- Listen: • BTS (방탄소년단) 'FAKE LOVE...
Though Tear has its consistency issues and its concept is sacrificed for the sake of having something for everybody, BTS is making ambitious and passionately performed pop music that puts many of their Western contemporaries to shame.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
I gave them a watch, its very different from what I thought "kpop" is. Now I understand why they're popular not only in the states but around the world
ty.
Rhiyuki thank you for doing this!
Thanks for being open minded and actually checking them out 💜
Thank you for giving them a chance! What separates them from a lot of kpop groups is the fact that they have basically complete control over their music and what they decide to put out (with the leader of the group, RM, having writing and producing credits on each song within the album). It's nice to see a kpop group discussing topics that are very stigmatized in South Korea such as mental health.
Also, despite the themes of love within the album, BTS specifically stated that much of the album can be interpreted as the struggle that people go through to love themselves and it is not necessarily about the love between two individuals; which I found interesting and important to consider due to the series being called "Love Yourself". A lot of the translations don't take into account that Korean tends to not use subjective language, so the translators interpret things a certain way and translate it in way that allow for foreigners to no fully interpret the lyrical content for themselves.
The album could easily be viewed as simply a cheesy album about loving another individual due to the language barrier and/or people not having much background on the series + the purpose of the series. Despite that, the writing truly surpasses a lot of western artists regardless of one's interpretation of the meaning. The production of the songs was also amazing.
Thank you for checking them out !!!
I was NOT expecting a review of LY:T from you but I’m glad you did. It’s always nice to hear an outside opinion since I feel like I can get too caught up in being a fan to objectively look at the album for what it is.
Thanks Anthony!
DEEP DUDE i completely agree
Agreed
Same
Absolutely
Facts
i’ve had “134340” on repeat since release.
Pluto’s song is the superior track on the album, wbk
134340 one of the best songs on that album
Same. It's the best song on the album along with Singularity and Outro.
I got them to play it at my local roller skating rink & multiple people went to the DJ to ask what song it was. It's such a funky fresh song
If you asked yourself why RM and Suga pronounce "Tear" differently in the LY: Another is because according to RM "TEAR" in English has two meanings: "tear" and "break". RM: "cry", SUGA: "tear" and JHOPE: "Fear". It's not an accent, it was apropos.
and "outro" is my favorite song. I love BTS rapline (RM, JHOPE AND SUGA)
"Tear ": to tear a piece of paper, "Tear" to have Tears in your eyes, and Fear, the fear of tear/s
true! i think its also supposed to be a reference to the whole concept universe, rm is sadness/tear (reflection), suga is anger/to tear (fire theme, first love) and jhope is fear (abandonment, mama)
YOIR MY TEAR, YOUR MY TEARX YOUR MY FEAR, YOUR MY, YOUR MY FEAR, WHAT MORE CAN I SAY? YOUR MY-
I like how the comments are either 1. non fans saying bts fans are gonna rip him apart or 2. BTS fans thanking him for his honest review
GFRIEND x BTS lmfaooo facts
GFRIEND x BTS Ikr... half of non bts fans are also being extremely xenophobic like... who's being immature here
GFRIEND x BTS most Fantano fans are retards, but we're his retards 😁
Rania Alione yeah but you have to admit that bts fans can be really immature and annoying. Thankfully those people aren't here.
Sphaerio Pegasi ain't gonna lie, our fandom is made of millions of people around the world, expecting everyone to be mature is unrealistic. So of course, some are indeed immature.
But let's be real, When it comes to people stating their opinion about bts, I've seen it a lot on Twitter and youtube, everytime we faced criticism from actual critics like here, we respond well and nicely. And if random people explain, respectfully, why they don't like bts, we either say it's ok or propose different songs so they may like it.
But if a random person comes just to say "they suck" without giving proper review or say for exemple "they look gay" (as if it was an insult) or are being plain xenophobic, you can't expect the fandom to be totally mature too.
Please don't use Genius lyrics next time. The meaning and depth gets lost. We have plenty of translators that have amazing translations. The lyrics for the Truth Untold is based off of 'La Città di smeraldo'
Koonie Which website would you recommend instead then?
not a website but @doolsetbangtan on twitter translates a lot of bts content, including lyrics. i would recommend that for a more in depth understanding of the lyrics, you check out her translations.
Koonie genius is not accurate for translations ISTG
I'd recommend the blog Muish, it hasn't translated all of their music, but it has done a majority of the songs (including the solo mixtapes.) It's my go to mostly because the writer explains a lot of the cultural references and word play that non-koreans wouldn't understand from a straight translation.
Ok melon, gonna listen to kpop now.
myncraft1 what kinda music do you like? Maybe I could give you some recommendations. Fair warning...conventional kpop is very poppy but some more modern ones are more diverse.
If you think others groups in KPop's like BTS, you'd be disappointed.. Just a fair warning though...
Lily Shang yeah… should give us specifics for us to recommend well… :)
Listen _Love Yourself : Tear_ and _Hope World_ 💕
Death Grips is a pretty good kpop group
This comment section is surprisingly not as toxic as I thought it would be.
Andy Benji It is toxic, only the toxicity is coming from people who are not fans of BTS
Im so glad to see a review of this album from someone who isnt afraid to be honest about it, even if everything isnt sugarcoated and positive. It's refreshing. Thanks man.
also so what was my least favorite track too, by far
Iz Ga same
.
Outro : Tear isn't really a love song it's about self-hatred and destruction
Chic à gogo the lyrics are literally “you’re my tear” by it’s not a love song? Lol
King Aesthetic and ? Do you tear up only because of love ?
King Aesthetic
Tear in this song means two different things
1. Tear as in crying
2. Tear as in ripping
King Aesthetic It's not a love song its a song about self hatred and destruction they wrote it in a prospective of their master selves talking to their real bare faced selfs. The chorus "your my tear" later turns into "your my fear" it is them expressing their hatred and fear of their real selves. They cant get rid of neither their real or fake selves therefore they "destroy each other mercilessy" "This is the real you this is the real me" .. if youre going to say its a love song then it has to be about the hardship of loving one self, not someone else.
King Aesthetic Read the lyrics again, but now imagine it as if it’s their true selves talking to their fake selves and how they used to be one, as if they were okay with each other’s presence, basically when someone pretends to be who they aren’t in front of others, but now this person had enough and just want to be and love their true self but their fake self never leaves, it’s always there causing a conflict.
“This is real you, and this is real me
I’ve now seen the end, and even my resentment doesn’t remain
I woke up from my sweet dream, and close my eyes
This is real you, and this is real me”
I mean, it’s open for interpretation, you can continue seeing this as a love song but as RM said, there’s more than just love between a person and another person, there’s also the love between me and myself.
I don’t know if I expressed myself clearly, english isn’t my first language, but I hope you at least get my point.
This is honestly one of the most polite comment sections I've seen on a TND video. Also, love that Dangerdoom vinyl.
First of all, thank you for this review! I'm a musician giving my honest opinion here. I somewhat agree on your score on this album, but disagree on how some of the songs were reviewed (Lyricism is crucial with BTS, they tend to do wordplay and clever literacy references that are quite interesting, you might have missed out on that).
