  • Kajari Melon, Banana & Root Pouch Container Garden - Urban Farm Update
    Hey folks. Have been very impressed with how our container gardens have been growing of late. Have found most plants do really well in them & think sitting them in a tray of water is a great way to keep the plants happy & productive. Have been very impressed with the Kajari melons & already have the next lot of plants underway.

    I would cut down the two large suckers/shoots and put your efforts into the two small shoots in the back. I have personally outgrown the stage where every plant deserved to live. I have now adopted the philosophy that I am the boss in the garden and you will do what I want or you are gone... still end up with surprises but a lot less chaos. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great videos.

      Hi Thomas. Both got the chop but am letting the larger one grow back to replace it's mother.
      That's a philosophy I'm finding myself follow now we've started to rearrange parts of the back yard ;)
      Cheers mate & have a top one.

    I really think you'll be okay. watched several clips on commercial banana farms and they were hitting those suckers off to replant to help the mother tree to continue. Love the clip.

    Hi Rob Commercial growers cut out all but the strongest sucker to replace the mother plant as it dies after fruiting. Thanks for your clips as they are helping heaps setting up my system in Toowoomba.

      Hi Brendon & thanks mate. I've seen some farms leave 1 & others 2 suckers & if I had the space I'd probably do the same. I let the whole clump go fairly wild with minimal maintenance out the front & it's done so so I think.
      In the pouches it gets a bit cramped so really should remove them all I think & left only the fruiting mother. That's what I'll be doing with the ducasse plant at least so this mess doesn't occur again.
      Cheers Brendon & hope all's going well up the hill.

    Hi Bob,
    I've been working with moringa for years, it's probably the easiest woody plant to propagate on earth. You can do cuttings from 5mm diameter up, all the way to the diameter of your thigh. Back in Senegal we used to chop entire trees down, harvest the leaves, and then plant every branch that was too thick for the goats to eat. I'm working my through the videos, am curious to see how your water rooting works!
    Love your channel, keep up the amazing work!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 років тому

      Hey Michael. Sorry I missed this post.
      I lost all of them due to rot & I'm fairly sure as just way to moist for them. The tree itself will be removed soon as builders will need better access to the back yard so will have loads of branches to play with.
      Cheers mate & have a top one.

    Been out of town so trying to catch up, as always great video! In the past I have cut back the bigger shoot and try to let the mother plant come back. Usually split out my shoots during the dormant season. Also I have noticed on some fruit trees when cutting the shoot back certain pests like to get to the fresh cut area, I usually cover with cloth for a few days.

    Hey Rob
    When I lived in the Atherton Tablelands (2000-2003) I worked at Lankesters Banana Plantation. What I learned there has provided my friends with several successful seasons of banana growth here in Gympie.
    My suggestion on the banana issue is to save the smaller pups - potting them elsewhere and remove to ground level ONLY ONE of the larger pups, preferably the larger one in this case. When the bananas finally do fill out and are ready for harvest leave the stump of the harvested banana as tall as possible, allowing it to die down naturally...This will act as a water storage and compost for the one remaining pup and reduce your costs while allowing another banana tree to grow up.
    Hope this helps...I hope to have banana plants to grow soon and have them in position about late August.

      Hi Frank & thanks mate. At this point I'll be removing the small ones & will try to kill off the smaller of the 2 large ones. Will cut the largest one back but let it re sprout, that way the mother might get the lions share of the nutrients I figure. Might be wrong but worth a crack I figure.
      Cheers mate.👍

    Even if you cut the suckers (pup's) Back Rob you probably won't kill them, and you will find they just grow back from the center rings..... if you time it right by the time you harvest and remove the mother plant the Pup's will be back up and ready to go .... looks like you are going to need to divide them into new pouches each once you harvest till you can get them in the ground ..

