Most of these takes are just, "Once you remove the singer's best quality they're not that great".
Which is a valid reason to claim someone is overrated, since truly great singers have multiple qualities.
Anthony is overrated because he can only review music and without that, he is nothing

EXACTLY. You nailed it dude
Here I thought the feud was between Rick James and Prince. But a rivalry with mj would have been hilarious too.
Prince is more of a tribute to Talking Heads than Michael Jackson.
@@fil4648their rivalry was outside of music. They once had a ping pong match and Prince beat him so bad that he remarked something along the lines of “you play like Hellen Keller.” They also once played basketball and Prince beat MJ although he was 7 inches shorter and MJ was remarked to have played basketball as a youth
The only similarities I can think of between prince and MJ are that they were both African American pop rock superstars who arguably hit their peaks in the 1980's

You shouldn't call Bob Dylan or Lou Reed "overrated" when they are generally not rated as top rate singers. Nobody ever said they were technically great singers. You either enjoy their style and expression or you don't.
Agree. Bob wasn't famous for his voice he was famous because of brilliantly written lyrics
Yes, some very popular ‘singers’ were technically poor. Mark Knofler comes to mind for me.
@@markshepperson3603 Even someone with a very appealing voice like Neil Young likes range and technique, it were his tone and style the ones that made him so commercially successfull, aside of his songwriting obviously.
They are not overrated whatsoever, they are poets, excellent musicians and the top tier greatest songwriters, they also have more interesting and more tonally euphonic voices than those “big voiced divas” who just warble and try to sing a million notes per syllable whilst being incapable of even writing their own songs.
@@musaalkhadim4146same for Gerry Rafferty.
Saying kurt cobain is an overrated singer would imply that people were rating his singing in the first place.
I think he is more overrated because of the story he had, his suicide, the aesthetic boys/girls wanting to romanticize all his depression, that Kurt was a believer in astrology, he liked anime, he was "in favor" of feminism, he wore dresses, etc... Many things that nowadays are considered cool and serve to fit into today's society standars.
@@marinadiamondz He didn't like anime, he didn't believe in astrology, but you are right about being in favor of feminism, but I think why he is considered cool is because he acted like he didn't give a shit about anything and didn't want the stardom.
@@skyluke5778 well, I think that in his suicide letter he made it clear that he believed in astrology by mentioning his zodiac sign and in heart-shaped box he also says so XD. And yea, I think it has a lot to do with their alternative style since those bands certainly thought they were unique and different due to having depression and not fitting into society as their main concept.
@@marinadiamondz ok maybe I was wrong about astrology but good to know.
@@marinadiamondz Right, but my argument was mainly over the fact that he never was a great singer technically? his sound was great etc. but he isn't exactly considered an insanely talented singer, he's an insanely talented artist, iykyk

Your reaction to the Prince comment is the most legit thing on the internet.
Kurt’s vocals are unmatchable. They are so personal to him and purposefully done the way they are that you need to have Kurt’s soul and artistic passion to express his lyrics. there is no faking it

Absolutely correct. These kind of things are said to get attention.
i wouldn't call freddie mercury 'bad' but nah i sincerely think queen is annoying and overrated. but ive not listened to freddie mercury solo so .. maybe thats more of a diss on queen
@@grizzlixxthis is an absolutely insane take. Freddie Mercury is a technically amazing singer. They absolutely revolutionized and impacted music in a huge way. You can personally dislike their style, but their talent and impact is undeniable.
@@strider3164 to me, technical talent is only a novelty, as a regular guy who just listens to the music. Ask someone who makes it, I’m sure its far more important. Elvis actually did have a fantastic falsetto. Very rare but it exists...

i refuse to believe that there are people out there who believe that Freddie, MJ and Prince are overrated.
There are many people who think like that the bigger the fandom the more critics you get cause the fandoms overrate their favourite artist way too much
@@gaming4life788 if you use fandom as a factor to criticise music then you don't understand music at all. All those artistis mentioned above have a huge fandom because they deserved. They are timeless legends and deserve have all the praise they have got.
I don't anyone truly believes it, they just say it for attention.
Who could listen to Purple Rain and reach the conclusion that Prince can´t sing?
LET'S AGREE: If it wasn't for Prince and Michael Jackson being two black pop artists in the 80s, there would be little to no comparison between their music
It’s like cardi b and Nicki Minaj not being able to coexist without being constantly compared and fought over which one “wins”. Wins what?
Exactly. It's all because they're two eccentric artists with similar skin tone.
True. I think its just cause they both were black and basically created the styles of the 80s... and that a lot of artists wanted to sound like them. It would've been interesting to have seen what they would do if they collabed.
Another reason the comparison is made is because many people find that prince is a better vocalist even though he isn’t as popular, so it does make sense to bring it up.
Damon Humble...Prince also writes his own songs and play multiple instruments (he is one of the greatest guitarists of all time)
Anyone who says Prince is the 'poor man's Michael Jackson' does not appreciate his style and cultural influence. Never thought someone would say that