I'm an ARMY but even before that, I'm a musician (20yr old). I don't know why people assume being an ARMY automatically makes me a feisty 12 year old haha. I pay attention to not only the lyrics of any song but the quality and production of the music as well. In a nutshell, I'm extremely picky with music and willing to criticize even my favorite bands/singers if it comes to it. I listen to literally all types of genres. I took a dive into kpop and investigated the history thoroughly just out of curiosity last year. I bumped into BTS unexpectedly after almost giving up on the so called "kpop" genre- bland, repetitive, and sometimes plastic. I was so impressed with BTS because they were simply different from the other groups. They had different attitudes towards the music they wanted to make. The lyricism was beautiful/powerful in some of their songs, and in others the choreography reflected the unseen emotions they wanted to portray. They're quite artistic. Yes, BTS still maintains some of its typical "kpop" vibes but however they tend to waver- in and out of it at times. They're really spontaneous and surprise me every time, bringing something new and fresh to the table each time. I believe they do have potential to change people's perspectives of "kpop" and also the Kpop's industry's. The fact that BTS writes and produces their own music makes them so much noticeable and capable. Because kpop groups don't typically participate in production or writing of their music. Their mechanically produced songs do not have overall any sort of memorable or heart-driven meaning and tend to avoid the topics that BTS loves to ponder and challenge- suicide, depression, education, loss, hierarchy, youth, internal hardship ect. Additionally, their rappers really provide anchor and direction for this group, they're an intellectual powerhouse that no other kpop group possesses.
I'm looking forward to their future music and sticking with them, because they seem to always improve in strange ways in every album. They're genuine and good models as well- which is something unfortunately some celebrities don't show nowadays. I do believe this is BTS best album so far! They're learning quickly, exploring new vibes while still keeping their style. If I were to review this album with other kpop albums, this album completely shits on everything with an easy 10 haha! They're doing really good. I hope they keep it up. Thank you again for your honest review! I appreciate it!
Lee Day I soo agree with everything you say and why I love them as a band. Tbh even I was prejudiced to kpop until I actually took the time to look into the lyrics. What I found in some songs was pure gold. Not to mention that despite they have their music (and now fame) going for them, they still strive and continue to work hard giving us stunning choreography every damn time. Let's not forget the intricacies of their music videos. How they tell stories and link to each other. Ah, it's just pure art. They make western music seem so basic, but I'm not going to compare.
Just glad that I can still see their roots and they're actually growing as musicians even after all this fame.
Samantha x yea I’m aware that other groups also storylines in their MVs but I have never seen a group (any genre in general) use it to deliver a message to let their audience reflect on themselves. The message that they try to deliver in their music also thrives in their videos which is awesome and mind blowing
Lee Day I know it right it comes in such a complete package. But I love the diversity in their music and things they talk about, stuff that aren't really done by most.
They're really a breath of fresh air. It's just most people are prejudiced to the kpop industry and likening them to any other boyband with rabid young fangirls, while I myself and many others are in my 20s
You said it well about BTS maintain some kpop vibe but waver in and out somehow.
Musically, first I have faith in them creating more interesting music and maintain their populace, which is a balance they need to strike; second, I actually hope they could do some frontier music innovation, that is, not only inside kpop industry, but also in pop music in general. Currently I feel they're fusing many western new elements into their songs, I am waiting for them to bring out new elements themselves. But I guess they'll probably do it in their mixtapes or in 2 to 4 years later.
BTS lyrics and messages are mind-blowing compared to almost all pop artists. The question they targeted and the message spoken by them have always been a vacancy in pop culture. Yet they are badly needed by all. What I find most powerful and interesting about BTS is that, they essentially utilize their sincere consistent communication with fans and solid growing fandom to push topics that are usually regarded as "obscure and deep" by pop culture into pop culture. That is the part I am most amazed to see in BTS.
This comment ^.. Do you have any music blog or account? I'd like to see what you think of BTS' future releases. I am a picky fan myself, so I would love to engage in discussions with people who could potentially share the same opinions.
after I watched namjoon's (RM's) behind story of the album I felt that it was meant to be much, much darker but got toned down for obvious commercial and mainstream appeal purposes, but I honestly wouldn't have minded a more gritty album that could have stayed even more true to the *'Tear'* concept. Like imagine more songs like outro or the original draft of *Fake Love* ? *Lord* .
aquard I agree and can't wait for his and yoongi's mixtapes to come out because I feel like we'll get to hear a lot more of what they wanted to say less filtered.
We just have to wait for RM and Suga's mixtape.
I can't quite remember which track's original guide he played (sorry), but oh my lord was it amazing. I love the original, but it was so haunting and beautiful
Aneesha Varma he played fake love
I feel like their label is really watering down what they want to put out ... remember when yoongi said in his live that BH told him that the songs he was working on "didn't fit the BTS tone" (and one of them ended up being we don't talk together for heize)
Their new CEO thinks that BTS' success only comes from contents for fans and that the music is second position, so they keep wasting their time filming endlessly and they end up having to do the bulk of the work for the album while touring or working on something else.
if you liked the outro, you should listen to their cyphers
I hope there’s better translations on official sites because bts are really good lyricists who use a lot of word play and have deeper meaning to their words. Also this album isn’t all about love but I guess it’s up to the listeners to interpret that. Nonetheless thanks for the review and for the good score!!!!!
ksj yeah. genius doesn't give justice to their lyrics
It's so unfortunate that most of the album's charm is in the lyrics and wordplay which is completely out of reach for many. I agree with the songs that he found less appealing from a technical point. They make a lot more sense when considering the background of each song, the story timeline that they started from debut and obviously album sales in each country. They did try to give everyone something but it's to be expected at this stage of their career.
Anele if you like the song, you read its lyrics. Why do you think that BTS has so many fans? Because they make catchy songs no one can understand or bother searching up the meaning of? No. It may not be technical but this is what fandoms are for. Bts became popular in America not only for their talents and music, but also because of their supportive fan base.
Po Ppo i didn't even need to read the lyrics fir the truth untold to enjoy it and get the message.
It had just enough english to get the basic message, and the vocals and even the instrumental were super emotional.
It would be cool if bts made english versions of their songs, like the japanese versions. Maube not full english, because that would be difficult, but maybe as much english as mic drop remix had, so more people cam enjoy their music
I totally agree with you 🙏
Etika Loves Minecraft I’m afraid that wouldn’t be good at all. And yes, the truth untold was a very emotional song and the English was more than enough in my opinion. You see, English is very different from Asian languages. Japanese is quite similar, and well, it’s guaranteed for Japanese albums to do well in Japan (They are also overpriced). But it is still kpop and their native language. You’re seriously telling me that a kpop group that became a worldwide sensation for being so popular DESPITE being Korean and singing in Korean should just start making songs in English? Are you for real?
How do you think Korea would react? They also carry the pride of their country! And all of a sudden they’ll make songs in English? Not realistic I tell you. Mic drop is as far as it’ll get in my opinion. An album is too far-fetched. Also like I said about the language barrier, they will always write songs in Korean and try to translate. It is not guaranteed that it’ll sound good in English because of the way that language is structured and it’ll be so exhausting. That’s like translating Russian literature to English. Yeah the meaning would be maybe 60% there but the way it sounds, the rhythm, melodic aspect to it would be lost
Po Ppo I said that there should still be some Korean in the songs
And korea have a much worse history with Japan than they do with the USA and other western countries, so I don't think Koreans will be outraged or anything.