  • @wildchookMaryP
    @wildchookMaryP 7 років тому

    Rob, if you chop the suckers down, you can still plant them somewhere else later. All you need is the rhizome. You can even half them to have 2 plants. Think of an onion or hippeastrum/amaryllis, if you cut them into halves, quarter or 8 parts, they will all grow as long each has a base. If you sacrifice them suckers, know it you can still use it later. That if its not dead LOL

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому

      Hi Mary. 😊 Gave them the chop but the small ones will be saved to plant out elsewhere. 👍
      BTW, finally have 2 watermelons on the vine in the hoop house grown form the seed you sent me. Was in there hand pollinating the flowers & had no luck. Left them be & I think the ants in there have done the job for me. 😃 Will post a picture on them to Facebook soon.
      Hope all's well with you & yours.

    Beautiful kajari melon Rob ! These taste and smell wonderful too. Have you considered reducing your mornings tree height to a third? That way you will be able to harvest leaves easily. I have seen some folks keep the height really low , just keep pruning and letting it bush out low.

    • @RobsAquaponics

      Hi MBG 😊 I want to remove the whole bed & replace it with a tree in the ground soon. The cutting's I started off haven't done the best so I popped a few in the aquaponics to see if they would take. As soon as I'm sure we have a winner I'll remove the whole bed. Eventually I'd like to have a few growing so we can use them as a chop & drop mulch plant as well.
      Sorry for taking a while to get back to you & hope all's well with you & yours.

    Very nice root pouch garden, Rob! I am so short on space, so I grow a lot in root pouch also. I should do a video on it. Lots of great info. Thanks for sharing! I'm on Patreon, too. Went on just before Christmas, not the best time. :) Tell me about this kelp powder. I've had a hard time getting moringa going here. I guess it's just not sunny and hot enough. Wish I could get a big one like yours to block the view across the street! G'day!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому

      G'day Kay. :)
      The kelp powder is imported from Norway from memory so have started to buy in Bull kelp meal from Tasmania instead. I think there are a few different kelp fertilisers available in the states & think I recall John from growing your greens mention it in a few clips. Sea minerals is another product I'm thinking about trying as well as it may work better in the aquaponics.
      Hope patreon is working out for you. Am just heading off to set up for a live hangout with my 3rd tier patrons now.
      Cheers & all the best.

    Great update Rob! That melon was making my mouth water for homegrown melon, can't wait for the growing season to come! Baker Creek RULES!!! Is powdery mildew a big issue down there for you guys? It always get my melons (and all cuccurbits) but can usually still get a good harvest! Doesn't effect watermelon as much though. I would definitely chop at least one of the large suckers, I think if you remove them with the rhizome it will compromise the stability of the mother, so if you do you will probably have to support it (especially with the fruit weight). I am no expert, but they look more like water suckers, do you know? Willow is also used for a rooting solution since salicylic acid acts as a rooting hormone. Cheers!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому +1

      Hi mate. We normally get smashed with it through summer on all our cucurbits but not a single spot on this plant. That in itself is a HUGE bonus for re growing it.
      I think they are water suckers but are growing very well so think they will set fruit fairly quickly if let go.
      Looks like the moringa are doing really well with all the green sprouts standing up in today's 32°C heat. Am thinking I'll remove the rest of the tree very soon so I can start a tree in the ground under where that IBC bed is.
      Cheers & have a top one mate.

    sweet potatoes like neglect until they flower. I I'm in a low desert and plant them six inches, or a handbreadth apart in a 3 foot wide row. I put them in the sunniest and hottest part of yard. I plant them after tomatoes are in and harvest 7, 8, and 9 months later. I keep smaller pieces in ground and harvest them in later months.

      Hi Sarada. You can top water them as well. I just prefer to have them in the tray to help keep them hydrated.
      I've had a number of pouches in the yard for over 4 years now. The colours have faded a bit but that's about it. I have broken the handle of some of the larger 45gal/170L pouches but that was my fault for trying to drag them sideways with full grown banana trees in them. 🤔😂

    rob. I think iv seen every video you have ever put out. I feel safe in saying that you would be safe in taking out the two big blue bananas suckers, getting the bananas off your mother tree, composting the mother and being able two keep the two(?) little suckers going. also, I'm hoping I can get the name of aloe verity you have growing so well in your aquaponics bed. my one little plant is in dirt but seems to be extremely sensitive to over watering. thank you sir for the video.

