more relatable, thus it’s easier to like them because of their rawness. All this genuineness in their art + 7 men who are pleasing to look at with nice personalities = likability + success.
    This is just my opinion.

    I’m an avid music lover. I’ve had a lot of fun with kpop over the years I’ve known it. I know it’s not a lot of people’s taste but that comes with any genre, including American music, but it doesn’t mean just because the few kpop songs you’ve heard you didn’t like, mean all of it is the same. It’s much the same way with any genre. Different artist in the same genre can bring different styles and colors. In such a huge industry that is kpop: I think one of the most appealing and exciting things about it is that there is an endless sea of groups and genre/style mash-ups to explore, you might be pleasantly surprised by what you stumble across. Not everything is bubble-gum pop and every group and artist have their strengths and weaknesses.
    Plus a big factor of the draw of kpop is the experience as a whole: the production value and aesthetics shown in their music videos can be so cinematic, that coupled with clean and often complex choreography adds to the music and gets you anticipating what a group will bring to you with their next album. I’m honestly a bit spoiled now when I watch a music video...with how dedicated and over the top kpop music videos go with their production and choreography..other music videos often struggle to impress me or keep my attention as wel.
    As for some people’s problem with the industry itself...there’s no going around it, digging into the music industry as a whole and the gears behind it...it can be pretty ugly. Just look at what usually happens to young American artist and child actors once Hollywood and the music industry get through with them. Koreans are particularly incredibly hard working, but at least most of them are prepared going in with the training they do ahead of time. They work so hard from so early on, you can’t help but WANT to see them succeed.
    I think Kpop and particularly American pop have always had a give and take relationship. Koreans were inspired by American music and as they started to grow their own formula and twists, America was in turn inspired. A lot of popular American artist have expressed their love of kpop and have taken ideas from the genre for their own music.
    If you give it a listen and you still don’t like anything you hear, that’s fine. We all don’t have to be the same. But don’t get mad if you start to see more kpop invading your country. With different groups constantly contributing to the genre’s steady takeover, particularly with BTS...I feel like it’ll be almost impossible to escape. We’re entering a kpop wave.

    I've been a kpop fan for like 6 years and it isn't much of a newly popular thing. I think people who say kpop is just manufactured pop have only heard a few of the most popular songs. If you dive in deeper, you'll see there's a lot of genuine artistry in it. A lot of the k r&b and hip hop artists are independent and create their own music. Even the biggest groups like bts participate heavily in the music production. Seventeen is a group that produces, writes, and even choreographs almost everything themselves.
    It's not all meaningless, as well. I'll use bts as an example again, but their series "the most beautiful moment in life" has a very deep philosophical discussion and a complex story line with references to classical art and literature. The songs and music videos give a commentary on the member's rejection of Korean social norms and the education system. I compare their message to the rock band rush's song "subdivisions" which is about rejecting the American dream and encouraging youth to dream and not conform. Bts has had that message since their debut song "no more dream".
    As a bit of a music nerd, kpop songs are high quality in my opinion. Of course some of the more popular stuff tends to be a bit more trend following and less musically interesting, but songs like "sonatine" by loona, "married to the music" by shinee (my fave group), and "brave new world" by brown eyed girls have interesting and complex musical arrangements. But music doesn't always have to be crazily complex and revolutionary to be good. I still enjoy some of the simple and fun songs like "tt" by twice.
    There's also a diverse range of genres within kpop like rock, pop, r&b, edm, jazz, etc. I especially love the bounty of retro throwback styles in kpop since I'm a big fan of that, particularly the 80s such as "I feel you" by the wonder girls or "look" by red velvet".
    And of course it's not like the performers are all just attractive rich douche bags, they're all incredibly talented, hard working, and humble. Most kpop idols don't live very glamorous lives like American pop stars. They usually all share a dorm with small bedrooms and cook for themselves. A lot of them are also quite frugal and always appreciative of their fans.
    You obviously don't have to like kpop, but don't go insulting and dismissing the whole community and artists for that. You can dislike something or be critical of it while still being respectful. Just let people like what they like. Whether kpop is gonna be so hugely popular in the west for a short amount of time or for years to come, I don't think I'm going to lose interest any time soon because I love it more and more everyday.