And Japanese is still pretty different structurally from korean. Some words don't even exist in Japanese that exist in korean.
The chorus for blood sweat and tears is pretty much all Korean according to my memory, so if they did an English version there would still be heavy usage of Korean.
And atleast some of the songs that they don't write themselves will have been originally in English, which is the case for a lot of K-pop songs from other groups.
Edit: yes an album is probably out of the question, but single releases or mini albums like the micdrop/crystal snow/DNA album arent as hard as a full album.
BTS fans are way less aggressively defensive than Kanye fans.
HumbleBovine he actually checked them out before judging so we have no reason to defend Bts lol everyone has different taste the people who hate on them without listening to their albums are what get on my nerves🤷♀️
Viyan Bayan I wish every artist's fans had your mentality.
HumbleBovine thanks😂
HumbleBovine actually, majority of ARMYs are like this. It’s just we frequently encounter xenophobic racist ignorant reviews most of the time that’s why a lot tend to be “aggressive” but it’s just because we are passionate.
aRM 94 Oh, I was referring to Kanye fans. I wish they were more open to legitimate criticism of their favorite artist as you fine gentlemen have been.
It's crazy that the army is calm, collected, and appreciative of a 6 and y'all hip hop heads get all up in your feelings over him giving a 6 to Ye and Schoolboy Q. Hm...
JJ Nguyen I'm saying, when you have to deal with so much blatant racism, homophobia and every awful thing ignorants like to throw around, an actual critique to their music is pretty much welcomed
Because most of the critics we received were blatantly xenophobic and full of prejudice. Receiving an actual criticism is refreshing. If people just listened like he did they will get why Bts is so popular. They are literally lyrical geniuses and awe me every time.
Thank you I hope you check out the tear album:)
Also for being open minded and giving them a chance and us army a chance :) much love 💗
7* but I appreciate your comment :)
simran kaur the points not the members
Fake love isn’t about a relationship, but about fake loving yourself
just an alternative emo kid it could be either way honestly
i think it’s about whatever the listener is struggling with
I think BTS has written it in such a way that the listener can interpret it into their personal situation. However, based on RM’s interviews in the US I agree that his lyrics are about loving himself which makes it all so much more interesting.
Its actually about both if you paid attention to the song lyrics. The overall message is pretty much: "how can I give you (the other person) true love when I cant even love myself?"
Namjoon actually confirmed it can be both
The comments are making me shy and all giddy because of how positive everybody is.
Faith Doge lmao
i know all these positivity is burning my dark inner dementor like expecto patronum
CALM??? WE CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN! WE NEED TO HATE MORE!!! Here let me start :
BTS IS TRASH
wait til 4chan gets here
@@mavinpurnomo Nice try
I don't listen to k-pop, but melon convinced me to check this out
imagrillbtw thank you for being open and give it a try! Actually bts are far from kpop (which people confuse as a genre when it's actually an industry) what made them unique and stand out is that they didn't follow the typical kpop trend where you have a group that dances to songs that were written by other people and people forced to rap when they don't even understand hip hop culture (most kpop groups literally think hip hop is a 'concept' i know, crazy) BTS were ALWAYS fully involved in their music, they write compose and produce a lot of their songs, they learn about different cultures when traveling around the world for their concerts before actually using a country's distinct genre, they went to LA to learn about hip hop and two of the members actually started their music careers as underground rappers while others were street dancers, contemporary dancers/theater students, they consider music as something much more than a simple way of expressing art, they introduce a lot of literary and art symbols in their mvs and lyrics and they actually talk about mental health issues, South Korea's current society standards and youth struggles, that's why many fans talk about BTS pop instead of kpop
you should check more of their discography and lyrics I think you won't be disappointed
Yes please do! My favorite is "Singularity" and "Outro: Tear"
Most BTS fans aren't into kpop either so...
imagrillbtw Check out HYYH Pt.2 too! It's their best album to date.
So how do you like it or is it not your style?
Just an Information for non fans: most of those songs are not really about a relationship with another person the songs are about one person so the person they’re referring to as you is themselves. It’s about loving yourself
I always thought the songs were written smartly enough that they can be read both ways, demonstrating the point that loving the other and loving yourself are two sides of the same coin.
Suga once said that music is all up to interpretation so I think the songs can mean whatever they want for the listener! I think when looking with the context of the whole Love Yourself series, and even with the context of the hyyhverse as a whole, it's easy to see that this love is more about the love/hate relationship with oneself, as Namjoon alluded to in multiple interviews. However, if one was to look at the album on it's own (as he did), I can totally see his interpretation being just as valid. That's one of the beautiful thing about BTS's music and just art in general: it's always all up to interpretation :)
Most reviewers seem to really appreciate Singularity, Fake Love, 134340 and Outro Tear, which rocks because they're my favorites on the album. 👍
same those songs have mature music vibe
My exact list.
I like all the songs for different reasons but overall those four songs are the strongest.
because they are INDEED superior
Love them too 😭
BTS deconstructed the boyband genre and turned it into an art form tbh
Space & Time no printer just fax
How do I pin this to every BTS video. Please help.
toonlink i'm gonna go on a limb here and assume what he/she means is among the kpop industry
toonlink ......boy bands as in manufactured, choreographed boybands in the streaming era. and to answer your question the beatles and beach boys are great, influential bands.
Máirín Kenny don't be salty
Who are those bands? And what are you doing here in a bts album review
Go and stream and buy for those bands to make people know them don't come here crying at army for praising their fav.
i see a lot of “brace yourself for the fangirls anthony!” comments and zero comments by fangirls actually attacking him... i’m an army and i like your reviews anthony! thanks for this one!
i swear these lil boys are so annoying being dramatic when nothing is happening....they need to calm down lmao
bts are legends ! Little* not lil
Retrograde it’s slang lol
does it matter
bts are legends ! Not really tbh
Never heard of these guys. Stayed away from anything K-pop just because I'm not a huge 'radio-hits' guy but this was honestly an enjoyable listen.
boddisburgers thank you for give bts a chance please lister the albums "wings" and "young forever" you wont regret 😊
I used to hate kpop lol I thought it was too manufactured but Bts changed my mindset😂it’s ok if you don’t like them everyone has different taste but just don’t hate on them if you never listened to their album 💜
Did you even read my comment Viyan?
actually a lot of BTS fans don't like kpop that much
Same here.. I actually don't like kpop but BTS is different.
For non fans the albums ain't about the kind of love between person to person but is actually between you an yourself. Your inner battle inside which is stopping you from loving and knowing yourself.
When you try so hard to please everybody you wear a mask to be loved and accepted when you could've love yourself first.
That's the message they've been trying to send.
Why the "for non fans"? Maybe I am misinterpreting your comment but I don't think you have to be a fan to understand the lyrics and meaning of BTS' songs.
@@uw4ntsum342 because BTS always play with lyrics (wordplay).. like "Fake Love" maybe thats song about relationship but maybe its about self love.. BTS used "you" for theirself too, thats mean they wrote the lyrics about their experience or talk to theirself too.. honestly many BTS song need to explain, there are double meaning like "Ddaeng", use korean idiom like "Bapsae/Crow tit", cheerfull song like "Apanman" but the lyrics is sad, use korean culture, book, social issues as references, etc.
thats make Army (BTS fan) give them more respect and love after knowing the deep meaning lyrics.. yes because they are always blow our mind..