  • @CharlesGinzel
    @CharlesGinzel 7 років тому

    i'm no expert Rob, still learning myself. but the management strategy for bananas which i've heard more than once is to keep grandfather, son and grandson and to remove all other suckers to replant. from what i've seen, suckers removed are usually 4 or less feet tall and can be removed with very few to no roots of their own. which translates into very little damage to the parent. the cuts on the pups are then left to cure before replanting to discourage rot. having said that, looks like your large pups are very mature now and so they may not take well to replanting? if you have a very sharp spade, it might be worth a try to skim the base very closely to the pup to extract the bottom "bulb" with almost no roots, then maybe cut the majority of the leaves off save for the very center and give a repotting a try at least. that way you may succeed in saving them without causing much of an impact to the fruiting father. myself, i would leave one of the two large pups and one of the small pups. idea being, you will have successive generations for fruiting in each of the following 2 years...

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому

      Hi Charles & thanks mate. 👍Will be taking out the 3 smaller ones & will try to kill off the smaller of the 2 large ones. The largest I'll cut back so hopefully the bulk of the energy will go into the mother plant & fruit but will let this one re grow to set fruit itself. From now on I'll be removing all suckers as they appear in the pouch plants I grow.
      Cheers mate & hope all's well with you.

      Hi Zenith Star & sorry it took a while to get back to you. . Some fabric post like the Root Pouches will allow the roots to be air pruned which stop[s the plant from becoming root bound as you find in plastic pots.

    transplant them, and feed the mother, trust me I've done it. also shred/slice up two large aloe vera leaves put them in your compost tea 12hrs prior to doing the transplant and feed both the mother and the pups. I've had less to no transplant shock with this than before.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому

      Hi Mohd & thanks mate 👍
      I think I'll cut the larger sucker back so it can re grow in the pouch but remove the smaller ones from the pouch.
      I don't think I can remove the smaller of the 2 large ones without damaging the roots of the mother too much so will cut it back as close to the rhizome as I can to see if I can kill it.
      I've seen aloe used a bit in teas & also as a foliage spray to help activate the defence mechanisms of plants due to the salicylic acid it contains.
      BTW, haven't been on Instagram much, was all getting a bit much trying to keep up with it all ;)

    I think cutting the banana suckers down would not stop them from growing.
    Better carefully cut them, off and maybe disinfect the cut with some charcoal powder.
    We have bananas in the garden and i just cut the suckers off with a dirty spade.
    This has never hurt one of the mother plants even when i had to cut nearly all the way around.
    Though ours never fruited (growing season is to short).

      Hi Dave & thanks mate. Will be trying to kill off the smaller of the 2 large ones but will only cut the largest one back once so it can replace the mother ponce she's fruited. The 3 small ones will be potted out at this point. Not sure where they're going as I haven't got a spot set up yet :/
      Cheers mate & all the best.

    Would like to know how you source your Banana plants. I wanted to cultivate a Lady Finger variety a number of years ago and after a trail of research and phone calls I arrived at the DPI, but, it seemed so convoluted a task I decided against it. It is all to do with the constant threat of bunchy top disease but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I leave in North Brisbane and wondering how much success or otherwise you are having with your Asparagus runners. I have heard that runners do take several years before they push up quality spears. Are the results worth the effort? Thanks, in advance :)

      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому +1

      Hi John. We bought out plants from these folks backyardbananas.com.au/faqs/
      They removed restrictions for us SE QLD folks mid last year & can grow almost all varieties here now. 👍 You do need to by from a registered grower though or you could land in hot water if the DPI find out.
      Normally it takes about 2 growing seasons before the asparagus crowns are established enough to provide you with a decent harvest. We had great results from our asparagus for the first 3 or so seasons then grubs got into the beds & have damaged the crowns of the plants.
      They're one perennial I think would recommend for a spot in the yard you don't use much & gets a decent amount of sun as they're very low maintenance. Not a plant I'd pop in if you're looking for a constant yield year round.
      Hope that helps a bit mate.
      Cheers.