I love all kinds of singers, especially imperfect ones but with the people who think Freddie and Mariah are overrated for example, I'd love to know who they actually do rate as worthy of praise
Freddie Mercury was the complete package and then some. The guy had a great voice and knew how to use it perfectly. He is not overrated. He was just that damn good. He could sing in any genre of music. Unlike some artists who might have a good voice but don't know how to use it. Or there's some genres they just can't sing in.
The most overrated singer is my neighbor who lives upstairs. She thinks that she’s Mariah Carey yet she can barely carry a note.
Carey a note?
You just don't like her because she went mainstream.
Some people can't carry a tune, but here this person can't even carry a note. I am sorry for your suffering.
Don’t worry I am joking. I am not old enough to get an apartment yet.

I'd agree that Mercury is overrated in the sense that he's rated as probably the best singer of all time, and while he's a fantastic singer I don't think he's the GOAT singer, but instead the GOAT performer alongside MJ. Mediocre he's not though that's for sure.
Foxglove hey mom look at me! I looked like a complete idiot in front on thousands of people!
LOL Anthony's reaction to the Prince comment was EXACTLY what it sounds like when doves cry.
I love every Era of Elvis from beginning to end. Fanthony got it right, he was good when he started, but when he came back; he had matured vocally and he a powerful control of his range.
Imagine thinking that Freddie Mercury's voice is overrated... Like WTF ? Im not even a Queen fan but there is no denying his raw talent.
Not only that, but he could sing live just as cleanly as his studio performances. I've watched so many live videos of him singing and never heard his voice waver or crack in anyway. And with his energy on-stage, that feat is damn near impossible.
Freddie Mercury can't be overrated, he can only be fairly rated as the greatest Rock singer of all time (Above the likes of Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, Mick Jagger, and even Paul McCartney who I would put at 2nd for rock vocals).
No big Queen fan, always too kitsch for me (I get it that's the point) but damn Freddie could sing and is rightfully recognised as one of the greatest rock singers of all time
Queen might be overrated but Freddie Mercury’s voice is definitely not
Pls do better research. Overrated means if people think someone is better than what they really are. It has nothing to do with popularity
It reminds me of an incident recently when I made a post on social media saying that I love a good guitar solo and someone asked me who my favorite guitarists are. I said Hendrix, Eddie Van, Angus Young, and Stevie Ray. And dude replied "Oh. You know they're all considered bottom of the barrel in terms of talent and influence."
I wanted to shoot a motherfucker.
Freddie Mercury doesn't have enough range? That is the most perplexing thing I've heard all day
Right? He had a little more than 3 octaves and was absolutly INCREDIBLE in lower and higher registers, its not like alot of singers who have a similar ou bigger range but doesnt maintain the glow and versitility in some parts of their range. Freddy was potent on every aspect.

saying michael jackson or freddie are overrated singers is like saying “water is overrated” there is things in this world that are objective and mj and freddie being some of the best singers in the world if not THE BEST is one of them
i think mariah switches between vocal timbres and registers really well and with so much ease. and even with whistle tones, they’re used in the background of some tracks in clever ways. overrated, she is not.
Exactly. Her pen is unmatched too, she's a fantastic songwriter and has too many hits written by herself to be bad in any way
The thing I’ve learned is that if your voice can’t go up a million octaves, people will call you overrated
Also, the guy who said Prince was a poor man’s Michael Jackson just should never talk about music under any circumstances ever again because I can’t imagine how anyone would say something so incredibly stupid

why are people so dead keen on a wide vocal range? i'd rather have a singer with a unique style than some generic wide range one. not saying a wide vocal range is a bad thing, but it's not a necessity for singers imo.
It's not about necessity, people bring up range because it is impressive and can sound really good if done well. When talking about vocalists range is the thing that let's you stand out. Having a high and powerful voice literally makes you stand out, it's easier to hear. I'm not even being silly here. In a crowded bar or at a concert, the singer with the higher range will be heard better than the one that sings low. There is more to it too, a good song has range in the melody, going up or down creates drama, so singers with good range can have more dramatic and emotional songs.
Of course it's not needed, I like singers who have small ranges too, it's just I don't think of them as amazing singers, I usually like them because they are great songwriters.
I think range helps with tone and versatility, and depending on the individuals it'd certainly contribute to their singing style.
Right. Look at people like Frank Sinatra, he had a range of around D2-G#4 but his voice is one of the best I've ever heard. It's not about how high or low your voice can be, it's what you can do with it.
It's not even a wide range the general population care about. It's just high notes, people don't usually care if you have a wide lower range
Range is meaningless if you aren't doing anything with it.
I don’t see how Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury are overrated. If their overrated, then how come they both changed the music industry forever? How come they sang as angelic as anyone can ever get? How come theirs no one who compares to them?
It just doesn’t make sense.
Both absolutely amazing and have a true gift and talent that will never come around again!
in fact MJ is usually underrated as a singer. i mean as a vocalist. Which is insane.