@@uw4ntsum342 They explain the meaning of their songs on a live streaming app for idols called vlive.
Thnx
I've been wanting to get into the fandom
But twitter Stan's annoy me and that's the reason..I don't wanna enter
@@aayushverma9681 twitter is practically the only reason army has a bad reputation. If you wanna join or just casually listen to their music, know you're more than welcome and if you ask on other platforms or on here, there's people that'd be glad to share their favourite songs with you. At the end of the day we started stanning for their music . If you need more songs to listen to you could check their albums dark&wild, wings and map of the soul 7,they all contain songs of different genres that I think you'll like.
im glad u liked the outro: tear coz its like the lowest stream in the album and i think it should really gain more recognition. The song is so good and i wish more people could appreciate these amazing rappers
cleofe coles yes. It’s underrated
Doi R. 💔💔💔
I agree
legit my favorite song on the album and weirdly, my most streamed song of the year (according to spotify )
it is bts' rap line best song for me by far, I think it's cuz it's not a flex song so it has more depth and emotion
I’ve actually enjoyed this video a lot, yes I’m an army but I know that not everyone can like BTS and I think that this review is quite accurate and honest. I agree that the second part of the album is a little worse than the first one. But in my opinion, the outro is the best song.
I really appreciate your opinion so thank you for this review.
agree! i feel like they tried really hard to do a lot of things with this album and it started falling apart in terms of consistency bc of that but i still like that album (with the exception of magic shop lmao)
Another respectful army comment, you guys are making us look great with these comments 😢😢
oof an intellectual, the outro definitely slapped.
I think alot of people felt that, but it goes really well with the concept of Magic shop. So it makes sense for the second half of songs to not be as dark as first half. Honestly i like there is a variety in this album so it appeals to a wider range. Because there are army who prefer darker stuff and there are army who prefer lighter stuff. There are those that loathe edm and there are those who absolutely love it. But at the end of the day, they are all army and BTS wants to make all of them happy so i think in that sense Tear is actually a brilliant album. People can find a song theh love the most
I don't even dislike BTS like I dislike most boy bands. I was surprised and respect that they do hip hop, and I gotta say they have explosive energy on some of their tracks, like MIC Drop for example. Not quite my style, I don't stan them, but I can respect it.
Teak thx for being respectful💜some people in the comments are just so rude and they don’t even know them😔
Teak Thank you, that's all we ask
thank you for the respect. if hip hop is your style, i totally recommend "Outro: Tear" from this album, Love Yourself: Tear. also, "Cypher Part 3", "Hip Hop Lover", and "Cypher Part 4".
I actually did listen to Cypher Part 4 on Spotify! I have it saved. Probably one of my favorites that I've heard of theirs.
bts have a really colorful discography (including solo member mixtapes). i think what throws people off is that what gets most coverage is their title tracks which are always realllllyyy high production and not necessarily everyone's cup of tea for daily listening. but they play a lot with genres in the side tracks and that's where their best work is hiding! check it out! :))
I really like your review even if I disagree with a lot of your points but I'm a huge A.R.M.Y so I may not be objective
I'm a 32y.o man from Morocco and I became an A.R.M.Y in May 2016 after listening to Tomorrow and Young Forever and especially after reading the lyrics
BTS lyrics are what attracted me the most but I think the more you know them and their stories and also the story of A.R.M.Y as a fandom you get a whole new appreciation for the lyrics
For the music I'm not an expert on it I just listen to what makes me move (physically and emotionally)
Thanks again for the review and for giving them a chance and taking them seriously
hassan ou-aly hello fellow Moroccan army. Just wanted to share that I became a fan after finding out the lyrics of Tomorrow too!
hassan ou-aly Hey I saw your Article link in Twitter, never thought I'll see you again in UA-cam .
Oh heyy hassan , from Twitter 👋👋👋
Omg im your twitter follower 😂😂💜
As an older Army, what attracted me to BTS was their lyrics, as well. It is what elevates them.
I thought it was really great that for the most part fantano didnt dig the tracks primarily produced by US producers XD
Yes ! it's so funny
I would recommend everyone in this comment section to at least listen to Outro: Tear and 134340
Andrea Escobar those are my favorites! I really enjoy Paradise as well, and I keep repeating the first verses of Love Maze (i love jungkooks voice in this song)
pretty ggukie! You both have taste!
134240 is so underrated. It's my favorite from this album.
This is probably the one critical review I’ve seen that isn’t just nonsensical xenophobic rambling. You articulated your issues with this album very well and knowing how you usually score I’m gonna take that 6/10 as a win lol.
Dukeoflords pitchfork’s review was actually quite fair! gave it a 7.1, but that’s as far as ive seen of media taking bts as serious artists.
lil pump is a 7
blingblingskrra And BTS are the actual Gucci Gang, so I imagine they wouldn't be too offended xD
Yes, thank you, I read a xenophobic Guardian review that made a lot of assumptions and it made me upset.
Faith yes that Guardian review made my blood boil! I'm surprised it hasn't been a bigger issue since it was a hair's breadth from being full-on racist, not to mention amazingly dismissive of anything 'teenage girls' like..
Edit: Oh GOD I just remembered- "the lyrics are critiquing Korean society and politics... but there's _no way_ teenage girls would be interested in that, so the only explanation is that none of them have ever read the lyrics and just enjoy the 'blank slate' of words they can't understand." I'm not a teenage girl, but this is such an outrageous prejudice!!
I love BTS so much, which is weird coming from me who is 40 something and likes 70s rock, punk, and metal.
The Reaper well i am 29 it's not weird
how cool is that
Like my friend, except she's 18 XD
Don't worry fam BTS's fandom is really variate (I'm not sure if I used the right word I'm not that good in english). We are all different but BTS connected us all into a family 😊 We love you no matter what. Btw I'm a 20 y/o edm fan and I really love seeing most of BTS fans accepting edm even tho kpop fandoms usually hate that genre so I was quite surprised to see people having positive comments about BTS doing that kind of music 😄
The Reaper it's not weird, analytics show that most of the fandom is in their 20s 30s, and a big percentage is in their 40s, i've seen so many 40s ARMY, ARMY parents teaching their kids about BTS lol, hashtags like #ARMYmum etc
For people who like hip-hop, please give it a try to BTS "Outro: Tear".
If you're hesitate because is a "k-pop" group or a bunch of guys who wear make up and looks like anime just remember "Don't judge a book by it's cover".
You'll very surprise how good this track is, which is mainly the rap liner of the group ( SUGA,RM, J-HOPE) who deliver the song, with an exellent flow and performance.
The music, the flow, the bit of "Outro: Tear" makes you "tear" up your senses. My favorite track of this album. Go check it up, you won't regret it. 👍

Totino The Pizza Boy You should've seen how the whole comment section looked just an hour ago. Just endless comments of people going "omg the crazy bts/kpop fans are gonna rip you apart." Thankfully, these comments are now less prominent but trust me there were a lot of them and they were highly upvoted
Totino The Pizza Boy Yea now there's a lot of bts fans defending themselves, but it's only responsive to the many people making generalisations about how fans would react, if u scroll through you'll see. I would've preferred if we just stook to the review but shots were being fired first : \

Content wise, what I really like about the lyrics is that you can also interpret them to talk about your relationship with yourself rather than a relationship between two people.
