Plant-based milk can be pretty expensive depending on where you live, but I've found that oat milk (and lots of other plant-based milks) are very easy to make at home. You can save quite a bit of money over time, by making it yourself. Another added bonus is that you avoid any unwanted additives. The only downside really is that you miss out on some added nutrients, however, you can find them in many vitamin supplements! I would definitely recommend trying it out!
So many commercially available plant-based milks are too watered down and have stuff that are designed for shelf life and profitability and not for health. Making your own is the way to go!
I’ve made almond milk in a blender and I don’t think it’s very good but then I didn’t have a nut milk bag. And oat milk requires a specific digestion like manufacturing process to have the same sweet taste as Oatly.
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 yeah it can be difficult to replicate the exact taste of store bought oat milk, but it can still taste great, especially if you add a sweetener like dates, honey or syrup!
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 oats are great for you. Carbs aren't bad and are very filling, especially paired with other nutrients like fiber, which oats have a lot of. 😁
On an economical level, I think it’s also important to factor in where you live! Take rice milk from countries big on rice production, and coconut milk from tropical countries for example. Supporting locally produced milk made from locally abundant products is better than importing soy and oat milk!
@@suzyocean7392 Where I’m from, I don’t really see much of oat milk because soy is definitely the go-to alternative to dairy. I must have overlooked it and generalized for everywhere else, sorry for that! 😅

Most other soy products I buy are grown in Austria (the country I live in). Same goes for oats, they're very easy to grow here and I can even make my own oat milk for basically pennies. :)
@@cablesandcrochet Whoa that’s really cool, great way to save up on groceries then! I live on the other side of the world tho so our situations are really different haha. Oats aren’t agreeable with the Philippine climate so we don’t grow them commercially, just rely on product imports. Soy is a bit better off, but local soybean production is low and we still also rely on imports. Rice and coconut milk aren’t as popular here as soy milk, but I’m hoping that’ll change sooner or later because those are the crops we grow in abundance 😊
I think. it's also important to consider the ethical aspects of production too. For instance, dairy milk involves the enslavement of sentient beings, who are continually artificially impregnated to induce milk production, and then have their calf ripped away from them as soon as they're born. But wait, there's more: if the calf is a male, they will usually be shot on site or shipped to a slaughterhouse for veal. Aaaaand, once the cow has gone through a few pregnancies, which has usually worn her body down so much, leading to troubles standing up or infections, and her milk production declines, she is finally shipped to the slaughterhouse as well. It's best to avoid causing such direct pain and suffering to sentient beings!
It's important to mention when talking about soy and deforestation, that at least 70% of the soy responsible of deforestation is actually used for animal farming... the soy used for plant based milk is not the same one as the one responsible of deforestation.
Indeed, most vegan soy products have a sustainable soy farming label. On the other hand if you buy dairy milk or meat you have no way of checking if the cow was fed a whole bunch of GMO soy straight from the Amazon or not.
When they mentioned the environmental footprint of soy production, they didn't mention this- "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production. Most of the rest is used for biofuels, industry or vegetable oils. Just 7% of soy is used directly for human food products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame beans, and tempeh." -Our World in Data

Well, they did It cleverly. From a nutritional point each has their pros and cons, so no one comes at a head, but if you're talking enviroment, cow milk Will never be as efficient as plant based, just beacuse physics. The clever part was being completely neutral and state all the relevant facts, of both sides, in an unbiased way, hoping the people understand them and create their own opinion. They could have just put the side they were most interested in (like many do) but that would be way worse. That would be influencing your viewers by hiding key aspects of the conversation.

This should be taught in school worldwide. The dairy lobby in Denmark is very strong and about 5 years ago they made the government illegalize the labelling of plant based milk as milk, because it is "confussing" making people buy the wrong milk unwillingly.
One aspect of plant based milk that is overlooked in this video are that plant milks last a lot longer in the fridge and are less likely to contribute to food waste.