      Hi Arun. Will be removing the small ones to new pouches & cutting the 2 large ones back I think. That way they will take a while to re shoot & the mother will get the bulk of the nutrients.

    I say sacrifice those big suckers Rob. I don't think the risk of trying to save them is worth it. The small ones save for sure, also do you ever have any pH issues with your soil? Cheers. (:

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому +1

      They got the chop J Bot 👍
      Soil pH sits between 6.8 & about 8 around the patch here. All the beds have had different amendments added to them over the years so there is a bit of variance between them all.
      Cheers mate.

    You arent meant to actually cut the suckers off. They replace the mother plant after it dies off. Feeding it more heavily would help.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 років тому +1

      Hey Tiggypeth. I ended up with 8 or 9 suckers in that blue Java pouch so it would of been way over crowded & would of split open if they were left in there.
      Even in the ground it does help to remove some suckers & only leave a select few to replace the mother as they do in the commercial banana plantations. You don't have to but it does help with production.
      All is not lost though as it just means you have a new plant to start off another clump with. 🙂👍
      Or plants out the front have been left to fend for themselves & we are getting almost 10 bunches a year from them.
      Cheers & have a top one.
      Rob

    Banana: If you don't really need the big suckers to grow, just turn it into compost, but if you do, you can transplant it. You don't have to get the whole root ball, just as long as the corm (base of the truck) is intact it's viable for replanting. (This video shows the part I meant, although in this example the roots were removed to prevent disease from spreading to another field - ua-cam.com/video/cigy-hOgp2o/v-deo.htmlm32s )
    Amaranth: Serving suggestion - deep fry the larger leaves in batter (tempura-style).

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому +1

      Hi Munirah & thanks for the link to the clip. It showed me a few things I hadn't seen elsewhere. Will be cutting one back & will leave it to re grow but will try to kill the smaller of the 2. The smaller ones will be removed be planted out elsewhere in the patch I think.
      I'll remember to add some amaranth into the next batch of tempura we make up. We don't make it often but do enjoy it.
      Thanks again & have a great one.

    leave the 2 suckers and cut down the main once the bunch of bananas is ready to come off. doesn't the main die off once the bananas have finished anyway as far as I have been told. I don't know much about bananas, but I do know that the best banana tree is called the gross Michelle. they are extremely rare, and taste like artificial banana. I read somewhere that some trees where bought to Australia in the 50's to try and save the species after all the commercial farms where destroyed by Panama disease in other parts of the world. If anyone knows of the Gross Michelle banana, and possibly where to get one please let me know. Any information about this would be awesome

      Hey mate. I had a look around & couldn't find any for sale publicly here in OZ. Does look like some farmers are still doing trials with them though.
      I think the suckers are taking too many nutrients from the mother in the pouch so will be giving them both the chop. Will leave a few feet of stem on the largest sucker so it can take the place of the mother. The small ones will come out & go into pots or pouches I think.
      Cheers Ram & let me know if you come across any one selling the Gros Michel.

    Don't know if you have already decided or not, but seems like the status quo is you aren't getting anything decent from the original plant and those suckers look pretty amazing, so if you planted them both and sacrificed the mum, you'd have a bit more of a wait, but the opportunity to have twice as many healthy nannies as you would if you toasted them in favor of mum. And wouldn't you rather have real fully grown fruit for your first taste experience with this variety??? Sure do wish there was something that we could get away with here in Texas, mid zone 8.....

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 років тому

      Hi Dellasmom. I ended up chopping the large suckers as there just isn't enough room for that many plants in a pouch that size. The fruit is growing nicely as it is but if that plant had to compete for nutrients from it's offspring I think they would come out a bit puney. One pup is already growing back & will replace it's mom but am trying to kill the other so there will be less competition for nutrients as it matures.
      Have seen a few folks up north ion the USA growing dwarf varieties in greenhouses. Would take a lot to heat them through winter though I think.
      Cheers & have a great one.
      Rob.

      Am not sure how you came to that conclusion. I do get advice from many folks that watch the clips & follow a lot of it. In this case I didn't think anyone could come up with an alternative as I had been asking folks that have many years experience growing bananas & they could only see the one option.