TuwaLiking I agree!
Well, after all, it's called Love Yourself for a reason. BTS have really explored the concept of self love and how it affects relationships with others. It's always interesting to interpretive their lyrics.
Yeah, definitely!
Well thr album starts with an intro titled Singularity, and in it‘s mv Taehyung dances with himself and overall all the lyrics are self centered. So I think you are on something if interpreting the album overall that way :)
Yoncé for President Yeah It's really up to every listener too. Just like a lot of their other releases and the whole BTS Universe itis really open for Interpretation^^
Very nice review and over all, pretty fair score. No sugarcoating, just all facts. Been listening since they dropped “Fire” and they’ve come a long way. On a side note I really did not expect for you to review this album lmao.
I appreciate how you really give the album a fair chance and really give a non biased analysis. Seriously, if half the western music reviewers could even trying reviewing like you have that'd be great
Despite some of the comments here, a lot of BTS fans are actually much older than people think we are and we’re open to hearing criticism about their music. Thanks for the review, I enjoyed watching!
Totino The Pizza Boy we don't appreciate when people dont take them seriously, these men been through a lot in their own country and kpop community and its upsetting still.. but we love constructive criticism and most of us are in their 20s-30s we even have 40s in our most popular fanbases on twitter. I think you encountered the younger side of the fandom. The older ones mostly minding our own business
I think this is BTS' best album. And I think they did stay pretty focused on their message and delivery. Some songs may sound happy and poppy but are actually pretty sad. The album is still really about hating yourself. The leader of the group really emphasized that it doesn't have to be about another person. The album is ultimately about the members themselves since they write their stuff. It's like the members' journal so their stuff always pertains to them in every way. Like Fake Love is about their dislike towards having to be a perfect puppet for society(especially coming from SK) meaning they always have two masks and have a hard time being their true selves. RM has said he struggles never knowing who to live as everyday in their documentary on UA-cam Red and references it directly in Airplane pt. 2. He says "Who should I live as today, Kim Namjoon or RM?" His real name or his stage name.
I don't listen to K-pop at all.. I tried giving some groups a chance but I didn't like their songs or feel connected with their music... It literally felt forced and the rap lines in the songs felt really forced. Then comes BTS with their wings and love yourself her and tear album.. and I've never been wrecked on a emotional level before !! Their music is so beautiful, that last year..I cried myself to sleep after hearing "spring day" and "I need you". Also after hearing they write and produce their own music, that was the last straw for me to get deep within this fandom. I'm really biased but I only listen to BTS and no one else, Their music changed me to become a better person. Now I know how to love myself :)
TheEmpress95
BTS changed me too and ur right. Their songs are not only have beautiful/bop beats but also their lyrics are so emotional and the fact that they write and produce their own songs, my life has never been clearer than before. 💕 Like in Fire, many would thought that the song is only popular because of the beat but they are wrong. JK's line *"Live the way you want, its your life anyways. Dont hesitate, its okay to be hurt."* And they are talking abt youth 😃❣️ And i think the song FIRE means burning out all the stress we do all the time and try to loosen up a little bit. *Ssak da bultaewora" this line. They knew that youth or even adult nowadays are stressed due to things like studying, paying bills, etc. 💕 They have keen senses around them and their society. Thats why they are even worth the attention.
Im a multi fandom cause i listen to diff kpop groups but BTS is my only ult group 💕

twitter is a bit different than here where half the time we are being attacked by other fandoms but sometimes we all have our fun moments only if you're truly in the fandom n stuff i've seen a variety of armys and the rude ones are evrywhere
Actually most of people in comments including myself are from twitter 😅 I respect your opinion but I think the most childish ones are from facebook, instagram and tumblr. Facebook stans (not just BTS) overall are quite toxic and that's why I left fb long ago, Instagram is always full of young and immature fans and people on tumblr always cause dramas. That's why I chose twitter cuz there are mostly mature and older fans who just want to promote BTS the best they can and they always do charity work when they can which is really overwhelming and surprising cuz fans mostly care only about their idol but BTS's fandom helps with donations a lot and always support other fandoms and artists during hard time (they also helped trend a supportive # for Demi Lovato today and I was really happy to see all the kind and supportive messages cuz I really love her and I've been a fan since I was a kid or should I say Camp Rock)

The comment section here made me give my two cents for once:
What I noticed in the past two weeks when I found BTS and observed how their fans are and how they respond to others is, that there seems to be a discrepancy of engagement with the music, lyricism and theorizing between fans on Twitter and other platforms such as instagram.
I mainly was introduced to the ones on Twitter cause that‘s the app I myself use the most to stay updated, and the fans were surprisingly diverse, kind, passionate and most importantly highly intelligent. The fandom is extremely well organized, connected with a dynamic of their own. There are accounts for sales, streams and charts tracking (globally!) other accounts translate the Members tweets, Korean articles & news in minutes and what surprised me the most was how these fans made radio airplay for this non englisch act happen in the US facing payola and giants like Drake, Taylor Swift, Camila etc.
They theorize together over physics, historical art, philosophical and post modern literature (all stimulated by BTS’ theories in their songs and music videos) while educating each other about how music industries work in all the big music markets in the world.
When they pause a scene in BTS‘ videos it‘s to absorb all the symbolic details and form a theory and not to fangirl / fanboy over their looks (which they often obviously do as well)
They are critical, open minded, global, diverse and out there pushing boundaries. The decision itself, to push a non Englisch act to the top like that and pay attention to their massages, proofs it. They made BTS top Billboards main album chart and debut in top10 on the BB Hot 100.
But their global sales are insane as well (more than a million are sold already (source Hanteo)) and 2M digital sales were made in China alone.
There is actual immense buying power which indicates that those fans don’t just waste their time over thirsting for looks, they are making moves and making BTS step into territories of the music industry no other Asian act has managed to reach, at least to this extent.
And they are open for criticism and are, themselves the biggest critiques of BTS and their music, which surprised me as well.
The past two weeks of engaging with them on Twitter and Reddit were eye opening indeed. We should let go of the crazy, irrational fan girl narrative. BTS and their fans are challenging xenophobia, sexist perceptions on female fans, norms, labels, stigmas.. it‘s refreshing.
r/bangtan is where it's at. A fellow intellectual.

I want to add more. Pls try not to use genius as a translation source. A lot of crucial info gets lost in their translations. I know it's not your fault but the next time you review a BTS album try asking around for good translations. Our fandom has many very good translators with translations that will help you understand korean phrases and stuff that gets lost in the genius translation.

I guess the translation is the main issue here, but it's been stated many times, also the thing with most of these songs is that they have to make it worth performing with a choreography. That's something the leader RM has said multiple times, they need to make the tracks danceable in a way especially the title track. I agree with a lot of your points, and overall a good review. Thank you for taking your time to do it 👍 We need more serious criticism for BTS's music like this.