Oats are such a cheap product, why would you be willing to pay the same price as dairy milk for that... It's literally watered-down grains. Milk-replacement companies are profiting so much off of naive people.
Just because it costs more, doesn't mean they profit more. Normal milk has the advantages of economies of scale, plenty of separate suppliers and quite some hefty subsidies
I think this kind of thing should be taught in a new subject in schools. If we actually teach this kind of thing, the next generation will have an even bigger understanding of what their impact as an individual and as a society really is. 3:34 The reason why soy bean production contributes to mass deforestation is because of the increasing demand to feed livestock... not because of the demand to create soy milk or other soy products.
The part of the grain used for animal feed is the by-product of the food produced for human consumption or fuel production. If there were no livestock to eat this, the same amount of grain would be grown, the same amount would go towards human food or fuel, just the by-product would be thrown away and wasted, instead of being fed to livestock, which in turn feed people.
I’ve always found it curious why they call it almond milk considering it’s not dairy. Then someone pointed out the alternative is calling it nut juice.
This was actually a point of contention with the dairy industry & they tried to get legislation passed that would bar plant milk from using the word "milk." This is why you'll see some labels use the term "mylk" instead to get around this.
@@Janexcalibur I read about this. It’s not surprising to me because the USDA requires milk and not water to be served at schools. Schools don’t have an option.

Environmental impacts and exploitation of animals in creating dairy milk motivated my transition to plant-based options. For cow milk, one strategy to increase output is to keep the female cow in a continuous cycle of pregnancy through artificial insemination so milk is being produced. Additionally, they are separated from their offspring shortly after birth, which are destined for the same fate or shipped to be slaughtered for their meat. A lot of non-human animal suffering is made invisible to us because we benefit from it, but we can rise from our own ignorance.
Traditional farming had none of those problems. Overpopulation and rapid urbanization created a need for factory farming, which relies on those methods.

I like how this quickly turned from nutritional values of milk to deforestation, long-term environmental impact, water conservation, and practical land use.
Something important to note regarding deforestation for soy beans: most of those soy beans go to feeding cattle, where the soy beans used in soy milk are from sustainable sources. If you're worried about soybeans causing deforestation, soy milk isn't the problem, but rather meat and dairy.
If everyone transitioned to soy milk, production of soybeans would have to ramp up so much that I doubt the "sustainable source" model could last. The price would also have to come down. At my local Walmart, for example, dairy milk is about half the price ($ per half gallon). In order to make it more affordable, you need cheaper sources of soybeans and mass production to accomplish that.

That is just a goal, and by working towards it we reduce our impact on the planet and ALL it's inhabitants.
@ Yeah, I'm not a fan of those terms either, or labels in general. I rarely say that I'm vegan because it triggers people and they start being aggressive towards me. XD It must be because of the many loud, "militant" vegans out there haha So I guess I was then triggered instead! Funny

Oat milk is hands-down my favorite. From experience:
- I'm lactose intolerant so no OG milk.
- Soy milk gave me gas, lots of it.
- Almond milk irritated my stomach for some reason. Might be the carrageenan, but hard to find one without it around here.
- Hemp milk wasn't too bad. It was a bit too rich for my preference though, and a bit too specialized/expensive.
- Rice milk was the easiest to down by far, but a little on the expensive side.
- Coconut milk: If you can get past the flavor, it's honestly not a bad alternative imho. I couldn't get past the flavor.
Have you tried lactose free milk? I'm slightly lactose intolerant and I noticed using 2% lactose free milk is a lot easier on my stomach
@@TheHairiestPotter I've tried it a couple months ago, it actually went down surprisingly well. Definitely would consider it now as a buy-candidate.
How strong is the oat flavor in oat milk? I thought about buying it but I was never sure so I’ve just been sticking to almond or soy. I’m super lactose intolerant so I can’t even tolerate lactose free milk and most diary for that matter
@@prettygurlrockx I mean, oats don't have too much flavor to begin with (but it also might be my bad sense of taste). In the US, they sell it in almost every supermarket. If you have access to oats, you can make it yourself too (it's just strained oat+water, look online for tutorials).
My thought process is, if you really want to drink "milk" in any form, 5 mins/$5 is worth it just to try it out.
@@eskay_mochi I got into oat milk because almond milk was giving me stomach problems. Later on I found this organic almond milk with only almonds, water, and sea salt and haven’t had a stomach ache since. Carrageenan might be a problem…

@@dinonoobster4460 To make cow milk, you need land for both the cows and the crops, and those crops are not for human consumption. 50% of habitable land is used for agriculture, and of that 77% is for livestock and their feed. Only 23% of crop land is for human consumption. And you do not need pesticides to grow crops; ever heard of the term organic, no pesticides are allowed. Also you do not need excess land just for a plant product to have added nutrients, those are added in the process of making the product; also if you are eating a plant based diet then eating a variety of plants will be enough to get the nutrients you need.

It's called wokeness
@Madhav Ignihir it hurts reading your comments
You’re comparing protein content without considering the amino acid profile - real milk contains complete proteins
It might still be a net environmental benefit, but you can't simply base your model of a dairy free world off existing production.
