Oat milk changed my life when it comes to coffee. I dont even actively avoid dairy but i litterally can't enjoy a latte if the milk in it isn't oat lol

Same here! I can drink any kind of milk and love regular, but lately I get my lattes with oat milk, when I drink an oat latte it feels like I'm literally eating a hot cup of oatmeal with a touch of espresso on top.
Oatly Barista is just the best. here in Germany it pretty much became the standard milk alternative in good coffeehouses. i know several people, who aren't vegan or anything, but they simply prefer the taste of oatly over regular milk.
not a vegan but im also lactose intolerent so i've been exploring alternatives. Drinking one cup whole milk a day and one cup oat milk. oat milk will never taste like whole milk but best alternative imo.
I think it’s in the quality of your almond milk, I tried the almond breeze unsweetened vanilla and it was good as hell and then i tried buying a cheaper one and it tasted like water and plastic.
@@sweetener3599 137 degree almond milk is delicious, both naturally sweetened and unsweetened are awesome, no oil taste or gummy stuffs inside. it actually taste a little like soy milk :)
So after coming to Australia two things happened, I found out about the joys of Coffee to the point that my mates got me a formidable machine to brew my own and secondly, I found out that I am suddenly lactose intolerant after like 26 years of my life. One of the amazing Barista's at a cafe I regular (Morning Owl) recommended me to make the switch to Oat milk and it has literally changed my life. I no longer feel bloated or have the need to rush to a toilet and can finally continue to enjoy my Latte's in peace. P.S idk why but with oat milk I'm able to taste more of the coffee notes (fruity etc) as opposed to full cream.
At some point, as dairy was giving me some stomach issues (mild to moderate milk protein allergy, seemingly), I tasted some replacements.. Almond was drinkable but went back to milk after.. But when I tried the Oatly barista oatmilk, I genuinely started feeling it was quite a bit better than with milk. It kinda has a bit creamy vibe to me and it works to soften even a strong cup really nicely. Glad to see it "scored" well here. Definitely recommended. Oh and did try at least a few, cheaper oatmilks but they imo felt more watery and had a much "sharper" oat taste to them... So would prefer milk over a cheap oatmilk. Idk how Oatly has managed to make the often strong oat taste way less in the way of the coffee taste
That was very informative, thank you. I have the problem with curdling as well. One thing I noticed, milks that are stable under heat and with hot chocolate start curdling when you add Cinnamon. As far as I remember, Oat and Coconut are stable with Cinnamon, others aren't.
I usually try with full cream milk, but i amazed with coconut milk, the smell when i drink the coffee is really good, the taste are also so good. Gotta try oat milk someday.

It works pretty good, almond definatly tastes better in coffee for me! I love a good latte but unfortunately I am lactose intolerant so I pay the price if I choose to drink regular milk! I’ve recently tried oat milk and I love it. So happy my favorite coffee shop has it also.
I am interested in the health benefits of milk alternatives, specifically how soy milk can have a positive effect on blood sugar and insulin resistance. Especially since all milk substitutes have to be sweetened to make them somewhat palatable and stable in coffee. So many people living a keto or low sugar lifestyle these are interesting aspects to understand and consider.
I am currently using brand 137 degrees Unsweetened Almond Milk and Pistachio Milk, which both work relatively stable and have an amazing taste which give my freshly ground coffee an extra level of nutty flavour. As I find non-dairy milk are slightly challenging to work with latte art, I usually mix them with whole milk, but for anyone who prefers alternative milk, I do recommend 137 degrees. They also have a wide range including walnut, cashew, oat, coconut.=)
I’ve always been a fan of soy milk, even before I was vegan and chugged litres of milk a day I would always get a soy latte or a soy cappuccino if I was out and about, so for me you can’t go wrong with stocking it in your fridge. That being said I was really quite impressed by Oatly. I’ve tried other oat milks at home and didn’t really enjoy their flavour but for some reason I’ll have to figure out Oatly just seemed to be really quite good (in coffee anyway). Also I can’t believe I’ve never seen this channel before, absolutely 100% some of the best coffee content I’ve seen on UA-cam, definitely deserve more subs :):)
Interesting that you mentioned all 3 of the oat milks are stable with heat. I purchase Oatly in Canada and it curdles if the coffee is hot. I did not have this problem with minor figures oatmilk.