I've also been into kpop for about 6 years, I still browse it every day, and revel in my favorite tracks. :) But I would like to add one problematic issue: companies that manage, against all the odds, to get a successful girl group, but then let them slide... Blackpink is a glaring example right now (WTF is YG thinking, forgetting about them for mixnine??) And then two groups that I stanned hard, have faded away: Miss A and F(x), both due to one member going on the gravy train of endorsements. Sure, that's great for Suzy and Krystal, but where does that leave the others? They can't sing without them, but the new stars don't have time to be in the group. Sad.

    Kpop will forever target teenagers and maybe people in their young 20’s. You have attractive Asian boys and girls that can dance and sing. The songs are catchy even though you have no idea what’s being said. Every kpop idol works their ass off and even though most of them are controlled by their companies, they should be applauded for their hard work. I think Korean rappers that were once in kpop groups could break into western music as well (CL, Jay Park, G-Dragon, etc). These idols have so much charisma that pulls in a large audience. I don’t think it’ll be a huge change to American pop, but it’ll forever be huge in Korea.

    Personally, not gonna rebutt the main subject of the video (if kpop is a passing trend), I'm just gonna drop some album recommendations and hopefully someone who reads this who's interested in seeing what the genre is about will check them out. But first I'm gonna say why I'm into kpop for those who think that the fans are only in it because the members are attractive. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of people who are in it for those reasons and hype up shitty music. But that's not the only reason why I'm into it. Is that a factor? Sure. But it's not the only reason. If I was just into it for their looks, I wouldn't have an insane number of b sides from groups who I don't even stan in my spotify playlists. I like kpop because, as Fantano said, it's an interesting genre due to how it's based off of a Korean view of western pop. This results in a lot of interesting trends and styles. There are albums and groups that have influences from everywhere, and it's fascinating. You'll have a group like Mamamoo that releases bossa nova style music and then will turn around and drop a banging pop record. You get into kpop if you wanna hear something that's familiar, yet something that's different as well due to how it incorporates all sorts of genres and trends from around the world.
    And yeah, the lyrics are mostly garbage. There are some exceptions (B.A.P, BTS, Stray Kids, some Seventeen stuff, etc), but most of it is stuff that you'd hear in Western pop songs. But you don't get into the genre for the lyrics. You get into it for the catchy songs with interesting composition and influences. And now I'm gonna drop my album recommendations.
    • Stray Kids - I am Not (as well as their mixtape Hellevator)
    Stray Kids is easily one of my favorite kpop groups and they just debuted. They take influences from earlier Linkin Park stuff, yet they make it their own as well. Their lyrics are also really socially conscious (in regards to what high schoolers go through at least). They tackle the system that forces kids to conform to a strict standard in order to succeed, they talk about being moody for no reason, they talk about not knowing who you truly are at that age, and much more. They also write their own music, which is great. They have 3 members called "3racha" that write a lot of the tracks. If you dislike kpop because you think it's manufactured, you need to check out Stray Kids. They're such a fresh of breath air and are anything but manufactured.
    The rest of these groups are also groups that write their own songs and talk about a variety of things in their lyrics. I'm not gonna write a whole thing like I did with Stray Kids for each one though.
    • B.A.P - Fermata
    • Mamamoo - Melting
    • BTS - Wings (the HYYH series is also incredible)
    • Exid - Full Moon
    • Seventeen - AL1 (their whole discography is amazing though, please check them out if you get the chance)
    Now onto the catchier pop stuff that isn't written by the groups if you don't mind that.
    • Exo - Exodus
    • Red Velvet - The Perfect Red Velvet (lots of 80s and r&b homage, is easily among my top 5 kpop albums)
    • F(x) - Pink Tape (Red Light is also fantastic)
    Now for soloists
    • Lee Hi - Breathe
    • Luna - Free Somebody
    I haven't listened to too many other soloists, but IU is the best one in my opinion. She also writes her own songs if you worry about authenticity. Her best album is either Palette or Modern Times, but her whole discography post-Modern Times (minus Kkot Galpi #2) is some of the best I've ever heard, regardless of country of origin or genre. Give her a listen

    I feel like Kpop is big in America because Americans are more susceptible to fangirling and obsessive pop culture, like the people who call Beyonce their queen, or Lady Gaga's Monsters. BTS have their army, Shinee have a thing, etc. The music is very pop oriented, easy to listen to, easy to digest; not only that but Korean work ethic is a lot different to the west, they work fucking hard here, so these people are the best of the best, they can fucking DANCE, they can SING, and Korean culture is quite shallow when it comes to appearance so these people are always the most beautiful people you will ever see. It's a shallow industry designed to make a fuck tonne of money by merchandising everything but there is a lot of talent in there admittedly. I get goosebumps when I see EXO dancing the chorus of Monster, fuck me that leg work.
    There's also some genuinely good KPOP written by the artists themselves and beautifully produced, for example Jonghyun's solo record 'She Is' and Taemin's solo record 'Press It'. being here living and working in Korea I'm exposed to a lot of it, and it really is a culture of obsession. my students will turn up with pictures of their idols with them, just carrying it around.