KPop is not just one genre, it's an umbrella term for music that comes from Korea. Literally Korean Popular Music. If you like music there is something in KPop that can appeal to you. There are so many different sounds so don't just expect 'pop'.
definitely, I got confused when my friend called hyuk Oh K-pop, because technically they aren;t pop at all, but I realized it's because it just stands for korean popular music in a sense not just idol groups
Thank you! That's the biggest misconception of kpop. Kpop is full of different genres not just pop
Smh
infiresos ‵‵ it's really annoying to me when people fell such a big need to call groups like Day6 and FT Island "k-rock" because "it's not pop!" Like dude, it's Korean, it's modern, it's more popular, it's still kpop XD
Abigail Tovar kpop is an industry not a genre
As a very invested fan to bts, I found this super fair. It's nice to see someone's honestly opinion.
Listen I truly get where you coming from, I had all those same prejudices until last year, I'm 26 and all my life I've listened mostly rock and indie stuff, my favourite artists are Portishead and Kendrick. Then I actually gave bts a chance, it wasn't easy because in doing so I realized how full of shit I was and how ugly those prejudices were. What attracted me first was the rapping but I end up loving all their music because as hard to believe as you might find it, I've rarely came across such honest and raw artists, when I listened to Agust D mixtape what first came to mind was Kendrick, and believe me I know what that means, and once you understand a little Korean culture you understand how valuable and risky their sincerity is. You might still don't like them after giving them a fair chance but know that they deserve your respect and their success is not incidental at all.
This is for the people in the comments btw
Found a fellow ARMY who is my age group. thank you..
I agree with you, the same thing happened to me. When you overcome your prejudices you can really appreciate music no matter the genre or language.

Hey Anthony! I have to say I really was not expecting a BTS review from you. But thank you so much for reviewing this album and keeping an open mind, I know that some people don't even give certain types of music a chance just because of the language and the stereotypes around it, especially kpop, which honestly is so sad because there's so much great music out there but I'm really glad that's slowly fading away. I really appreciate it!
I'm so glad you liked Singularity, 134340 and the outro, they're my favourite tracks on the album! This is BTS' most experimental album up to now so I do understand that it may seem a bit all over the place. However I just want to give you a little bit of a background on some of these songs, namely Paradise and Magic Shop. Paradise is focused on the hyper competitiveness of society, which often tells us that one must have an end goal (dream) to be considered successful. Basically we must strive for something and focus on that to prove ourselves, which leaves a lot of people discouraged and somehow feeling worthless because they don't really know what they want in life. As this album doesn't just focus on romantic love, Paradise has more of a "love yourself regardless" message as it explores on why some may feel self-hatred when they see others succeed and strive for something when they don't know/haven't found out what to strive for. So I would say this song does fit the concept of the album. Sound wise, I guess that is just comes down to one's taste in music.
As for Magic Shop: firstly it's a song dedicated to the fans so I think the lyrics make a lot more sense knowing that beforehand. "Magic shop" is actually a psychodramatic technique where a person trades bad things about themselves (in this case BTS focused on fears - if you watch their WINGS teasers this will be so much easier to understand!!) for good things (which in this case, with BTS, focusing on good experiences in life). So, since it's a song for the fans, BTS is basically saying that they themselves are the owners of the Magic Shop where fans can go to to trade bad things and get good things in return through BTS' music. Also let me just say that this song was produced by one of the members of the vocal line, Jungkook. This was his first time producing a song! Which is not really that relevant but hey, thought I'd point it out :)
I would just like to point out one more thing: you can look at the lyrics of Outro: Tear in two ways. You can either read them as if BTS are talking to the person they (used to) love or as if they're talking to themselves. It's like going back and forth between their masked fake selves and unmasked real selves and it's more leaning towards self-hatred than heartbreak. They really try to explore all the different facets of love.
Finally there's just one thing I disagree with in this review. BTS are honestly not your tipical k-pop group, which is exactly why they have been breaking records left and right and have made their way into the west, causing the impact that they have. They have always written their own lyrics and produced their own songs, with the help of producers in the company of course, but just to give you an idea, nothing leaves the studio without RM (leader of the group - which by the way has an awesome self-titled mixtape!) approving it - he has recently shared the draft he made for the title track Fake Love if anyone wants to check it out. One of their members has even won producer awards and has been promoted to a full member of KOMCA (Korea Music Copyright Association). Additionally, not that many groups in Korea approach issues BTS have talked about in their music like the education system, mental health, politics, things that are often seen as taboos in that country. Their concepts are extremely complex, so much so that some of us fans had to read books just to understand them, due to all the literary references and more. So I really do not agree with the statement that BTS' music is formulaic or "well it's kpop of course it's going to sound like this". Other music companies in Korea are analyzing BTS' case and trying to come up with a way to replicate them exactly because they are so different from other korean groups. However I do understand where this mindset is coming from to a certain point. It’s easy to have this as an opinion when the media pushes the idea of rabid and crazy fan girls and therefore there probably isn’t any substance to the group’s music (that’s also why I appreciate this review so much!). Also their story as a group is mind-blowing, they're the literal definition of "started from the bottom and still going up" - which doesn't make their music better or worse, but thought I would bring this up as it explains why us fans love and admire them so much.
There's a reason why BTS were able to break into the west while other kpop groups that tried it before didn't. I could go on about this forever and this comment is already too long for my liking and certainly there are a lot of points I am missing. And if you've read this until the end, thank you so much.
We really appreciate this review! Thank you! 💜

I know this is a month old but thinking BTS is mainstream is sad.
BTS are "mainstream" but their music isn't. The idea of them existing is mainstream but in real life, it's so hard to find people who are fans of them. It's like seeing an army/BTS fan irl is like finding the fan of an indie band especially in countries like the UK (weird considering they filled up a stadium here).
BTS' Korean songs have such large range, you can't have listened to UGH, ddaeng, daechwita and other rap line songs and think, "Oh so generic"
Listening to just V and Jungkook's solo work is amazing "Snow Flower" by V and "Still with you" by JK are my personal favourites.
Edit: I can recommend you some more songs though I doubt you're willing to listen to it, you've already seemingly got a preconceived dislike for them.
Wow I never thought I'd see the day you did a full review of a KPOP album. Thanks so much for doing this MelonMan! My feeling about this album was pretty much the same as yours. The highs are very high (singularity, the Truth Untold, 134340 & Outro) and the lows are very low (Magic shop and So What). Personally I still find 'Wings' to be their best album but this comes a close second.
Both of the HYYH albums were my favorite, idk if any would top them. But I haven’t been following them for a bit
same same same. Wings reigns supreme in my heart, juuust above HYYH 1 & 2, the solo songs gave it that extra bit of "specialness". Hearing all the member's own distinct sounds and concepts really made it amazing I hope they do it again soon 🤞🏻
Wings? Their best album? When HYYH is Right There??

Same, _Wings_ remains in its throne.
I love so what. I don’t understand the hate. It’s so hype and feel good. It’s one of those hands in the air jumpers for me. Imagine that song in the stadium. I love the melody of the chorus and the beat. It’s not my favorite on the album, but it’s far from being my least favorite.
That Magic Shop slander hurt but thank you for the review, I also think that the transition from rapping to vocals is better than in Her for instance. You should keep in mind that they not always refer to romantic love, most times lyrics can be applied to all types of relationships including the one with yourself.