Personally, i found that it's not actually very much about the type of milk, if you want a milk that has a similar character to cows milk in coffee. After trying bulletproof coffee and many vegan milks it was very clear to me that it's actually not at all about the type of milk and much more about the fat content of that milk. You want a milk with a fat content of about 3 percent and obviously not a milk with a very strong flavour. Personally, i found the barrista Milk from Oatly with about 3 percent fat to be a good milk substitute in coffee. Unfortunately, i also found out that it's almost impossible to make such a milk yourself, since you can't prevent the fat in the milk from splitting even with emulsifiers. The food industry only gets around this problem by homogenising the milk. This turns the very large fat particles, that would seperate from the water after a while, into very small particles that do not split (by pushing the milk through a very small nozzle with a pressure of several hundred bars).
This is just my opinion working with these type of milk. It's funny that at our place, we used to use a lot more soy milk than almond milk. However, when Covid lock down started, the demand for Almond milk increased a lot and we ended up using more Almond than Soy. Oat is a new trendy thing that appears to get more and more popular these days as well. I tried to work with Coconut, and the smell was so beautiful, but I just lightly over heated it once and I could obviously taste the burn taste right away. So my idea is, whoever wants to drink Coconut milk should not ask the barista for the coffee to be extra hot.
Could it be people mistakenly linking soy production to new zoonosis like covid and the climate crisis (illegal fires and deforestation)? Only 6% is used to feed humans, what we need to do is cut the demand for the animals that are fed from the other ~90% and need loads of deforested space for pastures.
Hey, I have a vegan cafe in Cambodia and we use Vitasoy barista edition. Im from England and there everybody uses oatly barista edition 👌🏼. Nice video keep it up 🙏🏼
Hey wondering which vitasoy Barista are u using? I also own a Cafe and trying to incorporate Oat Barista and considering vitasoy Oat Barista. Do u have a review of it?
Well, recently Oatly (most popular oat milk brand) had a large stake in its company that was recently purchased by Blackstone, a private equity firm involved in Amazon deforestation and that currently donated $3 million towards the climate-change denier Trump's re-election. Try other oat milk brands or make your own at home!
Very informative. Recently changed to (unsweetened) oat milk as the almond barista (with the added sugar) was causing me to bloat. I have no issues now.
In the UK the leading alternative milk brand has a barista version soy milk, and it's the one I use the most. I tried their oat milk and found it produced very little foam, and had an unpleasant, woody taste. I will have to try oatley barista, we stock that here.
I routinely use a roughly 50/50 combination of Vitasoy Calci-plus and Vitasoy rice milk. Never have any separation or curdling. I don't froth the milk however - just heat on stove and pour into the coffee. But now am interested to try oat milk.
I’m so surprised that you’ve saying that soy milk curdled in your experiments! I’ve used different brands including Bonsoy and they never curdled for me! So that’s quite strange!
8:27 - oatmilk's by far my favourite alternative, followed by soy, which i grew up drinking alongside normal whole. but i thought you should know, oatly secured and equity that has ties to deforestation, specifically in the amazon. also, almond milk may taste great, but the carbon footprint you make considering how much water is needed for just one plant that gets turned into the milk... totally not worth it. i'm all here for milk alternatives, but you should also be mindful of what you consume. otherwise, this was a fantastic video! super informative and you've a great presentation.
You guys deliver nice quality videos that are informative! Thank you. I'm loving the milk pitcher you have - what's the brand? I live in the USA, so perhaps need to find one available over here.
Thanks John. The jug in the video is by Jibbijug (Jibbi Little is a local latte art champ in Aus), it's really well made, and it looks good on camera... More at: www.jibbijug.com/
Great video. At least here in Germany you also can get soy milk which will not curdle. Provamel or Alpro as a brand work quite well, even the “normal” not barista edition.
Interesting. Perhaps they use different acidity regulars in the recipe. We forgot to mention that we we used a lighter roast coffee in the tests, which has a higher acidity. Darker roast coffees are less likely to curdle with soy due to their lower acidity.
gotta really get used to oat milk tho. but its a very versatile non-dairy milk since you literally just buy oats yourself and blend them with water. oats are cheaper and more accessible for me than the rest.