    not sure if anyone has disputed this comment already, but bts' members do take direct participation in the composing, writing, and production of their music. of course, there are groups that do have an entire team of music-makers working behind the scenes but recently there has been a surge of what we call "self-producing" idols where many of them are starting to write and compose their own music. and i agree that these people (with the sudden popularity of bts) seem to think it's a passing trend when really, kpop has been around for a g e s and international audiences have been listening to kpop for literally ages!!! it didn't just start in 2017, it's been here for a while. it's kind of a super western-centric tendency to just talk of it like how america reacts to something is the only thing that matters.

      aohorii suziya idk where you've heard about it but i never claimed they produced every single song they've put out. they have been credited for a handful of their songs. but if anyone has said otherwise then you have a point, for the most part they have other people producing their songs. i just think it's unfair to discount the effort that they've made to produce a number of them

      starryknight What's your point? Pop groups have written their own music since the 70s, that's not new by any facit. Beastie Boys, Sugar Hill, Run DMC, and now Brock Hampton, and N.E.R.D. K-pop isn't innovating by any means, and even furthermore I guarantee that most K-pop groups aren't like whichever group you're referring to an have their own writing teams. Hell I bet that BTS has a writing team as well even if they help with the process. Whereas Brockhampton Sugar Hill and N.E.R.D *are* their writing teams.

      Eryk pannell WHERE in my comment did i EVER say that kpop was being innovative by having some idols write their own music??? my entire point was that i am TIRED of people acting like every idol in the kpop industry is just a puppet. my point is that i'm tired of people discrediting the work they put in. to address the second half of your comment, in the cases where idols do not write their own music, WHY does that render their entire career invalid? why does that make their effort as performers invalid? why does that not make their music real? they give their writers, composers, and producers credit where credit is due. it's not like they're claiming to own anything that isn't theirs. the most excellent classical musicians perform pieces someone else has composed. i daresay there isn't anyone who would contest their worth as a musician. so WHY is kpop considered to be inferior to brockhampton, sugar hill, nerd? fucking enlighten me because i don't seem to understand

    I don't like KPop, I prefer JRock (Japanese rock, majorly One OK Rock). But since Asians out there are making moves (I'm Asian), I support them. // The only thing I hate is, the fandom. They're so toxic. You say one thing about their idols (for example : "Taehyung's tie doesn't go with his shoes") you will receive an essay's long lecture (how ignorant you are about fashion or how blind you are), and a death threat at the end. And it's funny when white people try to get into the Asian culture. I mean, I don't find anything wrong with it (some people do, and will accuse the said white fans as racist) but there's this one German KPop fan who said she is in transition into changing herself from being German to Korean. It's just so funny tbh.

    I don't get the hate for Korean music, I think their continuing infiltration into western pop culture can only be a good thing. I used to believe the American mainstream won’t give East Asians a chance to succeed in the music industry. Let's face it, to an extent, that's the reality. They think an Asian artist won’t sell or isn’t as marketable as a White, Black or Latino artist. It's nice to see considerable hype and major backing behind an Asian face in this industry, and not just as a walking-talking meme like Psy was. 🙄

      That's mainly from the three biggest companies (JYP, YG, SM), BTS came from a small company that was nearly bankrupt. They all slept together in one room, and none of them have had plastic surgery. They also aren't even THAT popular in korea, if they walk around in Brazil or the US they have a higher chance to be chased by fangirls than in Korea.

      tyler Way to downplay your faves' popularity. Sure they're no EXO or Wanna One domestically but their fans in Korea do skew younger (like, school age) so it's not like the bulk of their fans have the time or energy to chase them around 24/7 but they gain popularity every time they drop their softer tracks (I Need U, Run, Spring Day) and while they may not have single-member recognition like groups like EXO they have major name and brand recognition. Like, if you say BTS people will know them and at least one or two songs of theirs.
      Also groups from smaller companies get plastic surgery too lol

    • @xstoofpeer
      @xstoofpeer 6 років тому +3

      RM has a very distinct nose, really small with almost no nose bridge. He has always had that and if he would get plastic surgery he would make his nose more normal right?
      J-Hope always has an artificial looking nose, so even koreans thought he had plastic surgery. But than they released his school pictures and he had the same nose even then. www.koreaboo.com/uncategorized/bts-j-hopes-school-photos-shuts-down-rumors-of-plastic-surgery-among-netizens/
      And BigHit would not have money for plastic surgery in their debut years. The one that changed the most is Jungkook, but he was 15 at the time of his debut so it's natural that he changes a lot.