Lord Golden i was feeling very guilty about not liking magic shop so it was nice to see someone else
Yahya Tariq Oh I've seen many of people saying it's one of their least favourites, just that few would rank it last because of the meaning it holds for us. Musically, it isn't among my favourites either but being Jk's first production it's fine and the lyrics are incredibly beautiful.
Lord Golden you literally just wrote down my exact initial thoughts. Wow, great minds think alike
Lord Golden no offence magic shop is my least favourite too...
This comment secction is an example at how media portrays fans of bts aka "the rabid immature female fandom" (Thanks Ellen, The Guardian, ABC, BBC 👍) ...And the boyband itself... Many of the followers waiting for the "attack" ... And the surprise of finding nothing like that is hilarious...
When people actually takes time to listen to their album and takes them seriously (at least to give a review) as the artists they are and give reasons to like it or not with respect and common sense... you won't find disrespectful fans whatever we agree or not with the review :)
I agree. In fact most of the hate comments this video is getting are those who didnt expect a review on a Kpop album. Anyway Anthony Thank you for your honest review and insights on the album.
Jay Jin the fact that he even tried to "understand" the lyrics is a big plus...Most of those bts review videos made by fans or even kpop reactors weren't even trying...Lazy and subjective af..."oh the sound it's dope/lit" and that's it...No opinion on instrumentals, flow, vocals or harmonies...
I wonder if BTS will be ever taken seriously...At least we are very vocal about their lyrics and serious topics every time we face "reviews" based on race, apperance and language instead of music/lyrics themself...Well I can dream at least
Something that I would like to leave here:
I am not an expert in music, nor music critic. I am an ordinary person who, before discovering BTS, used to enjoy the rock of the 60-70s, the pop of the 80s ... Let's say, a person who enjoyed the classics and above all a lover of instruments, voices and messages in music.
For those who pass by here and dont know BTS I ask you not to judge them based on promotional videos or Mic Drop. Because, even though those are songs that I like, these dont entirely represent the work of BTS.
I strongly recommend that you take a look at the albums "The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever" and "Wings: You Never Walk Alone". Please listen to the songs and with subtitles. In my opinion, these albums have almost all the best of BTS. Musically, in lyrics, voices and choreography will not disappoint.
Thank you for your criticism:)
However:
a) Genius is not a trustworthy lyric site;their songs are full of metaphors. Heart break is not the only thing they talk about in this album.
b) the order of the songs is connected with the storyline their videography follows. After magic shop and apart from the outro:Tear the songs get "happier". You can easily understand why by looking at the meaning of magic shop:a psychodramatic technique that exchanges fear for a positive attitude.
Since the story of the BTS universe is heavily connected with psychology and neuroscience-among other fields(for ex astronomy or literature)- we are sure that they chose the song order for the reason above.
*excuse my English I'm not a native speaker*
frideriki stef DEFINITELY
Half of the comments are none fans saying “omg just wait for the crazed bts fans”
The other half are the so called “crazed” fans thanking this man for giving an honest and positive opinion on the boys ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jess C lmaoo 😂
BIXHSHS WHEN TF did this get 200+ likes lmaooooooo
People going on about BTS Stans gonna tear him apart, and it probably will happen, but I'm a BTS stan and I'm just happy to see Melon reviewing it. 6/10 is a very fair score
how come every single bts fan start their comment with 'thank you for the review'. Is there a hidden conspiracy or are they all genuinely that nice?
Lance A lol.. We are not always this nice. We love this review because it give reasonable and constructive critism and input to BTS musics. He focus on their music and lyrics not like some other reviewers who have prejudice againts bts and generalize it as just a manufactured and generic kpop music sang by beautiful korean boys.
We like critics with real arguments.
But if someone starts being racist, xenophobic, etc... That's what we do not stand.
It’s just shocking that the album is getting an actual review !! We don’t have a lot of these lol a lot of what I’ve read is literally just the overused kpop is manufactured/they’re all fake/success is the result of crazy fangirls narrative so to actually get a review with opinions was a ride
Lance A Usually when people make videos about BTS's music they're either overly praising them because they want ARMY clicks and subscribers, or they're just shitting on them because they're "kpop" or "gay." Rarely do you see high quality reviews like this about them because sadly many people don't take them and their music seriously. Most of these people often haven't even heard their songs and yet because of their preconceived notions they hate them and don't even want to try. That's why we love this review and we're very thankful because this will hopefully make more people willing to give them a chance.
@alice i was scrolling through the comments and i saw at least 6 that started out word for word the same way, and then said pretty much the same general thing about how they liked the review. It's like you all share a hive mind.
Honestly, a great critic. The temptation is great to condemn all k-pop as a watered down version of western pop, and I guess it started out this way, however; I find that BTS has refined and refreshed many of its tropes and is now dodging a few of its traps. I still would have replaced a couple of tracks on this album, but overall the innovation in their sound is quite compelling and I have to admit, much more interesting than a lot of what's on the radio. Despite talking about love on this album, I find that they've always had quite diverse subjects and more importantly, personal ways to talk about them. I'm also very happy with the subtlety they've gained in their respective vocals and rapping style.
Thanks for the review Anthony!
Idk why so many people automatically think we're going to throw a fit over this review.... it was a good review. He analyzed each track fairly, gave his opinions on what he did and didn't like about them and why, and spoke on BTS as musical artists. Would I love it if he did more research into BTS to understand certain references and concepts in the songs that armys know and make the songs extra special to us? Yeah, of course... but he isn't an army and I don't expect him to do that nor do I expect everyone else in the world to do that. I don't need everyone to love BTS and their music as much as I do. I just need people to treat them like the human beings and artists they are, with the same amount of respect they'd give to anyone else, which Anthony did. And the cherry on top is that he actually enjoyed a good amount of the tracks and seemed to have a pretty positive feeling about the album as a whole, even though he pointed out that he felt there were lower points for him. Thanks again!

Thanks for giving them a listen, we appreciate it! I'm surprised to hear some people didn't really dig Paradise that much, it's deffinitely one of my favorites along with Truth Untold & Outro. I really liked both rap & vocal parts in that song, and overall it just sounded quite enjoyable to me.
ARMY® stop sleeping on Outro Tear.
MAN!!!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM THAT YOU REVIEWED AN ALBUM OF BTS. THANKS YOU SO MUCH.
Mariana Duarte aren’t you angry about it not getting a 10 like 90% of Kpop fans?
yam yam no. Actually, I agree with him about the fact that the concept was not really consistent throughout the whole album. I didn’t like “so what” either. But, he said that “magic shop” is the worst song of the album and is actually my favorite because is a fan song and they dedicated it to their fanbase. I’m sorry, I already did an entire composition about your comment hahaha but what I am trying to say is that 6/10 is amazing! Considering that anthony fantano rated it.
It’s not because I am a fan of bts that I have to like everything they do. It’s important to have common sense. I’m not a big fan of EDM and they have 2 songs with this type of genre and still I don’t have to lie to myself and say that “wow is amazing, if you don’t like it you’re not a true fan”
Mariana Duarte wish more people thought like that
yam Actually most kpop fans are happy about this??