totally agree , regular milk is best , and get sweeter when hot , after that for coffee, you have oat milk, which is almost like milk, very neutral in taste and combines great with espresso, this is great for those who want to drink cappuchinu after meat so it's kosher parve, and for vegan it's great too because it's from plant and not cow, also oat milk is great for lactose intolerant person that wants milk, so after oat milk you have almond milk , which is not neutral but very nutty and sweet, but it's good too [probably the best for lactose intolerant person , no effect at all ], less good than oat for espresso, oat is better for coffee for sure, maybe for tea almond will be more suitable than oat, about soy milk, coconut , rice milk.... totally unacceptable result, even i would say not drinkable, soy is almost there ,almost acceptable, it's sweet , and banana/vanilla like , but the problem with soy , it's not neutral it's very strong taste and has an awful metallic/fake vanilla after-taste,if it didn't had this after taste it was acceptable too, rice and coconut a lot worst smell/taste than soy for coffee, but regular milk is so beyond oat milk that it's not comparable to the rest, it's just perfect for coffee
I agree, most soy varieties have quite a dominant flavour with the coffee. Here in Australia, it's still one of the most popular options, so the majority of cafes offer it for that reason.
@@Th3_kn4ve yes , i use steamed milk in espresso , to make cappuccino , milk is great for dark roast , as it complements it's caramely taste with it's sugars/lactose , but for drip(v60/kalita) coffee with light roast , i use oat milk , as it has taste similar to milk but without the sugars , so it doesn't cancels the light roast taste:floral/acidic , but complements it better as it's more neutral
I make my own milk alteratives at home. I started making my own reduce packaging since Tetra packaging isn't recyclable where I live. The problem I'm running into is curdling. I make either oat, almond, cashew or coconut and sometimes combine two of the above listed ingredients. I also add vanilla extract, agave and salt. Any ideas on how to prevent curdling since there are no binders or preservatives in my milk?
sorry, we don't have any experience in making milk alternatives from scratch. Most of the products we tested had some sort of vegetable gum or acidity regulator to help prevent curdling.
I admit of all the cow milk alternatives I like oatly the best, but I was just wondering, have you ever tried steaming the liquid non dairy coffee creamers out there like Coffeemate or International Delight? I figure they might work since they are already made to add to coffee???
I guess coconut is the only one which doesn't have the strong "alternative" association with it. I always find some in the asia-section of my supermarket. Might be cheaper (per solved solids) than the other options - with soy and oat, ~10% solids seems to be standard, the coconut-milk often contains ~50% coconut. I guess I'll try buying some, and thinning it down with water until it has the ratio of bough soy/oat-milk.
Unfortunately, that variety wasn't part of this test. However, the standard Vitasoy Oat performed well so I think it's likely to be pretty good. Will have to test it properly next time...
This is very interesting but I am curious as to why the only barista blend option you tested was Australias Own? I use Oatly Barista, Vitasoy Barista Soy and Oat; So Good Barista Soy and Oat; etc and they all crema very well and taste great, but if I try the non barista blends in the brands you tested they all curdle and mostly the taste is unpleasant too. Oat milk tastes best overall.
I’ve noticed that normal milk makes me break out and I want to try an alternative however i’m allergic to soy so i can’t drink soy milk, was wondering what you would think is the best
I’m drinking most of my coffees with oat milk and I’ve noticed that some coffee taste better with oatly or minor figure, I guess some beans combine more with one or the other and it also depends of what you drink. Most of iced coffee with minor figures are not really nice but once it was delicious and for hot coffee I feel like it really depend This is just my personal experience
It's hard to pick a single brand, as the foam stability of cow's milk varies throughout the year (the proteins & enzymes change due to a number of factors). In general, we find that cow's milk with a higher fat content (3.5-4%) is easier to get a silky foam suitable for latte art.
I loved milk then I couldn't eat it anymore so I had to switch coffee just isn't the same I've found. When I use alternative milks I have to add 2 pumps or more of flavor when I can get cafe ordered coffee so I can taste the flavor comboed with the non-dairy. Can you tests on Rice Milk?
Alternative milks with added canola oils and other ingredients make for nicer foam and taste. But, I don’t want canola oil in my coffee despite it making nice art and tasting nice. Alternative milks that are purely nuts and water tend to not make great foam but they don’t adulterate the coffee either. Have to make a trade off I guess
I had Oat milk this morning for the first time ever in my flat white. It was "Minor Figures". Identical label except the caption said "barista standard" so I thought I was safe. It was awful, I just couldn't drink it. So did a youtube search for alternatives only to find in this video that Oat is as good as it gets. :( Almond next I think. Maybe Almond/Coconut blend too? This is depressing....
Oh no minor figures is what I usually avoid in cafes lol it’s very sour and almost off kind of taste. Try alternative dairy co or Califia farms oat for a less sweetened taste. Oatly for a sweeter taste. All three blend well with latte! I’ve conducted a little test myself with 9 oat-milks.