    As someone who listens to K-pop on a semi-regular basis, I personally grew to love it. Looking at the formulaic style of both Western and Korean pop music, it's clear how they both became popular music genres to begin with.
    The overall attitude of both genres is similar, but the lenses that the groups/artists themselves view each genre is quite unique. As Anthony said in the video, South Koreans are able to look at Western pop music in a 'bird's eye view', without the cultural aspects of the living in the west altering their perception of the music. What I have found in recent years is that many Asian countries, in general, are becoming influenced by Western ideals, behaviors, and other major aspects of Western culture. This is most noticeable in the music and fashion industries.
    The K-pop group I listen to the most frequently is the boy band BTS (Beyond the Scene). I've started listening to their music in early 2014. Since then, I've listened to a majority of their music and followed them during their musical career. In my opinion, this group embodies the influence the West has had on South Korean music, so I'll use their career as sort of a 'case study.'
    BTS is a group of seven members, under the company BigHit Entertainment. BigHit (ironically) began as quite a small company, with no noticeably popular acts being produced for quite a while. When BTS debuted on June 12th, 2013, with their song and music video "No More Dream," which was heavily inspired by Western hip-hop music, no one suspected that they'd become a group like they are today. Due to their low visibility at the beginning of their career, BTS could barely afford sustainable meals for periods of time, yet they continued making music and doing what they loved.
    BTS consists of Jungkook (the youngest, vocalist) V - aka Taehyung (the second youngest, vocalist) Jimin (the third youngest, vocalist/dancer) RM - previously known as Rap Monster (the fourth oldest, leader of the group, rapper) J-Hope (the third oldest, rapper/dancer) Suga - has a separate rapper identity known as Agust-D (the second oldest, rapper) and Jin (the oldest, vocalist). Unlike many other K-pop groups, members of BTS typically write and produce most of their music, or at least have some influence on the tracks created. Suga, RM and J-Hope are very involved in the production and creation of all BTS albums and songs. The group as a whole began their music career based on hip-hop, with their debut album '2 Cool 4 Skool' reflecting typically hip-hop beats, flows, and attitudes. However, as they grew, they began to experiment with more styles of pop, R&B, and electronic music.
    The most recent album (as of December 13th, 2017) is titled 'Love Yourself: Her', and was released September 18th, 2017. The album is heavily influenced by the electronic genre, and was mainly written by the rap-line of BTS. Ever since the group's debut, BTS has written their songs over a variety of subjects. Many songs talk of hardships involving school, relationships, etc., and they tend to target a young adult/teenager demographic. However, they have produced many songs also discussing politics, ethical problems, and so on. BTS makes music to promote specific messages, typically with a deeper meaning than first observed by the listener.
    Naturally, like all pop groups, there are many love songs and the like. The point is, however, that there are K-pop groups that spread their creative wings to connect and relate with the consumers, whether it be through a love song or a hardcore rap track. As said previously, I believe that BTS showcases this the most often, and with the most frequency.
    In my opinion, K-pop will likely stay for quite a while, as long as it adapts and continuously relates with those who listen to it. Despite all of the positives, there are plenty of negatives to certain aspects of K-pop, such as strict schedules, long hours of extensive exercise, some idols starving themselves for comebacks, etc., with attention to these problems, sensible companies and managers will change. It'll take dedicated, educated fans to bring to light these issues, allowing the idols to blossom healthily and responsibly.
    While K-pop has some structurally imbalances, so does Western pop. Instead of all of the impurities lying mostly in the companies, like with K-pop, Western pop artists themselves tend to make some irresponsible choices, as would many artists under immense pressure from the public to maintain a good image. Clearly, the two genres are similar, yet they grew from different backgrounds. They evolved contrastingly, despite having the same goal; to be popular.
    Sorry for the long essay, but this topic really hits home for me. I wanted to help give context to anyone who doesn't know K-pop, so sorry if those knowledgeable in the subject find this redundant. Have a wonderful day/night/evening