Some of these takes are just “I don’t like this and that makes it overrated”
Spot on
lmao exactly
I feel like that kinda sums up this whole community, “I don’t like it so it bad”
I have a personal take. There are certain bands that were catapulted into the main stream... Of which I have no examples but hear me out... There are certain bands that could have stayed on the DL and they would have done pretty okay and because they were catapulted off like one good song I believe that sometimes a certain part of these band's audiences will think that they're over rated after putting out a follow up album to all that success and it gets shit on because it's not like [Previous Album]
That's usually what 'overrated' means. When there's no real criticism to cite, there's always 'overrated': "I'm angry that it's popular, and I can't stop putting my nose in the spoiled milk"
If you guys would listen to vocals Kurt did on his demos or songs he never released, he could do anything with his voice. High notes, vibrato, etc. just watch Kurt butcher SLTS on top of the pops. He sings in this low voice and does vibrato its pretty dope and different to hear

“Prince is the poor man’s Michael Jackson”
BRUH. Prince was such a talented musician, he practically had his own genre. Look up "Minneapolis Sound." Whoever said he's a poor man's Michael Jackson is a casual.
IMO Michael is a superior technical singer but not by much. Prince had better range by a decent margin. Prince was a better instrumentalist by large margin but that's true of almost anyone compared to Prince. Michael was probably a bit better of a songwriter but at that point there are no losers.
The idea that either could be a poor man's version of the other is ridiculous.
@@Adamdidit I'm a huge MJ fan but c'mon, Prince's songwriting ability exceeds Michael's by a long shot I think. Prince was technically more talented as a musician and instrumentalist, Michael was way more talented as an overall entertainer and and just a hugggee solo icon and phenomenal talent. It's like comparing David Bowie to James Brown... One was an instrumentalist singer, one was an enigmatic entertainer.
Singing? Prince had a bigger range, while Michael was technically superior in terms of vocals and technique... I agree with you, would edge to Michael more

With Cobain: thats literally the genre. Its grunge. Grunge is supposed to be the dirty, fuck the world kind of rock subgenre.
Yea but that don’t really make him a good singer
@@WillWright-lx4hf but if we like the music, doesn’t that mean he’s good to people that like Nirvana?
He does grunge because he sucks too much to do anything else.
Also, Just because its grunge doesn't mean the vocals have to sound like a dying lord of the rings cave troll. Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, and Layne Stanley are some of the best rock singers of all time and they all fall under the grunge genre will providing coherent singing.
@@Top10Dylan nah maybe he sucked at guitar but if you listen to mtv unplugged he had some great acoustic vocals
Actually, in general, most modern pop songs and singers are repetitive and nothing special in singing styles and ranges and tones, and in melodies! I listen to some pop though, but really, often nothing groundbreaking or epic or have variations and great transitions in melodies, great variety in vocal styles, great special vocal range!!!
I’m not a metalhead, but i love some heavy metal/hard rock/psychedelic, etc., especially in metal, you can see all the ranges, all the styles, all the transitions, all the paces and speeds, all emotions! I really respect that!!! Especially old school heavy metal/hard rock which i prefer! I don’t know if i explain it well!!

Kinda true
too many pretentious wannabe critics. you show them a groundbreaking and technically impressive record and they'll say its "mediocre, basic, uncreative and uninspired"
The thing is, when something is popular at the current moment people don't like it. But then when it starts to fade away and becomes a different generation, THEN people start with all the "oh they were brilliant I wish I was born back then"

People compare Prince and Michael Jackson because they are both eccentric black musical geniuses with a high register voice. Nothing to do with their actual style.

There was also a sort of tension between them back in there day, wasn’t there? Like there was beef?

Adele has an amazing technical ability and tone. I don't know why people treat her like she's nothing without that voice. They did the same thing to Mariah. Just appreciate these voices before they are gone
Her technique is AWFUL. It’s why she strains and struggles to sing her own songs live.
Amazing? She’s average technically.
@@quents
Actually Adele has a good technique as she knows how to use her voice but her range is limited. She knows how to make use of the range she has. Not all singers have to have a massive voice like Whitney Houston.
I feel like the guy talking about Patton only listened to the real thing and some popular tunes of the Faith no more band. I personally think that Patton has what it takes to be loved and hated. That what’s making him a talented vocalist. His range is phenomenal and the variety of style he can work with is surprisingly insane. Mariah whistling too much is a misconception. Maybe at the beginning of her career. By the way . This is from his most famous song
" But she never lost her head even when she was giving head " ....