I love califia in my coffee at home but it has lots of ingredients and lots of plastic which I'm not a fan of anyone know of almond milks that don't curdle
Thank you for this video. Have you tried OATUP? It's an oatmilk that is so delicious and creamy. If you haven't tried it, You'll be impressed. I think the best oatmilk on the market.
Geez, this "comparison" is pretty unbalanced. One single barista formulated variation versus non-coffee versions. Sort of obvious why those were the top picks... they were designed for this.
Personally I think oat milk in coffee is delicious, I might even prefer it to cow’s milk for pure flavour but in terms of texture cow’s milk is impossible to beat. Soy in my opinion is disgusting... but each to their own
I love minor figures than oatly. minor figures taste closest to oatly but I just prefer minor figures, it taste better imo :) partly bcos minor figures slightly cheaper than oatly
All milks possess differing strengths of flavour.... It's a better process to work through slowly each one and find which you prefer. Opinions here are divided as well :)

In the UK the leading alternative milk brand has a barista version soy milk, and it's the one I use the most. I tried their oat milk and found it produced very little foam, and had an unpleasant, woody taste. I will have to try oatley barista, we stock that here.
We use either oat or soy milk. We have a great frother, but which mil works best? It seems hit or miss.😢
I routinely use a roughly 50/50 combination of Vitasoy Calci-plus and Vitasoy rice milk. Never have any separation or curdling. I don't froth the milk however - just heat on stove and pour into the coffee. But now am interested to try oat milk.
I haven't tried blending them...interesting idea 👌
Great job! I’m doing my own milk and I would like to know the max temperature the coconut milk supports before it’s “breaks”. Thank you!
I’m so surprised that you’ve saying that soy milk curdled in your experiments! I’ve used different brands including Bonsoy and they never curdled for me! So that’s quite strange!
You need to look at the ingredients - taste is secondary. Nasty seed oils / emulsifiers / water (from the tap?).
Well explained... thanks 😊
Brilliant review !!!!!
I’m an almond milk person but I really want to try oat milk
Really I dont like almond milk taste
Gotta try sesame milk sometime!
question: what about macadamia milk?
oatly barista is truly phenomenal for latte art. I actually prefer the taste of oatly barista in my lattes to any regular whole milk.
Have you tried Minor Figures? It’s very similar to Oatly Barista but slightly better imo
great video. can Peanut milk be used for lattee art? Please review.thnx
Can you make a video comparing the coffee beans out there? I really keen on seeing which one is the best!
Coconut milk coffee in Vietnam tastes awesome.
I love soy milk. But really if I'm honest I'm really only love 2 brands of soy milk. A lot of the other one's I've tried just weren't all that great.
What brands do you like best?
I’ve been dairy free for many years due to health issues. Oat milk is by far and away the best in coffee.
gotta really get used to oat milk tho. but its a very versatile non-dairy milk since you literally just buy oats yourself and blend them with water. oats are cheaper and more accessible for me than the rest.
Hi how do you make your oat milk? I made latte with homemade oat milk once and it tasted really weird. Thanks
totally agree , regular milk is best , and get sweeter when hot , after that for coffee, you have oat milk, which is almost like milk, very neutral in taste and combines great with espresso, this is great for those who want to drink cappuchinu after meat so it's kosher parve, and for vegan it's great too because it's from plant and not cow, also oat milk is great for lactose intolerant person that wants milk, so after oat milk you have almond milk , which is not neutral but very nutty and sweet, but it's good too [probably the best for lactose intolerant person , no effect at all ], less good than oat for espresso, oat is better for coffee for sure, maybe for tea almond will be more suitable than oat,
about soy milk, coconut , rice milk.... totally unacceptable result, even i would say not drinkable,
soy is almost there ,almost acceptable, it's sweet , and banana/vanilla like , but the problem with soy , it's not neutral it's very strong taste and has an awful metallic/fake vanilla after-taste,if it didn't had this after taste it was acceptable too, rice and coconut a lot worst smell/taste than soy for coffee,
but regular milk is so beyond oat milk that it's not comparable to the rest, it's just perfect for coffee
I agree, most soy varieties have quite a dominant flavour with the coffee. Here in Australia, it's still one of the most popular options, so the majority of cafes offer it for that reason.