    Man I don't really understand the comments saying "i liked kpop but the fandom turned me off of it." Fandoms should have no effect on how you enjoy an artists music. I recently went on a subreddit and discord related to BTS to check it out and people are just being nice. People even criticize things and just have normal discussions about it. I have been consuming kpop content for like 8 years and never had any bad interactions with fandoms. In fact I rarely interact with them. I just listen to music and watch videos, occasionally comment, and nothing happens. I think you would have to actively seek conflict to experience the crazy fandom. Like where are people hanging out online that they are somehow experiencing a bunch of crazy fan stuff? Maybe you commented on something, and someone responded like a dick? That happens no matter where you comment on the internet because the internet is full of crazy illogical people. Every genre of music has it's cray fans with a superiority complex that think "this music is better than all other music and everything else is trash". All I'm trying to say is, if you like the music, listen to it. Don't care about what other people are doing.

    A lot of kpop productions are outsourced to american production houses, in many cases it's not so much korean artists having a perceptive grasp of western music & putting their spin on it so much as them hopping onto the same production line.

      "A lot of kpop productions" limit that to mostly one company in Korea and that is SM entertainment. Chances are that smaller companies can't afford foreign producers to stick to their own. It's more western than just American, and the one label that outsources the most to western producers and has the money to is SM Entertainment. What I like about their outsourced material is that they're a mixture of modern and older sounds in pop, especially when talking about R&B music. SM has an incredibly flawless record of getting the most nostalgic and soulful R&B music that is simply very hard to find in the west.

    i know this is an old video but i finally watched this after i, myself, got into kpop 😂
    so far my opinion/conclusion is... kpop is fun because of the culture surrounding it. i feel like the biggest appeal is we're watching fairly good looking people interact with each other. we get to see them almost every day through social media and contents in a way that we will never see a western artist be. it feels very personal and you'll get overwhelmed by the amount of content these days. and i also feel that most kpop fans like the music because they see how its made and see how hard the members' practiced that its hard to dislike the songs. with western artists, i have moments where i seek new sounds or perhaps at some point i got bored with an artist because they got the same flow in every track. but with kpop artist i mostly enjoyed it because im watching them... so its an audio visual experience. i mostly still listen to rap when im working to get me amped, and listen to rnb when im chilling. but with kpop i feel the need to WATCH, not only listen. most kpop are well made pop songs so i think its fine to enjoy them. i totally agree with the statement they're not trying to break new grounds but just trying to play on the same level. i feel most kpop does thrive off of trends tho
    also, i have tons of friends who got into kpop or kdrama because they actually got tired of western media because of how gloomy/serious/dark they are. most of these people got into kpop to escape and i guess thats why a lot of kpop are feel good songs with gorgeous visuals to distract/ease the mind. i think this aspect also matters on why kpop is successful

    I like KPOP, it's literally what that one commenter said - it's just Korean Pop. There's no difference in innovation but the themes of the songs are very different. Ignoring groups or singers that are supposed to be 'hard' like Big Bang or BTS or any Kpop rap in General (or Khiphop), the genre has a lot of weird music that is obviously tailored to the younger generation. The boy crush songs, girl crush songs, annual release of Christmas songs with every member of a company being involved in a cheesy music video, it's wholesome.
    Kpop reminds people of a world before you had responsibilities, it's so pure it brings people back. This is ignoring the groups that specifically focus on being sexy and selling sex.
    Personally, I think Kpoppers are delusional in that they think Kpop is going to change the game, I highly doubt it's going to TAKE OVER the world or blow up as big as they think it will. I think the level of fandom is going to stay the same as it is now, maybe a few more stars will appear but I think it's just going to be one of those things where some people will have a kpop song or two on their playlist, and that's it.
    With that being said, I don't think anyone would mind that. People are still enjoying BTS and SNSD in their own time, if you find them you can just enjoy their music, they don't necessarily need to blow up.

    BTS isn´t generic in my opinion, they studied western music and then they make it their own but a little bit different and with other messages, or at least for me it feels fresh. BTS isn´t successful just bcs of their producers or company (that´s a fact not my opinion)... almost everyone that has been listening of them for a while knows that they have grown from the bottom, they produce and help producing most of their dances & songs. But don´t misunderstand, as an army, I´m very thankful to this critics bcs it helps them to improve; and, now one of their goals is that: to produce and entire album by themselves (I´m so hype for that and ppl who enjoy bts will support them anyways)