I feel like the idea of "Overrated" is lost on most people because, no one has ever considered Bod Dylan or Lou Reed great singers, also you've confused overrated with annoying or not your cup of tea...You may not enjoy Mariah Carey's massive vocal range BUT it DOES require immense talent and ability to do what she does. That's not overrated, that's just not your NOT your preference. Same with Michael Jackson, it doesn't matter if his ability irritates YOU, he is a fantastic vocalist....and the Elvis knock is a bit irritating as well, as a Baritone? he's elite, never heard him off key in any performance, as far as deep notes go his range is rather impressive, what he does? he does so extremely well and yes expanded upon that ability as an older Vegas performer
Also completely lost on the guy in this video as well.
Pls do better research. Overrated means if people think someone is better than what they really are. It has nothing to do with popularity
@@misskoreajisookim2843 Who do better research? is their a comment i'm not seeing?
@@misskoreajisookim2843 but you can't say Bob Dylan is overrated as a singer, because no-one has ever really claimed that he's a great singer, a great songwriter and artist yes, but I don't think anyone has ever claimed he has an amazing singing voice, therefore he's not overrated as a singer. This is mostly just a list of performers that people don't like, and the word overrated is bandied around when people really mean they just don't like something.
You could apply that logic to most highly rated singers. There's always something to redeem them but that doesn't mean they can't be overrated. Not saying a lot of the takes in the video are correct though
You could say the same for Elvis that you said for Post Malone. Not a big range, not a technical singer, but you know Elvis is singing when you hear him. There's no mistaking it.
You can't fairly compare Elvis to singers who came after without acknowledging that he influenced nearly every singer who came after.

Elvis is the biggest culture vulture thief of black music that has ever existed. Even his vocal style is a rip off of Roy Hamilton.
In my opinion people ONLY compare MJ and Prince because they were both similar in physical appearance. Couldn’t be more different musically the only thing they share is being pop stars but for totally different reasons
the reasons were the same: they were both insanely talented and full of musicality. Not even their styles are different: they were both inspired by James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Little Richard. Still they were both able to create somethin unique, that's instantly recognizable.
They were both kind of feminine and gender-bendy
@@richardkovacs2006 Their styles were completely different. For one, MJ collaborated with Quincy Jones who wrote most of his iconic tracks and Quincy Jones, while a genius, had a completely different take on pop, fusing pop R&B with elements of jazz. Prince had a much wider breadth of musical proclivities and borrowed far more from new wave, rock, and funk, as well as jazz. Furthermore, Prince mixed his albums completely differently, allowing different instruments to take center stage, whereas Jones always make Michael's vocals the heart of the track. Fantano is correct that you'll never mistake Prince for MJ sonically. They were completely different.
You’re probably right, I never listened to them growing up and missed their fame years, so basically I just have their appearances and reputation to go off of, which is why I always mix the two up
Their only similarity is that they were both slightly feminine black male pop stars in the 80s
If you say Prince is a “ poor mans Michael Jackson” I’m willing to bet my life that you haven’t heard more than 5 Prince songs
3 at a push and even then take each of their biggest hits: in what world is Purple Rain similar to Billie Jean? Raspberry Beret to Thriller? This take annoyed me more than it had any right to I didn't think there could be a worse take than the Freddy one, but the internet proved me wrong
James Kilgour As a Prince stan, I found the take to be hilarious
Heard Kiss and that's it

Adesina Adeniran MJ had less great albums, Thriller is my top 10 of all time but consistent discography wise Prince>MJ.
Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley changed the world and all the music today. Elvis could hit amazing low notes, listen to the “can’t help falling in love with you” song, his vocals in the back, immaculate. Obviously, I don’t have to explain why Michael changed music forever. He dominated music for 20 years and more. Not only was he an amazing dancer, he could do it both at the same time. He was making people faint from just standing still for 2 minutes (halftime show). Watch one of his concerts and you’ll see
Are we just going to breeze past the dude that disrespected Mike Patton like that. Am I a Patton stan? Absolutely. Still, the man's talent is not to be questioned, he literally has 6(!) octaves of range. He really is the full package. He can soothe (Lovage) or scream (Bungle, FNM, Dillinger) and even spit on occasion (Peeping Tom). He can also just belt shit out like nobody's business.
Some of his experimental projects aren't very appealing to me (Fantomas, Corpse Flower) but he has an outrageous amount of flexibility in his voice and has used it in every which way imaginable.