I think the thing you’ve misinterpreted(which a lot of ppl have) is the meaning or point of the album.
Love Yourself: Her was suppose to be about how society kind of pressures you into having a significant other and it “completing you” and giving your all to this person and forgetting about yourself in the process.
However, Love Yourself: Tear focuses on facing you yourself and this fake version of you. You love this fake version of yourself and put a mask to become this person everyday but it’s not you. It’s an album about the struggle of truly accepting yourself.
I hope I explained that well enough. These albums are also really important for youth because a lot of us forget to love and care for ourselves and mental illness is just such a big problem today.
EDIT: I don’t want ARMYs to respond to the hate that they are getting in this comment section. Just remember to stay positive and overall just enjoy and support their music no matter what people say 💜💜 you are so tough for withstanding the discrimination the boys get daily
Racist? I didn’t see any racism here
Literally haven't seen ONE racist comment, stop baiting, if anyone's generalizing a fan-base, YOU are generalizing the Fantano fan-base, stop it and consider an evening of self-reflection :)
Also, he didn't "misinterpret" anything, you dont have a monopoly on what BTS was trying to state with the album. Its up for interpretation and just because you're part of an "Army" doesn't mean you have spidey senses for art.
Dunnohowithappens I’m just saying what the leader of the group himself said
yoongs
It's up to the artist to create an idea and the audience to interpret it. You don't need to explain the message, that's kinda condescending.
Hello sir, I really have to point out that there is a universe that connects all BTS MV's and song lyrics into one complex story. The songs lyrics don't necesarily refer to a romantic relationship between two individuals, if you research a bit further into each MV and each song, you will encounter a whole symbolism that rather than talking about romance, it's talking about self love and fraternal love. Magic shop for example, it's a song that was dedicated to all ARMYs (bts themselves have stated it)
I deeply encourage everyone to look into the fanmade theories about BTS multiverse/universe which connects all of their work as artists. In twitter there are most of the theories.
Aratta Minami this review is more for outsiders so its best that it doesnt go into theories.
And they're theories, they might not even be true. So I don't think they should be taken into account. Idk
lol Nonce Theories are there to explain the storyline in their MVs. Even someone watching their MVs in order would notice a storyline. They should be taken into account, because there is a substantial amount of evidence to support these theories.
Yet they're still theories. Like I'm not a fan of BTS, I've heard their songs and stuff but I think last time I saw theories on a music video there were different theories so idk
KilljoyTrashid this is an album review.
Not a music video series review.
this is the most unbiased and helpful review i've watched, hope bts&bh see this, tbh i think wings & hyyh is their best album, those two album are what cause them gain a lot of supporters, im curious what your thoughts about it, well only if you want to tho, no pressure, and thanks for the review
I did not expect a review of yours on Love yourself Tear.
I have to say I've enjoyed hearing your position on various topics wether I agreed or not there are always interesting take aways.
And I really appreciate how you put this album in context.
EDIT: Way off topic... Is the comment section here always like this? Interesting& entertaining.
Overall I am really thankful for your honest review. It is really great to see you take a serious look at their musical product.
The only thing I have to strongly disagree with is the choice you seem to have made regarding your *source of translations* . ;)
As you said yourself the language barrier exists& in all honesty GENIUS is just not the best source for translations.
I'd like to reccomend you to check out translators on Twitter like @doolsetbangtan @glitter_jk @vlissful
or @BTS_Trans As well as: muish.wordpress.com in case you are ever doing an other BTS review.
Yea it's a great place for killing time
oh my god i found you here hahahahah
Trust me, this is the most cordial a NeedleDrop comment section has ever and will ever be. It's usually comprised of running gags, people joking about his big ass head, ironically impressionable quips, requests, and maybe some discussion about the review if you're lucky.
Granted, it's all in good faith...but yeah it's usually a meme parade around here.
Big D. Urouge cordial? sorry english isn't my native language
i totally agree with you on where the album starts to feel a bit disjointed. the song "magic shop", although following the interesting concept of the psychodramatic technique of using a 'magic shop' in your mind to remove negativity from your life, does fall a bit short when it comes to the bgm.
tho, granted this was vocalist Jungkook's first time producing a song for their album and the group & company did want to give him a chance. im sure he'll improve his pd skills as time goes by, kid's only 21.
c.l. riri the lyrics to magic shop were heartbreaking but the song itself was meh... I'm proud of Kookie♡♡♡ he's grown so much since I became a fan in 2014
Actually he's only 20 😊
In the US that is
but hes turning 21 in 3 months so i rounded it up fkfjf and in korean age hes 21 isnt he
c.l. riri ah I see why you rounded up 🤣. And he's *22* in Korea, actually. I personally took an hour or so learning how the heck Koreans age 🙃
what an organised comment section this is
Will Ellis indeed 😂 ithoughtso tooo
Yeah the fandom (outside of twitter) is generally like this. Crazy fans give them a bad reputation but in the end those bad apples are the minority
@@nettiehealy what umm...... Armys on twt are organised af
I'm sorry but anpanman is a fucking bop, yes it's generic but i'm struggling with some things in my personal life at the moment and this song gives me hope. Whenever i listen to it it puts me in a good mood.
Pjd shut up

This Fantano/BTS crossover is super cool.
This was a solid review too! Definitely felt the same about some of the tracks, but I definitely recommend to people to read the lyrics before dismissing some of the songs. I was super surprised with the depth to the lyrics and not going for the cliche love themes that pop tends to go with.
It is worth keeping in mind that they are performers too, and that they do need to release tracks they can dance to also which may bring down the lyric significance.
Side note- as a Eurovision fan, “So What” feels like the biggest nod to Europop and at first I was like the heck? But now I’ve taken the lyrics literally and said you know what, so what if it’s super popish? :P
Thank you for reviewing this album! It honestly means alot because it helps to get people to view BTS as real musicians. It seems to be a common misconception that Army are just crazed, obsessive fangirls that only care about looks. While that is true in some cases as it is a big fandom; most of us love them because we love their music, and the messages they send - their music helps alot of us to just get through the day. Even though their albums arent comprised of revolutionary masterpieces, it is nice to be taken seriously. We know they still have a lot of room to grow in many areas of their music and performances, any sane Army shouldn't be offended by your review. We are just a very passionate fan base that want to see our boys succeed because they have done so much for us.
honestly before i started to get into kpop i really just didnt like it, and i was super ignorant about it. “how can i listen to kpop if i cant speak korean??” but then i listened to bs&t and i realized you dont have to speak english to understand the tone and mood they are trying to portray but now i can fully say i stan talent.
This was pretty much the record that convinced me that K-Pop can actually be more than just popular music. Despite sounding so mainstream, Tear has some heart, charm, and vulnerability you feel throughout the record that I very much appreciated. Although the album is very far from perfect, its highlights got me interested in not just the band's previous works, but also in other K-Pop acts. I hope BTS goes back to this level of quality, their newer stuff just disappointed me tbh.
What do u think about the bts solo music today? Do you think its redeeming bc I shared the same sentiment for their newer stuff besides be (but be has some weird autotune and mixing that puts me off)
I still think they are capable of making a great album that is better than all their previous works. It seems they have all found their direction musically with their solo works and their next work as a group will either be a total step up from what we have gotten till now or a complete disappointment