yes sir but i think that milk is the best
@@Th3_kn4ve yes , i use steamed milk in espresso , to make cappuccino , milk is great for dark roast , as it complements it's caramely taste with it's sugars/lactose , but for drip(v60/kalita) coffee with light roast , i use oat milk , as it has taste similar to milk but without the sugars , so it doesn't cancels the light roast taste:floral/acidic , but complements it better as it's more neutral
think the dietary health side of the alternatives is important
I make my own milk alteratives at home. I started making my own reduce packaging since Tetra packaging isn't recyclable where I live. The problem I'm running into is curdling. I make either oat, almond, cashew or coconut and sometimes combine two of the above listed ingredients. I also add vanilla extract, agave and salt. Any ideas on how to prevent curdling since there are no binders or preservatives in my milk?
sorry, we don't have any experience in making milk alternatives from scratch. Most of the products we tested had some sort of vegetable gum or acidity regulator to help prevent curdling.
What coffe is best fot espreso
Oat drink is my very fav by far :)
Have u ever tried the vitasoy Oat Barista Edition? How does that compare to minor figures or oatly
Oat milk is our pick (with coffee of course)
What about hazelnut milk? Hazelnut tastes good with coffee
This channel is fantastic! Can’t wait to see you guys explode onto the internet coffee scene. Well done lads 👍🏽
What about Lactose free milk?
I’m drinking most of my coffees with oat milk and I’ve noticed that some coffee taste better with oatly or minor figure, I guess some beans combine more with one or the other and it also depends of what you drink.
Most of iced coffee with minor figures are not really nice but once it was delicious and for hot coffee I feel like it really depend
This is just my personal experience
Which non-dairy is best for Iced Coffee?
We didn't test iced coffee specifically. However, anecdotally, Oat milk was the best tasting (in our opinion) with coffee, so I would start there.
Great content! I was wondering which full fat diary milk brand works better for latte art?
It's hard to pick a single brand, as the foam stability of cow's milk varies throughout the year (the proteins & enzymes change due to a number of factors). In general, we find that cow's milk with a higher fat content (3.5-4%) is easier to get a silky foam suitable for latte art.
Seven Miles Coffee Roasters great, thanks a lot
Rebel Full Cream Mylk? They came from Australia.
Oatmilk is amazing
Alternative milks with added canola oils and other ingredients make for nicer foam and taste. But, I don’t want canola oil in my coffee despite it making nice art and tasting nice. Alternative milks that are purely nuts and water tend to not make great foam but they don’t adulterate the coffee either. Have to make a trade off I guess
If the cafe has oat milk I always go for oat milk if not soy
@@sarahc3305 I'm back on milk. My cow just gave birth and we're drowning in the stuff! There is no alternative...
I like coconut milk and cashew milk, but my father prefers cashew because is creamier than coconut
Vitasoy have Barista Use versions of soy and oat!!
alternative dairy milk co. oat milk tastes almost exactly like dairy milk in coffee, 100% recommend
yes, have tried that one. really nice 👌
Nice Tudor Pelagos ;)
Great video!!!!
I love califia in my coffee at home but it has lots of ingredients and lots of plastic which I'm not a fan of anyone know of almond milks that don't curdle
Minor Figures is great, our choice
Why do so many people skip cashew milk?
Oat milk is the best milk for coffee.🌟🌟🌟
Should try Okja oat milk it's amazing
thanks for the tip 👌
Thank you for this video. Have you tried OATUP? It's an oatmilk that is so delicious and creamy. If you haven't tried it, You'll be impressed. I think the best oatmilk on the market.
I need to buy the OATLY oat milk, should taste better than the Alpro oat milk.
Soy in my opinion is disgusting... but each to their own
Oatly is top tier and doesn’t just taste like porridge milk or overpowering.
I love minor figures than oatly. minor figures taste closest to oatly but I just prefer minor figures, it taste better imo :) partly bcos minor figures slightly cheaper than oatly
Which milk tastes similar to cow milk?
All milks possess differing strengths of flavour.... It's a better process to work through slowly each one and find which you prefer.
Opinions here are divided as well :)
Try Pea Milk. I find it has the closest flavor and mouthfeel to normal milk.
I'll have to try oat milk! And totally unrelated, but this guy looks like a blonde Ben Platt 😄
I became lactose intolerance last year and till now I can’t find a milk that tastes like milk , I tried most vegan milk but I don’t like the taste of any of them 😢I also tried lactose free milk but it turns out it still hurts my stomach and causes bloating
Coffee was the best part in my day and now I can’t drink it
I recently found in my adventure into drinkable milk that instant sachets of cappuccino and Latte don't make me sick, maybe that will help you?
